Went in for two tires -- left with a $3,000 repair quote…read more A few weeks ago my car had a major mechanical issue that required several days of work from my long-time, trusted mechanic and about $3,000 in repairs. During that process he had an extensive look at the vehicle. At the end of the work he told me that when my upcoming state inspection came due, I would likely need two new front tires but everything else looked good. Today, March 13, 2026, I went to Midas Discount Tire & Auto Service on Kimberton Road in Phoenixville, PA simply to purchase those two front tires for my Buick Enclave. For convenience, I agreed to have them perform the Pennsylvania inspection at the same time. After the inspection, I was told the car needed approximately $3,000 in additional repairs in order to pass. When I mentioned that my mechanic had just worked extensively on the vehicle and had not identified those issues, the employee told me that my mechanic was "committing fraud." I told them I would just take the failed inspection and have my regular mechanic review their findings. At that point I was told that they would report the required repairs to the state inspection system so that another shop would not be able to pass the car without completing those repairs. I was also told they would not sell or install the tires unless I agreed to the additional work. Regarding the first claim, it is materially false. State inspection records from a first, failed attempt do not mandate repairs if a subsequent, independent inspection shows the vehicle passes. I came in expecting a routine tire purchase and inspection. Instead, I left feeling pressured into approving thousands of dollars in repairs I had not anticipated. I'll be taking the vehicle back to my regular mechanic for a second opinion before authorizing anything further. Based on my experience, I would proceed cautiously and consider getting a second opinion before approving significant repairs.

They told me to make an appointment. I explained that they could tell me over the phone . They took my phone number and said they would call me back. I then took a chance and drove to C & J tires. I know next time I need tires, they will get my business. I am already a customer by the way.

Jessica, the manager and a great addition when she came on board a couple years ago, is always welcoming and conscientious, and her team is equally as thorough and pleasant. A recent visit brought me there, simply because my low tire pressure sensor activated, so I conveniently pulled in and technician, Tim, gave four quick, complimentary shots of air and a friendly salutation - and I was on my way, but not before I remembered to come back soon with another one of my vehicle's, which needs new wiper blades. [I love CJ's free air fill-ups when they're able to do so, policy.] Through the years, I've utilized this CJ's for tire repairs, rotations and replacements, and for other ancillaries, like those wiper blades - all with an appreciation for locally supporting a dedicated team which represents CJ's well.

Called Mr. Tire to check availability for installation ahead of doing so on a Monday. They had availability for a Wednesday AM install along with a state inspection. Cost was reasonable for the tire size (50", four tires $140). I've been driving on the tires for 5 days and they ride well. No issues with alignment, balance etc. Don from the shop called me Monday afternoon to confirm the appointment as I scheduled with the Mr. Tire call center (normal to do so). Tires from Tire Rack (from DE warehouse) safely arrived/intercepted there on Tuesday and were ready for install. I dropped my car 8:30am and car was ready +30min post the ETA provided 1:30pm vs 2pm. No big deal for me. Had I dropped it at 7:30am it would have been sooner. Generally didn't feel scammed here --as sad as that bar is to write about as a woman-- requesting auto care services. Also, car was returned without any new damage. Thank you for an uneventful experience. Based on my one specific scenario/ data point, I would recommend this spot. It's worth noting that 260 Bridge Cafe is across the street so if you were going to 'wait' for your car, that cafe (and quite frankly all of Bridge St) is at your disposal and totally within walking distance! There is a coworking space Work2together right on Gay St.
