Black cow is hands down my favorite local ice cream shop. All the ice cream is made on the premises. We have had black raspberry chip, Oreo, coffee Oreo (may have even been mocha), vanilla, licorice, maple walnut... and they have all been excellent. I enjoyed the licorice so much that I cannot wait for them to make it again this year. Our dog tried the doggy ice cream (banana slice peanut butter) and didn't like it... he how we loves the vanilla so we now get him a kiddie size when we got and he has several licks and we can save it in our freezer for the next time he wants some. He isn't spoiled too much, right?? Service is always pretty good but you do have some people who will give you more ice cream than others even though every time we have ordered the same sizes. It is cute inside - they have fudge and ice cream cakes available as well. Primarily I am ordering at the outside window though! Ample parking outside and never an issue getting a spot. read more

A true millis staple! The Ice cream is homemade, fun flavors all summer, and there really is something for everyone (pup included!) I love their special flavors - I think they had a lemon cookie one earlier? And the 50% baked? But you can't go wrong with their transitional choco chip cookie dough. Solid two stars. Ordered a regular with two scoops thinking it would have portions like most over the top type ice cream creameries. Instead got two tiny scoops drowned out by the regular sized cup. Think smaller than kiddie sized scoops. Lemon cookie tasted more like banana. The Kahlua chip didn't taste like Kahlua or chip. Might be homemade but they must use a premade base as it just wasn't very creamy. Would definitely not go back, way better alternatives in surrounding towns. I took a ride to Black Cow in Millis the other day only to discover they aren't open for the season yet. I go there once a week for my Chocolate Frappe (I do consider myself an expert) so I can't wait. I have had Frappes from many other establishments and they don't compare either in quality of ice cream or price or service. Also, you can sit outside at picnic tables and bring your pets or sit inside in the air conditioning when it's really hot out if you don't want to sit inside your car. Charlotte, the owner and her family and newlywed husband, do an excellent job of rotating the homemade flavors! It truly is a local, traditional drive up ice cream shop. I got a chocolate walnut frappe, still sipping on it right now and it is HEAVENLY! My mom got a black raspberry cone, and my two kids got coffee ice cream on a sugar cone. We were visiting / babysitting our 20 month grandson in a nearby town and drove to Black Cow based on the great reviews. While our ice cream was enjoyed ( in particular my husband who thought the orange pineapple was the best he'd ever had), I was shocked they had no high chairs. It's not easy having a 20 month old enjoy his ice cream cone in an adult sized chair unable to reach the table ... though he did a pretty stellar job. There was plenty of indoor seating ... For a town in the middle of nowhere, there are surprisingly a good amount of ice cream options. Maybe they knew this is the only way to keep people (aka me) sane. Out of all the Ice Cream options in a 10 mile radius, Black Cow is my favorite. And that's not just because it's a key part of Meehan trivia. The ice cream is homemade. There is rarely any line. They have ample space indoor and outdoor, and ample parking. The flavors are delicious and each one better than the next. They have the good sprinkles. Nothing special about this place and it has tasteless ice cream and boring flavors. I was told by people that swear by this place that it is the best around. Too bad they mean it is the best in Medway because there is not other competition. They have maybe 10 flavors and the sizes are decent but the ice cream tastes average and is just downright boring and not creamy. There are plenty of other places that I know of that are way better and offer more in a serving. If your nearby and don't feel like driving then fine. So many people have told me about Black Cow, I was expecting it to be GREAT. To be honest, some things were great and others were disappointing about this seasonal ice cream parlor along 109 in Millis. First, before I even start the rundown of this place, don't expect the restaurant attached in the interior of this place to be open. For at least a few years now, it's been closed and just vacant, yet still having a sing up from Route 109 and advertising on the building. Anyway here is the rundown on this place: PROS: -- Convenient Location: This really doesn't need to be explained. If you live in Millis, Medway, Medfield or the surrounding area, it's a convenient and close place to get ice cream, and one of the only options. -- Hours of Operation : Open 3pm-9pm Monday-Friday, and Noon-9pm Sat & Sun. Good hours for a local shop. -- Employees: Always friendly, attentive, and make everything correctly for any and all customers at the window I have seen. They are smiling and -- Ice Cream: Delicious. Flavorful, tasty and delectable. Plus, so many flavors available. Enough said? -- Outdoor Seating: Yes, there are tables around the side of the building, if that's something you are looking for. -- Variety: Ice cream selection is superior. Lots of flavors, lots of yogurt, and even sherbet. They also have smoothies, raspberry lime rickey's, ice cream soda, and lots of sundaes. Large variety for such a small spot. -- Jobs : Multiple people I know have said they hire at 15. If you have a son / daughter looking for a job, this might be the only place in Millis (and the surrounding area) to get a 15-year old a job. CONS: -- Expense & Value: Prices are pretty high and value is subpar. You could get a lot more, for a better price at TC Scoops down the road, or at most other ice cream shops. -- Business: Ok, it's not nearly as busy as Bubbling Brook or Crescent Ridge (the two MAJOR ice cream places in the area), but it gets busy on weekends, so be prepared to have a wait at some points in time. Overall, it's a GOOD place in the area, and I will come back, but I prefer TC Scoops in the Medway Shopping Plaza for the pure purpose of never being too busy and always getting more. Check it out sometime you're driving along Route 109. 3 stars for Black Cow. read more

Phantom Gourmet praises this place for a reason! Even though it is located in the small town of Millis in-between a bunch of industrial companies it is a shining star!! Where else can you get homemade ice cream where they use a whole SLEEVE of oreos?! Or supremely generous portions for that matter. From Phantom's Review: "Ice cream lovers stay till the cows come home for flavors like Red Raspberry Truffle, Orange Chip, and Crème Brulee. The Smore ice cream tastes just like that campfire classic, with mini marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate chips mixed into chocolate ice cream." This place will make you think you've died and gone to ice cream heaven!! Will have to wait until April to enjoy the savory tastes of Black Cow though.... since they have closed for the season *tear* You can bet I will be there in April for the return! Moved to the area almost two years ago, and found this gem shortly thereafter. WOW! If you like homemade ice cream, you'll love the Black Cow. Decorated like an old-school sodapop, with a friendly staff, The Black Cow is definitely worth a visit. Three dozen or so flavors, each as creamy and delicious as your favorites from chains like Coldstone or Friendly's. And, it's a Phantom Gourmet Hidden Jewel, which doesn't hurt. Quite simply, the best hand made, small batch, ice cream in Massachusetts. Period. Using only high butter fat cream and incorporating very little air this is the definition of hand made, small batch ice cream. While all of the usual flavor are available, take a chance and try one of the weekly "special" flavors. Among those, the "sweet cream with cranberries" is a classic combination that harks back to the hand churned ice cream we used to make on those hot summers evenings using fresh cream from the local dairy. Really great little ice cream place that I got to try when visiting friends in Holliston. From the outside, it's rather unassuming, but the inside space is super cute. The ice cream was delicious! I had banana oreo and gingersnap, and both of them were delectable, down to the last drop. Black Cow has a lot of unique flavors, as well as the standards. My boyfriend is a huge homemade ice cream fan, and he raved about his as well (Kahlua chip and something to do with mud...mud pie, maybe?). The fudge, displayed on a counter inside, also looked amazing, but I was able to resist, since I had completely filled myself up with ice cream. Definitely on my list to try for next time! read more

Sorry but no. My ice cream was chocolate not vanilla. I have not had a bad ice cream experience in a long time not counting trash soft serve places. It seemed nice. The girls that work there are nice and friendly but ice cream was awful. The only ice cream I eat is either vanilla or cookies n cream (oreo). So it's crazy that my oreo would be nasty chocolate ice cream base. I'll only go to Kravings. My other ice cream in a cup had such a small portion I would have called it baby sized. I think I've tried most of the coffee heath frozen yogurts in Eastern MA, and the Black Cow has the best, hands down. I love that their yogurt tastes like premium ice cream, and the huge toffee pieces are a great addition to the smooth coffee frozen yogurt. read more
