I came here a few days ago as part of an end-of-semester dinner for my German class. You're never sure what the service will be like with a big group (I think we were about fifteen people, maybe more) but the server was very attentive and friendly. My husband and I visited Germany a year ago so we were excited to try out the sausages at Black Forest Tap House. My husband started with a dunkel beer, which he enjoyed. We also ordered a pretzel, which had a deliciously chewy exterior and perfectly soft interior. The pretzel, which is quite large, comes with a few dipping sauces as well. For dinner, we ordered from the "sausage" part of the menu. You can choose the way your sausage is prepared and then the type of sausage you want. We had a Berliner Wurste with Bratwurste, a Black Forest Wurste with Knockwurste, and Wurste and Jager Spatzle with Bauernwurste. Each meal came with a sausage on a roll with fries. I especially enjoyed the taste of Berliner with the spicy mustard and sauerkraut. The Bratwurste sausage was my favorite of the 3 wurstes! The portion of the menu devoted to authentic German food is minimal and most of the meal could be described as popular German-inspired food (e.g. Dusseldorf Cobb Salad). We'd love to see more authentic options on the menu in the future. At times, we felt a bit overwhelmed by the service: we were asked almost 5 times if our pretzel tower could be removed even though we still had pretzel left. Ok just to start off, wow! There are so many things to love about this place. My wife and I were occasional diners at Joseph's. We moved to Virginian for a few years and came back to Harford county and we're interested to see what was there now. I also really like German food and German beer so I was excited about there being some continuity. Black Forest in the name set the tone but then the word taphouse made me think of something more American and casual. That pretty much embodies the actual feel of the place. Dark wood but high ceilings and an airy open feel, at least in the bar area where we sat. There was also an enticing outdoor seating area with space heaters. The first three things I noticed were 1) the music was great. Not too loud but loud enough to enjoy a bunch of great classic songs from I'd say the 60s to the 90s. 2) Second thing I noticed was the menu. It's obvious a tremendous Amon to of though went into it. Lots of appetizers, small plates, salads, handhelds, entrees with what I thought were very reasonable prices. Basically you could mix and match very easily based on how hungry you are or what you want to spend. 3) Third thing I noticed was the bar. It was filled with popular high end choices if liquor and had about 20 taps. I watched bartenders and, while you g, they obviously k wow what they were doing, and I'll add that she. We walked out the bartender made sure to say goodbye even though we had never interacted. It's the kind of place where the staff is taught to leap out of your way when you're on your way to the bathroom, as happened to me at the end. Back to the bar: first thing on the cocktail list was a Nolet's Martini, with a twist. How classy is that? Most bars don't even stock Nolets. It was generous and made perfectly. The beer list was very much to my taste too. It started off with seven or eight great German offerings, which I plan to work my way through. Then there was a section of hoppy offerings, like the IPAs that are currently ruining beer. I just skipped over it and left it to the youngsters, then there a section that was all stouts and porters. I'm hooked. We shared an enormous fresh baked Bavarian pretzel that came with a cheese sauce for my wife and spicy mustard for me. It was so good that we ate the whole thing. My wife can't eat much and just ordered an appetizer. The coconut shrimp. I was skeptical because at most restaurants coconut shrimp is a throwaway that probably Arrives frozen but this tastes homemade and was cooked perfectly and actually tasted of coconut. For Me, my first time, it had to be the wurst platter, which came with one each kockwurst , bratwurst, and bauernwurst, accompanied by spatzel, spicy Mustard and curry ketchup, and home made red cabbage. I also asked them to bring me some of the sauerkraut too. Everything was delicious and I ended up taking the bauernwurst home. The sausages were plump, cooked perfectly, very fresh and had that snap when you cut into them. If I had one criticism it was that a few of the offerings seemed a trifle under salted, including the spaetzel, the red cabbage, which was also lacking in acidity, and the wursts themselves. The sauerkraut was perfect. With my meal I had a generously poured dunkels which complimented the food perfectly. We enjoyed ourselves so much we ended up having dessert. My wife had the peanut butter pie which was creamy and good, a fine example of the type. I had something really unusual. Our waitress, Dee who was excellent. She was attentive and knew the menu, and told us a little bit of the history of the place, told me "we have homemade ice cream, but we only have one flavor left right now, it's fig and crystallized ginger." she had me a crystallized ginger. A generous portion of a really unusual, delicious and complex ice cream. If that's the only thing they had left I could only imagine what they were already sold out of. We will most definitely be back. I can't wait to work my way through the German beer and the various parts of the menu. I have a lot of friends who I think would really enjoy it. A few suggestions I would make, would be that they could really use some German style potato salad as a side dish, and I really hope that we can look forward to sour beef come the winter. read more

We lived in Germany for three years ever since we have been looking for a place that can take us back. Black Forest is the place. We are moving to MD from Oklahoma in a month, we where in a house hunting trip and where hungry. I did a general search and this place came up. The food was perfect the restaurant atmosphere was very German. We sat outside, we truly felt as if we where in our favorite German restaurant. We ordered the pretzel, it took me back to Nuremberg! Where was the flavor? The French onion soup was pure liquid. Where was the texture? Give me cheese or give me... at least some cream?! My mother raved about the overstuffed Reuben and though the sandwich did leave me full it did not leave me fulfilled... And the simple Caesar salad left me asking , "E tu brute?" I could have drowned all of my sorrows in the heaps of dressing that was on this salad. But in all seriousness I was not impressed and the staff was not very attentive. read more

DON'T EAT HERE! I was on the bathroom floor semi-conscious 10 minutes after eating their seafood. Vomiting and severe food poisoning symptoms followed. 911 was called, an ambulance took me to the ER. There were restaurant staff witnesses, other diners, and a nearby nurse that helped me. I gave the owners almost a year to make this right by at least refunding my meal/help with medical bills. They were heartless and rude with no ethical morals. I do not have seafood allergies, so there is no other explanation. See the attached ambulance and ER report. I am very surprised at the reviews given to this establishment because after three visits I have determined that this place is damn good. Firstly I love the soft pretzels. I don't know what I love the most; the actual pretzel, the awesome dipping sauces, or the artful custom stands on which they are served. It is an excellent presentation and totally delivers in the flavor category. I will say however that I don't like the fact that they are coated in butter or oil ala Aunt Annie's in the airport. But this is a simple fix--just request no oil. The pork osso bucco is excellent and filling. This past visit The wife and I shared the stuffed soft shells, which were perfectly prepared and excellent. We also had and Maine to Maryland salad that featured lobster salad and crab salad. It was as clever as it was delicious. Black Forest has a very attractive and inviting bar with a great beer list. And I have only experienced excellent service. It is a wonderful addition to Fallston cuisine and deserve every one of the five stars I am giving it. read more

I was impressed. The outside is beautiful. The inside is nicely laid out. There is an outside dining area. It was probably there before Covid. The inside has a beer hall with a bar and there is a quieter dining room. The menu is extensive and we had trouble deciding. One of us got the steak with mushrooms, onions and bacon in a sauce. She said it was delicious. My other friend is vegan and asked if she could pick things from the menu to put together her own meal. It was not a problem. She chose sautéed shrimp, asparagus, spinach and sweet potato. All were freshly made. I ordered osso bucco? I don't spell well. It was delicious. I asked for spatzel instead of mashed potatoes and they were freshly made. It all came in a wonderful mushroom sauce. Wonderful. Everything was delicious. My wife and I stopped in for a drink and bite after making a trip to Towson. Great beer selection but my wife was a little disappointed with a light pour of her wine. I've eaten here several times. The food and service has been ok. However the last two times I've had problems getting a table. The first time they claimed they did not have my reservation and we (party of 7) had to wait for 30 min even though I had called and placed a reservation days prior. Today I called and asked for a reservation for 6. They said they did not take reservations for same day seating. I then called on my way to the restaurant and asked if they have a table for 6 available. They said they did but would not hold it and would also not guarantee availability until I showed up. I showed up 1 min after speaking to the person on the phone (Kelly) and guess what, a party of six had apparently just walked in a claimed the table that Kelly said had been available. This was obviously not true. Never giving my business to this restaurant again. read more

Went on a Thursday evening with a group of friends and sat in the bar area. I ordered a side salad with blackened salmon and it was delicious. The side salad is a substantial size. I also tried the potato pancakes and they were tasty. The service was good, she even split our check which was super helpful. I really enjoyed the music selection too! Met 3 friends last night for dinner. A total disaster! 2 of us ordered the filet Chesapeake medium rare. Both came out well well done. The crab topping was too salty. The asparagus was tough. Another ordered a rare burger. It too was well done. The forth ordered stuffed shrimp. Once again the crab stuffing was salty. The waitress never ask if there was a problem. I really like the place. It has a German theme, a German food menu, lots of German beers. The food is authentic tasty and good. The beers are plenty they serve and a half Liter glasses. Currently everything is set for the COVID virus social spacing. It it's extremely clean, and all staff members wear masks. Outdoor seating is available, along with the regular dining room. First visit on a Saturday around 7:45. We were told the wait would be 30 minutes and we could wait in the bar. It was really only a 10 minute wait for a table near the bar which was fine. It was very crowded but it's such a big place that it didn't feel claustrophobic. I got the Weihenstephaner beer. I'm not a huge beer person but I liked it because it wasn't crazy hoppy and it was a nice accompaniment to our food. There looked to be a beer for just about anyone on the menu. Food: To my surprise the onion rings with horseradish dip were perfect. They were hot but stayed together when you eat them. I got the pork schnitzel which was good but not a traditional schnitzel, more like a pork roulade. Still, very different and tasted great. My husband got the brat platter which he praised. Both came with pickled red cabbage and spaetzle. Don't let that scare you! The service was good; our waitress was not very cheerful but she was attentive to us and everything came out on time and to order. Maybe her feet hurt or she was having a bad day, that's ok. Good bus boys took away our app plates and empty glasses. I really liked this place overall. The food was great, the interior was clean and welcoming, and the drink menu is huge. Fallston may seem far away from where you might usually go out to eat but try something new, it's worth it. read more

Disappointed was my take on this establishment. The hostess was a rather uncaring young lady who certainly didn't give us a welcoming feeling. Our presence seemed more of a burden. Rather than wait for a table we found a place at the bar. A nice selection of beers were available. That's where the evening took a turn. The pressure to order our food, eat it, and turn the seats was evident throughout. I understand the limited seating during these times but with the price of a meal here we didn't appreciate the "bums rush". When ordering we were advised the Spaetlze was not available. Like going to an Italian restaurant and being out of ziti ! My friend ordered French onion soup which was salty but edible. She had barely eaten any when our main course arrived. I requested the plates be returned to the kitchen until we were ready for them. This brought out a man who had been lurking behind the bar, who I assumed was the manager. I explained the situation and he somewhat reluctantly took the dishes away. When my friend was almost finished her soup I asked for our food. Almost immediately from around back of the bar came the food. It was obvious no attempt had been made to keep the food warm. At this point my girlfriend said she was hungry and ate some of her food. I returned mine. We soon paid and left. Rather disappointed since this place isn't exactly down the street from us. We usually go to Das Bierhalle in Carney Md. which is much closer when we want German faire but thought this might be a nice change. How wrong we were. Terrible food and and even worse service. We have given this place two tries and both dining experiences were awful. We were seated at a table that had food on the chair and large pieces of food under the chairs and table. The restaurant is just dingy and in desperate need of a deep cleaning. The schnitzel was over cooked, tough and dry. The mini potato pancakes were tasty, but very inconsistently cooked, they were only cooked on one side and soggy on the other side. Waitstaff was rude. When our appetizer was brought to our table the server asked if we wanted it in the middle of the table and we said yes. She couldn't have put it any closer to the edge of the table, it would have otherwise fallen off the table onto the floor. She hastily walked away . I had to yell across the room to stop her to get is silverware and napkins. This is by far the worst German restaurant we have ever been. read more

My parents love this place. They are both German. I actually went here with them for dinner when I visited about a year ago or so. For my mom's 50th birthday, I wanted to get them a gift card for a night out for dinner and drinks at their favorite local restaurant/tap house. There's no option to buy a gift card online and I don't live anywhere near here so I called and asked if I could to pay for a $100 gift card on the phone if they could mail it to me so I could mail it to my parents with a birthday card. The young woman who answered the phone said "we don't do gift cards on the phone. you have have to come in." She was so eager to hang up and get rid of me. I asked her to please confirm/double check with a manager as I'd really like to buy a gift card for my parents. While I was waiting on the phone, I overheard in the background, in a very rude tone, "just tell her we don't do gift cards." Another young woman's voice answered the phone and said "Hello?" She didn't introduce herself as a manager. I presented my request and she just said, "no we won't do that". Not once did I hear, "I'm so sorry, we aren't able to do that. I apologize for any inconvenience." Nothing along those lines at all. This restaurant disappointed the family of loyal customers and were rude about it. I have purchased gift cards from other restaurant on the phone before, and it not a problem at all. I am truly disappointed in the lack of willingness to work with me and how dismissive the staff was in addition to the lack of respect for me as a human being and terrible customer service...and I'm sure the owner(s) wouldn't be happy they are turning down money.
