Greatest skate shop in Seattle! OG! They know what's up! Awesome selection on boards, awesome clothing

This record store is small but mighty. The collection of used vinyl is tiny but very well curated- I came across TWO Crass sleeves! The new selection is bigger but still small enough to clear your way through entirely in about thirty minutes. Their rap section was bigger than most stores thrice BMS' size and, again, was very well curated. If you go to the store and come out without having seen anything you want to purchase, you probably need to reassess your musical taste. This was a great find for us. My teenage son has been skateboarding more seriously for about a year now and was looking to improve his board setup based on what he learned through practicing. We had gone to a number of other skate shops around and none had all of the hardware that he was looking for. We drove up to the somewhat rundown house in which Black Market Skates is located and my son's first question was 'Are we in the right place?' Having not always lived in the suburbs, my first thought when seeing the Independent banner hanging in the window was that not only were we in the right place, but that this is the real deal (not some mall replica of a skate shop). I'm into other sports and hobbies that don't necessarily attract a mainstream customer base so I know that the best retail stores for these activities are often not particularly dressed up. But what these types of shops do have are staff that know all about what they are selling and equipment designed to perform better (instead of just looking good in a store). The staff at Black Market Skates definitely know what they are talking about and provided in-depth advice on considerations such as what firmness of wheels that would best suit the type of skating that my son wanted to do. I was also really impressed by how much equipment they keep in stock. They have hundreds of decks and wheels as well as a wide selection of trucks and bearings. This is definitely a store that focuses on what skaters need for skating versus the clothing and shoes that wanna-bes are looking for to look like a skater. Given the large number of decks in stock (including their own shop brand of decks at a great price) and all of the other components he wanted, my son walked out the door in 45 minutes with an expertly assembled skateboard that he wanted to ride outside the store. Hands down the best skate shop in the entire Seattle area. Took my kid here to get a board and picked up a few things for myself. Great selection of boards, clothes, and even records. Lots of parking and easy to get to. Super helpful staff and good customer service. Prices are very reasonable too. read more

By far BEST SKATE SHOP in Washington!! Oliver and Oblika(sorry if misspelled) where super friendly and made my family feel comfortable buying. We picked up a deck and a fully set up board. A nice local skate shop. Clean, well organized, knowledgeable staff, and gets thing done. It's mostly decks and hardware than clothes and vinyls. Shop decks are around $40 and they will apply grip tape for you for $5. The staff aren't as engaging or welcoming, but responsive in getting what I need. read more

I find it a bit spooky and all the staff needs haircuts but my son likes it here and the prices seem reasonable (But what do I know haha) I just wish my son had picked a safer hobby! read more

I have placed on online order with Black Market Skates all the way from the UK. The guys had in store certain skateboarding magazines and DVDs that I was after, but I also purchased some merch as part of the order. When one mag issue turned out to be out of stock, they contacted me very promptly and have agreed to my suggestion of a substitution, whilst kindly throwing in an extra mag, a couple of zines and some stickers as well. The international shipping option was timely and the items arrived in great condition. Black Market is an awesome, real deal skate shop, 1 of only 2 in all of Seattle. Everyone who has ever worked there is a true dedicated skate rat. Every piece of skate gear they carry is top notch, none of that fake or cheap stuff. You can't go wrong at Black Market, everything about this place is 100% legit and true to traditional skating. Also when you shop at Black Market you support the grass roots Seattle skate scene, because this shop sponsors local kids, helps organize events like the belltown block party and helps keep the DIY fire alive at places like Marginal Way - unlike mail order / dot.com / mall store alternatives. A true hardcore skateshop that has been around a while and with your support hopefully will continue to be. This type of shop is the backbone of skate culture and needs to be supported if you care at all about skateboarding. Unfortunately shops like this are endangered species these days. I took my son the Black Market Skates for his first skateboard. They were great and very friendly. Very helpful in steering him to the right size board for a beginner. The board was built in 15 minutes and I'm confident we got great quality for a good price. The store may be tiny but they have a lot of stock. read more

Great shop. Relaxed vibe.Old school skaters, new and old school stuff. It's surprising how much they fit in that little place. They had everything and were cheaper than the chain stores. If they look closed, they're probably open. They always look closed. Maybe red or blue light hanging out the could help people know you're open. read more
