What an adventure! When you turn off the main road and head to Black Sage your adventure begins! Traveling about 3 or 3.5 miles down a dirt, slightly gravel road heading to the restaurant is hilarious especially if you have never been there before. You think am I going right? You and your party are either worried or laughing! We were laughing because it's very typical for me to be off the beaten path. The scenery is beautiful and you will be headed in the right direction to Blake Sage. Upon arriving you are greeted by JT, your host. A very handsome and friendly man! He will tell you a little about the gem and then take you to the small intimate restaurant that has beautiful views of the rocks. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic with a touch of rustic. The atmosphere is perfect! Then your server will appear and I am so disappointed that I cannot remember his name because he was just as fabulous as JT. We both ordered the meatloaf. I would have never ordered the meatloaf but my daughter had eaten there and highly recommended I try the delicious dish. I am so very happy that I did because it was the best meatloaf I have ever eaten!! It tasted more like a steak. All fresh and wrapped in bacon, yummy!! The mashed potatoes and turnips accompanied by a mild sauce was the perfect combination for my meal! They only serve wine and beer. I am a wine lover so I was fine with the wine selection. I don't know about the beer selection. Most everything is by the bottle and our wine was very good! When we left the restaurant we stopped and got out of the car and just looked up at the stars. The sky was full of stars and it was the perfect ending to a very memorable experience! I highly recommend trying Black Sage. It's very affordable as well!

A true culinary experience. From driving on a dirt road to get to the restaurant, being escorted under the stars to get to the dining room, being seated in a nicely lit cozy table to devouring chef's creations. The whole experience was just amazing. One person was running the whole dining area so he was busy but he still managed to provide good service. My only complaint is that they didn't have coffee or tea. I can not not have tea with my dessert to I took my dessert back to the hotel. I highly highly recommend this restaurant.

After 5 days in Zion, this was our last dinner of the trip....and it was a wonderful way to end. It is small, so a reservation is advised. This place is off the beaten path, hard to find, but worth the extra effort it took to get here. Atmosphere was lovely. We ate outdoors, with a beautiful view. The decor is simple - all wood and black. Simple, yet elegant. The indoor dining room looked tucked away and didn't seem to offer as nice of a dining experience as the outdoors...but that's just me assuming after seeing it. Their service was good. Not great, but friendly. Felt a bit rushed. The food was good. I loved my chicken dish (which the server confirmed could be made gluten free). The risotto and mushrooms that came with it were amazing! My husband had the shrimp and grits and we were all taken aback at the small serving size compared to the rest of our dinners. He enjoyed it, but added on a salad since he was still hungry. Our friends got the meatloaf (she said it was "ok" and the other got the chicken friend steak, which he also said was underwhelming. Thus only the 4 stars. Dessert was great - our friends enjoyed the carrot cake and the cheesecake was delicious and gluten free! A rare treat. I was craving a cup of decaf coffee with dessert, but they didn't have any. Maybe we hit it on an off night with the food - but overall we all enjoyed ourselves and agreed we'd be back again!

If you are heading out to Zion it's a sure bet that you are looking for adventure in the great outdoors - hiking, biking, canyoneering/climbing - Zion has it all. Zion also has plenty of great options for dining and lodging. The easy route is to stay in Springdale and then walk to any of the many eateries. However, if you really want to have a great meal that is an experience in and of itself, you must book a table at Black Sage - or, better yet, stay at the "off the grid luxury glamping" at Open Sky, which is where Black Sage is located. Executive Chef Charles Parcell (formerly Executive Sous Chef at Switchback Grille) is the creative mastermind behind the menu at Black Sage. Chef works out of a tiny kitchen and produces a culinary experience that reflects the beautiful surroundings. Black Sage is a farm to table concept that serves diners locally sourced ingredients (the apple cheesecake and Airline Chicken were made with apples picked right on the property) in a setting that is akin to camping under the stars (fancy camping anyway). The restaurant is located deep in the red rock canyons down a very long dirt road. Seclusion is part of the charm - it's easy to forget that you are minutes away from the hub bub in Springdale. Like most "experience" restaurants, it is difficult to describe exactly what makes this place a must do when visiting Zion. We visited with a group of 11, ages 12 to 82! Everyone loved it. We were Zion casual and felt just right. The food is expensive - but the restaurant is not stuffy. We spent about $80 per person and tried a very wide variety of items - all got a solid review. Favorites - the Airline Chicken, the Burger, the Trout and the Chicken Fried Steak. The sourdough pretzel appetizer was worth the trip by itself! The fish cakes and fried green tomatoes were excellent. For desert we go the s'mores tart (a big hit), olive oil cake (excellent), apple cheesecake and crème brûlée (both delicious). Our server was the best. I forgot her name - but she drives 90 minutes to work at the restaurant because she loves it, and it shows. We can't wait to go back and will do our best to stay at Open Sky this time!

Delicious food and on point atmosphere. Seriously, this is a gem in the Zion area. I tried the burger, pasta, meatloaf, halibut and nachos and they were all excellent. Pair this with a Whole Guacamole hike at sunset and you'll have an unforgettable evening.

This restaurant is very unique, you go through a few miles of dirt road to the middle of nowhere. You drive by a pistachio orchard and I can imagine that a later dinner reservation would be the highlight of the dining experience due to the open sky dining area. The stars would be incredible here. The service was great, our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Our group ordered a charcuterie board, shiitake mushrooms and the pretzel board. All were delicious and I didn't get a chance to take a picture. I ordered the bolognese and it was the best bolognese I've ever had. All the food tasted and looked fresh. I highly recommend locals to visit for a special date or a family get together, it's so nice to have an amazing experience so close. You don't need to go out of state to feel like you're on vacation.

Black Sage may just serve the best food in all of Southern Utah! I've visited three times now and each meal has been outstanding. Keith, our server, is fantastic--honest and knowledgeable, always giving spot-on recommendations. The smoked meatloaf has become my go-to, but during my last visit, I ventured to the seasonal menu and tried the chicken-fried steak which did not disappoint. Every dish I've had has been packed with flavor, unique and perfectly cooked. Although you'll need to take a 10-minute drive down a dirt road to get there the food is well worth the journey. If you're anywhere near the Zion area make sure to stop by. Probably good to make reservations too.

The entrance

The place is a little sketchy to get to but I think it adds to the vibes. It's a cute metal conex box and everything in its surroundings is under construction. The service was abysmally slow but it wasn't the servers fault. He was the only one there. The food tasted okay but our stomachs were in absolute shambles after. I'm not sure what was going on with the food but it took an eternity and was lukewarm upon arrival. Not sure if it's the quality of ingredients either but overall disappointing. They did give us a little discount for it taking too long and that's the only reason they don't have one star.

In one word amazing!!!!!! Yes the food was that good. We dined here last night in conjunction with our arrival to Open Sky. I have rarely had the perfect meal. This is one of those times. The perfect meal! From the Elote Eggroles to the Gnocchi special. The gnocchi plate layered a cream corn polenta base topped with bacon cut in the perfectly sized cubes of deliciousness than topped with a fried gnocchi. Oh and wait to my husband's burger. Insanely delicious. The fries that accompanied the burger were the best fries I've had ever!!!! I mean that ever!!! The black cherry cream craft soda was soo good. We chose to eat inside. It was nice with the ac going. It's a small space but simple and comfortable. The star that stole the show was their chef!!!! Such a nice southwest infused take on farm to table food fit for a discriminating foodie.

I wish I could give 6 stars because this was a dunking experience above the rest. NOTE: 1. Make a reservation 2. You will have to drive on an unpaved road to get there, so be careful. 3. We ate inside and I would recommend that if mosquitoes like you. The view is still spectacular. The food was PHENOMENAL. Pasta like I've never had it; it had to be freshly made there. The Trout cakes were flavorful, moist, but held their shape; they were better than any crab cake (and I adore crab). The server was kind and accommodating. It was a dining experience in the midst of the most beautiful scenery (watch the video). I would return time and time again.

Very flavorful, proteins were moist and tender, salsas and sides were fresh. The service was great. Side note - Try the hot sauce! VERY flavorful with a little kick. I typically only like hot sauces that have flavor and aren't just spicy. Drinks are dumb cheap. In all, would definitely return and would definitely recommend!

The…read morerestaurant has an older bar-style ambiance, which may appeal to some, but the food did not live up to the reviews we had seen. We started with the chips, salsa, and queso. One thing to note is that the chips and salsa are ordered separately, and the queso is an added extra charge on top of that. For our meals, we ordered the special swordfish taco and the carne asada tacos. Both proteins lacked flavor and were heavily covered with pineapple salsa, which overpowered everything else. The tacos themselves were very bland and desperately needed salt. Once we added salt, they became much more enjoyable. The same went for the rice and beans -- both were pretty flavorless until seasoned. The highlight of our experience was Jimenez (Hopefully I'm spelling his name correctly) who did a great job handling a very busy bar section. Service was attentive despite how packed it was, and we appreciated that. Overall, the food just did not meet expectations, especially for the price point. Sadly, Bit & Spur would be a hard pass for us if we return to Springdale.

This was such a great find on our recent trip…read more We got a fantastic table on their charming patio later in the afternoon and it was just perfect. Our choice over two evenings (one being takeout as we weren't staying at the connected hotel were: Steak tartare (I don't enjoy eggs and they accommodated this by putting them in the side) Spanish octopus Golden beets carpaccio Bolognese with the golden trio of meat blend Duck confit cassoulet Pork chop Honestly, I would order any single one of these again without hesitation. Everything component belonged on each dish, and pleasant to eat separately or piled on the fork as one mouthful. (Also appreciated when getting our takeout order that chef referred to cutlery as cutlery - rare in the US - specially when plastic takeout) Don't miss this on your Zion trip, and definitely worth going out of the way for!

My husband is a meatloaf lover, so he got the bacon wrap meatloaf. He said it was just OK, the appearance was amazing in a little tower, but it really needed a sauce on it. It was kind of dry. he ordered some gravy to go on top and our waiter brought him out some and that made all the difference. Could also just be how we're used to eating meatloaf and my husband thinks every meat has to have a sauce. Lol He also got the French onion soup and thought it was absolutely amazing and scarfed down every bite of it. That was recommended to us by the waiter as one of his favorites. I got the filet mignon and chose to top it with truffle butter, I was not disappointed. It was cooked perfectly, nice and lean, and the truffle butter was done just right not over the top, paired perfectly with the steak. I would highly recommend that. We got the calamari which was nicely battered (lightly) It was cooked correctly, and they even added fried okra in with the pepper mix. That was something unique to me, but it actually paired perfectly and I really enjoyed it. The aïoli that came with it was delightful as well. So overall, we would definitely recommend this. It is nice on the inside, but I wouldn't say upscale suit and tie kind of place, I did feel a little out of place walking in there and hiking boots and sweat though.

It came out rare, with zero crust. We didn't send it back- once you've cut into an expensive steak, putting it back on the grill feels like adding insult to injury. They claim the wine list is extensive- it is if you consider the Costco wine isle extensive. Mass produced and uninspired. The Muzak they play was funny.. Yes, actual elevator Muzak- and at one point it treated us to a full instrumental version of "Pour Some Sugar on Me." It was the highlight of the meal. To be fair, our server JT was great- attentive and genuinely nice. Not his fault the kitchen couldn't deliver.
