Came here for my fiancé and groomsmen to choose their attire for our upcoming May wedding. I was very pleased at how attentive the employees were. They had numerous employees there so each groomsmen had their own personal "appointment". It gave them each the opportunity to have that undivided attention they needed to make such a big purchase. The employee helped them with each step in choosing every aspect of their suit/tuxedo. They were able to walk around the studio and see and touch what the materials for each item would look/feel like. This review might not be fair to Black Lapel - I could only gave them 5 stars for their 10 star service. I've worked with Brianne and she was just awesome from the start to the end. The whole experience was great. Less than a 4 weeks I've received my suit, made a few alteration (free and fast) and boom! I am loving my charcoal grey suit and will be back for navy soon.Trust me this is the best quality you can get for your bucks. You can either buy a costume made suit from other guys and it will cost your an arm and leg. Or you can go to Black Lapel- It will cost you $500. I ordered the royal blue shawl-collared tuxedo and I was not disappointed. Living in Montreal, there are plenty of custom tailors and formal wear shops. I did much shopping and got quotes. Although supporting my local economy is important to me, I have to take into consideration what I can afford and Black Lapel offers an excellent product for $500 less than local tailors. I got emailed quickly by the staff whenever the measurements seemed off and when I tried it on, it was perfect. Seriously. Recently got a Tux from Black Lapel. It has been frustrating. 1) The tuxedo's front button tore off my suit within 1 hour of wearing it, and was torn without any kind of major movement on my part. I had not even made it to the dance floor of the wedding I was at. I am now concerned about the quality of the entire garment as this was quite shocking. 2) When I picked up the Tuxedo, they forgot to put my tuxedo shirt in the garment bag, so I had to make a return trip to pick it up again. 3) The custom shirts aren't even custom, mine has shirt darts instead of tailored fabric. Stay away from this place. It looks nice but the quality is cheap. read more

Overall a decent experience, with room to improve. I went to their showroom to get measured and my first suit came back with a nasty collar gap. I went back to their showroom to complain and they made a remake for me. The remake is decent - the collar gap is pretty much gone and although I noticed a few new problems (and considered sending it back for a refund), overall it is acceptable for a first custom suit from them. Their customer service does seem to try hard and they are polite and eager to please. Also, I am a bit of a neurotic customer because I am very precise about fit and they dealt with that very carefully. I didn't measure myself but took the time to go into their showroom for a professional measurement, so I was disappointed that the first result was so far off (although I understand that a remake is often necessary with MTM, it really shouldn't be if you are being professionally measured). Also when I went to the showroom the second time, I left my trousers with them to send back to me along with the remake and they charged postage to my credit card for the trousers- which I had no idea they would do. It was weird that they did not charge postage for the remade jacket that I guess came from China, but only for the trousers. Nobody told me that would happen, otherwise I would not have left the trousers. Obviously I did not like that at all, but I will not push back too hard over 11.80. Just be careful that to not do what I did. Before I order my next suit I am going to back into the showroom and see what tweaks need to be done to get a better result. read more

I came into this with very high hopes and even opted to go to NYC to get measured so that there wouldn't be any mistakes (I'm from LA). However, when my suit came out the first time, it was a horrible fit all around. After sending photos to them, they tried to convince me that I was wrong, but the suit just felt wrong. Then, after tailoring it twice (which I still haven't been reimbursed for) it still looks horrible. I've reached out for a refund twice now and haven't heard back. I had an awesome experience with Black Lapel this summer after shopping for a suit for my wedding. I went into the NYC Headquarter for all of my fittings and wound up ordering a Marine Blue Linen Blend. I worked with Val (who was fantastic) and the suit was ready for the first fitting ahead of schedule. I have some slightly unusual proportions (including one shoulder that slopes more than the other), and they were able to easily accommodate. Minor alternations were needed after that fitting, but 1-2 weeks later the suit was ready for pick-up. The suit looks great, fits great, the material feels extremely high quality, and I got tons of compliments. The whole process really couldn't have been easier and I'll definitely be returning for any suit needs in the future. My first time going to a MTM company, I had options between Black Lapel, Indochino and Enzo.I am soo glad that I choose Balck Lapel .First time when I came for my appointment ,I was met by Kevin, me made special arrangements for me ,he used the the material from the savory line (the indigo blue tuxedo) to make it into a suit .That was awesome because I liked the color of that tuxedo.Kevin was professional ,we took the measurments and everything went smooth .For my follow up fitting they just had to shave a bit from the waist but that was no problem since it was normal ,and that was done by J.G ,since Kevin was not there .J.G was awesome,really knowledgeable.He was concerned about the fit of my suit but after the alteration was done ,it was no problem at all ,pants fit me as a glove .After that we spoke a bit about the other linen option foe my summer wear .He assured me that if I had a problem with the suit ,dont hesitate to co tact him.Sorry for the lengthy review.Black Lapel was awesome ,and for my future purchases, I will use then again for sure .I RECOMMEND !You won't regret it . read more

This is for all us guys who are not slim-trim-athletic-average. I have a high normal BMI and am tall with lots of curves. I figured M2M was for me. So I went there in person, and as a guy of some size they convinced me that "slim" fit would work. They measured me in person. Went back, nothing fit to the point of looking like drapes. They altered, I went back and it was just as bad. They remade the jacket, went back and still looked like cheap drapes hiding an open window. Not saying the competition would be better, but consider making sure you have an out if the first set of alterations doesn't work. read more

As a first time customer of Black Lapel, I am very satisfied with the results of my MTM pants. Overall, this was my 2nd pair of MTM pants as I have ordered from another company in the past. That company actually did quite a good job as well but getting into the custom clothes market more and more, I wanted to see another company's results to get a more in-depth perspective on what the market has to offer. I have a slim body type with average proportions so for me personally, it is not so much the measurements that require MTM treatment but my preferences as far as customization options go. What I am looking to achieve are pants that actually sit on the natural waist and leave a lot of room in the crotch area, tapering to a slimmer silhouette as they reach the knee and leg opening. If you add some of my peculiar ideas concerning the waistband it becomes virtually impossible to find something like that off the rack. The pants I ordered feature a very classic cut that works well with pleats. In Black Lapel's terms, it is the "Standard Fit", the most traditional fit type they offer. In my case, I was asking to get double pleats that face towards the fly (forward facing or inverse - not inverted - pleats). Furthermore, I wanted the waistband to look as clean as possible so I tried to get a hook and eye closure that is concealed by the actual cloth. To adjust the width of the waist, I opted for side tabs with buttons, no belt loops, and suspender (braces) buttons on the inside. Many of these options are actually available through the web shop interface on blacklapel.com while for others, you can always ask individually via email. Not being a native speaker myself I used email to describe my individual ideas to a concierge who was extremely helpful and understanding. I felt I was given enough time to make up my mind on the forward facing pleats option and that my discretion as a customer was always considered priority. Never did I feel lured into a quick deal. I think that anyone who really knows what options they want cannot go wrong with Black Lapel. They will achieve the look that you want. The concierge will assist you throughout the entire order. When I was assured that my individual options were feasible I submitted my order along with my measurements. These measurements are based on detailed instructions that leave virtually no room for error. There was, however, an inconsistency in the measurements that I submitted as far as the cut around the crotch area goes. It was a mistake on my part that was immediately spotted by Black Lapel. I was kindly asked to re-check my measurements and judging by the perfect results that I ultimately received, it was a blessing that I was given the chance to measure for a 2nd time. The look that I did want to accomplish was perfectly present on final product, e.g. the pants sitting high on the waist and the waistband actually covering the belly button. On the final product, the inside of the waistband is lined with a special gripping texture that keeps the shirt nice and snug. The buttons make a professional and natural looking impression. The pure wool fabric of the pants is of good weight and quality. The colors look as depicted on blacklapel.com if you use a quality computer and monitor setup. I chose the solid Royal blue color which is supposed to be just a tiny bit vibrant. I consider it to be a little more daring than French navy and less formal than true navy so that makes it perfect for that pair of odd pants that you want to wear to leave a statement. The order process is outstanding in that shipping and taxes are indeed included. For an international customer, that is simply outstanding and adds a lot of value to the purchase. The price was USD 199.00. I highly recommend Black Lapel and look forward to ordering that next pair of pants in the near future, which might be as soon as I get the chance to do so. Black Lapel is the gold standard, simple and plain. With an athletic frame, I have a body shape that I've found very difficult to properly fit. If the jacket fits in the shoulders, its massive through the midsection, and if it fits in the midsection, I feel like I'm going to rip through the shoulders. After getting a suit from Black Lapel, its safe to say I'll never be able to go back to off the rack. The process is the same as everyone else has said: make an appointment, get measured, choose your suit, and in a month, do any minor alterations necessary. However, leaving it at that would be a disservice to the process. Black Lapel lets you customize everything, from the obvious (lapel type, vents, pleats, cuffs, etc) to the finer details (accent stitching, monogramming, pick stitching, and both jacket and pant pocket styles). I decided on the Charcoal Blue suit, which is a nuanced color that I fell in love. When my suit came in, Derek checked to make sure that everything was absolutely perfect. After some very slight changes (which he adjusted accordingly in my online measurements) the suit fit me like no suit ever has before. Frankly, I look for reasons to wear it as much as possible, as it has elicited compliments from friends and coworkers and approving looks on the Subway. The entire process was great - I highly enjoyed it and came away extremely impressed with the product. So much so, that I just received my second suit, which fits perfectly right away. Appointment 1: My experience took longer than I would have liked. The first fitting was good and my questions were answered. I felt like they helped me get the style that was right for what I wanted. Appointment 2: 4 Weeks later I picked up my suit and tried it on. The employee that fitted me said things looked good size-wise. Although I knew I would have to wear it out once to see for sure. Appointment 3: When I wore it out the first time, I realize that some adjustment would have to be made. As it turns out the jacket was simply too tapered for my very slender waist. I assume my real measurements didn't translate well into a jacket that was actually that thin. So we agreed to widen the middle of the jacket.So I went back and had my measurements taken again by another friendly employee. He noted what parts of the suit needed tailoring. Appointment 4: The adjustments (ALL FREE by the way) took about 9 days. However, when the previous employee and I saw the results NEITHER of us were happy. I still had the hourglass look that I did not want. He told me that they would RECUT the suit from scratch (FREE again, as they seem to have a policy that they will do what they have to to make it right) Appointment 5: The new cut was wider in the middle and I think it's as good as it can get. For an unexplained reason the one sleeve needed .25 inches let out. So I will be picking up the final product soon. Overall it took much longer than I expected. HOWEVER, no additional payments were needed to get the suit right. I assume that this can't be the norm for the company because they would go out of business if every customer needed so much time and adjustments. I'm willing to accept that it can take some time to get sizing perfect. The company benefits from staff that is friendly. The truth is that it will be easy now to get a good fit on my next suit. read more
