What a great new addition to the restaurant scene in Columbia. This new restaurant utilizes an existing building with charm and character. It has an open concept where you can see the pizzas going into the oven. Food - excellent overall. The menu is not huge and they focus on select items that fit very well together. Salad was delicious and requested dressing on side came as requested. Huge plus as far too many drown the salad. This allows you to add as much or little dressing as you wish. The salad was a good size and can be shared. Meatball appetizer was tasty with just a hint of spice which enhanced the flavor. Three meatballs all of good size with lots of sauce and cheese. This is our perfect size in apps so we can share and try more with out impeding main course. Pizza can be ordered by the slice or the pie. You can choose from various types of pizza or create your own. The slices are not thick but a thin traditional style slice and there is the right amount of cheese and sauce. Chicken parm sandwich comes on a thick bread but not too thick that it over powers the taste of the checked with sauce and cheese. Dessert - Tiramisu was DELICIOUS. one of the best ever tasted and by far the best ever in South Carolina. Service was good even with a new server. When asked how something was prepared her statement was I am not sure let me check. She returned quickly with an adequate explanation that matched the food when it arrived Overall pricing is good and nothing was really overpriced Definitely a welcome change in Columbia as far too many places that are mediocre overcharge but not here. Dined in at Black Dog. Seated in an ample booth after a 10 minute wait. (Could have sat at "pizza bar" right away) on a Thursday night. What I loved: * appetizer (whipped ricotta) came quickly. Tasty with high quality bread - a perfect way to pass time. * blanc Negroni was really unique - a touch bitter, but very much to my tastes. * bnb Negroni tasty too - a little seeeter. * the crust - amazing! Crisp Neapolitan style, thin and crackling! * the lamb pizza - so unique and tasty! * can order pizza by the slice. Got dear daughter three pepperoni slices, which is half a pie. I don't plan on coming back to this place. The pizza was dry, and there was very little sauce, which also had no real flavor. The crust was hard, and overall it just didn't live up to the ambience or the location of the restaurant. When I arrived, the two young ladies at the front were friendly and sweet, but they didn't seem attentive or fully aware of the flow of service. I wasn't greeted at the door, so I wasn't sure what I needed to do to order a slice to go. I ended up going to the bar for guidance, only to be directed (rudely) back to the front counter to place my order with them. That back-and-forth created a bit of confusion and made the experience feel unorganized. We ordered a couple of different pies to share, and the toppings were generous without making the slices overly heavy. The pepperoni had nicely crisped edges, which added a great little crunch. Friday nights in don't mean you can't still support a local gem. I've been wanting to try Black Dog Pizza on Main Street, and a rainy night felt like the perfect excuse. We kept it classic with a traditional cheese and a pepperoni... but the fried pickle pizza was just too interesting not to order. The pepperoni was right up my alley -- those crispy cup pepperonis with a drizzle of hot honey? Absolute perfection. The fried pickle was good and definitely fun to try, though I wish it packed a little more dill and ranch flavor. We'll definitely be back to work our way through more of the menu (and I can already see another pepperoni in my future). This was such a wonderful experience. I met up with my friend here for a nice dinner and I was glad that this was our place of choice. The food had an interesting flavor profile (especially the lamb pizza) and tasted great. Our waitress was consistent with her checkups and was very pleasant. The interior was cozy to say the least. First, we got there at 6:30 and they said it would be a 45 minute wait. So no worries we went upstairs and had a drink to wait. We kept checking but they kept extending the wait time so we were not seated until 8 pm. We assumed this meant the food would be great. So one of my friends ordered his pizza while we were walking to the table. We all sat down and ordered our appetizers and food and then we waited. The appetizers came and they were underwhelming. Now I will say the calamari was great! But, that is where things went downhill. The pizza didn't start to arrive until 9:30 pm. The first pizza came and it was very dry and appeared to have been ready since 8 pm. We tried to eat it but it tasted dry and hard. So we thought the next pizza would be better since it was a supreme. Initially we thought everything would be fine but then when we cut into the pizza we found that the bottom was totally burned and black. This turned out to be the problem with the lamb pizza as well. I only like pepperoni pizza so I simply ordered a slice. My one slice of pizza was the last item to arrive at 9:45 pm! When my slice arrived not only was it visibly extremely black and burnt, it was smaller than my hand! I refused to accept the slice so I decided to sample the pizzas my friends had ordered. The supreme was burned beyond repair and all I could do was attempt to scrape the toppings off! This all wasn't the worst part of this Black Dog fiasco. The worst part was that the server and the management acted like this was all normal and acceptable! No apologies no explanations, no contact from anyone in management. First time trying this place, I love Pizza so I was very excited. The staff the hostess and the chef were all phenomenal! I ordered the calamari which was exceptional and well seasoned and fried to perfection. The marinara sauce was really good as well. I also ordered the compote cocktail, which was OK, but it was a bit more on the bitter side for my taste, but that can easily be fixed with a little extra blood orange juice. I did a somewhat customized pizza and it's turned out to be so good. I ordered the veggie pizza and added pepperoni and mushrooms and I did the garlic cream sauce instead of the marinara sauce and it was phenomenal. It was cooked. Perfectly crust was nice and crisp. How I like it. The flavors were exceptional. Definitely will be going back here again to try some other pies and menu items. My Sarah Morgan was so sweet and attentive. Got seated at the bar with my cuzzo at Black Dog Pizza on a busy Friday evening. It took a little while to place our order and get our food. I ordered the Margherita pizza--thin, crispy, and really solid overall. The mozzarella and sauce were on point, and the basil took it up a notch. If anything, it could've used a bit more EVOO. We also tried the Italian sandwich. The arugula and heirloom tomatoes were the highlight, but the rest of the ingredients were just okay. The server did get us coffee along with our drinks, which was appreciated. That said, the service could've been better--I don't think customers should have to help by grabbing drinks from the server, and there was a bit of inconsistency when it came to handling leftovers (e.g., when we asked for a box for the sandwich, only the pizza got boxed, so had to ask again). read more

The fabulous servers and front hostess got me in PRONTO (even though I showed up right before the afternoon break between service). I immediately knew I wanted the pepperoni slices because they were sitting in front of me (I sat at the bar area). I got an espresso martini to SLAM (girl, she's a millennial what did you expect?), got my slices super quick while having a good convo with one of the guys working pizza station (also loved your tats, yall fr have some tens working at this location) and decided I'd try the Hugo too. My drop dead baddie of a server told me some other suggestions in the area (I've never been in Columbia before) for drinks and food and the Hugo was delish as well. WILL be back. Let's clear the air: Aside from il Focolare, I've always been a straight up hater when it comes to pizza in Columbia. You go to Charleston, Greenville, Charlotte and they all have excellent old school/new school/slice pizza places. Columbia? Not so much...until now. This is the first pizza place in a long time that doesn't feel catered to college kids. Columbia has that problem sometimes. I got the pepperoni pizza, whipped ricotta, and a glass of house wine ($7). I thought it was really cool you can get slices here and that they have chicken parm/chicken cutlet sandwiches. Everything was absolutely delicious. The whipped ricotta was very light in a great way. The pizza had an excellent char and chew. It's honestly as close to a perfect pizza you can get: A little char, crispy - yet chewy. Cupped pepperonis too? This is a winner. An appetizer, whole pizza, and four glasses of red wine was $68. That's a heck of a cheap date night to me for any sit down restaurant. Local tip! I wasn't sure what to expect coming here. I tried the whipped ricotta and it was just odd to me. I never jumped on the whipped ricotta bandwagon a few years back so I don't get the fascination with it. It's literally whipped cheese with lemon juice, brown sugar and toasted nuts. If ur looking for a late night slice...this is it. Columbia has been upping its pizza game over the last year and the recent opening of Black Dog Pizza is a key player. Located in the old Woody's and sharing space in the same building as Hendrix, this spot is a keeper. Slices are available in cheese or pepperoni. Both are pretty good. Crust was well baked and chewy rather than crispy. The cup & char pepperoni was really savory. Service was excellent and the bar area is a really great place to hang out for a drink and a slice. Plenty of booth seating to give it that pizza parlor feel. This is a nice informal cozy date spot that won't break the bank. The only drawback is that the over emits alot of smoke so it sometime seems hazy in the dining area. I didn't.mind it while there but the smell kind of stuck to my clothes and thay was not so nice.
