Black Hog has some of the best BBQ around! There's a variety of meat and sauce options and something that everyone will love. I personally love their vinegar based BBQ! The Carolina Chopped is my favorite meat option. I usually go for that with a side of Mac and cheese, because you can't have BBQ without Mac and cheese! They also have a bar that's stocked with a decent beer selection and your usual drink options. Service is fast and friendly at this location. If you can't street park, there's plenty of parking in the back. read more

While in Frederick for 2 weeks on travel I ended up eating here *quite* a few times. The food is just outstanding. It is a bit on the more expensive end, so it may not be the best bargain around. That being said it is worth the price for the food. The rough-cut brisket (Burnt Ends) is some of the best I have ever had. Fantastic bark on the meat, cooked perfectly, and the right amount of sauce. The standard brisket is meh. Not bad, but not worth getting over the other great choices. Dry ribs are very good. Great flavor, not super salty (although they look like they might be at first glance) and more on the lean side than the wet ribs. Wet ribs are where you want to be. These have that flavor you've been looking for. Outstanding. The greens are also worth getting. Basically a bowl of green bacon flavored yumminess disguised as leaves. Cornbread side is average. Coleslaw could use a fair amount of work. Sub-par. It's not gross, but it just lack next to all that amazing meat. The "They don't have the meats, we do" sandwich is also a worthy contender to try out. This thing is great. Amazing flavors jammed between two buns. After eating here about 6 times in two weeks, I have to say the best option in my book is the burnt ends with wet ribs combo. read more

I've been wanting to find a decent bbq place in the area and wanted to give this place a try. Ok, I ordered the pull pork sandwich. They give the BBQ sauce on the side so you can pick which sauce you want, which seems pretty cool. The meat was very tender but had a few pieces of fat in it. The mac & cheese was so bland and dry. Same goes for the cornbread, just dry. Maybe I just got an old piece. A tad bit pricey for what I got. read more

The food was excellent, we had Gumbo, smoked ham, pork, brisket, greens and Mac and cheese. One waitress worked very hard to keep everyone happy but the survive was just a little slow, chalk this up to covid, someone called off sick. Christine was our waitress and she did a great job. read more

I've been to the original Black Hog downtown and thought it was overhyped. Good but not great. But today I was craving bbq and decided to stop by the new branch since it's an exit away from home. Maybe it's only because I was starving or maybe they're eager to impress at the new store but my smoked beef brisket sandwich was phenomenal! 4 big slices of tender meat and a spicy, flavorful sauce- I used the bun to sop up every bit of that sauce. I got sweet potatoes and collard greens for my sides and they were delicious as well. The greens were flecked with ham and hot sauce and the sweet potatoes were cooked and seasoned perfectly. They even had tres leches in the dessert case, which I of course had to pick up. I haven't tried it yet since I'm so stuffed I can barely type but I'm looking forward to it later tonight! read more

I'm a Minnesota transplant through 15 years in the Colorado rocky mountains, have been coming to Frederick since 2013, 14? Anyway - the Black Hog (the original on Market) was the first restaurant I ate at and the BBQ blew me away, the people - the atmosphere - just an all around great experience... that was then, and now - this is now... I moved to Frederick permanently in 2017, and life, work, everything always gets in the way so it was probably when I had out-of-town visitors later '17, maybe early 2018 that I finally had a chance to make it back to one of my favorite Frederick eateries - and sure enough, was not disappointed and my guests were impressed... Again, life gets in the way - I had been living out in Ballinger Creek and in mid 2018 I had an opportunity to buy a home, in Wormans Mill, and it came with the pleasant surprise of having my very own Black Hog in my backyard... The Brisket, the pulled chicken or pork, their wings - really can't make a mistake no matter what you order. I like the fact that I have a few friends stop over and sitting out back on the deck and the urge hits - just call the Hog, give them my order, jump in the car and 20 minutes later we are all enjoying the best BBQ in Frederick. Had very high hopes as this place has gotten some great reviews. Let me start off by saying they should really be pickier with their staff. The cashier was not well trained and not very friendly at all. When we asked if we could have a pulled pork sandwich meal...the answer was simply no. Maybe she could have recommended getting the sandwich and just adding a side. So we ended up getting a 2 meat platter wth two sides and just asked the server for a roll and made our own pulled pork sandwich. Can this place not just add a pork sandwich meal to the list of meal options? Seems simple enough, right? We opted for the Mac and cheese and coleslaw...figured we couldn't go wrong...but it was wrong...all wrong. Coleslaw was chopped to smithereens, watery, salt less, just plain gross. The Mac and cheese was equally bad. The brisket was dry. The only O.K. Food item was the chopped pork. We ate it with a roll and added sauce. We will not be back. Food was worth 4 stars maybe 5 stars, but the server we had (Dominic) cost them a star. Perhaps one of the worst servers I've ever had. The other servers who helped out, were very pleasant and easy to deal with. The Triple Mofu sandwich was outstanding (fries were cold - also cost them a star, but not as cold as Dominic). Arkansas brisket, pulled pork, cole slaw, sweet potatoes, and other food my party had were all very good. We'll be back at some point. However, if we get seated with Dominic, we'll be the rude ones and either ask for a different server or simply walk out. Plenty of other places to eat next door, across the street, or down the block; but I will NOT ever interact with Dominic again. read more

I've passed by a few times and always meant to give it a shot. I'm glad I did. My wife and I stopped in for lunch. I had the rib & 14/ chicken combo and my wife had the brisket plate. We both enjoyed our selections, and each others, very much. My wife doesn't care for BBQ sauces very much at all but loved the Kansas City sauce enough for me to get a bottle to keep at home. All in all a great lunch, great BBQ and they even turned on the local college basketball game for me, Go Terps! I travel quite a bit for work and I've experienced BBQ EVERYWHERE it's known to be good. I've picked up enough tricks and recipes along the way to make BBQ nights at our house something really special. I'm glad to have a local place that will save me the work and travel by providing a variety of regional tastes with great smoke. We will be back! read more

I was hungry and there were a bunch of new restaurants in this area to choose from. I settled on this one. I have never been to the downtown location so I can't compare the two locations. What I can say is that I didn't care for the school cafeteria like atmosphere and having the teenage employees joking around in the background really helped to create that atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, I am all for the youngsters having a job but I get nervous when they work around food. So, I was worried about the taste and quality of my meal. Anyway, I ordered the St Louis Cut Ribs 1/2 rack platter. You can get them dry or wet. I chose wet. Surprisingly, the ribs were delicious. Originally, I chose sweet potatoes and baked beans as my sides but I was told that they were out of sweet potatoes. I substituted it with "Southern" greens. I use quotations because the greens were awful. I am not at all shocked because few restaurants get that right. The beans were okay. The whole experience was just okay. I would give them 3 1/2 stars because they did make more sweet potatoes and brought them out to me at no charge. I just can't go any higher because I was annoyed by all the clutter on the way to the bathroom. There were boxes everywhere. It seems like an accident waiting to happen. read more

Horrible experience. I never yelp but this one is necessary. To be greeted took 5 plus minutes. Drinks besides water took 5-10 minutes. Waited for food for an hour still wasn't ready. Could see our wings (which were an entree) die under the heat lamp. We were told our food was taking so long because well "it was a bigger order" only to be told by management the kitchen never got the order. Which made complete sense because multiple tables which were seated after us got food before us. Manager didn't offer to comp any drinks. Manager insisted we wait for our food that was almost ready 20 minutes ago. Nope. Just nope. I work in the industry. I walk into a place with understanding. Own your mistakes. Treat you customers well. Don't let them leave unhappy. They failed big time. read more

So my family enjoys Black Hog my husband and daughter prefer the ribs. My husband tried the wings and they were just OK! I tried the sliced brisket twice and the first time I was not a fan but on another occasion it was just right the ends were charred how I like it and had that smoky taste! The BBQ sauce options could use an upgrade there is no wow factor. It's definitely a family friendly spot where you can get a drink as well which is a plus. read more

Had both the dry rub and wet ribs with fries and Mac n cheese. There is an intense Smokey flavor that gave me indigestion. I kept having smoke flavored burps. I couldn't enjoy the meat w/o that intense, almost fake flavor. My kids did not like it at all and they LOVE wet bbq ribs. They also tasted the smoke and were turned off. Way too many burned bits. The fries were just ok. The mac n cheese was bland. First and last visit. Just wasn't for us. read more

Out of all the Black Hog locations, this has become our go-to. The food is delicious, as expected. The pulled pork and Arkansas beef is always spot-on. The sides are killer too. It's hard to choose between the macaroni and cheese or the sweet potato fries, but no matter what you decide, you'll leave happy! I'm a bit confused as to why this location doesn't have as high of reviews as the others! We used to frequent the downtown Frederick location, but started coming to this one because it is open on Sundays, is easier to park at, and is roomier. We've also always have had very quick service here as well. What is not to love?! read more

Don't order carryout! Enough is enough, this place cannot get an order right to save their lives. We have been ordering carry out from this location for a long time however they rarely get it right. Apparently the workers cannot read or understand English (i.e. I order Mac & Cheese and get "greens", I order wet ribs and get dry rub, we order sides and get home to find out they forgot to put them in the bag, etc, etc, etc). If they accidentally get your order right, you will be overcharged. We have given this place so many chances but it's apparent there is no hope that they will hire competent staff. We normally go to Black Hog on Market Street and I love the food. Tried out the Black Hog on Shorebird Street yesterday and all the sauces were too sweet, the wings were mediocre, the greens were okay, the brisket was fatty and compared to the food at the Black Hog on Market Street it wasn't that good. We'll never go to that location again but will continue to go to the Market Street location. I do have a positive comment about the Caesar salad and it had the best dressing ever. Let me start this review with saying I have never felt the need in my entire life to write a review for any restaurant, but today that changed. Let's start with the positives, the staff was nice and the ambiance was good. Now for the many negatives. I got the dmv sandwich and it was the worst sandwich I have had in a while, for 17 dollars! The brisket slices were 50% fat and the actual meat was very tough, not a good thing to be in a sandwich. The horse radish was so strong it tasted like I ate a whole thing of wasabi strait and had me physically brace because of the pain I was experiencing. The bun fell apart within two bites. The baked beans lacked flavor and the mac n cheese had no seasoning. Now for the after experience. Two of the people in my family had to rush to the bathroom after 5 minutes of leaving, one of which had only had their fries. What was in that oil??? This place had us exploding the Marshall's next to it, fighting for our lives. Sorry Marshall's staff. With all of that I leave a 1 star review. read more

Really good BBQ. 10 of us showed up and was seated in less than 5 minutes. The food was awesome and we didn't have to send anything back to get fixed. The waitress was doing good but about halfway through the service she disappeared. Maybe a smoke break we didn't know but the drinks stop flowing and once the food was done we rolled out. Yes it quaint & small, but clean. There is no wow factor... If you want WOW then go to DC. Ribs are tasty and the sides are delicious. Beer is available, which is a plus. Great BBQ is regional and this place covers a lot of ground. They have the major sauces: KC, mustard, vinegar and their original sauce. I had the Arkansas brisket sandwich (burnt ends) and it was great. My wife had a sliced brisket sandwich and it was equally good (peppery bark). I stumbled upon this place while in Fredrick and it was a great find. The food is amazing but I love their dedication to local grass fed beef and free range chicken. Their pork is also local and humanely treated too, if I'm not wrong. Their meat selection and quality is delicious. My boyfriend got the beef and I tried their pulled pork - both "naked" which means they are served with cornbread instead of inside a sandwich. The pulled pork didn't need any sauce whatsoever but my order came with warm BBQ sauce that deliciously complimented my pulled pork. I have to say that I most enjoyed the mac and cheese because it never got cold, even though I ate it slowly. It's the perfect side with pulled pork. I would definitely go back to try all their different types of BBQ styles which are perfectly explained on the menu too. Bonus. Til next time Black Hog BBQ! read more

First time here and it was a salty mess. I got a pulled pork sandwich, the BBQ ham, a side of cole slaw, and a side of greens. The ham and greens were inedible. I carried out and had to soak these in 3 changes of tap water to eat them. I don't know if the JV team was on the grill line, if they were f'ing with me, or if management doesn't eat there. How is cole slaw too salty to eat? The pulled pork was decent, but not exactly smoky. The sauce was - yep, too salty, too. This is a correctable mistake, Black Hog. Taste the food before it goes out. There is a saying that good barbecue doesn't need barbecue sauce. I'd say good food doesn't need salt. The beer I got waiting for carry out was tasty and the bartender was a great host (2/16/21). I sought you out because you're a local bbq chain but you've got to pick it up. read more

Overcooked! Overpriced! Overrated! This was my second visit to this location and I should have learned my lesson last time! I ordered a brisket plate with potato salad. The brisket should have been taken off the heat three days ago! You could have resoled shoes with it. The potato salad was ok, but likely Sysco. The fountain drink was $2.40. Everything on the menu is absurdly overpriced for what they are serving. You'd be better off bypassing Black Hogg and heading to Memphis for the real thing. Oh, and the sauces... One would think they'd take time to get them right. Just plan gross. Two strikes and I'll not give them a chance for three! And besides I'd rather make the car payment to the bank than to a BBQ joint. At least I'll come out ahead! read more

Went here based on input from our 13 year old granddaughter that it was "good". I'll revise that review to it's "OK". I would agree the ordering process leaves a lot to be desired. The first person you come to takes your order. Not sure what he does with the info, because as you proceed down the cafeteria style line, everyone asks for your order again. Delivery of the orders it totally uncoordinated, I'd estimate at least 5 minutes standing in line waiting, watching items placed piece-meal on trays. Each time an item was delivered, there were more questions about what was ordered. Fortunately, they seem to have heeded the advice of an earlier reviewer who complained about the long wait for orders that had to be cooked. Our GD's cheeseburger was delivered to our table, or the wait would have been even longer. Menu is not clear - ordered 1 meat dinner, with beans/rice side. Apparently the meal includes a tiny bit of coleslaw as a side, but I either missed it on the wall-mounted menu, or it wasn't stated. The online menu is printed in such a way that the coleslaw only appears to be included with the Carolina Chopped Pork BBQ dinner. Prices seemed a bit high for the size of the serving - food was "OK". Our GD gave the cheeseburger a "good".... where have I seen that before? Mrs. I liked the 8 wings. I had the Arkansas Beef, and I'll rate it "somewhat edible". The beef was cut in large cubes, and they were tough/chewy. The "Arkansas" sauce was in identity crisis, being sweet and sour and hot, but in any case best described as "cloying". I will admit I have no idea what Arkansas Beef is supposed to taste like. Add a Blue Moon 12oz bottle at $5.25 (+ MD liquor tax) for each adult, and this became a very expensive meal, given the lack of organization, so-so quality and quantity, and excessive cost, particularly for the "cafeteria" atmosphere. read more

This was our first trip to this new location. I ordered a brisket sandwich and some greens. My wife and son ordered hamburgers. I get that if you're not going to order meat that has been previously prepared, it's going to take a few minutes until it's ready. But it got really awkward! You stand there in line like it's a cafeteria. My sandwich was ready in seconds. The burgers took 5-10 minutes. They should have offered to let us pay for our food, go sit down, and then let us know when the food was ready. By the time the burgers were ready, my food was cold. Though cold, my brisket sandwich was tender and tasty. The burgers, unfortunately, tasted like standard food service burgers. If you give Black Hog a shot, steer clear of the burgers. Stick with what they are good at. read more

I have eaten at the downtown site and hoped more of the same from here but....I was disappointed in the menu. Too pricey for a 2 meat selection... only 3 ribs and brisket for $16? Not at all up to the standards set by so many other places in and around Frederick. If given the choice I won't be back. I was compelled to write my first yelp review today after my wife and I ate at the newly opened black hog location for lunch today. I haven't eaten at any of the other black hogs in the Frederick area, so I don't know if this place, being new, is just coming up to speed or the other locations are just overrated at 4 stars. I ordered the 2-meat platter with Carolina pulled pork and sausage. You get a piece of cornbread and 1 side with that, so I got the sweet potatoes. My wife ordered the 1-meat platter with regular pulled pork and cole slaw. The first thing we noticed was that even though my 2 meat platter cost $2 more, my pulled pork portion was noticeably smaller than my wife's, so I was not getting much extra meat for the money. Total bill for the two of us was over $30. Then as we sat down my wife found a lady bug in her cole slaw. She took it back and they gave her another side but they were not apologetic. Fortunately at least it looked like they removed the cole slaw that was on the line. Then we went to try the barbecue sauces, which were all pretty watery. Flavor of the sauces was ok, but nothing to write home about. My wife's pulled pork portion was nearly 25% far that hadn't been smoked enough and was in edible unless you really go for that sort of thing. Finally as I got down to the bottom of my sweet potatoes we noticed how much oil was sitting in the bottom of the cup. The one side was not enough either, it really should come with two sides. Overall I've been to so much better BBQ places for similar $, that I would not come back here. read more

While it's been years since I've eaten at the "downtown" Market street location, I have eaten at their other Frederick location many times. In the one instance I observed an employee concern, not only did the Josh, one of the facility managers, immediately address the issue, he also followed up with me as well. That concern is a year in the rear view mirror, and I have never since had a concern. Josh is a great manager. I believe he has a great staff. I always enjoy sitting outside on their patio and oh yeah....I definitely enjoy the beef brisket and BBQ pork fries (my wife's favorite). Al V. read more
