Close your eyes. Picture a dive bar. Open your eyes. You're in The Duck Tavern. How do you know you're in a good dive bar? How do you know this is where the locals go? Well, I arrived at 4PM thinking it would be close to empty only to discover it was as busy as most places would wish to be in "prime time". I found the one and only vacant seat at the bar. Everyone there knew one another and everyone knew I was a newbie. The bar was lined with trophies and plaques for their sponsored teams of patrons. Yes, this was definitely a locals bar. Their beer selection was excellent for such a small place. I was disappointed (yes, I am a beer snob) to see people drinking Millers and Buds when their beer list was exceptional for a place of this caliber. I guess they can argue drinking those beers are cheaper, but I can counter that while you are drinking that water beer at a lower price, you could pay twice as much for a craft beer that tastes delicious and has a higher alcohol content. Therefore, it takes you buying three of your cheaper beers to equal the alcohol level (and none of the taste) of the craft beers. For me, this place is all about the clams. They are the best! They taste of the ocean with hints of sand and saltwater and all in the best ways possible. read more

Absolutely horrible. Pulled pork tasted as if it had been in the refrigerator and microwaved. My server didn't get the order correct and overcharged me. The lobster in the roll was, well, it must have been frozen, defrosted refrozen had freezer burn then was deep fried. I have never had lobster with less flavor. read more

My wife and I have been going to The Black Duck for 25 years. It used to be amazing for its burgers, steaks, and lobster roll. We went last night and we were so disappointed. The once-great huge, cheese stuffed burgers and steak fries are now small and run-of-the -mill, with the cheese nowhere to be found and the fries mediocre. And what used to be our go-to steak place no longer offers the variety of great steaks that it used to. The last time we had the lobster roll, that was still awesome and I hope it stays that way. The potato skins app was also excellent. And the servers were very nice and on their game. And of course, it's always a great place for a drink or two. This place is your classic DDD. We sat at the bar on a Tuesday night. They had a good selection of drafts on tap. We tried the mango habanero wings which were great! They had the Perfect amount of kick to them. We also each had the stuffed cheese burger and split fries. The curly fries are a a must if adding a side of fries. There are a few tables on the deck with the water view. I would note previous customers mentioned the apps and entrees came out together and this did happen but the bartender apologized and the burger was still warm when we were finished with the wings. I have eaten in some of the worst restaurants throughout the world over many decades. The prize for the very worst meal ever must be given to the Black Duck! Congratulations to all concerned. My medium rare cheeseburger was brown throughout, and featured a black, charred gristly crust. Every fried dish had a thick, crusty, brown, rancid shell, reeking of last month's cooking oil. The one thing that could possibly earn it the one (required) star is that the lower priced kids-menu burger is the same large one as on the adult menu, but also comes with fries, a drink and ice cream. We were in the area so we decided to go for a late lunch on a Sunday. We sat down, the place wasn't busy because it was nearly 1:30. It took forever to get a waitress to just come get our drink orders. I think we finally got our order in around 2:15 pm. When she finally showed up to get drink and then later food orders she was not exactly friendly, not very helpful and a bit rude. We ordered a variety of food from stuffed burgers, seafood sandwiches, etc. the food showed up after ~20 minutes. One burger was way over cooked and the food was really lacking in flavor, way overpriced and really nothing special. The entire experience wasn't memorable, and I would not go here again. read more

I came on a particularly busy night, it seems, as this cafe was set to close and then was saved at the last minute. Thankfully, we got a seat to have some food, since I really don't like standing and shouting in a super crowded space. The service was minimal but sufficient, which I will chalk up to the huge crowds. They kept up fine under the circumstances. The menu is typical New England seafood bar food, with Lobster dinners to fried appetizers. I rebelled against my New Englander roots and had the crawfish, which were tasty. It looks like the Black Duck Cafe is falling in to the river - literally. There is a slope in the dining room that is definitely noticeable. (Or maybe it is on a boat? I am not quite sure.) The space is loveably divey, but the lighting sort of gives it a grandma's basement feel rather than a dive bar. There was a band the night we went, but they weren't even setting up by 9:30ish and it was too crowded to comfortably visit with friends, so we left before the entertainment. I'd come back on maybe a less frenetic night or maybe during the summer to see if the waterside dive bar vibe is more appealing. 3 stars for a solid A-OK for now. read more

Saw them featured on the Food Network today and immediately made it a point to try them out. The steamers had me at hello. It's located right by the water so the breeze was very refreshing. There was a 30 minutes wait for a table so we opted for the bar instead. It was a good choice. The atmosphere is very laid back and our bartender was quite comedic and entertaining. For decades I have heard people rave about The Black Duck. I finally got there over this past weekend. I have to say, I don't endorse the raves. The food actually was very good, but the overall evening had some flaws. Parking is confusing and difficult. It was raining and that probably contributed to what is usually a not-so-noticeable dank smell inside. I was not impressed by either the exterior or the interior of the restaurant--the converted barge boat theme was uninteresting. The service was slow even though it was not very crowded. The selection of tap beers was disappointing. As I said, the food was good when it arrived. Our party of 3 had Fish & Chips, a Lobster Rueben, and a stuffed burger. The latter two entries are specialties. Everyone was very satisfied with their meals. Prices were relatively low for Westport, but not low enough to earn a "great deal" commendation. So I went to this place on recommendation from a fellow Yelper. Its a little hard to find if you've never been here before. I drove past it a couple times like a dummy. My boyfriend and I walked in and were immediately seated by, I think the owner. Not sure, nice blonde lady. Took our drink order right away and she must be psychic because she popped back up at the exact second we decided what to order. I ordered the stuffed burger and my boyfriend had the house salad and calamari. He asked for the house salad first and everything was brought at one time. However, she came out right away, apologized and even offered to not charge us, which I declined since it wasn't a big deal. The salad was fresh and tasty and my boyfriend said the calamari was the best he ever had. My burger was nice and juicy. The curly fries were delicious. And surprisingly, the little cup of coleslaw they put on the side was awesome. Nice and creamy and not too sweet. I wish they had given me more. My wife and i ate at the Black Duck Cafe after Diners Drive in and Dives. It was very busy, yet we had no problems with our order. We we served timely, and well. The food was good. My wife got the famous Brie Burger and I saw no issues. The taste of Brie oozed from the burger and added a unique flavor. The place seemed great for families. It was brunch time on a Sunday and the place was filled with parents and kids enjoying a black duck breakfast/lunch.
