The chicken pot pie drew my party in. We walked into the shop and found ourselves facing tons of small niche cooking/snack items. Loved looking through everything. Unfortunately, they do not heat up the pot pie for you. We got a soup flight instead, $10 for 3 shot glass sizes of soup and a bag of croutons. It was good soup: butternut squash, turkey chili, and potato leek. First of all the staff has a lot of knowledge on what they cook and how flavors will complement each other. I've had the fried chicken twice now and it's perfect -- The mashed potatoes are an ultra smooth purée. I had the garlic greens and must say I like them even better than the mashed potatoes!! So far I'm not totally in love with the sweets except for the salted Carmel chocolate cookie!!! And that made up for the baked goods such as a very gooey melty cupcake-- not a fan. It's worth a lot to walk into such a cute place and have a great experience every time. Still 5 stars!!! read more

Yelp needs to extend their stars to put into context of how fantastic this place is! We were driving in the area to explore the parks when we worked up an appetite. New to the area, we of course went on Yelp and found this restaurant. Upon entering you are met with a ton of local and craft specialty items, such as honeys, jams and salt. Next we looked at the display case and we were almost overwhelmed with the vast array of options to try here. Everything looked and tasted so fresh and delicious. We tried the trout skewer, the pesto chicken skewer and the chicken salad. Each item was absolutely fantastic. If I lived nearby I'd come here everyday. This is the type of place that should be in every guidebook and recommended as a must try when in the Hudson Valley. I feel so lucky to have stumbled in here and highly recommend everyone to come here and try something! read more

If it's a shortcut you need, Black Eyed Suzie's on Hurley Ave in Kingston, NY got you in more ways than one. They immediately make you feel welcome with their bright layout as you walk in. These ladies offer a wide variety of prepared Vegan, Vegetarian, Pescatarian and carnivore meals when you're looking for something quick. Black Eyed S's also has a nice lineup that includes dried fruits, independently-made Chocolate bars (they even carry Fruitition brand I love), organic canned beverages, kitchen textiles and so much more. I remember Black Eyed located in Saugerties- but in recent years, they've made this location home which is a snap for me to get to and knew I had to come and visit. Plus I had read, they make a mean Hot Cocoa. I was close to trying some of their savory items, but I ultimately went for their desserts. The clementine-almond slice cake was super moist, coconut cupcake was tasty and hubs loved the strawberry+ rhubarb thumbprint cookie. The Vegan chocolate mousse was fierce and was my favorite dessert out of the sweets I purchased. I mean...it really took me by surprise. I didn't ask about the vegan component in it, but it was smooth and packed with lots of cocoa flavor. Listen, this isn't your local Hannaford with discount prices. Picking out items may seem like you might be spending a fortune, but the prices were reasonable I guess. Whether it's savory you're picking up or sweets, there's something for everyone. This is a small place with a big punch! High quality food. Friendly staff. With that said I do understand that quality costs, but a few items and a couple drinks should not be as much as going out to a relatively nice dinner. My favorite place to get lunch. They have great food! The trout, asparagus and sweet potato is my favorite combo. As a pescatarian I love the fish and vegetable options. The food in the case isn't heated so I often end up eating it cold and it's still really good. I love all the little treats they have, perfect for putting together gift bags. The prices definitely add up but it's worth stopping in for the occasional meal. Good quality food! read more

Amazing little to-go market and bakery. Found this place on Yelp when looking for a place to eat near Kingston. If you want something hot, the soups are the way to go. We arrived at Black-Eyed Suzie's hungry and were surprised that it was more of a grab and go spot (wish we would've known that before going). This place is more of a high-end deli; equipped with a glass case of chilled food and lots of interesting, artisanal packaged goodies from small businesses, many of them local. Seating was limited but we snagged two seats outside. We were disappointed that they do not heat up the food in the case. Instead, it is more of a "heat up at home" but we were on a road trip and therefore couldn't heat anything up. The only thing served hot is the soup but we weren't in the mood for soup. We still decided to try their skewers (2 beef + 2 shrimp) and the potato salad-- noticing our hesitation, the woman taking orders assured us that they were good cold. We also ordered a hibiscus drink. Altogether it was almost $60. The prices here are STEEP. But to our surprise the skewers (even if they were cold) were delicious. The beef was tender, served with a yummy chimichurri sauce + the shrimp were big and cooked to perfection, lightly dressed with a garlic/parsley sauce. The potato salad (red potatoes with a mustard sauce and dill) was simple and a perfect accompaniment to the skewers. The food was super fresh + the quality made the prices seem reasonable. It seems like you pay for what you get here + I was really pleased. Would definitely return to try more of their food (if I am heading somewhere I can heat it up) because their chicken looked good! read more

We had them cater light refreshments for a community event and they certainly didn't disappoint! Firstly, everyone knew it was from BES! We had the Hudson Valley Cheese on Wood Platter, Colorful Crudités (OMG the avocado ranch!), Charcuterie Platter (all the meats were inhaled) and the Zatar Flatbreads- with a delicious fig chutney and this whipped goat cheese that was amazing. Just stopped into B-ES today after eyeing this place for about a year and am just blown away by their prepared foods and lovely staff. I had their kale slaw, shrimp skewers, tofu rectangles, cod cakes, parsnip fries and buttermilk fried chicken and I literally almost devoured all of this in one sitting. I thought I would give this place a try since its next my bank and a good cup of coffee with a decent snack can be a good thing early in the morning. Since I did not make my own this particular day. A VERY BAD IDEA!!! Not only was the coffee worse than dirt mixed with hot water the worker told me it tasted ok?!! Her statement alone did not warrant a $4.75 cup of coffee. Adding insult to injury that "it looked normal to her" She at least said I would be refunded, have not yet seen it hit my account, will follow up in updated review. Its a nice place place but the $14.00+ I paid for two cookies and 2 cups of the worse coffee are signs of never returning and writing this review. I write this review as community service to coffee drinkers and lovers. AVOID THE COFFEE HERE! I'd also eyed this place before finally visiting, hoping to grab a healthier alternative. ... Not impressed. The vibe & the prices were Soho, NYC, (cutesy & pretentious ...) not our humble city (which is NOT "Upstate"). Almost $30 yielded 3 minuscule veggie sides, lost in a giant box. The greens were tasty, but tough, the sugar snaps, & salad were Meh & Ok respectively. The gazpacho was yummy-ish. But I'd asked for medium green, which they charged me for, while serving up a small red. (!?) Overall, I'd have done better with Picnic Pizza, excellent pizza, for not NYC ... Moonburger, great meat-free fast food, or Deisings, a consistently excellent local treasure for over 50 years - all in the same neighborhood. This place is a real find. I ordered from the catering menu for a small reception. The food was fantastic! My guests commented again and again about how good it was. Pick up was easy. The cold food was arranged on compostable trays with everything that was needed. The hot food was in aluminum pans with clear reheating instructions.
