Hidden Gem Alert | Taos, New Mexico…read more Some coffee shops announce themselves. Others let the coffee do the talking. Tucked away in Taos is one of the most unassuming coffee shops you'll ever find. From the outside, you might drive right past it. Step inside, though, and you'll immediately understand why there's always a line out the door. My daughter and I each ordered iced lattes. She went with vanilla and oat milk, while I stuck with my go-to combination of oat milk and honey. Both drinks were outstanding. Smooth, balanced, and packed with flavor without being overly sweet. I've had coffee all over the United States and in several countries around the world, and these lattes easily rank among my favorites. The coffee impressed us so much that we couldn't leave without grabbing a bag of their light roast to take home. What stood out just as much as the coffee was the atmosphere. The staff was incredibly welcoming, the service was excellent, and despite the constant flow of customers, everyone was smiling. Yes, you'll probably wait in line--but trust me, it's worth every minute. One funny moment from our visit: I had just found an open table when a gentleman told me, "I was saving that one." I laughed, told him to go right ahead...and then watched him walk over and sit at a completely different table. It gave my daughter and me a good laugh and made for one of those random travel memories you don't forget. Final Verdict: If you're visiting Taos and consider yourself a coffee lover, this place belongs at the very top of your list. Fantastic coffee. Friendly people. A welcoming atmosphere. And a line that tells you everything you need to know before you even take your first sip. Sometimes the best coffee shops aren't the flashy ones--they're the ones that quietly become unforgettable. That was my first venture with Taos Mountain, I wasn't hiking or doing anything remotely active, I was driving highway 550 just outside of Bernalillo, and I was rather hangry. We were headed to Pagosa Springs and I needed sustenance. I understand that, for many of us, energy bars are convenient nibs of much-needed nutrients for our outdoor adventures but they also come through in a pinch for a substitute meal, and yeah, they never do, right? Wrong. Taos Mountain crafts the only legit meal-in-a-wrapper I know of. Loaded with nuts and nutrients, this company honestly satiates. Faves: the piñon coffee varietal wins, hands-down, caramel pecan comes in second, almond agave third, and last on my list is the coconut bar, which probably has more to do with a coconut issue I've experienced my entire life. Not thrilled with the texture of coconut shavings. Hey, that's my deal, and yet I've devoured the bar. Get one of these bad boys, they're in the $3-$4 range. Not bad for a meal that won't leave you hangry.

It was about a 15 minute wait to get a table on a very busy Saturday afternoon. I am bumping up my review since it was a dog-friendly restaurant. Our server, Arthur, graciously brought me more water for my dog and offered me a bowl even though I already had both. For starters I had a Whiskey Smash ($14.75). I enjoyed it. I sampled a taste from my brother's beer flight ($18). My mom's Desperado Mexi Lager also. They were mostly enjoyable. Red apple cider was probably something I would have on the front porch. For lunch I had the BBQ brisket sandwich ($12.50) with fries, pickles, and onions. They did not skimp on the meat. There was BBQ at the table which I added because the brisket was a bit flavorless. I chuckled when our server brought the mac and cheese out to my ultra picky nieces. He stated to my sister-in-law that it was in fact the Kraft-style mac, but it wasn't. I mean maybe he should learn what that means first of all. But second... Can you believe those kids are so picky that they didn't eat a single bite? Eight dollars per bowl with a side. Wow. My kids would starve the rest of the afternoon if their food smelled and tasted half way decent. Lol. I can almost hear the mutterings at my parenting style. Hey at least I drank my overpriced whiskey cocktail. Because our party was so large, automatic gratuity of 18% was added to our ticket. The women's restroom was small and mostly clean, but awkward entering and exiting with other women and girls crammed inside. I did not like how tables in our area were left untouched long after other patrons left. If I had my choice, I would probably opt for an alternative place next time. I was not that impressed by the staff's overall indifference to all the patrons. RATING BREAKDOWN (3 stars overall, bumped up because they were dog-friendly!) The fries were crispy and I really liked the "spicy" barbecue sauce. The service left a lot to be desired. When our food came out, something was missing from every plate. The runner seemed confused and lost when we asked about our remaining sides. The waiter had to ask someone if they had to-go cups for my 8 year old and the runners had to ask about barbecue sauce for our brisket . I really wanted to like this place, my husband and I have enjoyed their spirits at various restaurants in Taos, but we were very underwhelmed and felt it was very overpriced especially for lacking service.

I'm so glad we did! What we loved: * Friendly, welcoming owner and staff. * Excellent coffee. * Freshly made panini sandwiches. * Homemade pastries. * Clean restroom. * Fun local folk art throughout the café that gives the place such a great community vibe. What we ordered: * #1 Turkey Pesto Panini: Absolutely delicious. Fresh, flavorful, and made to order. It also came with a bag of chips and a large pickle, which was such a nice surprise. * Cherry turnover: Flaky, buttery, and filled with plenty of cherry filling. * Strawberry rhubarb pastry: Just as delicious. The perfect sweet treat with our coffee. I also wanted to mention that I respectfully disagree with the review that called this place "just okay." I've eaten at cafés all over the world, and this didn't feel or taste average to me at all. Everything tasted fresh, homemade, and thoughtfully prepared. You can feel the love that goes into running this place. Whether you're a local or just passing through San Luis Obispo, I would absolutely recommend stopping here. We will definitely be back the next time we're in town!
