This is one of the few places in Hawaii that actually has a restriom inside! Also, they were nice & gave me a mask for my husband to use since be forgot his back at our hotel. The place is clean & casual. There are barriers between the booths for privacy too. The food was delicious too. They hace a full bar & the service was fast. The people there are friendly & attentive. There is a good variety to choose from. I ordered the fish & chips which was good. I also got a lava flow which was really good! My husband ordered a steak. The prices are reasonable & the portions are big. They also have pasta dishes & burgers on the menu too. There's a 7-11 across the street if you need to get drinks & snacks for the road. One of those cafes in a small town locals go to for eating out, but not something fancy - more of comfort food. Parking is OK. There's a small lot in the front and I suppose you could park in the other lots nearby. If not, there is street parking but it is further down the road. There is also a bar but we didn't dine there. The restaurant itself is nice. It has that "original" feel - like vintage. There's quite a bit of booths and tables. Food was alright. We ordered the Hamburger Steak and cheeseburger. My hamburger steak came with 2 sides, which I chose garlic mash potatoes and steamed vegetables. The hamburger steak was pretty good. The sauce could've been a little more tasty as it was a little bland. The meat itself was alright - nothing special. Steamed vegetables were a nice, healthy alternative to fries. The garlic mash potatoes - holy GOD - if you LOVE garlic, then you'll like this. Don't get me wrong, I like garlic but this was WAY TOO garlic-y for me. It felt like it was mashed garlic with potatoes. I couldn't even eat half because it was much too garlic-y. The cheeseburger was alright. Again, nothing special. Curly fries ordered with the burger was good! The fries were done right. Pickles provided were kind of vinegary and soggy...sorry, I must note that for the pickle lovers. Prices were OK. Portions may justify the cost but taste, maybe not so much. I'd say prices were $10-$15 for full entrees. Burgers, salads, and sandwiches were under $10 - which is pretty good. I also heard they had dessert so that's an option as well. Staff was OK. The server was friendly and gave suggestions but again, nothing special. You know when you get a server and you feel them giving minimal effort to get us in and out because they have to? Yeah, that's the feeling I got. No complaints. Try this place out for yourself! On a whim while visiting Pahoa I popped into this funky local diner for a late breakfast. The staff was friendly and the food was basic but good -- I had corned beef hash (definitely homemade) and scrambled eggs. The coffee, unfortunately, was so-so. On the other hand, the place is an incredible value. My whole meal, including coffee and tax, came to $13.03. Basic bacon or sausage and eggs is even less. This place is just that one local bar and restaurant that every small town used to have. If you're from here then you know. If you're on holiday then let me tell you. The Food is good local fare, beer is cold, but really it is where people meet before and after work. It's what we used to call a pub, or public house. It is the place where local girls get their first job, have children, their children work there 20 years later next to mom who never left. I have heard it said of the owner that he has walked several of his newlywed employees "down the aisle", because their real fathers were not available. Yeah, so no one cares how your Burger was cooked. just know that it was cooked with local grass fed beef with love by good people who do good things and make this small town a decent place. Sometimes your meal at a restaurant will come with a delectable side of vegetables. At the blackrock your meal will come with a side of community sprinkled with human decency And fries. There is always a bag of oranges or avocados by the door from local farmers for local people who need. It's where we go to find a carpenter or a babysitter on short notice, or to eat a pancake the size of a large pizza. So this is my review . If that isn't enough of a reason for you to eat there , then please go back to the mainland and have your burger cooked just right At your local chain restaurant. Good clean breakfast in Pahoa. My wife and I ate here yesterday for breakfast and found it good and fairly inexpensive. Service was good and so was the food. My wife had a half eggs benedict and I had pancakes with eggs and link sausage. My wife liked her Benedict and was thrilled when the waitress asked if she wanted it soft or medium poached. My wife actually likes her yolks hard so this was a great question. My 1 pancake could have fed 2. I would have liked my eggs and sausage on a separate plate instead of on the giant pancake but I get why they do that. I just like ketchup with my eggs. Our bill with a coffee with less than $16.00. A couple of tips here. Try to park in front as the back area where the laundromat is can be kind of sketchy but harmless. This is true for most of the surrounding area but we still love it. Located in a tiny Town I was initially thinking what in the world are we gonna eat here... This is the why you don't judge something by what it necessarily looks like. So being so hungry we ordered 3 plates because hey we couldn't decide. French toast, loco Moco, and the basic breakfast eggs/bacon/rice/hash brown. Let me tell you I was in heaven with the simple French toast, didn't taste like eggs, the right amount of cinnamon, and their butter was awesome. I usually only like a few bites of French toast but needless to say I ate it all. The loco moco had a great gravy and that's what makes or breaks a good dish. The burger was a tad over cooked to me resulting in tougher meat, but was still good. The eggs plate was a typical dish kind of hard to mess that one up. Now a plus here was service, I don't require much you want a good tip make sure water is coming on a constant. I drink crazy amounts of water with my meals and if I'm waiting on water I tend to get irritated. These ladies did well given there was only 2 of them, so I could understand the hustle. They took notice when I was empty and made sure to get to me as soon as possible. I'm glad we feel into this diner! read more

Black Rock Cafe has always been my favorite place to eat breakfast in Pahoa. This place doesn't look like much from the outside and the decor is simple inside, but the food is surprisingly good. I've only ever been here for breakfast. I loooove eggs benedict and have ordered the veggie eggs benedict a few times from Black Rock Cafe. Each time I've ordered the eggs benedict it was just superb. The eggs were poached perfectly and hollandaise sauce tasted great. The side of hash browns tasted like they were bought frozen in a bag, but it was still cooked nicely and wasn't burnt. My husband ordered the chicken loco moco and that came with a lot of food and brown gravy. It was also good. We couldn't decide whether to order pancakes or belgian waffles to share so we asked the waitress what she would recommend. She said, "I wouldn't order the waffles. They're frozen and heated up and don't taste good at all." Whoa, thank you for being so honest with us! We decided on the pancakes and were so happy when we got them. The pancakes were tall, fluffy, and melted in our mouths. I would definitely recommend Black Rock Cafe to those passing through Pahoa town and looking for a quality place to eat breakfast. Where the service ranges from the casual to the sloppy and the mice have been known to make appearances from time to time (check the decorative trim up on the walls).
