Totally hot. Alexander West shirts are custom made, like woah. You set up an appointment with this guy Alex, and he measures your stuff out. You look at a bunch of fabric swatches, and he can help you find stuff that would look good on you. Then he orders a sample shirt for you to try on (you can even have him look at the fit). Once you like the fit, you can get all the shirts you want. The shirts are classy, man! As a gentleman of taller but thinner stature, I often have trouble finding shirts that fit my delicate frame. I've gotten many compliments on the ones I got from him. This is an affordable option for gents who don't always find stuff on the rack, and who don't have a strong relationship with a tailor. The website makes me laugh a little, because Alex uses the royal "we"--I'm pretty sure he's the only person running this business. As such, the shirts may take a while (mine came after 10 weeks). But they're custom made, and included in that time is trying out the sample. The best way to see him is to go to the website and make an appointment. I very rarely review retail stores because most people know what they're getting into when buying a Birkin or some Tributes. Great Service is nice but you're not in there for someone to kiss your a$$, but to get some item you've been coveting. But Alexander West is different. It's bespoke, so half of the value is the experience. This is a custom made shirt. A perfect gift for a man in your life. Something special just for him. While the rest of the fashion world falls for fast fashion or ready to wear because it's really financial impossible for 99% of the world to have bespoke (myself included), Alex West gives it's customers a taste of old school Savile Row: Efficient & knowledgeable without pretension. 5 stars for service. Now the product: one name best describes it all- Thomas Mason fabrics. The very same company that Hermes uses for it's custom shirts for men but instead of the $700 price tag, AW provides the very same incredible wovens for about $150. Then there's the thick mother-of-pearl buttons and well constructed collars that keep their shape even after washing which show quality. AW has a store in Therapie in the UWS now which allows for easier access for those uptown. Also...they're coming out with a women's line soon?? Let's all hope so! Love these shirts! They fit so well and the fabric is high quality. I have bought both work and casual shirts and keep on going back. My only issue is that I want more. Alexander West has a lot of fabric and design options, and they will work with you to ensure you find what you want. I am tall and thin, so stock shirts never fit me well; but Alexander West has fine-tuned all of my measurements and dimensions perfectly. They took the time to measure me properly and correctly. All of your measurements will be saved on Alexander West's website portal, which you can access, so once you have been fitted, you can easily order more in person or online. The customer service is responsive. I get an email back shortly after sending in regards to an appointment or order. I have researched and met with many custom shirt providers, and Alexander West is the best. I receive numerous compliments every time I wear one of Alexander West's shirts. They are worth the money. I love my men in an Alexander West shirt. So if it's serious I love dressing my man in shirt fitted perfectly for him. The only problem is finding a guy I'm serious about. But it doesn't mean I can't buy a shirt for my brother and my best friend. So this is how it works. You call and make an appointment. At your appointment make sure to wear the thinnest shirt possible so they can measure you properly. Pick your design style and swatches. Wait, wait, and wait some more and soon through the mail you have the perfect shirt for you. Your first shirt is never always that perfect. My best friend had to send it back one or two times because he was extremely picky how the shirt laid on him. Soon after you would have the perfect fit and you can never gain or lose weight. But your get to enjoy all the wonderful compliments how the shirt looks perfect on you. read more

I love these custom-tailored shirts, and highly recommend AW if you find off-the-rack just isn't working for you. At about $145 a shirt (not including tax and shipping), I think these shirts are a great deal. Why not spend a little more to get something you really like and will wear until it falls off your back? Basically, as I think others have described, you make an appointment for a fitting and to choose whichever shirts you want. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and they have numerous fabric and pattern options, not to mention choices around cut, cuffs, collar, etc. That said, the experience is not overwhelming and the staff will point you in the right direction. Once you've placed your order it takes about 4-6 weeks to get your shirt; if your shirt does not fit to your liking they will remake or alter it free of charge. There is no minimum order which is nice; they keep all of your measurements on file so you can easily order online in the future. One tip is to visit the actual showroom for your fitting and to choose your shirt. They have many more fabric swatches at the showroom than are shown online, and they also have some sample shirts to give you some ideas. The staff can also point you in the right direction. The only drawback is that delivery/completion can be slow and they are a small company. On one order, there were some issues, and it took nearly two months to get my shirt. But the customer service was very helpful, prompt, and sincere. They gave me a $15 coupon to apologize for the mistake,and I got my most recent order in just 4 weeks. read more

I am in complete agreement with the majority of the positive reviews. The two whiners aside folks, Alex West and his staff are top notch professionals. I to have had experience with custom tailored shirts in the past and while it was an ok experience, my overall experience with AW has been nothing but exceptional. There was an issue with one of my shirts, Alex took care of it period, no questions asked. Was there a long lead time, yes, do mistakes happen, yes they in fact do. But never will you find someone more down to earth and that loves what they do as much as Alex. I got three shirts and I'll be back for more. If you get squeamish about long lead times or hiccups then I suggest you come back to planet earth, because last time I checked no one is perfect. Even you folks that are clearly exempt from being human can and have screwed up in the past, so don't besmirch other peoples reputations for trying to run an otherwise legitimate business with awesome staff and excellent customer service to boot! read more

Great shirts, great fit. Better than anything you'd buy off the rack. Customer service is prompt and the location for fitting is decent. My sample shirt fit perfectly and didn't need any adjustments. Cons: Long wait and two of the fabrics were out of stock by the time the order was to be made. They had alternate fabrics chosen from when they measured me but for some reason they didn't use them. So it was another 3-4 week wait for those shirts where the fabric was out of stock. Will definately be ordering more shirts in the future though. read more

Listen, the shirts are obviously great quality, thats not the problem here. My issue was on the customer service/shipping side. My shirts took 5 MONTHS to receive (seriously). I wouldn't have minded if they had warned me that this was going to happen, but they didn't say boo. Every 3-4 weeks I would have to call and ask them what was going on. They seem to not have any sort of tracking system. Plus..Once they came, 3 of them were not as ordered. When I emailed explaining they were incorrect..I never received a reply. I'm still waiting. Seems like other people on YELP had a positive experience with them, and its possible that my experience was an anomaly. Either way..mine was pretty frustrating. read more

Alexander west is great service for those guys with non conforming measurements. The price point is pretty good, the service is outstanding, and the shirts are awesome. But be prepared to wait (and wait). I had my initial measurements and fabric selections taken mid november, waited 5 weeks for initial shirt, 3 weeks worth or wear to make sure the fit is still good after washings, another 5 weeks for the shirt to come back after adjustments, 2 weeks of wear and washings and then another 5 for the rest of the shirts. All in, its mid april and I finally got all my shirts. read more

I was first introduced to Alexander West thru a Gilt City event about 9 months ago and the experience has been amazing. I started with just 2 shirts to see how the fit and quality compared to other custom tailors. I never felt pressured or like I was getting "pitched" to buy. Since the original 2, I have now purchased 9 work shirts and 6 casual shirts (on the way to replacing most casual shirts with AW fabrics). With most tailors, the collar and cuff quality is very poor. However, AW shirts come out strong as ever. I machine wash and hang dry. It takes 4-6 weeks to get the shirts back but well worth the wait. I've received a confirmation every step of the way from the staff and couldn't be happier with the company. I'll continue to order from Alexander West. read more

I just received my Alexander West shirt in the mail yesterday. After years of wearing those bulky Brooks Brothers shirts that resembled more of a pirate outfit than a dress shirt (to quote GQ), I have become obsessed with getting my dress shirts adjusted to properly fit me by a tailor here in Central Florida, especially after reading an article ("Get Fitted: A Dress Shirt Manifesto") in GQ last year. But I have always wanted to find a place to purchase a shirt without having to first wash it (for shrinkage) and then take it to the tailor to be adjusted to get the perfect fit. Enter Alexander West -- with their option to mail in my best fitting shirt since I live in Florida. (They will copy your shirt, to its exact measurements, so if you have a shirt that you have tailored to fit you perfectly, then you should send it in to AW). The result: The shirt that I received is perfect -- and I'm sure it will look even better once it is washed. Additionally, the customer service is superb. They are very responsive to a customer's needs and desires. Highly recommended, especially if you have a hard time finding shirts that fit you properly and are super-picky about the fit as I am. The only drawback is that it takes a few weeks to get your shirt, but the wait is well worth it, not to mention that some of the top off-the-rack dress shirts cost more than a custom shirt by AW. read more

Definitely note that you should not be the impatient type. Main reason that I wasn't completely satisfied was because it took over 2 month to receive my shirt. I wasn't in a rush to get it so I didn't care but it did start to get a little annoying towards the end. Their customer support apologized and gave me $35 credit for a future purchase so I'm glad they have good business sense. This was my first time buying a custom shirt and I have to say that I enjoyed every bit of it (minus the wait). Stylists were very professional and informative and the selection of fabrics was extensive (much more than what's offered online). I purchased a giltcity coupon originally but I will definitely be back to order another shirt. Once my shirt arrived I loved it but after a week or two I started having second thoughts on the length of the shirt and went in to make adjustments. A new stylist at a new location, but professional and helpful nonetheless. The shipping for my altered shirt was much quicker and only took about a week or two and I have to say that every time I put on my shirt I still get a little bit excited. Long story short: If you're new to custom shirts I highly recommend this place as long as you're not in a hurry to get the shirt asap. read more

Had a great shirt made here for a wedding and used it again and again for other formal events. Mine was a simple white button down, nice silken material. AW did a great job on taking measurements and made sure the shirt fit properly. It's not every day that a guy gets a compliment on his basic white shirt, but I did. I also have to say that I am very picky about fit, especially around the collar, and my AW shirt fit the bill for someone with really high standards. What I also liked about AW is that for the cost of a designer shirt that doesn't fit well, and makes me look dumpy, I get one that is custom made to enhance my silhouette and makes me look thinner. Really, it just makes sense to go the AW route for shirts. Once the measurements are taken you can order a vast array of colors and styles that you know will all fit perfectly, and you don't have to shop around town to amass your collection. Worst custom shirt I have ever owned. Fell apart after a handful of use. Pure shoddy workmanship. In all my years of owning hand-tailored garments, never have I come across such poor quality for outrageous prices as I have with Alexander West, including my travels through Thailand and Vietnam. I have many years of bespoke clothes from fine tailors the world over. This is a cheap direct from Hong Kong imitation that would not even make Ascot Chang proud. I've had a wonderful experience at Alexander West to date. I used to buy off the rack shirts and then have them tailored until they fit ok (I say ok because they were still not great), but I received a gift card for Alexander West and will never go back to off the rack. I have pretty tough dimensions to get in a shirt, and am pretty particular about how I want my shirts to look (baggy vs fitted vs skin tight, etc), but Alex was very receptive and helpful in getting me just the fit that I want. After an initial first shirt which we tweaked through a round of alterations (at no additional cost) to get all the details just right, we got the perfect fit. I actually have two sets of dimensions on file with Alex, one for a work shirt (meant to be tucked in and a little more conservative) and a casual shirt (meant to be worn untucked with jeans and a little more trendy). Whenever I need more I just come in, pick out some new fabrics, and the shirts show up a few weeks later, ready to go. As an aside, I have been very impressed with the variety and ability to tweak little details of the shirts which I had no idea could be changed. At my first fitting I mentioned that my neck used to be irritated by my shirt collars when I wore ties, so Alex adjusted the collar stiffness and helped me choose a fabric that would eliminate that problem. On my casual shirts, we adjusted the hip rise (that little notch on the side of the shirts that is elevated from the front and back) until it was exactly the look I was looking for. The list of customizable options goes on and on (# of buttons on cuffs, location and # of vents on the back of the shirt, length of collar point, etc). Bottom line, I would highly recommend Alexander West. At the end of the day if you are going to get a $100 off the rack shirt and pay $30 to $40 to tailor it and get an ok fit, you are better off paying $150 for a shirt that will fit perfectly and which you can customize to be just the way you want. read more

This goes down as the single worst retail experience. I am not new to the world of custom shirts, but I had seen them at John Allan's and thought I would give them a shot due to competitive pricing. What a waste! What I maybe saved in money, I lost in a headache of an experience. Making an appointment was the easy part (maybe this should have been a sign of what was to come), the remainder of the experience was absolutely horrible. The stylist took measurements but lacked the attention to detail and expertise of other tailors and does not even take full shoulder measurements. I paid and I left, wary but hopeful. My shirt did not arrive in time, customer service lacks the ability of using common sense and speaking proper English, the quality was terrible, and overall this shirt was a waste of time and money. They do offer alterations, but what is the point?? I will not make the mistake of deviating from my retail norms, especially not with this shoddy place. For those of you looking to make a change in tailors, save yourself the time and headache and do not try this place. read more
