During a short trip at the Harrison hot springs resort, my partner and I wanted to have some schnitzel. This restaurant has outdoor seating with a wonderful view of the lake & mountains! I had to sit inside, because my allergies were wildly acting up. We ordered the schnitzel with mushrooms and goulash soup. I really enjoyed the schnitzel - perfectly crispy, yet the meat was still tender inside. I didn't love the white sauce on top because it was slightly sour, but eating it all together with the schnitzel and mushrooms were good. The potato hash on the side was heavenly and so flavourful. Potatoes are great. The goulash was good too! It tasted very homey and it helped to relax me from my allergies lol. The bread on the side was delicious. Since offshore investors bought it, the place has become pretty run-down but the prices are still huge. They've also dug up the public access hot pool, guaranteed in their deed to remain public.) Whether it's after a summer afternoon and a chance to lounge on the beach with family and friends or a drive on a snowy day after Christmas, we've always enjoyed this destination restaurant. Not exceptionally expensive, with vegetarian options for our family's beloved vegetarian, we always get a hearty meal with great flavour, texture and good sides included. Well worth the beautiful drive. Ended up going to this restaurant twice during my time at Harrison for small meals. First: dinner with champignon schnitzel and goulash soup. Second: lunch with seafood and white sauce spaetzle and potato pancakes. The soup was just okay for me. It was hearty and good, but it wasn't worth the price in my opinion. They also only give you a pittance of three tiny sliced pieces of baguette.. Yummy slices though! The schnitzel was on point. Crispy and tender. The mushrooms and bearnaise sauce paired well. The red cabbage was soft and slightly pickled. The fried potatoes were so delicious. Slightly crispy, perfectly salted, and soft for my soft mouth. However, the vegetables were sad -- bland and hard. It was my first time having spaetzle, and it was delicious. LOTS of tiny shrimps, two scallops, and some squid tentacles. The spaetzle itself had a nice crisp. Sauce was great. This was my favourite dish from here. The potato pancake was equally good, but too small for the price. It's not good enough to get again for that much. It's like a hashbrown patty, but the potato is grated more fine, and it's more soft than crispy. I didn't like the sauce it came with too much -- it had a sour tinge to it which I don't like. My wife and I decided on BFSSH for our first dinner on a 3-night stay in Harrison. Staff were friendly and atmosphere was pretty good. We both ordered Schnitzel and a beer. She got Schnitzel Madagascar and I got one with some roasted peppers or something under a blanket of cheese. We both subbed spaetzle in lieu of potatoes. I have been for schnitzel in a few different places (including Heidelberg). This schnitzel was...well...schnitzel. Pork, pounded flat, coated with breadcrumbs and pan fried. It wasn't particularly flavorful and the cheese topping was also strangely bland. Was an 'ok' dinner but over-priced for the quality. The beer was cold and tasty! read more

Delicious food and large portions. They even allow well behaved dogs on outside patio, which was great because we were planning takeout, not knowing our dogs would be allowed. Our venue for dinner the last evening of our stay in Harrison last week. The restaurant well-known to us, and the outdoor patio setting just looked so inviting. Daughter and I had caught a cool and tall 'Krombacher Pilsner' draft out on the patio during a walkabout earlier that day - yum, and great cordial service. With those thoughts in mind, it was easy to consider doing dinner there later. We arrived about 5:30 am, and caught the table up back in the corner of the upper level of the outdoor patio. Yea!! I had had my eyes on that one earlier, and had hoped it might be available for us (up and away from any direct sun). Mom and daughter each ordered 'Schnitzel Champignon', and for me, it was their 'Black Forest Salad', and an appetizer of 'Calamari'. From what I could hear during the course of our meal, and after walking back to our hotel, the ladies sure enjoyed their schnitzels, and the sides included. I know I thoroughly enjoyed one of the best green salads tasted in a long while - large, and the ingredients so fresh, crisp, and tasty. But darn, seems I was so impressed, I dug in and totally forgot to capture a picture! The calamari were flavourful and well-prepared, and provided great company with the salad. On the main drag in Harrison is The Black Forest Restaurant. Inside is a circa 1980s vibe and has a nice patio overlooking the lake. The staff was friendly and attentive and the space is a little dark and intimate. The food was great and incredibly filling. The schnitzels were crispy and flavourful but the star if the shoe was the crispy pork hock. This a slow oven braised pork hock that is them crisped up to perfection right before serving. When I first came to this place, it was almost ten years ago, all I remembered was the German beer because it was super crowded and we couldn't get a seat, but this time, I was able to have a proper meal and it was pretty satisfying. We ordered the bratwurst as an appetizer, topped some sour cabbage and Dijon Mustard. The sausage was seasoned well and cooked properly, although it was a little on the dry side imo, but that's what the sauces for right? Because I don't usually eat a lot of pork, so I decided to try the pork hock, even though I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it. We also ordered the schnitzel Champion (pork cutlet), which is also known as a specialty of the restaurant. I'd have to say the portions of the food here is pretty generous, both of us didn't get to finish our food, and had to take them to go. On top of that, the price is very affordable, and for the portion that we pay, it's very much worth it. The pork hock was very tender, the skin has a light brown color which was nicely baked. I was amazed by how juicy it is inside, and the fat were not greasy at all. The service was also very well, we sat on the heated patio, with a nice street / Mountain View. First things first. My experience at black forest restaurant was amazing. I arrived and asked to sit early. I was sat immediately. The restaurants atmosphere was wonderful, I enjoyed the German Style Decor. I ordered the Vienna Scihnitzel and was served very quickly. The food was fresh and hot, and the portion was giant. The table was clean, and the restaurant was clean. The washroom was clean, but there were wet marks on the floor. Our waiter was super nice. I had a very enjoyable experience. When the food arrived, the size of the Schnitzel surprised me; I wasn't expecting so much. The Pork Hock was also decent sized, but a large proportion was unedible because it was fat. Flavour and seasoning was terrific, and the sides of potato salad and pickled cabbage offered a nice contrast to the meat. Prices were high, but that isn't unusual for German food. I've never had a more uncomfortable experience with a server. Seemed like he wasn't into serving us the entire evening. The restaurant was also not busy. Asked if we (a group of 7) wanted separate bills, we said yes and nothing was written down. Had to ask for our bill twice before he came back and asked if we were alright splitting everything evenly. We said no and he had to come back to write everything down. The menu said automatic gratuity of 18% of groups of 8 or more. We are 7 so asked for it to be taken off the bill, had to wait another 15 minutes for the bills to come back. Then made a comment when we were paying about the tip percentage being low/none at all?? Just a hop, skip, and jump away from the Harrison Hot Springs Resort, Black Forest Restaurant is definitely a must-stop for any visit to this beautiful lakeside town. Coming on a rainy Sunday night for dinner around 5:30pm, it was just a few minutes walk away from the resort. The place seemed half full, and we got the choice of either the outside or inside seating. The glass screens were placed around the outside and had a view of the lit up street (it was completely dark by this time of the day). We chose the outside seating and were welcomed with heaters blasting, a fake fire burning, and a huge TV screen running old sitcoms. When at a German restaurant, how can you not try some draft beers? We got glasses of the Krombacher dark. Did not disappoint. I personally thought it was light and malty and definitely easy to finish. If you order before 6pm, you can get the early bird pricing on some of their select meals. I ordered the Vienna Schnitzel which was about $2 cheaper because of the early bird. I have never had schnitzel before, but it basically was very thinly pounded meat that is breaded and fried. The meal also came with red cabbage, potatoes, and some other veges. I definitely recommend the schnitzel: it had a nice crunch and was easy to wolf down. The potatoes were buttery and the sweetness of the red cabbage rounded out the palette pretty well. It was our very first German experience! Hubby and I were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and we got a very nice cozy table. The service was amazing. We enjoyed every dish that we ordered and can't wait to go back. We definitely over ate but it was well worth it. For our starters we had the onion soup, calamari and escargot. The onion soup was on the smaller size but packed with all the flavors. Calamari was crispy and not oily. Escargot was delicious with savory butter and the best toasted bread. We spent a night in Harrison Hot Springs. As we walked on the beautiful boardwalk we saw the sign of German restaurant. Nice rustic looking restaurant from the front but a bit kinda out-dated from inside. The waiter that we had doesn't speak German as my partner's dad tried to speak in German with him. I ordered an appetizer Spätzle Nordsee - Austrian/German pasta with shrimp, scallops, crab meat in a white wine sauce since I don't feel eating a big portion of meal. My food was ok. Mind you, I'm not an expert in German/Austrian foods compare to two other people (my partner and his dad) who ate with me at that time and have been eating this type of foods for their entire life. My partner was ordering Jägerschnitzel (Hunter Schnitzel with Mushroom Gravy) which was served with spätzle. According to him, the food was ok not that great. Way overpriced. Meanwhile, my partner's dad had Schnitzel Cordeu Bleu Champignon. When the server asked us how the food is, his dad was saying cordon bleu should be thicker as it's stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese compare to a regular schnitzel. The waiter said "maybe back home but this is in Canada" I was quite surprised by the waiter answered that left me a bit disappointment. The only thing that I've could think why this restaurant is survived is because it's located in the tourist area.
