Like the location and excitement around this place it appears very inviting and casual. However the service needs significant improvement at the bar. Our bar tender didn't even ask us to taste the wine before pouring a glass each for us. Also the oysters were pretty lackluster in taste and presentation. Its pricey for what you get and when you step inside its actually not as great as it appears from outside. I wish the Management my best but not sure ill return given its a competitive area and plentiful choices at my disposal. read more

Made reservations at the Chef's Table for a Birthday and it was an amazing experience! The Chef's Table is set up right next to the kitchen and you get to watch Chef Doherty prepare the extravagant set-menu. The food was innovative and perfectly proportioned for 5 meals. You can also get the set menu with wine pairings with the help of the restaurant sommelier. It could not have been more of a perfect night and it would not have been the same without Chef Doherty's help! Highly recommend the Black Barn. read more

Our waiter Demetri was inattentive and when he charged us for coffee that was included and we asked him to take it off, he mumbled "like you can't afford it" under his breath as he walked away. Extremely disappointed. My family ate here for Thanksgiving dinner. It took over 1.5 hours to get our appetizers and 2 hours to get our dinner. I spoke with the Manager twice, and each time I was told that the restaurant was overwhelmed and there was nothing they could do. I informed the Manager that our food was ice cold and rather than offering to correct the problem, she argued with me and told me she saw them take the food out of the oven--to which I responded by saying that she is more than welcome to come and try the ice cold food herself. I went for Valentine's dinner. The meal had both hits and misses. The service was good. The bread was fantastic. The bread pudding was also fantastic. Everything else was fine without any true standouts except for the gnocchi that accompanied the chicken. That was truly awful and had no business being called gnocchi. My dining partner also found it to be awful. (Enough so that it tainted our take on the meal.) Whoever is baking the bread, should be commended. i had my bridal shower at the Black Barn (specifically its loft space) and it is ideal for private event. Devin made planning extremely easy. The service, food, and decor was simply perfect, the guests could not have had nicer things to say. Anthony, D'mitri and Christine were absolutely wonderful to work with and made everything run so smoothly the day of. I would highly recommend the Black Barn for any private party. Have eaten here many times. It's reliable spot for delicious food, pleasant service and a comfortable dining experience. The one dish I can definitely recommend is the cauliflower steak; half a head of cauliflower, seasoned with cumin and other spices, mixed with tomatoes, cucumbers and an assortment of vegetables -- one of the better things I've ever eaten. The beverage director is also very knowledgeable and can recommend things, if necessary. If you are in the area, definitely pop on by. A little pricey, but hey, that's Manhattan. read more

Full disclosure - we never had the opportunity to taste the food at Black Barn because four hours prior to our confirmed reservation we received a call from the manager telling us that someone came in that day and booked the entire restaurant - so they we canceling our dinner reservation. Lucky for us NYC has many wonderful restaurants where they understand that In order to create a fine restaurant, it is not only about food - it is also about service. Worst customer service ever. Booked on Open Table July 8th for a party of 5 for Thursday July 21st. Opened the app yesterday to find all of the sudden my reservation was changed to 11:30am that day which I did not do. Emailed the restaurant, and got no response. Finally was able to get someone on the phone and now its sold out for a private event. Seems they conveniently forgot to call me to say now its held for a private event and just moved me to an 11:30am lunch reservation instead with zero notification. No accountability on their part and nothing resolved on their end. Had people coming in from out of town for this reservation since supposedly it is so great. Glad we didn't waste our time, now will officially never dine here. read more

This was my Daughters 21 st Birthday and we have been wanting to dine at this establishment for a long time, so I decided to surprise her . If a restaurant doesn't want to fully serve you late at night then decline the reservation.Mine was at 10:30 pm. Michael our waiter was flat,inattentive and was going through the motions.The rest of the staff vigorously cleaned around us obviously wanting to go home, however never paying attention when our hands went up because we required service or acknowledged us at all. The ribs were absolutely awful hard and fatty, and I didn't like that the chef before we ordered , because they were closing the kitchen looked at us like why are you here all while rubbing his face and mouth which hygienically is so inappropriate. The best part about this dining experience was the dessert which if we hadn't asked the waiter about dessert and whether or not we should put in our order, because the kitchen was going to close we would not have had dessert. The dessert was amazing,Bread pudding and Donuts. A manager never came to our table to ask how we were doing ! We are foodies and explained to Michael that we live in Virginia and have been wanting to dine at Black Barn for some time.So we added it to our list of restaurants that we're going to visit on our New York trip Daniels , Nobu and Phillipe just to name a few. We had not heard of this place before but were going out with others and they chose it. We fell in love! The place has a very rustic fun decor, open kitchen, beautiful and roomy. The 6 of us shared 3 apps all of which were delish! One was cauliflower, one was pickled carrots and the other was a special salad. I had the scallops but i will say i didn't love. My husband had the chicken and said it might be the best chicken he has ever had. Another had the bbq ribs which r more like short ribs which i had a taste of and i will definitely b ordering that next time. We also had two bottles of wine which were in the $85-90 range and were both wonderful, which is unusual in that price range. We will definitely be back! Btw, service was perfection! read more

Sad update: We came here again for an 8:15 dinner reservation on Weds Nov 16 following a long day of work, and we were not seated until 9pm. Frustratingly, there was lots of confusion and discrepancies on what exactly was happening depending on which hostess you talked to. When we finally were seated, the server offered us champagne (on a windy 40 degree night in November??) Anyways, we were with a friend from out-of-town so needless to say this was kind of hassle is the last thing you want to share with your visitors. read more

Great drinks. Great food. The table service was excellent. My only comment is the bar staff needs to be a little quicker and aware. Was not acknowledged with a half empty bar. Had to finally flag someone down. And then when our table was ready it was very hard to get any of the bartenders attention. The hostess kept coming to tell us to pay our bar tab. We were trying! Black Barn is the perfect place to enjoy a NYC brunch. We chose to dine in the bar due to the live jazz music which only added to the ambiance. Loved the decor and the food was excellent. Admittedly we tried quite a few starting with BBQ beef pizza to share, which was excellent, Farmers Omelet and pastrami sandwich all great and our southern guest loved the grits! Staff was very friendly and accommodating and in a nice neighborhood. Will certainly be back soon. read more

Went for dinner last night. The hostesses were very friendly and seated us right away. We were 30 minutes early for reservation, too. We sat in the back by the kitchen which is the best place to be from what I saw. The whole place is cavernous but the noise level is very acceptable. The tables and chairs are comfortable. We started by sharing a sausage appetizer that was really good and the breads that they put out were nice. Bread is served with what looks like a butter pat and garlic clove sunk in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Very tasty. I had cod and my companion had scallops. Both delicious. We paired them perfectly with a Grgich Hills Chardonnay. The wine list is on an iPad (not my favorite) but I found a few candidates and the sommelier was very knowledgeable and helpful. He gave me a few trivia points about the vintner that I didn't know. Bread pudding and Irish coffee for dessert - Perfect! Servers are very attentive but not overbearing - just right! We'll definitely be back! Thanks to the chefs and wait staff for a great night! read more

Came here for dinner for my Anniversary. When I tell you what a great choice.. OMG.. from the second you walk in, feeling welcomed by the hostess. We were sat and as we walked through the restaurant we were admiring the decor. Barn like yet classy. Even the music.. sounded like live music but it wasn't heavy in our ears. Great volume and choice. We ordered a cocktail to start, I had the snake bite and it was so different than any other drink I've had. ( mind you, we are both in restaurant business) it was delicious. We then had the Sommelier choose a bottle of wine and great job! Complimented both of our dishes! We had apps, the bone marrow and pork belly.. yum yum. Then entrees were the striped bass and steak. Could not stop eating.. was absolutely wonderful. The thought that went into the bass dish was eloquent and refined.. absolutely a beautiful dish. The most disappointing restaurant I have visiting in a while. Sat down at table with high stools near the front. My knees barely fit under the table - I felt like I was sitting in economy section of a Spirit Airlines flight. Service was rushed and uninviting- a random server tried to take my newly placed silverware before my entree was served, the waiter kept asking if we were done with out dishes when we had more than a third left on our plates. Ordered the Baby octopus appetizer - for $19 you get a grand total of one charred to death baby octopus. Truffle parmesan gnocchi was over salted but cheesy. Scallop entree everything on the plate was super salty - scallops crusted with flour that separated from scallop - not a true sear and the mushrooms that came as the side dish tastes like they were soaked in brine. Duck breast entree was flavorless but cooked okay. Black pepper sausage that accompanied the duck had an odd combination of peppercorn and sweet cherry - kind of tasted like a halls lozenge. Maybe go for the cheapish happy hour- but not for dinner. read more

The brunch pastrami sandwich was 2 slices of roast beef. For $20, It was an embarrassment and should be taken off the menu immediately. The manager acted shocked when he came by to ask about the sandwich. Also, the menu on their website understates the prices by 20-50%. If it's an old menu, it needs to be updated. We had to ask him to repeat several times. We finally ordered the meal. Ordered the risotto specials and it was too salty. When I came home I noticed that they overcharged!! We had a reservation for the restaurant and when we arrived we were asked if we wanted to sit outdoors or indoors. Given the weather was nice we chose to sit outdoors. As we looked through the menu, I was surprised because I didn't see any of the interesting dishes I remember from the menu on their site. We asked the waiter if there was a different menu but he told us this was the only one so we placed a few orders. We then looked on the website and saw there was a different menu. Inquiring within the restaurant, we found we had the lounge menu and there was a better menu at the restaurant indoors. We asked to be seated indoors and if they could possibly cancel our orders so we could order from the better menu (and more expensive) from the main restaurant. Unfortunately our food was already ready very quickly so they brought it over. The indoor menu looked very interesting and we decided to order the cheese soufflé as well. The food from the lounge menu wasn't that great but the cheese soufflé was delicious. I was disappointed because I wanted to try some of the other dishes from the restaurant (not lounge) menu but we already received the food and didn't want to waste it. They ended up not charging us for the cheese soufflé after we expressed our disappointment but it would have been better for the restaurant and us too if they cancelled our lounge orders and we instead ordered from the more interesting and expensive menu. read more

I decided to try a new restaurant when my girlfriends came to visit and it was perfect! We first had drinks at the bar and made it for the happy hour! It was quite crowded and a little noisy. We sat down where it was much quieter in the dining room and got the octopus which was grilled and the branzino and gnocchi all amazing! Ended with the donuts and chocolate soufflé. The Black Barn is truly a class act. It is really beautiful, and everything is chosen to reflect good taste. The staff could not have been more attentive. As in French three star restaurants the waiters are generally unnoticeable but appear suddenly at the very moment they are needed. My wife's pork shank was excellent, even to her trained Chinese culinary taste. I am on a diet and the chef created a perfect light entrée. A very very nice evening! read more
