Quaint and uniquely Bavarian (German). A welcoming restaurant with a warm atmosphere. A very pleasant staff, although quite American and no one wears lederhosen or has an accent. The beverage menu is extensive with an impressive variety of beers. I selected the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Doppleboch - a "lightly oak smoked and malty amber lager." The food selection - appetizers, salads, soups, and entrees is an authentic German selection. I choose the sauerbraten with two sides - spatzle with cheese and potato dumplings with the sauerbraten gravy. The meal came out in short order after the beer. The meal was very good. The beef was a bit tough and the gravy was a bit sweet. Overall it seemed to not have been vinegar marinated for a week, although when asked, the kitchen stated they marinate in vinegar for a week. The potatoes dumpling with Sara gravy tasted authentic. The sparkle with garlic cheese was very good - some of the best I've ever had. I ordered German chocolate cake with a cup of regular coffee. It was a quite excellent slice of cake! The restaurant is very clean throughout. I would recommend it in this neck of the woods; while if in DC, consider going to Old Europe restaurant on Wisconsin Ave as another authentic alternative. read more

If you loved historic Blobs Park, you will enjoy Bavarian Brauhaus. The former owners of Blobs Park have recreated the look, feel and menu in the Hanover location. My father and I went to satisfy our craving for authentic southern German food. We were welcomed and immediately felt like family. We split a sample platter of jaeger schnitzel, sausages and sides. Very tasty. We took advantage of the great selection of German beers on tap. The decor is pretty basic, but the welcoming atmosphere by the owners and staff more than makes up for it. Unfortunately, we had a large dinner party planned for the evening and it was decided that the cuisine would be German. In an attempt to secure a table for a large party, I called for a reservation and the number listed on their website was not a working number, nor did they respond to emails. As most of our party was from the Eastern Shore, we opted to eat elsewhere to avoid the risk of the restaurant being closed. Website's should be informative as well as an advertisement for a business, but theirs comes up short, including the lack of pricing for their menu. My partner and I decided to try this place during happy hour since we often drive by it, and he loves this type of food. Upon entering, we immediately noticed a musty, mildew-like smell that we shrugged off, thinking it might be part of the restaurant's vibe (although there was also a dog inside, which raised some questions about health standards). We weren't greeted for a few minutes, so we took the initiative to walk ourselves over to the bar. We ordered the wurst platter, which, unfortunately, was a disappointment--aside from the horseradish, which was the only redeeming part. It was the first time I've seen my partner leave an appetizer unfinished. I ordered an orange crush from the happy hour menu, and my partner got a large beer. However, when we received our drinks, my partner's beer was served in a small glass, while everyone else's beers came in large glasses. We were the only Asian people at the bar, and it wasn't until we saw an African American guest arrive and receive the same smaller beer glass that I started to feel uncomfortable. As we ate, the bartender never checked on us once, and it felt as though we were completely ignored while the other customers, who were all white, received all the attention. This hidden gem in Anne Arundel County is quite the treat! Apparently, they've been open for more than 8 years, and my friends and I hadn't heard of them. We had a BIG group, and they took our reservation for a Friday night without batting an eye. On arrival, they were ready for us, and seated us immediately. The drinks came out faster than magic. By the way, a medium beer is 1 Liter. The large is "Das Boot"! The menu is as expected from a Bavarian restaurant, with some surprises. For appetizers, I went with the sausage sampler, and some potato pancakes. Both made my mouth water. The pork shank looked amazing, but for my main course, I went with the Weiner Schnitzel. I had to double up on the spatzle, but I did get a taste of the amazing green beans. With awesome food, top tier service, and great parking, this place is fantastic! read more

The restaurant is lively with a live performer singing, a huge bar to sip (or chug) some adult beverages while enjoying some delicious food. There is plenty of seating inside the restaurant. The customer service is excellent. Our waitress was working hard covering majority of the tables. Kudos to her! The food was good. We got the sausage appetizer platter which has a variety of sausages. The chicken cordon bleu, the Schnitzel, and the potato cakes. Everything tasted good. Our first visit here and the food was marvelous. We had the whole place to ourselves and the cucumber salad was refreshing and really complimented our main courses. We should have known something was wrong when at 530pm there was no one seated for dinner but the parking lot was packed for the bar potion of the restaurant. Hint: no one at the bar was eating. We ordered the Jaret schnitzel for two. We chewed our food in silence trying to comprehend how food could be this bad. I can't recall the name of our waitress, but she was very friendly, knowledgeable about every item across various menus (dinner, bar, and beverages), and she was very patient given that 2 in my party were annoyingly indecisive and asked a ton of questions. I ordered the house Pinot Grigio, which was absolutely delicious much to my delight. It was light, fruity, and a little sweet, but not overly so. It was also happy hour at the time so I got a nice discount! For my meal, I went with the chicken schnitzel and added the mushroom sauce. My sides were spatzle and the veggie of the day, sautéed green beans. The spatzle was bland, but I just dipped it in the AMAZING mushroom sauce. Seriously, I want to pour that sauce on my whole life! After spending many a summer nights at Blobs Park and the subsequent closure, I felt the area was missing out on a place to celebrate, enjoy, and introduce German culture in the Baltimore/DC corridor. I was skeptical that the old Gunnings location could provide that experience and although there's no replacing Blobs, the food and beer selection take you to that place of Gemütlichkeit for a brief moment. My only criticism would be that they need to advertise and step up the decor just a little to either provide a bierhall or hunting lodge experience. Well done though with superb German offerings like Sauerbraten and sausages with red cabbage, sauerkraut, and potato salad. Prost!! read more

What a terrible disappointment. We chose to sit in the restaurant area, where there was only one other table seated... should have been a clear sign, but we were looking forward to some good German food. The beer selection was reasonable; the wines were awfully overpriced. The food prices were absolutely outrageous. A Jägerschnitzel was $23 or $24. That's for about $5 pork, mushrooms, and two likewise cheap sides. My kids know how to make schnitzel. There's nothing complicated or expensive about it. Yet this German restaurant couldn't get it or any of the other food right. Based on the food temperatures and level of chewiness, I give 90% odds it was all microwaved. The Bierkäsesuppe was tolerable... but somehow tepid which shouldn't be possible if it were made relatively fresh rather than reheated. The Käsespätzle was likewise tolerable, but not right and almost certainly microwaved. The potatoes were flavored right... had they been cold potatoes. But not flavored correctly for hot potatoes, nor served properly as a hot German side of potatoes. This place was not at all authentic. Flavors were not good or right. Cook was not right. While I didn't try with every single employee, the ones I spoke to didn't even speak or understand any German. Not necessary for good German food, but if you're selling yourself as authentic German... maybe make an effort. I know if I go to a Mexican joint and spout some Spanish they'll understand. There are certainly mediocre German restaurants in germany, but the thing about German food is that it's meat and potatoes- hearty, homey food at cheap prices. That's why even mediocre German restaurants are packed every night of the week, not struggling to turn three tables a night like this place. You can't charge $25 for a $10 meal and then not even try to make it taste good. Also noted the restaurant hawking its crab options and crab night. Know what every restaurant in Maryland is selling? Crab. So if you're trying to set yourself apart as an authentic German restaurant, avoid the crab and try selling good, hearty German food at reasonable prices. After we noted the quality of the food, politely, to the waitress she said "well, the owner uses traditional recipes from her grandmother. Maybe this just isn't the Bavarian food you're used to." After years of eating German cooking in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, I assured the waitress if the owner had German recipes that she defiantly wasn't following them. The food exceeded my expectations. If you grew up eating German food this definitely is worth the visit. The coleslaw was creamy and flavorful. The red potatoes was reminiscent of my grandmother's. The schnitzel was heaven. The only drawback was the long wait for drinks. An easy fix would likely just leave a pitcher of water on the table. You don't know what you're getting into with a German restaurant in a suburban strip center. Looking for something unique on our drive back to BWI airport led us to The Bavarian Brauhaus. Large wooden entry doors made our voyage to the other side seem authentic, as did the wooden décor, beer signs and Christmas decorations. The server asked if we would like to eat in the dining room or bar area. We chose the dining room and were seated near a large mural of a female figure holding a tablet. A quick search for the word depicted revealed it was from a German social organization celebrating friendship and art. We ordered beer and our server suggested a pretzel as an appetizer. That sounded great and tasted even better. It was served with four different dipping mustards. The vegetarian options were spätzle noodles in various creams and cheeses. It was late and I didn't want anything that heavy so I ordered from the appetizer menu: potato pancakes with apple sauce with a side of red cabbage. Our table also had chicken schnitzel and one of the largest pork chops I had ever seen. There were minor complaints from someone in our party who doesn't like German food in general, but over-all there wasn't much to argue with. While it isn't cheap, the portions are large and you certainly feel you are paying for quality. The Bavarian Brauhaus was an excellent way to close out our day. read more

I stopped here for a quick lunch. Good solid German food, but limited variety to choose from compared to what is available at dinner time. The Jaegerschnitzel was very good, for sides I had the sauerkraut (with bacon and apples) and the warm potato salad (also with bacon). The sauerkraut was truly great. The service was also great. From the front door to the wait staff to the manager checking that everything was good during the meal. All without being burdensome or intrusive. The dining room has a good old world feel to it. A change from the crab house that previously occupied this space. I am picky about German food after having spent a bunch of time in Germany for work. There is no reason for the Bavarian Brauhaus to have anything but good reviews. Love that there is usually not a wait, that it isn't crowded or crazy, and the food is GOOD. The bar side can get loud and full, but dinner side is a nice respite from the crazy everywhere else! Their specials are some of my favorite dishes. If you can catch the shepherds pie, Cornish game hen, or the German pizza (don't remember if that was the verbatim name)' do it. Also love the jaeger and chicken schnitzels. We came to this restaurant surly excited to try something new! I was pleasantly surprised by the restaurants division between the bar and the dining area. We went in the evening so the distinction between the bar and restaurant was much appreciated as it was appropriate for the little one. However, the service was a no-go!! In fact it was frightening! We waited, and waited, and WAITED (did I say we waited...oh yeah)....on the waitress to come back to take our entree orders. But after figuring she must be on her lunch or dinner break we decided to leave the next time we were lucky enough to get a glimpse of the sneaky leprechaun. When she walked by we asked for the check. I gave her my card immediately so we could leave ASAP. (Bad decision) My card was swiped for the wrong total, so I'll have to keep an eye on my bank statement to make sure it was corrected as they claim (yay!). After it was corrected, the boss whispered about us to a waitress and loudly called us "TYPICAL" I didn't address the matter, after much consideration I decided not to tip, signed the corrected check and headed out the door. When we were OUTSIDE of the restaurant about to get in our vehicle, the boss stormed out behind us and violently wanted to know why we didn't tip...after being nastily addressed by her...I'm even more glad we didn't. I and a group of friends had dinner here a few nights ago. It as pretty busy. We were a large group but they seated us quickly. The beer menu is pretty decent, lots of good German beers on draft and in bottles. I was disappointed that they didn't have any Hefeweizen but made do with a dunkel weisbier. I had the jagerschnitzel with warm potato salad and red cabbage. The jagerschnitzel was delicious. The sides were okay but a bit bland. Everyone else had something different and everyone was happy with their entree except for my friend who ordered the Chicken Paprikash, he didn't like it. They had all of one waitress for the entire restaurant though Max the owner did wipe down tables and they had a dishwasher bussing tables occasionally. The poor waitress ran continuously from bar to restaurant, table to table. She did her best to be prompt but just couldn't continually provide quick service. She made sure the food was delivered hot but I never received a drink refill nor did anyone else. It's not a cheap place either. Portions are good but still a bit pricey. I'd consider eating here again, maybe on a week night when there are fewer customers. read more

Telling people to check something out is normal, but the context of how it was said just didn't seem right to me. I went here and there were around 5 guys at the bar. I sat at a table. I was greeted by a lovely woman and she asked if this was my first time having German food. I told her no and would like to have a dinner menu since the lunch menu consisted mostly of sandwiches. I wanted a real meal. So she gave me the dinner menu and I asked her if she had any recommendations. She told me about the Schnitzel so I got it with Red Cabbage and Mashed Potatoes. The order took around 20 minutes which is longer than what you'd expect at any restaurant. However, from my experiences at other German restaurants, they usually take this long because they actually cook to order. They don't have foods lingering under heat lamps or anything of the sort. As I was waiting, there wasn't anything to do because there was no sound on the TV's, my phone died and the music was slowly killing me. I had time to observe my surroundings and the place was clean. Real clean. Except the windows. Some of the windows weren't so clean, but did it take away from my experience? Nope. So I got my food and it was piping hot. Not Nuke hot but I mean fresh hot. I really wish I could have taken a picture but that's okay because I'm planning to stop by here again soon and I'll make sure I take plenty pics! The Schnitzel was delicious and it had some type of Mushroom sauce on top which helped flavor the fried meat. It was salty and savory. Then there was the Red Cabbage which was sweet and sour, which I'm not used to considering other German restaurant's Red Cabbage was just sweet. But it was damn good. Then the flavorful mashed potatoes balanced all the strong flavors and was also delicious. The portions were big. The price for that meal alone is 20 bucks. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I then ordered their Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream on top. My waitress informed me that they get their desserts from Yia Yia Bakery in Baltimore. That's cool! I never had anything from Yia Yia's but I did hear a lot of good things about them. I got my dessert and it was pretty damn good. Anybody can make a decent apple pie but the texture was different with this one. It was slightly chewy which I loved and it paired with the ice cream really well. The last few bites consisted of raisins which I wasn't a huge fan of. I had an unsweetened tea with lemon and my waitress refilled it at least 5 times, each time on time. She was very friendly and made sure I was happy. Overall the service was great and the food, delicious. It was just the damn music that almost fried my brain. If it's authentic German music then I'll have to deal with it, but if it's not then they have gots to change it up LOL. Now I don't know how their service is if the place was busy or if I got a good chef during the time I was there, but I can say that my experience here was great. We were staying at the Red Roof Inn right next door and decided to check out their happy hour on a Friday evening. Stopped in the bartender seemed new and she told us about the beers on tap which are definitely German beers and not what you usually see. We tried the Wheat option and honestly it was warm off the tap so we switched and played it safe with a Jameson and soda. $6.50 a pop, no special during happy hour which is a little odd but they did have beer and wine specials which seemed pretty decent. The prices overall were definitely fair and the staff very friendly. Some people around us were ordering food and it looked and smelled delicious -- would probably try to eat here sometime in the future if I'm nearby. read more

Great German restaurant! I went with a date on a weekday evening. The restaurant was pretty empty. I don't think it has the best location, but it's tucked away in a quiet location. We ordered some German Riesling, which was great. For an hors d'œuvre we got the hot soft pretzel with an assortment of mustards. The mustard selection was great, but I believe the pretzel came frozen. For an entree, I ordered chicken schnitzel with a cheese bier sauce and side of dill potatoes and mashed garlic potatoes. The portions were huge. The entree was absolutely delicious. I spend A LOT of time in Germany (several times per month), and I must say, they didn't a pretty good job with the menu and decor. My only complaint would be that they had a big screen tv showing some politics bs. In the background was some nice German music... The tv took away from the experience a bit. We chose the same sides, German potato salad & red cabbage. We both liked our selection. A plus was the servings were moderate, not overdone as many restaurants like to do. The pluses are the atmosphere, wait staff, food choices & portion size. All very good. I hesitate to bring in too many minuses with a restaurant that has only been open for 2 weeks. But my observations are all of the foods was flavorful, but served warm, not hot. Maybe that's intentional, but I normally expect my food to be hot. Another minor critiques is the rolls. They were fresh but of the delivery truck type. Open the package & serve. Fresh baked rolls raise a meal to a much higher level. Summary is this was a good meal in a new German restaurant. The Bavarian Brauhaus - Sausages, German potato salad & red cabbage. Delish, - German Near Me - Hanover, Maryland

Five stars. Five stars into eternity. Came here with my friends and we ordered a lot of food. Potato pancakes! SO GOOD. They taste like the kind my Bubbie makes. Again tho, this is a German place. Not a Kosher Deli. It was that good. Mazel tov! Red corned beef! It was an open face sandwich with red shredded cabbage. I got it with their fries. Yo. Let me not even play. Stop reading this review, go there right now, and order this. Then come back and message me and go "Yea dude this was amazing you're so right" and then right a review strictly for the red corned beef. The fries were out of this world too. German pretzel with assorted mustard! Let's just stop the pleasantries now because if you're still reading this and not driving there this very moment to try this, you are a terrible person. But don't read and drive because that's bad. Chocolate cake! SOUR KRAUT DONUTS. YOOOOO the cake was good BUT THESE DONUTS ARE LIFE CHANGING I TOTALLY FOUND JESUS IN THEM. The beer is also killer. Bachs and stouts and Oktoberfests and we even did a shot or two. We even had Romulan Ale, which is only reserved for the very best of the best, aka Trekkies. Star Trek fans for you less cultured people. Live long and prosper. Service was great. The older gentleman who served us really knew his German shit, and his apparent love for this place, the food, and people shows. I will absolutely be back, maybe even this week! read more

I am very surprised at the reviews below. The Bavarian Brauhaus is not dull or old. Obviously you never came to this restaurant when it was Gunnings, Gunnings was old and dull for sure. The owners who purchased Gunnings have completely redone and updated the entire venue. Creating more seating areas, bar space and overall, spending money in all the right places--the bathroom and bar. The bar is absolutely gorgeous with the granite they selected and the bathrooms are 5+ star. If you liked Blob's Park, you may actually want to come here when Bavarian Brauhaus has guest performers. It does get crowded and loud so if your someone who complains don't come on one of these nights. I have come here a total of four times now since they opened. Every experience has been great, from the customer service to the food. They are within walking distance of my house and since they have a huge beer list we frequent this spot a lot. read more
