Brunch at Black Rabbit inside McMenamins Edgefield was such a lovely experience with my girlfriends. I ordered the banana French toast with eggs and sausage links. Wish they offered non pork option is the only complaint. I prefer turkey or chicken links. They do have vegetarian meat option though. everything was warm, comforting, and satisfying. The cozy atmosphere was one of my favorite parts: great lighting, clean space, and we could actually hear each other talk without shouting. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, which made it even better. After brunch, we walked around Edgefield and enjoyed the gardens and scenery it turned a simple meal into a full, relaxing outing. I'm a big fan of all the McMenimin's hotels and restaurants, but within this very funky kaleidoscope of hotels, restaurants, theaters, and more I do have my favorites. The Edgefield is right at the top of these favorites, and the Black Rabbit is a great spot for any meal at any time of day you choose. Service is always top-notch, and I've never had a meal here I didn't like. They have a great morning Bloody Mary that is garnished well enough to be a full breakfast. But for a less alcohol, alcoholic option, the menu overall is very good and I recommend you work your way through it. Given the restaurant chain's overall kitch , the ambience inside this restaurant is calm and welcoming but just funky enough to be fun. If you're staying here, eat here. If you're in the area, try it out. I'll be back the next time. I'm anywhere near Troutdale. read more

This was my first time having brunch here, and I will definitely be back. Their menu has a really good selection, and they also have seasonal offerings that change. It was fairly quiet for a weekend morning. The restaurant is decorated really fun and in typical McMennamins fashion. Our server was really friendly and attentive. Our food came out quickly as well. Such a historical and beautiful place, dimly lit and decorated with intricate art and stained glass. Went here with a party of 5 for lunch under a reservation. The staff was quick and accommodating. The food itself wasn't anything special to me, I ordered the Bolognese, and while it was good, i don't think it was worth the 24$ it costs. Overall worth the experience on the property for sure but I prefer the Power Station. read more

We actually went here about two months ago and forgot to post this review. This place was amazing huge and kind of confusing because it looks like a big house and there's different sections. There's a gift shop. I think there's a spa or something like that and there's its own like sectional bar however the dinner was amazing. This place was fantastic. I drove from about 2 and 1/2 hours away to do some shopping around Portland and found this amazing spot via Google maps. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Mcmenamins spot so close to where I finished my shopping trip. There's a cute hotel and large property here as well with a brewery, theater, restaurant and much more. I ordered the Ribeye and a Caesar salad. The salad dressing was expertly made from scratch. I could take a bath in it it was so good. Perfect amount of tang and just the right amount of garlic in the background. It was so simple yet one of the top Caesar dressings I've ever had and that's no exaggeration. The steak was ordered medium and that's exactly how it came. Whoever their chef was on Monday night 1/5/26 really knows what they are doing. The steak had perfect grill marks, was flavorful, tender, and sat on a bed of the most delicious and slightly crispy potatoes with broccolini. Prior to devouring the amazing food I had tried the Mcmenamins Supersemisonic IPA. It was GOOD lol. I can't get over the level of quality they put into crafting this beer. It wasn't super bitter like some IPA is. It just had a perfect balance and went well with the food ordered. As a treat I asked the bartender about their scotch and decided to try The Macallan 18yr single malt. So amazing is all I can say. It goes down so smooth you couldn't even tell it was alcohol lol. Great choices at their bar! I would definitely come back again for the food alone and maybe stay here a couple days and check out the property. Make a reservation! Went for a Sunday brunch (and have been for an early dinner in the past) and it was lovely. It can get busy, so if you can make a reservation. I will say the restaurant does have low light, but not needing a flashlight. As for the food, I had the Gluten-free pancakes with a side of bacon and my partner had the avocado toast. The toast was good for a small breakfast, and had a unique touch of lemon oil. My pancakes were a lot good. The lemon curd and berry sauce were great adds. I will say they were a bit burnt, as was the side of bacon. For any bacon lovers, it was a bit thin for me. For the coffee, we didn't get enough creamer. Service was friendly and fast. Upon entering the Black Rabbit Restaurant & Bar at Edgefield, I was struck, not by the ambiance--an agreeable if somewhat manufactured rustic charm--but by a quiet hope that breakfast, the most humble of meals, might surprise me with a touch of elevated care. Alas, hope, like an overcooked egg, is a delicate thing. Mishandle it, and it collapses into mediocrity. Let us begin with the eggs--though one wonders if the kitchen ever truly did. My companion ordered eggs Benedict, a dish that lives and dies by the texture of its poached egg. Hers arrived hard-cooked, the yolk sealed off like a prison, refusing its golden escape. An unforgivable offense in the Benedict realm. My own eggs were intended to be scrambled--simple, comforting, classic. What I received were two over-medium eggs, one with a yolk already ruptured as if to say, "We gave up halfway." Wrong order. Poorly executed. And yet... edible. In the way instant oatmeal is edible--sustaining, but entirely joyless. The potatoes were lukewarm. Not cold, not hot--just comfortably disinterested. A metaphor, perhaps, for the kitchen's approach. The gravy, curiously studded with bacon instead of sausage, was acceptable, if unconventional--though I wonder if "bacon" was code for a cost-saving pivot. A rare bright spot: the chicken-fried steak. Crisp, tender, appropriately seasoned. A dish that dared to aspire. Yet at its price, one expects more than just adequacy. One expects distinction. Here, again, I was left with the disquieting sense of a dish almost worthy of its cost, but not quite. At this price point, the Black Rabbit promises sophistication. What it delivers is serviceable food served in the right atmosphere, but without the heart--or precision--that breakfast demands to be memorable. We arrived around 3pm on Saturday and hopped around to the Red Cabin while waiting for friends. We got a table for 8 at Black Rabbit quickly. This place is cute! One of our friends has a toddler and this restaurant doesn't allow minors. That was a little disappointing. They went to another restaurant instead. Service was ok. We got our orders pretty quickly, but no silverware or napkins. I was super hungry, so I just went to town on the charcuterie, tots, and sprouts. I drew the line at the pappardelle. I liked our server. He was very pleasant. He got us tasters for the beers, which I appreciated. I liked the cheeses and the whole charcuterie board. Everything was delicious. I think the roasted beets was missing a sour and a salty element. The tiny salad was sweet and bland. The pasta could've used extra cheese, but I was stuffed by this time. The experience could've been better, but large parties in the middle of the day in a full restaurant is tough. I'd come back for the cheese and fig jam. read more

Highly recommend eating inside the restaurant versus the food within the concert. We arrived early so we could park easily and decided to inside the black rabbit restaurant. They were able to see as quickly on the patio outside which is a beautiful garden area. Especially if you could eat outside, I'd say this is more of a 4 to 5 on ambience. The food unfortunately very underwhelming. We ordered crab and artichoke dip. We really couldn't taste any crab at all. Would pass on that choice next time. We were excited for the loaded tots... next time we will just get regular tots because they were basically covered in a cream sauce which was described as a brie cream, the pork belly was dry and tasted more like chicken. I don't know how they managed to do that. We ordered the black rabbit burger, medium well with a side of Caesar, and we received the black bean burger with the wrong salad. It was very slow to get the burger. We waited another 30 or so minutes to get the correct burger. Our waitress was very helpful and kind and she made sure everything was resolved. Prices were reasonable we spent about $65 on a lunch for two and it took us about two + hours to eat here. read more

What bar runs out of Tan query gin, and the house Sauvignon Blanc!! The kitchen and/or the service was ridiculously slow!! 30 minutes to get our drinks, an hour for dinner to arrive. (2 hours and we still didn't get to dessert). Not just us, everyone in the restaurant was waiting and waiting ! They were not too busy. No bus person. Head server was overly loud, effusive and gushingly friendly, but she got things done and kept everyone distracted from the waiting for meals. We used to enjoy having breakfast at the Black Rabbit. This most recent visit was terrible. We sat in the bar because the server and another patron told it was much faster than in the main eating area. We did not receive our food for over an hour and then it was hardly warm. The person who brought the food was grousing to the other server. And, the prices now are ridiculous for breakfast. We will not be returning to the Black Rabbit. Not wasting time or money to get mediocre food. Will stick to the Bleu Door Bakery for quality and taste. read more

I ate here twice on my trip to Troutdale and had a lovely experience both times! When we went for dinner, the food was absolutely amazing. We started with some lovely warmed olives and a beet salad. I love that they use vegetables from the farm onsite! Our waiter was friendly and helpful, but forgot to bring us water. I got the tikka tofu for dinner and it was incredible! The texture was amazing and I loved the sauce. I'm gluten free and pescatarian, so it was awesome having a few items on the menu that I could eat. I paired this with the local Pinot noir that they make in the building! It was amazing. The next morning for breakfast, I was pleased to find out that they have gluten free bread. I got the lox bagel gluten free with a side of eggs. It was so fresh and amazing- you can tell they have really fresh local ingredients. My mom got the gluten free waffles and those were delicious. Beautiful restaurant & pub located in sprawling McMenamins Edgefield complex (see my separate review of the entire complex for additional details). Highly recommend reading about the history of the property on their website. This restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating (lovely big courtyard patio), and the cozy bar area even has a small outdoor balcony section with three little tables for two that overlooks the downstairs courtyard patio. The menu is more on the pricey side compared to the other bar/dining options on the property. I had the steak frites and the Hubs had the wild boar entree, and both were delicious and generously portioned. They have a variety of their own beers & wines, along with cocktails. Service was just okay as our server didn't seem to be in a jovial mood, but he got the job done. read more

Pretentious for its own sake, Black Rabbit emulates fine dining without any of the integrity in execution signature to the style it emulates. Uninformed staff is understandable when there's a new menu item, but some things are unacceptable. Dishes that share only half their ingredients with the menu description, sharing plates arriving before utensils, or condiments needing multiple requests with a dining room less than half full, for example. I've now come here three times over the course of two years, and each experience has been notably worse than the last. I have no objection to a single dish running $35+, provided that it does a reasonable job with either providing a satisfying portion or else highlighting the quality of its ingredients. The only dishes I've had at black rabbit that accomplish either of these goals are the appetizers. The eggplant dip and seared ahi were both exceptional, but nowhere near enough to offset the disappointment of only finding out after a dish has been brought to the table that multiple ingredients for the dish are out of stock. Especially on a brand new menu. Black Rabbit fails to deliver on the expectation set by its prices and the novelty of its ingredients, with poorly executed dishes (including staples like steak-frites) completely breaking any illusion of sophistication or integrity. read more

The Black Rabbit Restaurant is located in the historic Edgefield hotel near the Columbia River Gorge. This is a great location for tourists and locals as it is approximately 15-20 minutes from Multnomah Falls and also very close to downtown Portland. This was my first time coming here for brunch and I really enjoyed my food. The service was mediocre for such a prestigious and well known place, but the food made up for it. I keep going back and forth in deciding if Mcmenamins is overrated, and I think most locations are, but this one in particular is super special. The prices are fair for this time period we're in now: the pancakes were $16.75 and the Benedict was about $18 or so, and the ambiance and quirkiness is really part of the experience. I wouldn't say this is the best brunch place outside of Portland, but if you're in the area, it's a reasonable place to go to. read more

Being here you're a somewhat captive audience and with the number of spots to dine, should be able to get decent meals onsite. The night we checked in was my birthday. I was looking forward to a nice dinner and drinks, maybe some dessert. We were told they were very busy, which I think made our server feel excused in not checking on us or paying attention. They took our order for one drink the entire dinner, no refill, even of water, or offer to order a second round. I ordered a halibut dinner and the halibut was a brick, completely dry. I ate no bites from the plate after seeing it was so dry, the server didn't come until my husband was done with his meal, and he gave no apology, offer to refund or replace it with anything else, just asked if we wanted dessert. The next morning, I was really hungry and ready to eat breakfast after such a rough dinner. I figured, how bad could it be ruined, it's basic breakfast? My veggie omelette arrived with bacon in it, and the attached picture shows the burned toast. They replaced my omelette, thankfully and brought another round of burned toast. read more

Very fun stellar service at the bar. Autumn is funny and incredibly helpful! The Bloody Maria was perfect! The burger and Brussels were excellent. I love good food! Worth the price tag. Crispy hasbrowns are my weakness! The morning before we got the caramelized onion omelette and chicken fried steak (no pictures) entrees. The omelette was a stand out. Really good ingredients and it worked well with the sharp white cheese. The Terminator toast is a must try but the English muffin was just as great! Large portion and perfect with jelly. I've been here several times since I wrote my last review. I still find it a restful place where I feel like I've traveled some distance from home, while actually being not very far away at all. Got there this morning at opening and staff were still setting up. I helped myself to a menu, and brought one to a table nearby. It just seemed the friendly thing to do. The breakfast choices are brief but appetizing. I had the bagel and lox and my + 1 had the eggs/toast/plant based sausage. Oolong tea - perfectly steeped. I gotta say, the cream cheese with bits of chive hit me just right and I felt like the universe was in order for the half hour I was there. The toast that came with the other breakfast was thick and fresh, great with the jam. Service was very friendly and attentive - in spite of being obviously short staffed and kinda tired from a busy schedule. We sat in the bar, at a table next to the window, and enjoyed a slow roll into the morning. We talked about the future and if we could be optimistic about it, and switched sides arguing the counterpoint several times. We both finally agreed that there are reasons to look forward and be eager about what might be around the corner. Oh, to be able to dine *inside* again is a glorious thing! My wife and I had a bunch of weekend plans that, for one reason or another, all fell apart at the last minute, so we pivoted and made a day of passport stamp hunting, starting with a late brunch at Edgefield's Black Rabbit. We were able to reserve a table on OpenTable two hours ahead of time, but came early to tour the grounds, and due to a technical glitch with the app, were able to be seated immediately, so we leapt on the chance. Score! Between the four of us (two of the boys were with us), we ordered a mighty feast: the spicy crispy chicken sandwich with truffle tots for myself, a bowl of the coconut curry soup and the salmon gravlax bagel for the wife, and two kids entrees: chicken tenders for one and buttermilk pancakes for the other. Add to that a "tomato juice" (Bloody Mary) and "apple cider" (Hot Apple Chai) for us discerning adults, and everyone at the table was beaming when it all arrived. The chicken patty on my sandwich was a thick piece of breast, lightly breaded and crisp, garnished with a fantastic Korean mayo and slaw that, when paired together, blessed it with an Asian flair that was quite welcome! My wife *loves* the coconut curry soup (personally, I can't stand it); it's one of her favorite iterations of it anywhere. She was also enamored of her pseudo-lox bagel, although she was slightly disappointed that the salmon was room-temperature warm instead of refrigerated, which she felt could be an indicator of improper storage methods. The Black Rabbit maintains McMenamins' reputation for tasty food, great service, and unique locals and decor. Definitely among their better locations, and a worthy member of Edgefield's array of drinking and dining establishments! Warm, full and content: that's how we left the Black Rabbit, ready to brave the elements, thankful for not having to sit outside in another open air tent in the middle of winter! My Wife and I were up early making our way to Trillium Lake and needed a stop for breakfast. We did a quick Yelp Search and came across the highest rated restaurant in Troutdale. From the outside the place is beautiful like something out of the old west. The entry to the restaurant is striking, rocking chairs in the front just awesome. The hostess was extremely friendly as was the rest of the staff. The dining area was just as cool with the old time booths and tables along with the old time lighting. We didn't realize this restaurant was part of the McMenamins brand, which is a big deal around Oregon. They have a gift shop with anything and everything you may have forgotten on your way. Food we ordered Caramel Apple Waffle: Wow this thing is HUGE. TONS of bacon crisp apples and amazing sourdough Waffle this is a must get. Make your own Omelet Great vegetable Omelet with fresh vegetables and amazing homestyle potatoes Chai Latte: Really delicious surprising to find a good chai in this location Coffee: Nothing to call home about, it was hot but nothing special. The Menu isn't extensive but they have enough of a variety you can really get what you want. Prices are a bit expensive but the service was fantastic with great recommendations from the waitstaff.
