Nice atmosphere as you walk in. Seems like they expect you to have a reservation. So busy place maybe call and make a reservation. We were seated promptly as a party of two. Great service. Very cold inside. I wore my snow coat the entire time a breeze blowing and I could see others shivering. My husband had the Buffalo nickel burger. He loved it even though he asked for medium well and it was barely medium. Great rosemary fries too. I had the green chile pork Navajo tacos. The green chile was great. The Navajo taco was SOGGY. I came here just for these and it was a huge disappointment. I've made Navajo tacos many times before and had them on the Navajo reservation as I'm from Arizona. And never had them served as a soggy bottom. Only the most exterior of it was not soggy. I feel like they made the taco and it sat while the burger cooked. It has been a long time since I last visited Black Sheep Café. Probably, four or five years. That was too long. My wife and I went and had a wonderful time. The service coming in the door was slow, but my party of two got our food very quickly! The menu had a mix of Native American and Mexican foods. I got the green chili stew with a side of fried bread, which was 7.5/10 tasty. The ambiance was fun and the waitress was attentive. I've been here twice now about a decade apart and I wasn't super pleased on either visit. I can't remember the details of the first visit so I'll focus on the more recent. I wasn't terribly hungry so I opted for an appetizer: filet mignon bruschetta. That name is... misleading. The ingredients listed on the menu made clear that it wasn't like a traditional bruschetta in some essential ways, but the term does connote something other than "on bread" which is how this restaurant seemed to interpret it. What I received ended up being something like Shepherd's pie (mashed potato, sautéed mirepoix, and little scraps of what was supposedly filet mignon) on a thick piece of bread that I'd guess spent 2 seconds a side on a grill. Such a promising name but what was put in front of me did not live up to it. I also got a mojito which was fresh and tasty if light on the rum (#Utah) and service was pleasant and handled our larger party well. The other people at my table seemed happy with their meals which definitely looked a lot more appealing than mine so perhaps I just made a bad choice. Either way, I'm not choosing to go back to Black Sheep and can't really recommend it. read more

Great experience at this gem of a restaurant in Provo. The menu is creative and portions were generous. We got the Traditional Navajo tacos and Green Chili stew which both had the braised pork cooked to perfection. The small space is filled with modern art and blown glass fixtures surrounded by large windows all creating a warm ambiance. The service was outstanding from the hostess who warmly greeted us to our friendly experienced server. We had a reservation which is recommended because all tables were nearly full and others were asked to wait to be seated on a Thursday evening. read more

Just had lunch here with my wife. I was a little irked that Communal was closed, but Black Sheep Cafe is a great alternative and wonderful place to dine. Let me tell you why: -The Black Sheep Burger. Do not expect the traditional hamburger bun here. The beef patty is topped with cheese, fresh vegetables, and is wrapped in a Southwestern style flatbread and comes with an extremely fragrant and tasty orange dipping sauce (good with the sweet potato fries too). It is a huge, even for someone who considers him or herself a food glutton. -Steak Tacos. My favorite, and what appears to be a newer item because no previous reviews have mentioned them. They come out super hot. The beef are almost like small filet mignon cuts: they are tender, juicy, and complement the taco tortilla, sweet mesquite onions, and the veggie toppings. Rice and beans sides were also excellent. -Closing: great place to dine--high food quality and employees go the extra effort to make you comfortable. If you're going during lunch time, I highly recommend making a reservation around 11:00 for your noon/afternoon lunch, to avoid 20-25 min. wait times. read more

A terrific Native American restaurant, with a unique twist on American and Spanish dishes. We made sure to try the Green Chili Frites to start off. The Cactus Pear Moscow Mule is phenomenal. A delicious cocktail, with a hint of cactus. The bison used on the burgers is like no other meat I've experienced. The BBQ sauce used on the burger had a hint of maple, another distinct taste to this truly exceptional meal. Three choices of fries, but the rosemary were extra tasty. I came here with some friends and I have been wanting to try this place for a while! The inside was really pretty and warm and inviting. The staff were great! They were friendly, smiled, personal and offered some great suggestions. Our server was even going to bring me a small side of mashed potatoes because she couldn't describe the flavor. She was an amazing waitress! I got the BBQ Bacon Buffalo Bisen Burger and sweet potatoe fries. Both were trait l really delicious. The fries were great and crispy but soft as well in the right combination. The burger was delicious and full of flavor as well. However, I don't like the fact that an entire onion slice was on it. I had to remove most of it. I also think it needed more sauce. Maybe it's a bit overrated? I also think the price was a bit high but I would come back here for the staff. I hate writing a review based off a to go order but they didn't have any slots open on yelp reservations so it was my only option. I have heard rave reviews about their green chili stew and on a chilly night like tonight I thought it would be perfect. And I hope tonight was just a fluke but the portion size I got for the amount of money I paid was pretty disappointing. It was in a smaller plastic container, I guess I was expecting a little more. I got two good size pieces of pork and that's it. We got some carrots but there weren't any potatoes like the menu online said. I asked for the cheese on the side cause I knew if I didn't the cheese would just end up clumped in the middle of the soup and that's exactly what happened. Hoping this is just a to go fluke and maybe if we ever go as sit down the experience will be better. The highlight was definitely the fry bed! Delicious! read more

Came here with coworkers cause it had great reviews. And the place did not disappointed! It was full (surprise for us, on a Wednesday night) but the service wasn't that slow. We ordered some appetizers (Navajo frybread and filet mignon bruschetta) and they were both good. My coworkers orderered the hanger steak and I had the black sheep salad. We were all happy with our choices! Then we split a dessert (brownie) it was good, I just wish the brownie itself was warmer. Great mix of flavors. The only downside of the whole experience is that we couldn't get separate checks -we need them for our expense report- and all the waitress could do its split the check three ways. Oh! And also we don't get a copy of the check. Love the food and atmosphere here! It's a little more expensive than other restaurants in the area but the food is all delicious. It's a super fun spot for a date night! Be sure to call ahead because there can be a wait, especially on weekends. My go-to is the Hog Jowl Tacos. SO good. They're a little on the sweeter side but have a nice kick to them with the jalapeño. Highly recommend! The Lavender Frybread is classic and always yummy! I think the Black Sheep Cafe is the best restaurant in Provo by far. But, only if you have a genuine appreciation for native southwest recipes, flavors and traditions. Big fat Americans like me LOVE a lot of salt in their meats and sauces. But native southwest cultures didn't use a ton of salt to preserve or season food. They used the sun to dry and preserve. And they used drought tolerant veggies, like chiles, to flavor their food since salt in these areas was rare in comparison to coastal areas. Nowadays the "Mexican Food" that a lot of North Americans have come to love, like Tex-Mex, has evolved to include a ton of salt. Along with tons of (also salty) cheddar and jack cheeses. Delicious and comforting for sure. But the founders of the Black Sheep Cafe built their restaurant on the value of traditional native approaches and flavors. Food at the Black Sheep highlights native ingredients like braised pork, chiles and corn. But even though native food isn't typically supposed to be salty, some North American yelpers still complain that it's too bland. (Sorry your meal doesn't taste like your favorite salt lick from Burrito King back in Indiana, Chad.) Anyway, a few of my favorites on the menu: Try the Pozole. You can actually taste the native hominy. The broth is layered, rich and smooth but doesn't overpower the other ingredients. You can actually distinguish the different types of chiles in the recipe. And the braised pork is tender but not mushy (which is what happens when you over-salt pork). Goat cheese became a staple ingredient in southern Utah and central Arizona centuries ago. It's delicious. But natural goat cheeses made without wax or other additives are hard to make into creamy, smooth, heated sauces. And yet the version of Goat Cheese Queso at Black Sheep is incredibly smooth and it doesn't separate after a few minutes on the table. I've been a fan of the Black Sheep since it opened years ago. I come here every time I'm in town. And I understand the restaurant is now managed by the decedents of the founding owners. Have some corners been cut in the wake of Covid supply and labor supply issues? Has the culinary pendulum swung a little to far in the "Fusion" direction on some of their seasonal dishes lately? Maybe so. But I don't think a single restaurant in Utah could claim otherwise. So, to sum up, if you are looking for a huge burrito full of salty beef and processed cheese, go to Los Hermanos. But if you are interested in a meal that's based in native tradition and served with style, go to the Black Sheep. Yum. read more

Absolutely loved this Native American restaurant. It was such a lovely location, situated right in the action of Provo's main stretch. The staff was kind and accommodating. You absolutely MUST try the fry bread with lavender and honey. Unique and delicious. For my main course I got Navajo tacos. They were fresh and yummy, but honestly didn't strike me as anything revolutionary. Overall, would definitely recommend stopping at this spot. I could drive an hour from Salt Lake City just to eat their pozole! This place is a great option to lunch or dine.

After improv, we walked over for dinner with visiting fam from outta town. We had never tried Native American cuisine (that I can recall, at least), and the menu and venue looked perfect for what we were looking for. It was pretty busy when we got there on a weekday evening, so we put our name in for four. The wait was quoted 25mins, so we told them we were going to walk around the corner to ABG's Bar until they called us (they confirmed they would when the table was ready). After a half hour, I had yet to receive a call, so I called Black Sheep to see if our table was ready yet. The host who put our names down apologized and said, yes... it sounded like they forgot about us which was a bummer, but I'm glad I called before our party got too hangry. Luckily ABG bided our time with some strong, cheap drinks. We walked back over and were sat right away. Love the ambiance and vibes in Black Sheep. It's lively and the decor is something to stare at. Our server, Nick, was very friendly and attentive throughout. We got some drinks, but I cannot recall the names, and they're not listed on their website. We also got a good bottle of wine to share and another to take home. The mixed drinks were refreshingly delicious, and we got a good lil' buzz! The Blue's Fire Shrimp app was really good, but just FYI, it only comes with TWO shrimp. For an appetizer, this is laughable. We asked Nick if this was normal, and he said yes, but brought us out more shrimp and did not charge us for it. My BF got the traditional Navajo Tacos with Green Chili Pork. I really loved the fry bread that it's served on -- probably best eaten with a fork rather than a typical taco hold. I think my fave dish was the Black Sheep Wedge, but that was probably because I was wanting a fresh as opposed to heavy dish. We closed the place down at the end of the night, enjoying each other's company. Despite the host mix-up, it was an excellent meal and experience. The service here is really good for small town Provo. It's classy and upscale, with reasonable prices for the quality of food. The portion sizes are pretty good, but could potentially be on the smaller side depending on what you order and what you are accustomed to with the price point. From what I remember, dinner portions are a bit larger than lunch and costs a bit more too. I've had the green Chile pork Navajo taco and bbq buffalo burger before as dinner entrees, and the burger is definitely much larger and more filling than the Navajo taco. The sweet potato fries are extremely filling and thick-- I would recommend them for the delicious seasoning they put on it, as well as the unique fry sauce they give on the side. As far as drinks go, we tried the mojito and prickly pear margarita. Both were delicious and went well with the meal. While we didn't try the green Chile stew, we overheard the waitress tell the couple next to us that this dish is the owner's favorite. I'll have to try it the next time I go there. read more

This was one of the best burgers I've ever had! I've heard a lot of great things about Black Sheep, and let me tell ya, they're all true! Yes, it's expensive and isn't a place I can come just anytime... But the Buffalo Nickel Burger was so good that I was ok spending $20 on it! Not to mention the Sweet Potato Wedges--seasoned perfectly and so yummy! Here's what else I love about Black Sheep: I have a friend who started a nonprofit organization to help with Native American health, and he needed to do a fundraiser to help cover costs. The owner of Black Sheep allowed him to advertise a fundraiser at the restaurant where a good portion of their earnings one night would be donated! I love a business that is willing to help others out and it made my experience better knowing that I was supporting a good cause. The atmosphere here is very enjoyable and I like that it's located near Center Street. Even though you'll likely need to park a block or so away, it's a fun area to walk around and I didn't mind it at all. I came to this restaurant for lunch and ordered the daily special nachos as an appetiser. I've been super excited to try out this restaurant due to their aesthetic atmosphere. Must I say, the appetiser definitely didn't disappoint! The pork on this was sooo good. The pork was extremely tender. Moreover, the flavours all complemented each other super well, and came in such a big bowl! For my main dish, I ordered a BBQ Navajo taco. I didn't like the taste as it tasted quite bitter and had a very strong flavour due to their spices. However, the taco fry bread itself was quite nice, as it was very light. We went out here for my Birthday & it was a great time! Super cute little flowers on the tables, blown glass art & poinsettias for the decor. Staff was super nice. We got in for a quick supper before a reservation which worked out perfectly. We both loved our salads the most! We got the Bruschetta appetizer- which is definitely their own play on it- has mashed potatoes on the bread- unique- but probably wouldn't order again. I got the cactus margarita, which was good but also $13 for a small glass. Husband's beer was really good for $6 though! Dessert was good- the chili threads were interesting, didn't make the dish taste spicy, but had a warming effect after eating you could feel. Overall good experience!
