Loved this place! It has been on my list of places to try before COVID happened so I was happy to see that they re-opened afterwards. The restaurant itself is split into two rooms. The front portion is called the Tavern; this is where the bar and about half of the dining tables are. There is also a fancier back room which I believe is closer to the open kitchen. I'd recommend making a reservation; definitely a great place for a nice date night or business dinner. I sat at the bar and ordered the house red wine $12 (which was a smoky cab sav) since it was happy hour. Happy hour, according to the sign on the wall, is 4:30-6:30pm. They have a few food options for happy hour as well; all $14. Diego was the bartender and was super friendly. He recommended the truffle gnocchi and the brussel sprouts which I ordered and enjoyed! The gnocchi was super rich and filling; a great dish to share. The restaurant didn't really get busy until 8pm on a Friday, but there were still plenty of tables available. They also have private rooms available for parties and larger dinners/gatherings. I am eager to come back for dinner and hopefully sit in the back room near the kitchen! This has to be one of the best places I've been to so far in the city. The ambiance, the service was amazing. The menu is not huge but let me tell you what is on the menu is done well and very well put together . The margarita was amazing 10/10 . They brought out an assortment of bread and that was great and fresh as well. The duck dish was incredible and so tender ! The bone marrow not pictures was to die for and so we'll seasoned and Cooke to perfection! The octopus was part of the small plates and let me tell you just wow a must get... smokey and yet so fresh. The ribs were by far the biggest in portion and tender full of sauce and flavor the only comment for this dish is the fries were too thin that grabbing them was so impractical and perhaps making them a tad larger in width would tie the dish together and bring it up to a 10/10. The sides were huge so keep this in mind when ordering this.... The star of the show was the truffle gnocchi as far as sides go! The Brussels sprouts were great in taste just a tad bit soggy , personally would love them a little more crispy ! Came back for our 2nd year in a row for Christmas Eve dinner and once again Blackburn did not disappoint . If anything it was even better , even the Braised Octopus which we talk about all year long ! We requested that Haymen be our server and he was . Always nice to be remembered as I'm sure he has lots of regulars . I got the Prixe Fix which included Hamachi Crudo, melt in your mouth perfection . Followed by a beet salad which was so refreshing and yummy . The main course was a Filet Mignon , cooked to perfection and needed no steak knife to be cut . Dessert was Eggnog Cheesecake with Gingerbread crust . Such a holiday treat. My son had the Braised Octopus, Tuna Tartare , Pepper Peppeted Cod , again a fish cooked to perfection . Also ordered the Bread pudding . We share everything . The cocktails were excellent as was the mulled wine served to us at the end of the meal. We don't usually go to the same restaurant for Christmas Eve but we couldn't not go to Blackburn for this occasion . Can't speak highly enough about Haymen . He knows service and not a showboat ! Went here with boyfriend for Valentine's Day. Safe to say we left hungry and would not return. The service was great, but the food was extremely underwhelming and just sad to look at and eat. For the price point and how long we waited to get our food, I really would not recommend. Not sure if the valentines menu was just a miss, but I got the mushroom ravioli. It tasted like feet, and was about 6 raviolis at best. My boyfriend got the Amish chicken and it looked so dry and bland. Again, service was nice! But the food was practically unbearable. Finally got to have brunch at BLACKBARN and it didn't disappoint! We sat outside and had a nice view of Madison Square Park. Our waitress was efficient and checked on us often. Came here on a rainy night a few months ago- the hostess originally walked us towards the back of the restaurant- the space is large and we asked to sit closer to the front, near the bar area. Our reservation was for dinner however, we ordered a bunch of appetizers and needless to say we were unable to finish all of them. Everything was super delish and a guaranteed tastebud "Wow" feeling! I had been dying to go here for ages, so I was really excited when my gf agreed to accompany me to dinner here one Saturday evening at their Nomad location. I arrived early and ordered a tequila based cocktail at the bar. The bartender, Juan, was really nice and said that if I didn't like the drink, he would be more than happy to make me another one. When I arrived at 6pm the place wasn't terribly crowded, but once we left around 8:30pm, there was hardly a seat in the place. Anyway, we had a reservation at 6:30pm, so we checked in at the front and were lead into the main dining hall, which I loved. It reminded me of a high end barn meets Gramercy Tavern's 'farm to table' theme (similar to Blue Hill in Westchester County). I also adored how you can use the little rooms on the right for private events where the door closes like a garage door in a barn, super cute. Anyway, when we sat down they gave us some bread accompanied by olive oil which was really tasty. We started off with the steamed Long Island mussels and Porcini Confit White Pizza to share. I honestly intended to do two apps and a main entree, but we were so full after this, we decided to call it quits! (The server did say the portions were rather large). The mussels were really good, they came in a delicious sauce which we used all of the bread to mop it up. The pizza was also tasty and very filling. To accompany my meal, I had two glasses of their 'house wine' which was a French Chenin Blanc and paired very nicely with both the pizza and mussels. All and all a great meal. The service became a little slower as the evening progressed and the place became super crowded, but our server was very cordial and hospitable. I appreciate the aesthetic of Blackbarn, particularly how spacious it is. It's rare to find Manhattan restaurants where you don't feel like other parties are on top of you (and vice versa). That being said, my overall impression of the place was that it was generally underwhelming. The food is okay, but it's not particularly creative or memorable in any way, and the service was painfully slow, at least during our brunch experience last weekend. I felt bad for our server and the only other server we saw, as it seemed like they were the only two handling all of the tables in the entire restaurant. I could be mistaken, but I did not observe any other servers on the floor. Our server was nice, but she was clearly overwhelmed, and we had to flag her down multiple times. In terms of food, I had the farmer's omelette, which was cooked well, but the sausage that was in it had a strong, almost gamey aftertaste that I didn't particularly care for. My husband had the burger, which he said was okay but very rich. One of our friends had the egg sandwich, which she also said was okay, and our other friend had the chilaquiles, which she enjoyed. We ordered the loaded tots to share, and those were the highlight of the meal. If the food was better, I could overlook the service and return to this place, but it doesn't seem worth it based on this past experience. read more

We came here for brunch with friends and had two little ones. The space is amazingly spacious and we had a nice, lounge-like table in front of the band. The vibe seemed to work for all - the brunch crowd, families, tourists, etc. The severs empathized with the baby situation and because of the casual/louder vibe (with the band), patrons were the same way. The food was very good, a bit on the heavier side but you know what you're getting into when you come here. The restaurant scores high on the overall ambiance and interior design. It feels high-end and modern, but cozy at the same time. Unfortunately our group's overall experience was misaligned with first visual impressions. We arrived early for a 4:30pm reservation. The hostess was gracious enough to sit us at the bar until our reservation time (the restaurant was completely empty). However, they didn't come to seat us until 5:30pm. As with many restaurants, they indicated a time limit for our table which we assumed would be extended given that they sat our group late. The waitress came to take our drink and, what we thought would be, an initial order for our appetizers since we hadn't had time to look at the menu. To our surprise, we were told by the waitress that we had to put in our whole order, not just the appetizers as it would take too long for the kitchen to fulfill our dinner order if we ordered separately...the first sign that things were a bit off. We complied and put in our dinner orders too. Then, when another server brought out our food (rushed our food out) he literally shoved my friend's arm out of the way so he could put her plate down in front of her. He had a look of impatience on his face. I have never seen anything like it. We promptly reported his behavior to the waitress. The same server came out and hurriedly almost threw another shared dish into the middle of the table. He placed it so carelessly, it wobbled on the table. We ate our meal and the waitress then brought the dessert menu. We were deciding which dishes to share and were approached by the hostess who told us we could not order dessert because they had to release our table. They literally told us we couldn't have dessert...like...wow. When we mentioned they sat us late, he said that we had to release the table and should be grateful they sat us at the bar before our reservation. We showed up early and ended up being rushed out and penalized all so they could herd us out and herd a new group in. It was one of the worst dining experiences ever. As we waited for our car, we also noted that the table sat empty for the full 20+ minutes we were outside the restaurant. Do not recommend and will never go back. Definitely not a well run and managed business. Too hungry to turn over tables and too little focus on its customers and hospitality. Inhospitable more like it. read more

A friend and I had the pleasure of having brunch at this restaurant on Saturday. The meal was delicious. We had the chicken and waffles. The savory parmesan rosemary waffles were amazing. They were crispy and light. Chicken was delicious! Not sure what the appetizer was called but it was potatoes slice paper thin with cheese in between the slices, cut into squares and deep fried and served drizzled with sour cream chives. It's difficult to point out what the positive experiences were for Saturday brunch. Everything from the hostess to dining service was terrific. A so-call "test" came when one of the dishes turned out to be spicier than anticipated. One of my guests at the table who ordered the shrimp and grits platter had it returned. I watched intensely as to how the server would behave and rectify the situation. He was more than accommodating and before he took the plate he asked what she'd like to replace it with. No attitude from the server at all which was great. The replacement dish ended up to be a 2 thumbs up and all went well. The grits plate wasn't charged to my bill either. Everything ordered from sides (brussels sprouts, Johnny cakes, and loaded tots) to mains (Croque Madame, Wagyu and Chicken Milanese sandwiches) were nothing short of delicious. So this place has a vibe, but not the one I was expecting. I think my rating might be a little unfair for that reason. I was expecting like an elevated dining experience (think date night) but walked into an elevated tavern experience. With that said, once I realized this wasn't going to be the type of dinner where I was going to hear my partner with ease, I tried to give it a fair chance. Call a spade a spade you know, it's not my fault I chose the wrong place for the vibe I wanted. The waiter was exceptionally knowledgeable and clearly a fan of the chef, but I didn't share his enthusiasm. We shared the tuna tartare, crispy potatoes, and shishito peppers, while I had the bass and he had the duck. We didn't have cocktails (again, I think a mistake on our part. They looked great and this was the vibe for it. We just can't with current medications.) Sadly, I'm having trouble remembering any of the flavor profiles and we just arrived home. Our meal was around $180 which if I compare to other $90/pp dinners we've had, it just doesn't hold up. It had been awhile since my family had gotten together due to the pandemic, and I'm glad it was at BLACKBARN! They have a superb selection of wine and bourbons. I had the autumn vegetable plate with a side of truffle gnocchi and it was AMAZING! Those gnocchi were like biting into tiny pillows of heaven, and the veg plate was the comfort food I was looking for in cold weather. We shared plenty of appetizers, which were A+, as well as the comforting bread basket. Everyone at my table was impressed and really enjoyed the food! During restaurant week in February my wife, daughter and I were taken to BLACKBARN by friends for a wonderful dinner experience. The restaurant is vibrant, spacious and reflects what I would describe as elegant modern barn (I'm laughing at my description but really it is very nice - see pictures on-line. The service from start to finish was terrific! Chef-Owner John Doherty stopped by our table and was genuinely interested in our experience as we indicated that for some of us it was our first time. Well the experience was all we could hope for. All our entrees, steak, fish and lamb were prepared perfectly and the sides and deserts were delicious! The wine choices were impressive. Thought the food here was just okay, the quality of the food / uniqueness was just average, and the prices were on the high side. I came here for brunch with a few of my friends on a Saturday afternoon at 2 pm; mostly because the other 2 places we had wanted to go to for brunch had really long lines and we didn't want to wait 30 min (or more) for a table elsewhere. This place was able to seat us right away, so we ended up eating here. I ordered a burger which came with a fried egg, fried onions or shallots, lettuce, tomato, and some fries. For $26, I would have expected the best burger of my life. I've had better burgers or similar at other restaurants for $10 less. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing here, but I wouldn't get the burger here again. The ambiance itself was nice - kind of like the name implies, a rustic chic kind of look. There were a decent amount of kids eating here, so it seems pretty kid friendly and the tables are nicely spaced out too so you don't feel like you're sitting right on top of another table. It wasn't overly loud either so we could have a conversation easily without screaming. Overall, a little overpriced for what you get, but if you're looking for a decent place to eat brunch without a too-long wait and don't mind paying a little more, this is a good bet. I won't be wanting to come back here again and again, but wouldn't be severely opposed if one of my friends wanted to come back here for a meal. read more

Look, if I had been on top of my Yelp game recently, my prior 6 visits would have shown me giving this place a 4 or 5 star rating (probably 5 this first time, and maybe 4 stars the 5th & 6th) - but the 7th, being CHRISTMAS EVE - and TERRIBLE - it brings this down to 2. And "Meh" is being kind. A terrible meal on any other, regular night - maybe I'd just note that there is always room for improvement and think, "hey, everyone has an off night." But if your 'off night' is Christmas Eve, one of the most special nights of the entire year, and one you've been promoting to your Facebook fans, that is just entirely wrong. And it isn't because I don't like fish or other creatures from the sea... (is it was the "feast of the seven fishes" - it was because each dish was terribly prepared. I had high hopes, as I have absolutely loved the preparation of TUNA TARTAR from their regular menu the three times I've had it. What came with the Christmas Eve dinner, though, was brown, smelly, and tasted super off. My husband and I took one bite each and were afraid we were going to get food poisoning! (TMI: we did have to go straight home b/c we both got the runs). The SQUID was inedible - it was so chewy you could not even cut it with a knife. The third fish on this 3-'fish' dish was like a strange, coarsely texture paste. The UNI RAVIOLI, I was told, had become a very popular dish. While, to me, uni (which is creamy and often somewhat briny) being paired with tomato sauce was an odd choice, I thought it might be done well and interesting as their other food I've had has always been good. But if it is normally well-received by patrons my guess is that it, too, was just prepared incorrectly on the night of Christmas Eve. I barely ate my fish and mussels when it arrived. Over-salted, who cares, I was done at that point. I asked the waiters and, when the manager came over, I asked her why everything was so inconsistent with the quality of their normal fare. Her response was to send us dessert. Did you miss what I said about the quality? The dessert was no good either, btw. I want to reiterate I've been here 7 times. 4 other times for food, 2 for drinks. I loved their tuna tartar and pork buns in the past. My husband loved their burger. The shishitos weren't my thing (dressed too much with mango pico and bland cheese) but were OK. This dinner, whilst it did not ruin my Christmas Eve, did ruin, absolutely, my faith in this restaurant and my desire to return - which really is a shame (for me) as I had found it a comforting and solid spot before. If you're going to continue doing Holiday dinners, Black Barn (and you clearly are), please bring your A game - even for those of us who have early 5 PM reservations on Christmas Eve. read more

I had Sunday brunch followed a few weeks later by a corporate dinner that I planned in the Loft private dining room. Brunch was served in the relaxed front bar area, seated on couches at short coffee tables. It was more comfortable than I originally thought it would be when the hostess picked the table. Two of us sat next to each other and could chat and people-watch. Live jazz played at the front. Black Barn Fried Chicken & Waffles were unique, very nice and satisfied my C&W craving. Joey B's Avocado Toast was Ok, but nothing special. Service was good, I'd say brunch was 4-Stars worthy. The private dinner was awesome. Even my boss gave kudos. The service staff were personable and super friendly, and I particularly enjoyed working with the lead. The charcuterie and cheese board got things off, followed by 6 passed hot & cold hors d'oeuvres. Everyone raved over the Frenched baby lamb chops, Caponata. They melted in our mouths! Dinner included 3 first course (bone marrow and foraged mushroom toast were delicious!), 3 second course and 3 main course entrees family style on round tables of 6. The beef filet was the most popular entree, grilled medium rare, but I really enjoyed the seared branzino filet. We were so full we could barely squeeze in 3 desserts. There were a lot of doggie bags. Black Barn gave us the full wine list to select from instead of the banquet list. Excellent choices at reasonable price points. 25 people went through almost 25 bottles. I was especially pleased with the William Fevre Chablis, Domaine de la Perriere Sancerre, and Terre Nere Etna Rosso. 5 Stars for the Loft ambience, service and food. Enjoyable place! I attended a private event for Moses Brown School alums that was held in their upstairs loft. Both the Moses Brown School's alumni office and Blackbarn are to be commended on a well run, relaxed event that featured delicious finger food and drinks. When I entered the restaurant and told them I was here for the event, one of the greeters walked me to the entrance to the event. She was very friendly and made me feel welcomed. Likewise, the servers at the gathering were cordial and very professional. The menu (kudos to Moses Brown for choosing RI friendly appetizers) included fried chicken sliders, meatballs, pasta, squash ravioli, flatbreads and a delicious array of meat and fish appetizers served non-stop. I know it can be hard for restaurants to make things work on Thanksgiving, but we had a really disappointing experience. First, they lied on their website about the prix fixe menu. My wife specifically made a reservation at this restaurant because she really wanted pumpkin or pecan pie, and they listed pumpkin pie as one of the dessert options. When we got there, we noticed that the in-person menu was identical except that in the dessert section, "pumpkin pie" had been changed to "pumpkin cheesecake." The service also took forever the whole time. We had tiny glasses for our tap water and they frequently didn't re-fill them. It was not a packed restaurant at all. Again, I know it can be hard to staff a Thanksgiving event, but it was still frustrating because, frankly, a lot of the food tasted terrible. The cranberry sauce had a really messed up chemical flavor that made it inedible to both my wife and me. Something was really off about the yams too (though my wife liked those). I'm not a finicky eater, but the appetizers were lackluster. I got a dirty gin martini and it was the worst martini I've had in my life. Something was very wrong with the olives; they were old or rotten. This flavor seeped into the drink as well. The flavor stayed in my mouth for a long time and made my experience pretty bad. I felt a little sick too. A glass of straight vodka would have tasted better. The turkey with gravy was about as good as a person would make at home, but there was only a tiny amount of gravy, so the really dry turkey wasn't pleasant to eat until we got them to bring us some more gravy after we were half-finished. When we got the deserts, the bread pudding was fine, but the pumpkin cheesecake sucked. It was very small too, not that it mattered. My wife who, again, booked this place because they said they had pumpkin pie, was very disappointed. We also noticed that other people had been given free bread early in their meals, but they didn't give us that. We had been wondering why they initially set our table with butter knives and then took them away. They either forgot or ran out of the bread for us. Each course took a very long time to bring out, so we were kind of bored. To their credit, they did give us free glasses of Malbec because of the long wait. But they asked us if everything was okay and I mentioned the rotten martini and we told them something was very wrong with the cranberries. All of this stuff wouldn't have been so bad if the meal had cost $70 or something. But this meal was over $300 before tip. Nothing was comped, even the rotten garbage they gave us. This place totally screwed us. It was very surprising because they have good reviews, but they totally ripped us off. The whole time I was wishing we had just eaten from a halal cart nearby, or at least a normal-priced restaurant. This was a profoundly disappointing experience and I'm bitter about it because of the huge price tag for getting fed actual spoiled or tainted food and the terrible service. read more

Lunch Review: Made reservations with someone for a nice lunch at Blackbarn without knowing much about it. The environment itself is worth a visit- when I say sit in the back, you will know why. Blackbarn has a great rustic and approachable feel for lunch yet I could easily see myself having dinner in the evening. Our waitress was top notch as well- she was attentive and really funny. I ended up having the roasted turkey with chipotle chips. My lunch choice was really good, just wasn't great. As soon as you take a bite of the sandwich, everything started sliding out of the sandwich so although the flavors were good, the eating experience was a little difficult. In addition, the chips were really good just not chipotle flavored to me. If the chips were labeled as just homemade chips, I wouldn't say a thing but if you call then chipotle flavored, I expect a smoky kick. With all the being said, I would easily come back and for dinner this time around. The environment, the service and the food warrant a second and a third visit to me. read more
