Went to the marina to see a friend, parked right in front of black duck cafe, was feeling hungry and the manager was just opening the doors. We went in and ordered a Brie and Blue Cheese stuffed 1/2 pounder burger with fries and a bowl of clam chowder. Delish! Everything was good including the pickle. I was so full I couldn't move. All I wanted was to lay down and take a nap! Fast service friendly staff! Total was $60 for two orders including tip. More than happy! read more

I recently attended a party here. First impression was "wow this is a dive bar." And you know what? It is. Not a bad thing, though. This bar/restaurant appeared on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and I definitely know why - the food is amazing. REALLY good. I tried a few different things and was impressed. For me, their popcorn shrimp really stood out. It was crunchy & the shrimp was cooked perfectly. Their calamari was decent. We also had a veggie platter, which was very fresh. Lastly, this place is known for their burgers and their burgers are great. I had one of their sliders and it was impressive. Especially for someone who is not the biggest fan of burgers - me. On a Triple D kick so took the wife and kids there. 101 bucks for 4 peeps. We went at 230 and was very busy Clams basket and steamers were good. If you get the steamers you don't need to order a main course. Both burgers were under cooked and fries and onion rings were cold and not crispy.... just really greasy. Lobster roll was fishy ( biggest disappointment) Staff was nice but food was underwhelming and not hot when it got to our table. Three in a row of the Black Duck having great atmosphere, friendly crowd, and good eats. Sunday on Father's Day may night be good for the wait staff, as they seem to not be up for the job. In most places this would spell $$$ for the servers, but for this crew it spelled too much work. Everything was slow- seating, taking orders, no reorders on drinks, and getting the check took forever. To quote the table next to us at 3pm to the waitress "could we settle the check before the sun goes down". The greatest part was the food and atmosphere. Kudos to the chief and the kitchen staff. Steamers and stuffed burgers were on point. That was the happy happy part of our experience. I'll be back to see if service improves on a not so Holiday Sunday. read more

As I sat down at the bar (place was packed, no other seating available, which is a good sign!) the couple next to me is complaining to the bartender about how packed the place is ever since it was featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Oops! Thats exactly what brought me here. The bartender was rude and abrasive but in a playful manner, kind of like what you would get at a Ed Debevic's or Dick's Last Resort. He wasn't too excited about my Texas ID when I ordered a beer, and really not impressed when my back up ID was from Illinois, LOL. The beer wasn't necessary I really came for the Clams Casino. Fun experience as I learned the Clams Casino is a popular clam dish, I walked in thinking this was just a Black Duck thing. Thank you to everyone at the bar for sharing your seafood expertise w/ me!! :) First time ordering Clams, so I felt like I didn't know what I was doing but once I got them, so yummy! I had to get over the chewy texture at first. Thankfully the clams were covered in Bacon and Parm Cheese! I loved that this place was on the water and located underneath a viaduct. Was at the there Monday I am glad the duck is still open, but not sure why it is. The food is tired and not interesting and the staff look exhausted and not that engaged at all. This was my second time and my husbands first at the Black Duck. There clams casinos are the best. The service was ok being that it was lunch time and only 1 person waiting in the tables, but she did a great job! I tried escargot for the first time ever. The sweet potato fries are to die for. I used to eat here all the time and the food was great. I moved out of state for a few years and recently moved back. About a week ago, I decided to stop in with a friend and get some dinner. The service was horrible. It was so understaffed people were leaving... no one had water and some tables weren't even set. Our food took forever to order and was a "C" at best! Ok, I hate to do this....but after my visit last night I am writing the Duck off. Here is why: $70 for 6 beers and 3 burgers and not even a 5 star burger joint! (ouch! 3 strikes right there!) When I asked for the famous Brie burger as seen on TV the bartender said it wasn't the same. I looked at him curiously and he said that they aren't stuffed as much. Strike 1. The burgers came, my buddy ordered well done, it was rare in the middle. The bartender said that was because of the cheese....come on, we are not idiots....burn the damn thing! Mine was greasy and hardly filled with cheese! I want the burger that Guy Fieri got! Strike 2. We each received around 6 onion rings and they were cold and soggy with oil. Strike 3. The coleslaw came in a little paper cup that is usually reserved for cocktail sauce or tartar sauce. The slaw must have been sitting in it for sometime as the paper was wet and soggy and virtually fell apart when I touched it. Strike 4? So, OUCH Black Duck, OUCH! You get on TV and things seem to go downhill like the slope of your floor! While it may be packed now, I wonder when people will get the hint.....then again this is the richest part of CT and maybe prices don't matter as much as they do to me. read more

They have a real problem with some of the bartenders, and with at least one of the managers. VERY NASTY, when asked to remove a false charge they "added on" to our check. They told us we "are a disgrace to their company", for asking that the false charge be removed, and threatened to call the police. I have been going there for around 12 years now, and have never had such a nasty, mean, dishonest experience there. They have a nasty, hothead bartender with some kind of chip on his shoulder - who is creative at the cash register, and has a serious hostility problem, and the manager backs him up. The Duck is a landmark for sure, I count it as a great place to grab a burger and a beer.. The food is really good for bar food, the view at the bar is excellent, the seats on the side for dining are nothing fancy, but good if you want to talk to your companions and focus on your food. Situated on a floating barge (yes, this bar is floating on the Saugatuk river) this place is the best kept secret of Westport. Booze, music, food, weird people... Can't go wrong. The food is pretty solid, though it will take a minute to get your burger and fries. The bartenders have been working here since before time and it shows, but they will make you your Long Island, so relax. If there was any proof that there is still a blue-collar class in Westport, the Black Duck is it. Place is greasy like their delicious food. Had the bacon cheese burger and chili cheese fries. Portions so absurdly large my French compatriot said "the f&ck is wrong with America". I was proud. This dive was recommended by Guy Fieri of Food Network's "Diner's Dive-ins and Dives." Usually, the dives on his show are gastro inventive little out-of-the-way holes-in-the-wall. Well, they got the hole-in-the wall part right! Sorry to say, the food wasn't particularly inventive or good. We started by forgoing the menu items they featured on the TV program and dove into some chips and salsa. The salsa was OK (medium to hot), but had the consistency of tomato paste. I wasn't sure if there was anything fresh in it. Since it was Good Friday, I tried the New England Clam Chowder. It was average at best. For dinner, I ordered the Clam (with bellies) Basket and my loved one ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich. His sandwich was good, but it won't rival Daisy Mae's. My clam's tasted like they had been dredged in cinnamon. There was a sort of sweet taste to them which was off-putting. They weren't crisp either. The clams were poured over the fries, so you had to look under them to get the fries out. Not that I would expect plating skills at a place like this, but it sure wasn't appetizing. The place would have been easy to find if Google Maps said to go straight at the exit off of I95, but they say to bear left and take a right. This place is clearly a locals only type of establishment. When I saw it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives I was excited that there was something featured so close by. So I bugged my boyfriend for months to take me, but now I regret doing so. Pretty good. I started this juice fast (brilliant!) in the midst of moving to a new place. Was driving down I-95 with pops, headed to my new digs in Ridgewood and it was a rainy ass night. I was clenching my teeth from hunger trying to remember what all those wacko health gurus on YouTube were saying about 'detoxification symptoms' or...whatever.... Fruitarians! Wtf? Yeah so. Dad was like, "I wanna try this place called the Black Duck." It sounded so delicious. Right there. We way too classy for Mc'Ds. Except to pee. I started to read the Yelp reviews to tease my palette anymore. I signed up for a month long "Banana Girl Diet Challenge" and was on day 2 of my preliminary juice fasting. I figured I'd cheat straightaway with a beer... Then started reading the reviews of Clams Casino!!! Wow!!!! "I saw it on that show 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives'" - K, cool. Google maps definitely told us to go in the opposite direction. It's tucked under the bridge, and behind other buildings with a parking lot behind a row of these other establishments so already it seems more delicious than somewhere easy to find. Atmosphere is straight cozy. Crooked floors, blue rug, nautical vibe and flat screen TVs for your sport watching needs. The music was some shitty radio playing dance type stuff, I dunno, it threw me off. I got a Blue Moon on tap and it was the best Blue Moon I have ever had... Something about it. Made me realize all those other Blue Moon's I've had were not good, not compared to this. Got the clams casino and they were delightful. The crunchy house salad was a disappointing mound of iceberg lettuce - which is entirely my fault, not theirs. They made it look pretty the way the onions, cherry tomatoes and sliced black olives were strewn about artfully. I could tell that there was love there... Oh, and, I also ordered it sans dressing - like a total freakshow idiot - with "lemon wedges please." Hate myself. The lemon wedges were aplenty and also evenly space around the salad, making the presentation super thoughtful. Obviously it wasn't delicious but again - my fault entirely. It was good enough. But the clams casino... With nice little bacon slices on top... Breadcrumbs and steamed in lemon juice. Delightful. Dad's steak was pretty rare. I know he prefers it like that. Last night my family and I went for some dinner and karaoke. The food was pretty good, and the karaoke is always great with Leigh Henry. But this review will focus on the downright mean waitress who made us feel like she would happily spit in our food. I believe her name was Tracy. We got there and she started taking drink orders. One of us asked her if she had any recommendations. She said "Ya know what, if you can't decide what to drink, you shouldn't be in a bar." What kind of response is that to a paying customer? It gets worse. After that, we noticed that it was freezing in the restaurant. It was chilly outside, but we've come there before and it's been warmer. When Tracy came around again, one of us said that it was very cold and asked if they could put up the heat. The overachieving waitress says "We are on the water, it is a cold restaurant. And there's nothing I can do about it!" and walks off in an angry huff. We all look at each other like- did that just happen? Then, a few minutes later, she tries to take the menu away. Since some of us got there later than the rest, one still had to order. So she told her to please leave the menu because she wants to order something still. This woman literally throws the menu on the table and speedily walks off muttering "Jesus!" under her breath. By this time, the one who still wanted to order didn't feel at all comfortable ordering with this waitress. So she went to the bar to give in her order. When Tracy came by to take the order, we told her it was put in at the bar. She storms off saying "Whatever!" And lastly, when the food was ready, she brought it out, slammed it on the table looking in the opposite direction, and walks off without so much as a word. I'll give this woman the benefit of the doubt. We all have bad days. But damn, this was the worst service I have ever experienced. Normally I would give this places 4 stars, but this waitress was so bad, it dropped it down to 2. Tracy is in seriousl need of customer service lessons. read more

The timing was perfect. The night before I was headed to Westport for the day, an episode of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" featured this restaurant. Once I saw Guy chowing on a bleu cheese stuffed burger, I knew I had to try this place out. This is definitely the epitome of a "dive". Located on a harbor, it's a small, unpretentious shack building, with boat trinkets decorating the place. I didn't even need to look at the menu, as Guy Fieri decided it for me. The bleu cheese burger met my expectations: juicy, cooked well, and oozy cheese. The onion rings were a good choice too; crispy and not too oily. The service isn't overly friendly, just straight shooting. When my friend asked how the Canadian bacon and mozzarella burger was, the waitress replied "Well, do you like those ingredients? Then you'll like this burger." I'll definitely go back and have the brie stuffed burger, that was also featured on "DDD". read more

Like everyone else, I have heard about this place for years and perhaps the hype made is somewhat of a let down. First of all its a dump, if you want a nice ambiance and something fancy, this is not for you. There is one waitress that seems to take forever because she handles every table. When I finally ordered I decided on the Rhode Island Chowder per her recommendation and also the black duck burger with an egg on it. Chowder was overly salty and not that hot for some reason, nothing special. Burger was 10 bucks without fries or any sides and was pretty good, not great. Overall, I would give this 2.5 stars but I rounded up because they cooked the burger perfectly to my liking. read more

My partner and I love dive bars, so we thought we'd try Black Duck while in the Westport Area. He ordered two domestic light beers, I ordered a vodka soda, and we split an order of clams. All of this came to a grand total of almost 50 bucks, with tip. They didn't give us an itemized receipt, so this can only lead me to believe they're charging an insane amount for well drinks and draught beer. (The clams were 16). We won't be back!
