Beautiful restaurant, terrible customer service. I've dined at Blackbird a few times since they've opened; each time hopeful for a positive experience and each time utterly disappointed. The common denominator in all my experiences was poor customer service. From unfriendly or unprofessional hostesses, to astronomical wait times for food and beverages to arrive, to negligent wait staff, I've encountered the gamut of restaurant faux pas at Blackbird. On one occasion I waited 20 minutes before a server took my drink order and then another 25 minutes for the drinks (one beer and one cocktail) to arrive. On another occasion it took 40 minutes for our appetizer to arrive. To be fair, the appetizer was delicious (octopus) but I was famished and 40 minutes wait seemed extravagant. Conventional wisdom acknowledges most consumers can forgive mediocre food in the presence of stellar customer service, but the reverse is rarely true. A negative experience can spoil even the best tasting meal. Just as an attractive person can adorn themselves in the finest of linens, accessories and perfumes, and at the same time repel potential suitors with a sour attitude; so can a gorgeously appointed restaurant serving good food ward off prospective guests with bad customer service. The good news is deficiencies in customer service can easily be turned around with skilled management, well-trained staff and a solution-focused attitude. read more

This is a new addition to a beautiful town that lacks restaurants options and has to yet bring up it's culinary level to match the expectations of both those who live here and those who visit. With that said, it is a very expensive addition, part of the new swanky hotel and as such is rather limited, it is however a new addition! We tested only two dishes out of sheer curiosty and at off meal hours. The desert: dulce de leche, was visually stunning-a piece of art in the true sense. However, the flavors clashed, rather then appealed to the palate and at times is was simply vapid. It was in great contrast to it's look and price of $14. We also ordered an appetizer that consisted of seafood, unfortunately I don't recall the name and cannot find the appetizers on the menu online. This dish was better then the desert in terms of culinary satisfaction, but still wasn't as good as it looks.... I think the highlight of this restaurant is the look; its nothing like what you will find in Santa Barbra, it's very slick, quite opulent, distinct and reminiscence of high end modern interiors in Milano, especially in the 90'. The theme is also very distinct and dark as the famous Hitchcock film, The Birds, a filmmaker that SB seem to be enamored with....so if you are a fan as well, this should be a treat. The service was over the top in so many ways: the lengthy lecture on the dishes, on the chef (I think the waiter said he was hailed from Germany), the mistaken identity with a family that already dined there. The waiter kept assuming that we were there previously (or maybe wanted to create a cluby feeling....). The odd part was that the service was timely, professional, UNTIL we asked for the check- that took FOREVER and there were only couple of table to serve besides us.... The manager (looked like it) took our card and no one seemed to process it, not himself, not the waiter. The transaction station was in plain view, from our table and we could watched how it was not taken care of, the staff was milling around, chating among themselves while the manager did nothing. Very odd. So all in all, I would recommend going to this restaurant more for amusement, rather then for a solid, well deserved, high priced meal. read more

The food is presented very beautifully and the atmosphere and location are great! Our server was very attentive and professional. The menu lists items in the dishes, so I had to ask a lot of questions, because I like to know what I'm ordering and going to be getting served. Our server was great at explaining, so be sure to ask unless you're the adventurous type who will go ahead and eat anything in front of you. He was kind and patient explaining the dishes, although I'm sure this is time consuming for the busy servers. Anyway we arrived not really hungry but it was dinner time and we had reservations so we went anyway. We didn't order much since we weren't that hungry. We did have the lobster claw appetizer, which I highly recommend. It was delicious!!! I was so excited when it arrived I dived right in and didn't get a picture, sorry. Then we shared the halibut, not my favorite. Beautifully presented and had a nice searing to the outside, but a little too salty for my taste and it was on a sauce, which I did inquire on prior to, because I don't like saucy fish, and would of ordered it on the side, but was told there was no sauce... there is. But that being said, we still together finished it off, vegetables served with it were delicious. They have a full bar and an interesting menu. Summary: Great small plates, meh entrees, and horrible service for big groups. I dined with a guest during their soft opening week. The hamachi appetizer and scallops were the clear winners (also got the plank salmon entree and mushroom appetizer). Their service was acceptable and the only thing that stood out were some pricing errors on the wine menu. I than booked a large party of 8 for a birthday dinner that following week and the whole thing ended up taking 3.5 hours to feed everyone. They had run out of certain dishes and didn't notify us until an hour and half had gone by, forgetting meals, and drinks being forgotten or all brought out at different times the entire night. They brought out complimentary desserts for us to share, but the rest of the meal was paid and tipped in full (22% for large groups). Most recently I had a friend book their birthday dinner in a private room a week in advance and was told they would be getting a confirmation since all the computer systems weren't synced yet. When he called back after no confirmation, they said his date was booked and gave a later date. On the date of the event we had our entire group show up only to be told that there was a miscommunication and that no room was available. I'm very disappointed to have seen such a special day ruined. but am looking forward to the staff and kitchen figuring out the logistic for larger groups in the future. read more

I had a couple cocktails and appetizers at the bar with coworkers and had a good time. The prices are a bit expensive, but the quality more than makes up for it. The drinks are well made and do the trick, I'd highly recommend trying one of the specialty cocktails. For appetizers we had the Carrots (yum), Octopus (best I've had, they braised it so was not rubbery at all), Figs (really delicious and sweet) and Flat Bread (it was good, wouldn't get it again as it was pretty basic). The restaurant is part of the new Hotel Californian which is absolutely incredible and a much needed luxury hotel in Santa Barbara. The grounds are gorgeous and you almost feel like you're in a different place when you are walking around the plaza. I would highly recommend checking this place out. read more

Tourist restaurant. Poor quality and overpriced. The Caesar salad lettuce had dirt in it and just a small bit of dressing. The ribeye was over cooked and we asked for veg instead of potatoes but were told they could not accommodate. We then asked if they could just serve the steak with no potatoes but they said they could not accommodate. The best part of the place was the delightful and attentive guy who served water and checked on us. There are so many great restaurants in SB to try. Unh-Wow and wow. We are veggie first then protein people and this place . . . this place did not disappoint. I'm going to use my favorite word a lot in this review: yuh-Mazing (henceforce, YUM). We ordered the crispy brussel sprouts with pickled red fresno chili and pomegranate seeds and a Vardouvan ( curry ) creme fraiche and black current syrup = YUM. Then we had a radicchio salad with asian pear and prickly pear dressing and pepitas and leek ash and YUM, a perfect complement to the complexities of the B-Sprouts. Then we had a very cool Kampachi crudo with sliced persimmon, anchiote chili oil and cilantro foam. Delicate, light, YUM. Then we decided we would pass on an entree and go straight to the desserts. The first was a kambocha gelato with delicate cake and pumpkin sugar crisp and hazelnut powder in a clear sugar bowl that we broke up-------- spectactular. Then we had perhaps my most amazing dessert ever, a three course apple deliciousness for $28. Goodness in the form of what looked like an apple mini-burrito with fennel after goodness which was an apple celery gelato nestled in stacks of crisped apples and then a carmelized apple tartin with gelato Our waiter throughout was Kelly. Fantastic dinner on Friday night 11/29/19. We ordered: Santa Barbara Spiny Lobster Cavatelli, Scallops w/ Pork Belly & Lentils, Whole Roasted Branzino, and Radicchio Salad w/ Prickly Pear Vinaigrette. A perfect order. I was in charge of the restaurant selection tonight and the pressure was high. I have two picky Chinese parents with incredibly specific taste palettes. This is the first dinner in history that we each cleaned our plates. We each got dishes that we loved. For me, pasta. For my mom, scallops (always). For my dad, a whole fish. My dad, who is the pickiest of us all would not stop raving about the branzino and how fresh and tender it was. We were all able to share our plates too which balanced our whole dinner out perfectly. I am so pleased with our dinner tonight and even happier than it impressed my parents. Also to add, it was a gorgeous restaurant with great service. 10/10 go if you're in SB. A true Santa Barbara gem and fantastic fine dining spot. We went here for our fifth anniversary dinner and was blown away by their customer service and artistry in their food and cocktails. Everything seemed like a work of art, from my custom whiskey sour to the special fig tart, flavor explosion! The pastry chef here truly is one of the best in town. Oh and if our anniversary dinner wasnt already amazing, check this out for customer service. The next day we walked past the restaurant on a night out with friends and our server Jeremy spotted us and ran to return our anniversary cards that we absentmindedly left the night before! Pros: ambiance, wait staff was friendly and attentive. Brussels sprouts were very good. Cocktail and wine options were also very good. Cons: crab cakes were uninspired. They were not well seasoned, and came across pretty bland. The dry-aged steak was brutal. It was borderline criminal to treat such a great piece of beef. The sous vide preparation left a lot to be desired. I particularly enjoy my steak rare, but the waiter specifically suggested that due to the thickness of the steak I order it MR. I went with his suggestion. The steak came out closer to Medium, and was over cooked on the edges. They also sliced the steak in the kitchen, and I think they cut too soon, leaving the beef somewhat dry. The real criminal act was their garlic aioli. It looked and tasted like the chef had scooped Best Foods into a piping bag and then randomly dotted the dish with little macarons of mayonnaise. It was very unappealing. They also served the steak with a carmelized onion sauce that was tasty, but didn't do anything to enhance the steak. The dish was also severely under seasoned, I suspect the chef expected the aioli to do the heavy lifting of seasoning and adding moisture. Overall the meal left a lot to be desired. When dropping $300 on a meal, you should be left feeling satisfied, and wondering when you'll get to return. Tl;dr: skip the entree. Drink your meal and enjoy a few tapas. read more

I decided on blackbird for my engagement dinner. My fiancé made a reservation and mentioned in the notes that we were celebrating our engagement. We went in for dinner and our server was kind but did not seem knowledgeable on the menu nor showed interest in taking care of us even though we were the only table in there all night. While we weren't expecting anything for our occasion we thought maybe since it was a high end restaurant that they would acknowledge or even make it feel like it was a special occasion. We went to the Blackbird last night to celebrate a birthday. We are locals and we love to experience new places and we are very loyal to our favorites. We tried as many dishes as we could and everything was wonderful. We all ordered the signature cocktails and our waiter Chris was very well informed of everything on the menu. Paul the manager was wonderful and really made the whole experience something very special. After an amazing dinner of literally everything we could possibly fit into our tummies we were lucky enough to get a tour of the new hotel. Wow! What a beautiful pool! I can't wait to get a room and enjoy the property. We recommend this place very much. It's not to pretentious to go to and it's still fancy enough to really have a special celebration. We went to Blackbird last Saturday and it was quite an experience. I have a severe nut and sesame allergy. When we sat down, I was very clear with the waitress that I had that and asked that she check with the chef on everything we order just to make sure there was nothing in there. She was very friendly and helpful and said no problem. After we ordered, she checked with the chef and came back to the table to confirm everything we ordered checked our boxes. For the appetizers, my husband ordered hummus and I ordered the green salad and cheese plate. I typically don't eat hummus because it has tahini in it but the waitress came out and said its all handmade in house and she specifically spoke to the chef and he said there was zero tahini in it and then read off the list of ingredients in it. It was said with a lot of certainty and with it being a nice restaurant, we assumed the chef wouldn't be lying. I dipped my fork into the hummus to take a literal grain of salt size lick to check first and then took a bite of salad. Within 30 seconds my entire mouth exploded with an allergic reaction and I could feel my throat very scratchy and lips swell. We called the waitress over and she was consistently very kind through everything. She went to get the chef. The chef came out and I asked which dish had tahini in it because I was having a reaction. I needed to know so that I could figure out both how to treat it and I needed to throw some food at the allergy to get the feeling out of my mouth. The chef INSISTED there was no sesame or nuts in any of the dishes. That was patently false, I was having a serious allergy. I told him that couldn't be the case. He said " there is nothing on your table with tahini or sesame in it". About 30 seconds later - he said "BUT if anything on your table WAS to have tahini, it would be the hummus." That made no sense to me, you are either sure or youre not. He then doubled back and said nothing had it. He was clearly someone who couldn't take responsibility for an error. I wasn't upset with him until he was essentially insinuating I was wrong and wasn't having a reaction. Honestly, as a chef and as a chef of a nice restaurant, that is completely unacceptable. He could have killed someone. The waitress later came back to the table with several bottles of water at my request as I was trying to get it out of my system along with Benadryl I had. She sort of insinuated that there were other prep chefs that help the chef and he may not have known there was sesame in there. That is really unacceptable. Its such a common allergy and you cant adamently say there is nothing in it if you aren't sure. We finished our meal (mostly my husband ate the rest) and I tried to throw food on the allergy since I was feeling incredibly nauseous. We live locally but were having a staycation so we went back to our hotel and I threw up literally all night. I was incredibly sick. We were fine paying for the bill but it was confusing to me that they didn't even offer to take that dish off the bill or send a manager over to check in. Instead we were just met with a doubting chef. The waitress was very kind the whole time and I believe she was just misled by the chef. All of this to say, if you have allergies. DO NOT GO HERE. They would be served to find a chef that actually believes people and doesn't inadvertently kill someone. We have of course shared our experience with others but I wanted to share here in case anyone else with allergies is considering. read more

This place has beautiful food. The service is great and the restaurant is pretty. I think my biggest hangup is that the menu is not appetizing. It reads like a laundry list of possible allergens. I'm often surprised when a dish comes out because based on the description I didn't have a good sense of what I was ordering. For that matter, order the Citrus. I've had it twice and it's delightful! Little rounds of kumquat and a selection of perfect supremes over burrata cheese. I wish kumquat was in the description since it's my favorite part of the dish. Since you don't know what you're ordering I would love for them to have a tasting menu so that I didn't have to bother. Often my favorite dishes in that setting are the ones I wouldn't have picked out, but that the chef knew were stars. Back to the food-- we started with the Citrus and spring onion soup. Both delightful. The mushrooms were not our favorite; the crab roll was buttery goodness. By the time I got to my ravioli I understood why they started with 2 when the restaurant opened (but changed to 3 to reflect a better value). During the first few minutes of sitting there, without water or greeting from the server, I was awaiting disappointment, but it ended up being a great experience. Cocktails are pricey, $15-16, but the gin egg white blueberry sour was spot on! My mom's mezcal drink was a bit imbalanced, with too much smoke and not enough other flavours, but presentation and creativity were great. The food, however, wow! The combinations of flavours were stellar, with unique combinations, ingredients and presentation. The Brussels sprouts were tender yet crispy, with an awesome curry paste. The chickpea fries, octopus and branzino were spectacular! Pork belly was the only let down, with undercooked beans and unimpressive clams. But overall, all of the food was surprisingly amazing! I haven't written a Yelp review in ages. The fact that I'm writing this should suggest some serious thought--both by the restaurant and any potential diners. Putting aside the fact that a "Michelin listed" restaurant had some of the worst service I have ever experienced, the food was lacking in nearly every way imaginable. There was no wow factor, The mussels were chewy due to being overcooked. The only thing saving the mussels were the chorizo broth and buttery sourdough bread served with it. Our waitress was too busy chatting with the bartender to advise us that the $75 short rib entree wasn't a traditional braised short rib, rather a bland "steak" version of short ribs that was lacking in flavor. The only saving grace as the risotto that is really hard to mess up to begin with. The ambiance can be described as trying to be Los Angeles, but without anything worth writing home about. The intimate restaurant was nothing special. Truly very disappointed. We were hoping to include Blackbird in our rotation for exquisite dining experiences. They do have outside seating which I regret not using. Menu is a little difficult to understand. We went with the citrus and the flat bread as starters. Citrus was a little weird , pretty much some fruits and yogurt. I would recommend. The flag bread was great. My wife went with cauliflower soup. They make Table side and is very creamy! I chose the the spaghetti and it was decent. Maybe I'm just not used to ultra fancy food. Staff was very attentive and helpful. Although people in other reviews are complaining about price we found the price to be just about why you would expect for a main spot on state street. Two people without drinking was about 100 plus a tip. If I'm being honest food was about a 3 but service , facility and location make it an over all 4 read more

However I have rated this restaurant 3 stars because it took 15 minutes for someone to bring us water and because the options are over priced. I can understand paying $7 for a glass of sparkling water if the service is high end, but the service is average. People have to stop reviewing high simply because they spend a lot of money. This restaurant is average at best. The server was fine except that after the food was done and desert was finished, literally did not come back again to drop the check or anything. The worst ending to a meal you can offer a guest and at 125 to 150 per person, not acceptable. The food though was very good. I had the branzino which was cooked perfectly and the offering of a slice of Speck in the center made the fish truly unique. The UNI appetizer was way too salty from the seaweed although the UNI itself was perfect. Location is easy to get to and the restaurant is very loud. Not intimate, not private, just loud and very bright. Would I go back? No, there are too many great offerings at better price point in Santa Barbara. read more
