Very nice ambiance with low lights in a basement.... A chef driven menu with something for everyone.... Our waitress was tops and the libations from the bar were spot on.. my dining mate had the lamb and said it was phenomenal.. I ordered a pan fried walleye.. the fish was prepared well but could have used more sauce. I might choose to come back to try a pasta dish. I wanted the kitchen to switch out my side of mashed potatoes but the chef was unwilling. Since I don't eat meat I ordered the fish.... I paid the full price to eat a good but smaller portion of fish with no side. What happened to pleasing the patron. Anything besides potatoes would if worked for me. I eat at fine dining establishments and have always been able to have the chef recommend something else. Potatoes don't agree with me. So 3 stars for the uncaring chef. The desert was pretty good. Since NOVA closed down during the COVID pandemic, Hudson has needed a "sophisticated" spot that caters to good food paired with good wine in a friendly atmosphere away from the madding crowds. I dropped in on a random Thursday afternoon and by 6:30PM the place was jammed! The staff is friendly and family so they strive to support each other and make the experience exceptional. They have a monthly dinner pairing (didn't know about it, but will certainly return to participate!) that filled the main dining and back room. Glad to see them being successful. read more

Highly recommend. Small menu, but so many great options. Service was fantastic. We ordered the dumplings, pork belly and mushroom soup to start - and all were great - dumplings were our fav (I read another review that didn't like them - tasted like cheese curds was their quote? They've obviously never had cheese curds - as these were perfect and so good). Smoky old fashioned is very unique and worth a try. Main courses of duck breast and scallops (special prep that night) were excellent (loved the crispy duck skin). Even with their small menu - we had about 6-8 other options that we wanted to try, so we'll definitely be back. We had reservations for 12. We showed up a bit early and they were ready for us at our time. Between the 12 we had a great assortment of menu items and apps from the burgers to New York. Everything was done as expected ( the rib of lamb was amazing) and the staff were wonderful. We will definitely be back. read more

OMGosh! Amazing appetizers, entres and desserts. I cannot say enough about the food. The Chef is extraordinary with seasoning and sauces. The pork chop sauce is absolutely perfect with a hint of spice at the end of the bite. The sauce pairs and enhances the sweet potatoes and kale. There aren't enough adjectives to discribe the amazing herb flavors that elevates every dish.. Plus, the desserts are superb and the wines are absolutely beautiful. I honestly can't remember having better food. I'm not one to recommend Wisconsin for anything, but anyone in the twin cities needs to make the drive out to Hudson to eat here. I could have drank the Alfredo sauce on my (handmade) pasta! My mom got the chicken and she said it was the best chicken she's had in her entire life! Rick is a wizard in the kitchen. They also make a point to utilize local ingredients, my drink used honey infused vodka distilled in Alexandria, and local honey! First time here but will not be our last. We were seated at a great table kind of tucked away which was perfect for the four of us. Next to us against the wall were large booths and tables in the middle along with a very nice bar. Even though it is in the lower level the feeling was warm and comfortable. We each ordered a different cocktail (i usually don't) along with the ricotta dumplings, both were great. For an entree, I had the duck breast which I love when prepared correctly but have had many disappointing preparations and was hesitant in ordering again for the first time at a new restaurant. I do a lot of cooking and eating at good restaurants and am a critical dinner. The duck was absolutely perfectly prepared and delicious. It also gets points for presentation. The service was exceptional; helpful, attentive, friendly and not interfering. In short, I was amazed at whole experience, it's been a long time a coming. read more

My wife and I had dinner and everything was great. Loved the atmosphere and the food was amazing. Very creative cocktails. I had the pork loin with sptazel. Huge portion and cooked perfectly. I will order it again. My wife had the burger with an enormous portion of french fries. She loved it. I am a french fry snob and these passed my test with flying colors. Service was impeccable. BLACK ROOSTER BISTRO is the best new restaurant in Hudson WI. It's such a joy to be there to enjoy the place and all the exquisite delicate flavors of each dedicated creation of Chef Rick with such a great talent to obtain everything in balance. No too hot spicy flavors is "the key" and "the best" way to cook very tasty attractive food. The quality of all the ingredients and the presentation plus the nice service and atmosphere with such a homey vibe attracts us from now on...! Everybody at this new wonderful restaurant is so good and friendly! Of course, we miss Wienzer Stube but, we are very glad now to have these professional owners and chef plus the staff including Bartender Chad. He is also great! I had some takeout here and was so impressed by the food that I brought my family to dinner here. They actually do have a kids menu (not on the website) and were very accommodating with my young kids. It is a classy place, but comfortable. The staff was super nice. read more

We just ate here for the first time ever and I feel obligated to write this review because the meal was THAT DAMN GOOD. My husband got the burger with fancy sauce and it was truly the best burger we've had in Hudson. The patty was made up of bacon and beef and it was amazing. I got the shrimp fettuccine and it was fabulous. But the best part of the meal may have been the dessert. We got the banana pot de crème and the caramel brownie and wow! The brownie was rich, but the caramel made it amazing and the banana pot de creme was light and had the best crunchy stuff on top. Our server was fabulous as well! We visited last week with a group of six. We all started drinks and a few of us especially enjoyed the cocktails. My smoked old fashioned was the best I have had! We tried the new cheese curds which were delicious!! Everyone enjoyed their meals the pork chop and chicken was especially very good!! Looking forward to going back to try more meals. My sister and I were intrigued by the menu, so we decided to try 3 entrees: Pan Fried Walleye, Pan Roasted Chicken Breast and the special of the day. Each were unique in presentation and flavors, and each was a delight! I highly recommend this restaurant for the quality of the food, taste, presentation and the friendly service. And the coffee has its own flavor and story. I enjoyed everything and want more!! Within a week my sister returned with friends and now I have returned with friends. Great new restaurant in Hudson! Our party of four ordered the schnitzel sandwich, bistro burger, duck and pan roasted chicken breast, along with a gem salad and bowl of mushroom soup. All was excellent! My brother-in-law raved about the mushroom soup. The gem salad was delicious--the lemon dressing light and refreshing. The sandwiches were served with a very generous side of fries which were hard to stop eating. Our server was friendly and our food arrived at our table hot and beautifully prepared. For starters. I have a sincere appreciation for cooking, food, local spots, and fine cuisine. I cannot explain how sincerely I will never come back here. The ONLY reason for 1 star was because the service and wait staff were exceptional, otherwise, this would be a 0. I am taking into account that this is a new and relatively under marketed spot. With an apparently seasoned chef though, I must say, I expected so much more from a menu and the food itself. We were greeted immediately and sat right away. Which, actually, is a red flag if you're downtown Hudson on a Friday night at 6:30 PM and there's only 2 tables with customers at them in the entire place, especially for a new spot. The bar was empty. The restaurant was empty. The decor was so flat and also empty. I will chalk that last one up to being a new spot though and that can take time. The employees were begging for something to do. They were. So. Bored. That poor bartender must have cleaned those glasses 15 times while I was there. After we were sat, we were promptly waited on. The service was outstanding. The person I was with ordered a Caesar salad, which was decent. But there was not much of a trace of traditional Caesar salad as it was a lighter and fresher take on it. Again, I understand that but it was too far on that side of the aisle for me. Still not that bad though. I ordered the mushroom soup. Which had elements for certain of Winzerstube's. It really lacked depth though and needed a pinch more salt. There were no salt or pepper shakers to be found on the table. Winzerstube did serve theirs with crackers which was a nice touch to that soup for the flavor profile. The entree was nothing short of terrible. I am so disappointed. The person I was with got the walleye. The aioli served with it was good. The vegetables looked like they were just made from a bag of frozen birdeye. The walleye resembled 2 fish sticks with absolutely zero flavor. It was honestly not an attractive plating on a side note. But even with the vegetables and aioli on the bite with the walleye, it was so incredibly bland. The portions were overly small in comparison to the price, even if it is a small plate fine dining type. I ordered the flank steak which was ordered medium rare. It was cooked to order. But they absolutely destroyed it with a cumin based oil. Maybe a take on a chimichurri, but I mean the ONLY thing I could taste was cumin and salt and it was thick in the steak. Made for a really unpleasant bite at times. It was awful. It was maybe a few oz of meat pushed way off to the side of a plate then the rest of the full size dinner plate was covered in over salted French fries soaked in the cumin oil. If this is ever they referred to as "cafe steak sauce," that's pretty confusing as most dishes aren't 1 part meat to 1 part steak sauce. This whole bill was pushing 100 dollars after tip for both of us. We ordered no drinks besides 1 diet coke, as the food needs to speak for itself at places like this. So overpriced for the quality of the food. I would love a rustic fine dining spot in Hudson to break up what we already have. This is really, really not it. read more
