I ordered the Traveler suit in Grey and two Fine Broadcloth Dress Shirts along with couple ties. When the suit first arrived I could tell before putting it on that it would not fit. The pants were huge and jacket was also off. Honestly looking back now I should have just returned the order immediately, however that's not what I did. I took the suit to the tailor where they determined the jacket would need brought in around the waist and the buttons would need to be moved and also the neck would need to be brought down to fix the bunching up around the lapel in the back. The pants pants required being brought in around the waist, the crotch and width of the leg. All in it cost over $220 at the tailor and honestly I'm still not thrilled with the suit and especially not for over $1000 I have into it at this point. I received the order on Friday December 2nd and had it in to the tailor the following week. After spending a few weeks getting fixed I was finally able to take it home on Monday December 23rd. With the holidays taking up the next week it wasn't until Thursday January 2nd that was actually able to wear the new suit and shirt to the office and it was at this time I realized that the shirts were also too small and quality of the fine broadcloth is also just not good enough for $169. I sent an email that weekend (Sunday January 5th) requesting directions to send the shirts back for a refund. I received a reply the following day that I would not be given a refund as I was now outside of 30 days since receiving the order. This whole experience has been terrible. Save your money and go to an actual custom tailor and get something that actually fits. I'm over $1500 in for a suit that I don't love and two shirts that don't fit. Definitely have some buyer's remorse. Decided to come here because my boyfriend has a great looking suit from BL. I went by myself which was my first mistake. I thought that the stylist was going to offer some suggestions for my body type and complexion. Really he didn't offer a ton. Didn't make any suggestions, just asked which suit I wanted. Never asked what I use my suit for. All measurements were taken without any discussion regarding fit for my body, but I trusted the method. When the suit came in he assured me that the suit fits in all the right places, but what do I know? In the end I feel like I have a very boxy suit for my long narrow body. I don't love the color on me, but I guess that's my fault for coming alone and not trying more on. While the Jcrew suit I have is way too slim fitted I definitely feel more confident in it and had a better experience with their stylist. I'll be using this BL suit for funerals and more conservative events. read more

I was looking to try M2M suits and was comparing Indochino and Black Lapel. Indochino does not allow returns for tailored suits. Black Lapel has a generous 30-day window (even for tailored clothing). This was a huge difference so I gave Black Lapel a try and I'm happy I did. Molly is the best customer service rep I've ever had. She knew what she was doing, was very personable, and accurate with my measurements. I wear Levi jeans, Adidas sneakers, a simple button down with a baseball cap. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to clothing. Even though I make ~$250k/year and am pretty liberal with my spending, some customer service reps at high end stores just ignore me or rush me along. Molly treated me like I was their most important customer. The reps here don't work off commissions so there was never any pressure to buy something more expensive than what I intended to purchase. I bought a simple navy suit which looked much better in person than what I saw on the website. Very happy and will definitely be back. Cons: (1) I think Black Lapel's website and photos aren't great compared to websites like Suit Supply - they should really zoom in on the fabric in the same way Suit Supply does. The navy suit on the website seemed darker to me than what I saw in person. I almost did not buy my suit here because I didn't think they had the navy color I was looking for. (2) They really need to increase the number of fabric colors they have. I want to buy a simple solid-colored gray suit (no cross hatches or herringbone styles) but I only saw one suit which wasn't the right tone I was looking for. Otherwise, definitely give them a shot. With a 30 day return policy, competitively priced $500 suits, and customer reps like Molly, you have no reason not to. read more

Very attentive and friendly staff and the measurement process is pretty extensive which I was impressed by. No other place I have been to has as many measurements as Black Lapel. The quality of the suit and shirt that I bought was also on point with the prices reasonable as well in comparison to some of the other spots. Others should know that you need to be careful and aware of their policy. I picked up my suit and brought it home as I live around the block so I didn't feel the need to try it on there. I had to travel out of town for work and didn't return until almost a week later. I finally got around to trying it on and the knee down was a little to tight. I was later told the shirt I ordered was ready and went into pick it up and asked about getting the pants taken out and was told I only had 7 days to let them know that. Maybe that is in the fine print so thats on me if so and also on me for not trying it on right there but the other place nearby that I ordered a suit from has a 30 day window to come back for adjustments and made it a point to tell me their policy when I was buying it. Not a big fan of spending that money and now having to go to a tailor to pay for the alteration as the point of custom isn't to have to do that. So all in all Black Lapel is solid but make sure you try it on right away. Hard to see myself as a returning client just on this aspect even though everything else was very good. read more

I went to the NY showroom for a fitting with Brianne. She was great, and had some wonderful ideas for customizing my navy suit. I was slightly less than thrilled with the suit when it arrived, but could live with it. However, Brianne insisted that they remake the jacket to make sure it was exactly right. It is great working with someone who is pickier than I am about the way my suits fit. Now that my measurements are dialed in, I will almost certainly be ordering more suits in the future. read more

Very disappointed with the Black Lapel. I did a bunch of research and had read great reviews but unfortunately, my experience to date has been very poor. I bought two suits in December before Christmas. It unfortunately was near impossible to schedule an appointment. When I finally got one, I was still pretty excited. However, when I got there, the experience turned sour. I was rushed through the fitting. The gentleman fitting me brushed off all my questions which was very frustrating given that I chose Black Lapel because of the "customization" they advertise. I came with a friend who asked questions; however, she was completely ignored. I just got my first of the two suits almost 8 weeks after I made my order. While I expected as much given the holiday, I did not expect it too be a terrible a fit. I got mine today, and it looks a) very cheap and b) is very off. Not only that, they ignored the requests I had made. What makes it worse is that I won't get another appointment for 2 weeks and even then, I'll still have to wait 4 weeks for them to redo it. read more

I don't have a Yelp account so I'm using my fiancée since I really wanted to show my gratitude toward black lapel. I happened to be in nyc for training so I went in in person and had my measurements taken. It was a pleasure working with Chris, he has great style and really put me in a suit that was my style but also added some much appreciated flare. He helped me pick out a suit that fit my style but also added some touches that I never would have thought I would love. An example. I wanted a blue suit but he had me look at this orange for the inner lining that just worked for my taste. I would describe my style is pretty modern but not too overboard in the trendiness. He was able tow all the fine line of being modern and trendy but not taking it too far. All in all I would highly recommend the company. In the end the suit needed some slight tweaks but I took it to my tailor, had the minor changes fixed, black lapel refunded me the cost and also updated my profile. When my friend told me about his made-to-measure, quality suit for half a grand, I almost didn't believe him until I went through the Black Lapel suit experience. Frank made sure that all of my concerns and questions were addressed in my first measurement/consultation. From there, we chose colors, fabrics, customizations, and other small details. He entertained my crazy questions and indecisiveness and was very patient and understanding throughout the process. 4 weeks later, the suit arrived in the mail. It was quite wrinkled but one day of hanging in the bathroom getting steamed up by the shower was all it took to take them out. At my fitting, Frank even asked if I had it pressed. Nope, just a hot shower! I actually went over all the small alterations I wanted to have done and had them in my head before I went to my suit fitting with Frank. Not giving away what I wanted done, I let him see the suit on me and make his comments. A shady/half-ass place would have said everything looked perfect so they wouldn't have to spend the extra time and money making alterations. However, Black Lapel passed the test when Frank made a list of alterations/comments that exactly mirrored my own, without me having to say it. This alone told me they valued making a quality product and having a satisfied customer over the short-term gain of selling suits as quickly and cheaply as possible and to hell with the customers. One week later, I picked up my altered suit and it fit like a glove. The suit looks like a $1,000+ suit and I feel like one of those models on the website when I'm wearing it (minus 5 inches of height). Amazing quality, price, and customer service. My measurements are also saved on my account on the website so I have already ordered another suit. They are very busy, so may take 1-2 weeks to get a reservation for measurements or fitting, but it's worth the wait. Keep up the good work guys! read more

Awesome experience! I went with Black Lapel for a custom after a lot of research on the internet, and seeing the good reviews that had here and in other places on the web. I had an in person consultation and was able to get measured by them and look at the fabrics in person. I didn't fully trust myself to do the measurements and figured I'd have more peace of mind if I had them take them. After going through the fabrics, I actually went with a different fabric (Glen Grey Plaid) than I had originally intended. After all of this, I ordered my suit and waited... My suit took on the longer end of their estimate, but still within the timeframe they predicted. I was anxious to see the fit of the suit (I opted for the slim fit) and when I received it, I was incredibly happy at the quality and construction of it. The pants were perfect and the jacket was nearly perfect, though slightly off in the shoulders. From what I gather, it's normal to have a few adjustments on your first MTM experience, but these were very minor. I was able to have Black Lapel send it to their tailor, whom I later picked the suit up from. Everything was covered by BL and when I received my suit again, the shoulders still appeared slightly off. I proceeded to take it back to the tailor, assuming I'd have to pay for the further adjustments (since I assumed I went over their $$ in adjustments), and was pleasantly surprised when I picked it up and was informed that the tab was picked up by BL (I used their official tailor). Awesome! After all of that, the suit looks badass. No other way to say it. I've worn it several times since receiving it and have received way more compliments than any other suit I've worn. Couldn't be happier. Having a custom suit is the way to go, and if you can't afford bespoke quality, then this is the perfect alternative to getting an awesome fit and good quality. read more

My wedding is upcoming and I wanted to treat myself to a Tuxedo that would get the attention of my fiancé and guests. So I searched Yelp and came across Black Lapel and their stellar reviews. Their blue tuxedo on their website grabbed my attention right away. I made an appointment to go to their showroom to see it in person and get measured. From the beginning I worked with Jay and he took excellent care of me. As soon as I tried on their sample, I fell in love and had to have it. Jay took all my measurements and guided me through the process of customizing it to make it my own. I ordered the tux and a tuxedo shirt. A few weeks later, Jay emailed me and told me the tux arrived and I went back for a fitting. Quality was great and everything fit well, but it wasn't perfect. Jay took the time to examine all areas that could be made to fit slightly better (even if it was only a ¼ inch) and made note of the necessary alterations. They then sent the Tux to their local tailor and I came back again a week later. This time it all fit perfectly and I looked incredibly dapper. The only remaining wrinkle was that everything needed to be repressed. Of course, Jay told me to take the Tux to the cleaners, get it all pressed, and to send him a picture of the bill for reimbursement...icing on the cake. In short, Black Lapel will make you look good and feel good throughout the whole order process by taking care of your every concern. Black Lapel is a Made to Measure service, which means that the suit you oder is made for your body. Therefore, the most important thing when ordering from BL is getting the measurements right. However, don't let that deter you. If they aren't exactly perfect, BL is willing to pay for alterations if they can be done. And if they can't, they are willing to replace the suit. They will also update your fit profile for you accordingly. They want to make sure your suit fits you right, so they have you send pics after you get it, and they will make alteration suggestions if anything is wrong. And they are more concerned with your suit's fit than making money off this particular sale. I appreciate and respect that because it keeps me coming back. Now that my measurement profile is perfect, when I order a suit from BL it comes in and it just fits. I don't need to take it to the tailor at all. It's just right. The fabrics are excellent, the attention to detail is exact, the range of customizations for the suits is impressive, and the customer service is unbeatable. Review is a long-time coming and well deserved. BL is an amazing option for affordable suits that fit impeccably - just make sure you are very clear on expectations and how you want your suit to fit. For example, I was explicit on slim fit and effort to have a bespoke look; after a fitting and a few adjustments, they nailed it on both occasions I purchased a suit (note that I live in NYC and was able to meet in person for the measurements then come back to the show room for the fitting process - which I can imagine makes the process much easier). Working in a profession that requires a suit everyday, I got tired of spending so much money and time browsing for off the rack suits that either didn't fit right, or required lots of time in tailoring to get to fit moderately well. I came here after doing a lot of research online regarding the whole "custom" suit business. I decided to give this place a shot. I made an appointment and went to meet with Brianne. The experience was very pleasant. Numerous measurements were made and there were many customization options, as featured on the website. There are samples of the different suits available to see as well, which was very helpful. I ordered two suits at that time and left. Approximately 3 weeks, later the suits were completed and I was scheduled for my first fitting. When I went, the consultant advised on different areas to ensure a better fit. She was very careful with her measurements and the process was a breeze. The suit was sent for a round of alterations at no extra charge. Approximately two weeks after that, the alterations were completed and I went in for another fitting. This time, the suit fit like a glove. Let me know just say that I am a HUGE fan of this company. I just purchased my second custom suit from Black Lapel a few weekends ago. The first suit was a tuxedo that I purchased two years ago. At the time of my first purchase, I had never purchased a made to measure suit. I was a bit skeptical about putting my faith in an online clothier. With that said, I liked the idea of a custom tailored suit that would last me for years. I also liked their price point. After doing a ton of online research and scouring the web for reviews, I decided to reach out to Black Lapel directly. I was immediately impressed with the responsiveness of their online support (their concierge service). I got extremely quick responses to my emails, as well as free style consulting that they provided. I must have asked a ton of questions, and every single one was responded to in an expedient manner, with a very personal touch. When my tux finally arrived, I was doubly impressed. The fit and fabric exceeded my expectations and I knew that it would be very difficult to go back to wearing off the rack suits again. I now wear that tuxedo when I have an opportunity. I felt really lucky to have found Black Lapel and chalked part of my experience up to finding them at the right time (a young company who is hungry for new customers and smart enough to know that they need to make fans out of their customer base). Flash forward to Black Friday of this year. I saw that they were having a Black Friday promotion and I lept at the chance to get a good deal on a new suit from Black Lapel. Due to some technical hiccups on my end, I ended up missing the promotional discount deadline by a few minutes. I was still excited about my new suit, but figured that I should just accept that I had screwed up and that I had missed my window for a special deal. Then I remembered the main reason I chose Black Lapel over their competitors in the first place, their excellent customer service. I decided to reach out to ask it an exception would be possible. I had a great experience with Black Lapel, and was lucky to find them in time to get a nice navy suit for my wedding. It feels and looks fantastic, and the quality was far superior to most suits I've seen in stores (even the really expensive ones). I have weird dimensions (very narrow waist but wider shoulders) and no off-the-rack size works for me. Believe me, I have tried most brick-and-mortar stores as well as bought and returned suits from countless online retailers. A note about BL's measurements: I live across the country but was lucky enough to be passing through NYC and be able to get into their shop to get measurements done in person -- this was important as I was way off in measuring myself! The suit that arrived was as good a fit as a first try could be for me, but suits are complicated and again, weird frame here: it needed some minor adjustments to fit right. However, they were really quick with reimbursing me for the alterations done by a local seamstress/tailor (and alterations cost a lot even if it's just a couple of seams, so it was super helpful to have that reimbursement!). I highly recommend going in to their shop to get measured if it is at all possible. The tailor who did the alterations said something to the effect of "sure, they messed up slightly with this measurement here [the cost was ~$15 to alter, so nbd] but overall, this suit is really well constructed!" I needed a suit for my wedding. I've never bought a MTM suit before, always just bought off the rack at Brooks Brothers or the like. I have a pretty normal build (6ft, 180lbs), and am not particularly into style or picky about this stuff - so the OTR suits generally work pretty well for me (or so I thought). I decided that I should get something nice for my wedding. A friend of mine suggested Black Lapel to me, so I decided to give it a try. I live in NYC so I went into their Chelsea office. Highly recommend this if you can swing it - I would be lost trying to do my own measurements and liked having someone who does this for a living do it for me. Frank was extraordinarly helpful in walking me through the options and doing my measurements. I got a three piece, charcol blue suit and paid extra to do the jacket full canvas. You need to push them a little to get the full canvas if this is something you are interested in as they don't seem to offer it unless you ask. They have great color choices which was nice because we were able to get something special that went with our wedding colors. The suit came in about 4 weeks. Needed a good steaming but otherwise looked great. Materials are great - love the colors, the buttons and the stiching. Per their suggestion, I brought the suit into their office for a fitting. Frank was great at giving me advice on what needed to be done. The vest and the pants fit great out of the box. The jacket needed some minor adjustments. Apparently my right shoulder is lower than my left shoulder, so they put in some padding to make the shoulders of the jacket straight. This was something I had noticed before (that my suits dip slightly on the right side), but I just lived with it and never even thought about addressing it. They did the alteration for free. When I came in for the second fit, everything was great. Given how great the suit fit, I also bought a couple pairs of pants for work. If you work in a business casual enviroment, you probably don't worry to much about the fit of your pants. At least that was the way I was. As it turns out, it makes a huge difference. Their pants are an amazing fit and look much better than the baggy pants I get OTR. The best part is that once you've gone through the process of getting measured and fitted, they save all of your measurements in their system so getting more stuff is easy as click, click, click - no need to go to the tailor. They aren't particularly cheap - you aren't going to save money compared to buying suits / pants OTR at a place like Brooks Brothers (especially if you get them on sale). The difference is you are getting high quality materials and a perfect fit. If you can afford it, I think it is worth the cost. I certainly look a lot better, and its not a significant amount more effort - which is good for me. read more

The first suit I bought was close to perfect and needed some minor adjustments, which is common with made to measure suits which isn't always going to be perfect the first time. Luckily Black Lapel offers credit for additional alterations made and they will also take those changes and apply them to your next suit. My first suit from Black Lapel was my wedding suit. My fiance took all my measurements, following some instructional videos that made it easy for her. I was impressed by the number of measurements that were required (something like 17). It gave me confidence that the suit I ordered would be well fitting. I was also impressed with the ease of use for their website. I love how many different ways I am able to customize suits from BL. being able to change out the lining, add pick stitching or a ticket pocket or change up the width of my lapel all let me know that this suit is being crafted for me. And they aren't charging me more money for the different customization either. Unless it is to add a vest, the customization are just part of it. When the suit came in, they had me send pictures of myself wearing it. The send back a detailed feedback report about the fit, telling me to get a few minor alterations. I got the alterations at a local tailor and they reimbursed me that cost (incredible!). They also went ahead and updated my fit profile. So, when I ordered my second suit, the fit was flawless the first time I put it on right out of the box. I am very impressed with the quality of the suits. Especially my second suit, which was made of super 130s wool. I feel like a million bucks when I'm wearing their suit, and I look like it too. I was super impressed with the customer service. I was a little concerned about some of them so when I ordered the suit, I contacted their concierge. Georgina quickly replied with good advice about my measurements and after looking at pictures of me wearing my previous suit, made a number of recommendations. In less than three weeks, I received an email saying my suit had shipped. It was to my house in less than a week from China. Like my first suit, the craftmanship is exceptional and it fits perfectly. Add to this the customization possible and the wide range of fabrics, I can't imagine buying a suit off-the-rack ever again. I have had several experiences with custom suits with varying success. I was a little skeptical when I ran across Black Lapel on an internet search for a single breasted navy pinstripe suit; however, I saw the great reviews and read a couple of articles about them and they were all good, so I decided to give it a try. I have never purchased any MTM clothing without actually getting measured, so I I followed their instructions religiously. After submitting the order with my measurements, I got an email from the concierge letting me know that the tailors said they looked a little "off", so I had my wife measure me again (several times!), to ensure the measurements were accurate. I also submitted photos of myself as they requested. There was subsequently some back and forth with the concierge, because I was worried that my measurements were wrong, or I misunderstood their instructions. I always received a reply to my emails within a few hours addressing all of my issues. They were also emails from a real person, not computer generated, so that went a long way in putting my mind at ease. The promised timeframe for delivery was 4 weeks, but I received the suit in 3 weeks. I tried the suit on and it fit perfectly. Even though they provide reimbursement for any subsequent alterations needed if ordered by mail, I din't need any alterations at all. The fabric is medium weight and drapes nicely. The stitching details are all superb. They even managed to make it fit in a way that is slimming (unfortunately, my fondness for chocolate has gotten in the way of that 'V' shape), and complimentary to me. For the price, I feel that this is a good quality suit, and blows OTR suits out of the water. I will definitely be shopping with them again. The service here was absolutely superb. I wasn't even the customer, and I was pleased with how they were treating me (thank you for free water). I don't normally write reviews, but this company has been so awesome that I felt it's the least I could do. Let me begin by saying that I have not yet received my suit, so this review only encompasses their service and attention to detail. However, rest assured that I will definitely update my review once the finish product arrives. I am looking to get a tuxedo for my sister's wedding, but I don't have the time or desire to go shopping at a traditional department store, so I decided to try an online MTM suiting company. Although this is a relatively new trend, there are already a plethora of options, but based on reviews I found online, Black Lapel seems like the best bang for my buck. However, if I'm already going custom, I decided to have something special made up for me, instead of getting the typical tuxedo. This is where Black Lapel's customer service really stands out. To date, I have an e-mail chain over 50 messages long (all for one tuxedo), where they are bending over backwards to satisfy my every request (seriously, this tux will kick ass). A special shout-out goes to Ann, who's been helping me from the very beginning. I visited their pop-up shop in Soho last week, where I met Jay, one of their stylist, and also Derek, one of the company founders, who were also very helpful. That shop is now closed I think, but my understanding is that they also have a permanent location in Midtown Manhattan for personal measurements. Of course, everything depends on the actual product, which I will review when I receive it.
