I read some of the not so nice earlier reviews. I can attest this place is awesome. I've not experienced any racism at all. Besides, every time I go there are visibly different ethnicities. The food is yummy. My fave is the Shepard's pie. Sometimes it can take a minute to get the food, but well worth the wait. Overall, what makes this place awesome is the customer service. If I could use one word to describe Black Watch Pub, I would say "janky." Unfortunately, that's not a universally known word. It means freaking ghetto, beat up, run down, I'm gone get stabbed. If I'm not mistaken, this bar lets you smoke inside. I think I saw a pregnant woman here? I attended a Western University of Health Sciences inter-professional night where there medical and dental students. It was energetic, packed, had two (that's right, not one) DJ's spinning hot beats. They only have beer on tap so if you want any mixed or girlie drinks, you may have to get drunk elsewhere. It got kind of cramped and I wouldn't come here if I just wanted to relax and have a beer with a friend. People were having fun though and it was a Monday night. It's good to let your hair down some times. The men's restroom is terrible here. No napkins, no soap, no toilet seat covers. I might as well just piss myself and be as equally clean. I would only come here if there were a big event and I wanted to potentially mingle and get turned down. read more

My wife and I went here on a Sunday about 11am and there was nobody else in the place: Red Flag #1. We were greeted and sat down at a table and ordered 2 Bloody Marys. The bartender/hostess told us they weren't a full bar and could make a Bloody Mary but only with an impostor vodka. We said ok but our drinks tasted like they'd been scooped out of the toilet: Red Flag #2. We ordered food and it took about 45 minutes for it to arrive: Red Flag #3. Our food was delivered to us by a gentleman with his fly open: Red Flag #4. Then I ordered a Coke and it was brought to me in a can with a glass with no ice. I had to go up to the bar and ask to have ice put into my glass. Red Flag #5. 5 is my limit for Red Flags so we vowed never to go here again :( read more

This place is great. And by great, I mean trashy-great. And by trashy-great, I mean it is a total dive bar that has no pretensions of joining the modern era of cleanliness or bar regulation. I have been drinking in the Black Watch intermittently for about fourteen years, ever since my sophomore year of college. I have been thrown out for fighting twice, carried out at least once, and have smoked several cartons of cigarettes in there over the years. The staff there are awesome, the pool table is only moderately hilly, and the beer is cheap. This place is really close to the Claremont Colleges, and is generally filled with a pretty hilarious mixture of drunk hipster college kids and older locals that obviously hate them. At the Black Watch, they let you do your thing-- you can go up and say, "Hey, my friend just was trying to catch the darts while we were playing cricket, and is now bleeding all over your floor. Can I get two more pitchers, some paper towels, and some tape?" and they will get what you asked for and not blink an eye. The Black Watch also has a hilarious bathroom situation, where one of the bathrooms (I would say the Women's, but they both seem to turn unisex after about 11) have two toilets facing each other with no divider of any sort. I am not sure what type of faceoff these visionaries saw going down in there, but whatever it is, it is not a game that I want to play. No one wins at that game. All in all, I give this place five stars, because times may change, and trends (or laws) may come and go, but at the Black Watch, they just don't care. You are true patriots, whoever you might be, and I look forward to my next misadventure at your fine establishment. read more

Hello everyone, this review reflects the service I received tonight, 6/30/18. I have been a long time customer and fan of the Black Watch Pub, affectionately calling it the Pub for many years. I realize bartenders come and go, I was treated horribly when asked for a sample taste of the Kilt Lifter. One of the bartenders, I was told her name was Kara, got upset at my asking for a taste, to the point of nastyness and beyond belief rudeness. If it is the businesses policy to not allow a taste before purchase then she should have said so, instead of getting upset and nasty. Nice lil neighborhood Pub, went in on March 17th at noon. That's right St Paddy's Day, not crowded or loud. A very laid back vibe, my son and I ordered a Guinness that's why we stopped in. If this is a traditional Irish Pub, I like it. Some Guinness Girls showed up and gave out free beads and Green Guinness Beer Tee Shirts, nice touch guys. Black Watch has been a college and hipster favorite forever. Bands Play there. cool area bands. They cater to the drinking and smoking set. it is an English pub. True Pub Style environment. Came here on a Sunday- just a few people in the place. We weren't greeted when we came in, so we just seated ourselves. Mediocre beer selection. Asked the waitress a few questions about the menu items, and she admitted that some items are frozen and heated... sign outside says authentic British food. There was a piece of foil in my food. However, we were offered two credits on the jukebox after some technical difficulties were solved with it which was cool, but were given the stink eye from some hipsters after I apparently didn't pick a cool enough song for them. I went here to watch the USA v UK World cup match and had an absolute blast. It's a cut above as dive bar's go. Great crowd, pleasant helpful staff, reasonably cheep beers with a good selection on tap. I didn't try any of the food, but it at least looked appetizing . I first came here about a year ago to check out the Black Watch Pub, and I wasn't too impressed. But I figured I should give it another shot because I live across the street. I'm really, really glad I did. Service is excellent. On a weekday, I come in for a beer, and the bartender, Crystal, is so friendly and energetic that I actually stay for 2 or 3. I guess she started working here recently, but she gives the place a great atmosphere. I am always greeted when I come in, and when I leave, she always says thanks for stopping in. It's small acts like these that make a huge difference for me. Seeing as she works simultaneously as a bartender, server, busser, and hostess, it makes me wonder how other restaurants fail to achieve this level of service with dedicated positions. Weekends are usually a lot of fun too. The bands can be hit or miss, but they usually surpass expectations. I'm pretty satisfied with the other forms of entertainment too - lots of darts, a pool table, and a jukebox. It's not a huge place, but they make good use of the space. I'm not a sports fan, but they do have multiple TV's and a projector, so this is a great place to catch the game and enjoy some beer. As for the food, I love the fish and chips. I never really enjoyed this classic dish until I came here. The soup and sandwich combo is also a pretty good deal. Joseph, the cook, is the man. Sometimes he even cooks up things off the menu. The beer selection could be better, but it does have a decent variety for a bar that serves mostly bud light. I can usually find something on rotation that suits my needs. I would love it if they had at least one sour beer, especially if it's from the Bruery. Overall, I've recently had great experiences here, and if you're thinking of trying a new pub or haven't been here in awhile, then I highly recommend Black Watch. read more

I enjoy having beer and watching futbol, occasionally in the morning. Location: Nice spot in a business plaza on the corner of Central and Arrow Route. Atmosphere: really chill. They have all these cool signs on the wall, and the arrangement of the place is nice. They have darts and pool in one area, the bar in the middle, and tables on the other end. I believe they have live bands, but have yet to be there to see one. Definitely reminds me of a pub. Food: Food items here are great. Usually I get the beer battered fish and chips. I only wish they served late night. But they have snacks as well. As many other places, they have a wonderful selection of beef jerky which is made by them. Ranges from delicious to spicy, although I have not yet encountered a beef jerky which is spicy enough for me. They have a fine selection of beer. I hang with Guinness all day, Newcastle and Boddingtons. Service: Excellent service. no complaint. Bartenders and staff are friendly. Sanitation: Its a Pub. I am a fan on the real dart boards they have here, they definitely keep it true to what you would think a pub should be. So we hit up Black Watch for my friend's birthday at like 9 PM on a Sunday. It's cool, because that's where we'd go to drink a beer (her) and a hard cider (me) after my serving job (read: after 11 PM) while while smoking a few cloves to relax back before they were banned from the U.S. market. That should tell you that 1) this place is a dive and 2) they operate to please the less-than-legal crowd as you cannot smoke indoors in California. Black Watch is meant for people who want to hang, sling back a pint or pitcher of whatever import is cheapest while smoking and playing darts or billiards. They have a few tasty hard ciders both on tap and by bottle as well as standard domestics and import beers. That's right -- there is no hard liquor here, only beer. The bartenders are friendly enough but mostly leave you to drink, smoke and play in peace. It can get loud -- lots of English and Irish punk and rock on the jukebox -- but it's a fun, if a little grimy, hole in the wall. But hey, they at least had "True Blood" on the TVs when I was there. Oh, and there are indeed two perpendicular toilets in the ladies loo. Why? Because we always go in pairs anyway, why not make the trip efficient in plain view of each other? This place definitely fills the purpose I have for it, which is to get out of the house, grab a beer and watch an EPL game or World Cup or Euro Cup games when the come around. There's usually a pretty good small group of people for games which makes watching it that much more fun. Back during the World Cup final, this place was packed. They have a couple of TVs mounted at each end of the bar, which makes watching simultaneous played games that much easier. They also have a projector (I believe it is) on one blank wall for viewing in the dining area. Sure, its pretty no frills service and decor wise, but you have to appreciate it for what it is, which is basically just a laid back, come as you are pub. If you don't like it, then get the heck out. They have a good selection of quality beers on tap and from what I remember less than $5 for a craft type beer is pretty good in my opinion. In addition, the food is pretty good, not amazing, but certainly satisfying. My favorite is the sausage, eggs and chips with toast and beans. The sausage is actually one of the standouts cooked perfectly so its still nice and juicy in the middle. For those that are sensitive to it, they are a little loose on their no smoking rules, but I've never noticed more than one or two people at a time. Most people have the decency to go outside during halftime and such. Me, I don't care much and it just adds to the character of this funky little place. read more

As weird as this sounds, its nice to chill in a really loud dive bar. We just relax, have a few drinks, and talk about random stuff. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but my co-workers who are like the selection. I usually drink the cider here as it is pretty good. Don't expect any hard liquor, because they don't have any here. Pretty smoky and not too many beers on tap. That said, I'm still a fan of this dive-y little place. I like a couple of their beers on tap, and they even have Stone beers in bottles. The 90's cover band 90 Proof plays at this joint pretty often, and that's enough to make me come here. There are also pool tables and dart boards to keep you entertained. I love this bar, the bar tenders are friendly the customers are generally pretty friendly but I had to stop going because of all the people smoking inside. My husband and I have come here for close to 5 years. Awesome drinks, great food and wonderful service. We've recently started to come for ALL dodger games with our family (go Dodgers!). Typically there are between 8-12 of us, and we've always been treated well. Occasionally it gets busy and hectic, but never to the point it becomes a problem. This is my favorite pub. Lots of different Irish beer. Mostly older people in here. All the locals and regulars come that sort of place.
