Test Pilot lands somewhere in the orbit of tiki without fully crash-landing on a bamboo runway, and honestly, that works in its favor. In a stretch of Lower State packed with breweries, wine bars, and roaming weekend energy-drink humans in vintage bowling shirts, it threads the needle nicely between cocktail bar and tropical escape pod. The menu leans tiki-adjacent rather than deep-cut exotica, but the drinks are smartly built and avoid the "every problem can be solved with more rum" philosophy. There's a solid spread of spirits across the board, which makes the place feel more welcoming to a broader nightlife crowd instead of strictly rum disciples clutching vintage Trader Vic's mugs. The Oaxacan Dead was the standout for me. Smoky, balanced, endlessly sippable. One of those drinks where every sip quietly talks you into ordering another without turning into a sugar avalanche. The Jungle Bird was also great, though presented more in the direction of a Negroni than the punchier tropical versions you usually see. Bitter, restrained, and easy to settle into. Crowd-wise, things tilted a little frat-floaty as the night rolled on, but the staff handled everything smoothly and kept the vibe from turning into full pirate mutiny. Service stayed friendly and composed even when the volume of the room started climbing like a malfunctioning theremin. Big bonus points for the location and outdoor seating. Being right in the middle of Lower State makes it an easy launch point or final stop depending on your evening trajectory. Love this tiki-themed bar in The Funk Zone. Really cute nautical themed decor everywhere. I will always try a tiki bar. Besides the bar seating there's also a little alcove for some privacy as well as couch and outdoor seating. I sat at the bar though and talked to the bartender a bit. He was very chatty and friendly. I tried the Juice Box and the Millennial Flacon Fizz. They were both tasty but the second one was definitely my favorite. The coconut milk just made it. I want to try replicating it at home. My only complaint and why I took off a star was that the drinks were weak. I had two and basically felt nothing. Tiki bars by definition should have strong drinks! But maybe it was just that particular bartender, I dunno. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Fun place that puts a gentle twist on tiki classics. We were game for another stop after dinner and found out about this place, which we learned was affiliated with The Good Lion up the street. Since that's where we'd had a pre-dinner drink, it seemed quite fitting that we should have a post-dinner drink here. It was sizable and nicely decorated, with a convivial atmosphere. It was also mercifully uncrowded on the night of our visit. I got the Ube pina colada, which had a hint of ube to make things a little different and wasn't too sweet, like so many tiki drinks. The hubby got the Thai iced tiki, which had passion fruit pearls you fished out with a little wooden paddle--another interesting touch. The drinks were good but tended a bit toward the sour side. If you're in the mood for tiki drinks off the beaten path, give them a try. read more

The place was cute inside, a good little vibe. The drinks were cool and tasted good. The prices were ok. The bartender was not efficient. You would walk up, he would apologize for the wait, take your order 5 minutes later, and then proceed to take 5 other groups orders and close everybody out and still didn't get my drink...... i ended up ordering 2 drinks at once since i was not going to do that again. read more

The drinks and atmosphere were a hit for us at this tiki bar in the Funk Zone. It was pretty packed but we were served quickly after we selected from the fun menu options. As a fan of banana, I loved the Bananacapa and found it to be well-balanced. We sat outside because the neighboring winery was hosting a DJ but I would definitely return to enjoy the music and vibe inside. read more

Happy that my friend introduced me to this spot and we came for a pre-event cocktail. I'd always heard great things about Test Pilot so I was excited knowing that I was finally going to get the chance to try them. Test Pilot is giving tropical, sailboat, jungle vibes lol. This spot is fun, festive, and inviting. It's dimly lit inside and spacious enough as they have bar seating, cute little table nooks, and some outdoor space. The bar isn't too big but when we stumbled in it was still quite so easy access to some seats. Unfortunately I forgot the bartenders name but he was very nice and kind. He knew my friend so they chatted for a bit and he hand crafted each of our cocktails beautifully. I opted for the purple Mai Thai and it was super good. Refreshing, pretty presentation, the right amount of sweetness and not overly strong. A solid drink and the menu here is really creative and fun. I wish we could've stayed longer, but I'll definitely be back. There were so many different cocktails on the menu that I need to come back to try and I can confirm that at least what I ordered was a 5/5. read more

I was really excited to check this place out but I probably just came during peak hours because service was super slow. I also noticed a lot of people getting helped first before my group which wasn't too great. I got the ube pińa colada and it was a tasty drink and you can taste a hint of ube but I was just a bit bummed of the drink to ice ratio. I mentioned it to the bartender but he didn't do anything about it and just handed me the drink. I also had the Thai iced tiki which was pretty good and I really like the popping boba on top! The interior was nice and they have lots of seating as it shares an outside seating with a winery next door. I would like to give this place another shot but hoping to visit when it's not too busy. read more

Had to come back for the Millennial Falcon Fizz. This cocktail is my favorite in the entire world. It was one of the first cocktails I ever tried back in 2021 when I became of age to drink and started to explore downtown SB. The bartenders here are attentive and there is ample seating outdoors. It can get pretty crowded inside by the bar but they'll always get your order in! read more

Test Pilot is one of those places in town where you go to if you're in the mood for an inventive cocktail that's giving tropical vibes. It's categorized as a tiki bar, but would I deem this place a tiki bar? Not really, but the cool tiki mugs give you that Polynesian vibe. It's also the only place in the Funk Zone that provides tropical drinks. My only gripe is that they tend to be overly filled with crushed ice, and leaves you wondering how much drink did you really get for your money. Aside from the crushed ice, the drinks are packed with a punch so you won't need that many to make you feel buzzy. Every cocktail that I have tried had a well balanced blend of exotic flavors making each sip enjoyable. On my latest visit I tried the Ube Pina Colada. Not only was this drink a beautiful purple color, but the taste was yummy! I don't like sweet drinks, but this one was perfectly made. The Thai iced tiki was a nice creamy drink that I also enjoyed. The vibe here is lively on the weekends, and tends to be busier. If you're lucky, you just might catch a DJ spinning great tunes outside. They do have a fair amount of indoor seating as well as outdoor patio seating. I love sitting in the hanging egg chair whenever its available. Great photo opp! I absolutely love tiki drinks. We always make it a point to come here when we are in town. I've been trying different drinks on the menu. They've all been fantastic. My favorite is the jungle bird. On a late Saturday afternoon in September, we popped in for a drink or two at this bar. The inside was packed with people around the bar area. We were able to obtain a drink menu off the bar to decide on a refreshment or two- the drinks are tiki like style, so most of them are on the sweet playful side. Most drinks start at 14 dollars. We decided we better quickly order before the next wave of guest arrived- the bartender was kind in attending to us two, before the mass of groups poured in. Drinks were made quickly and to the menu specifications. Given the mass amount of people- large groups, that consist of bachelorette parties, we decided to grab one refreshment and hit the road. So what is the atmosphere is like- it is definitely a place to visit if you are the party mood rather than the relaxation mood- the music is loud as well as the crowd. The seating is not made for relaxing. Although the bar offers super cute seating at the bar- bar stools over tiki like statues. Plus there are high tables, a room for groups with bench seating, a comfy seating area with swing chair, and a lot of seating for cooler days on the patio. No food offered at this bar- just drinks. Parking can be challenging in this area- especially during the summer time as close to the beach and in the funk zone that consist of a lot of bars, restaurants and shops. With that said, there is street parking a small city lot around the corner. If you are in to tiki drinks, worth a stop for a drink or two if you are in the mood. read more

While Santa Barbara isn't a city I visit frequently, I find myself here every few years and certainly take the time to explore its beauty, great weather and excellent restaurant and bar offerings. I had Test Pilot on my list from about 3 years ago, but it was closed on the day I attempted to visit. Fast forward to 2025 and a successful visit occurred and it was absolutely worth the visit. Though I unfortunately cannot recall the name of the bartender who served us, we not only were served fantastic craft cocktails but were treated to some great conversation and friendly interactions. The venue itself is small but extremely comfortable. But the drinks were amazing. I love a good Mezcal Negroni and I probably had one of the best ones I've ever had here. In fact, I had two! I highly recommend Test Pilot for any craft cocktail seekers. You won't be disappointed. read more

This bar is meant to be a tropical little oasis serving handcrafted drinks with cool twists. We had the ube piña colada and the Thai tea. Who doesn't want to mix boba and alcohol into one drink right! The names of these drinks sounded so good, so we decided to check it out on a busy Saturday night. I made it to the bar area and waited about 5 min to be asked what I'd like to order (this isn't an issue as it was a weekend and they were busy)! The bartender made our drinks in front of me and this is where I got a bit disappointed. The entire cup was filled with ice, mind you I love crushed ice but if I spending $16 on a drink please give me a decent amount of a drink. I got our drinks and sat down to taste them, I was hoping the ube piña colada would have a nice mix of ube, coconut and pineapple. Unfortunately I didn't really get any of those flavors coming through. The Thai tea also didn't have any resemblance to a non alcoholic Thai tea. The popping boba was also on top of the ice and was a nice little treat. They have a wide menu, it's possible we just didn't get the right drinks for ourselves. Others have had wonderful experiences here and you might too. However, this wasn't for us. read more

These cocktails are awesome!!! So yummy and beautiful! If it's a friends birthday, I suggest getting a Montenegro for Two as it's served in a pineapple and it super cute! They also have really great mocktails for sober friends! The staff there were patient in helping me choose a drink and made them pretty fast without sacrificing taste! read more

Located right next to the Granada Theater on the main drag, it looked to have undergone recent renovations and had a very chill but stylish ambiance. There was plenty of seating on a Wednesday night, and our bartender was a friendly young woman. The hubby got the spiced rum old fashioned, which had an ice cube with a lion's face etched onto it--a nice touch. I got one of their tiny Negronis, which came in a cute tiny mug and cost $5 (it sounded fun). Both tasted great and we had a nice time sipping our drinks and taking in the decor. Alas we had to be on our way so couldn't linger long, but we'd definitely love to stop by again the next time we're in town.

It's probably the only bar you can roll into by yourself as a woman and feel comfortable. As if things couldn't get any better, there's a treasure of a human in there who spins vinyl on Friday nights (maybe Saturdays also, but don't quote me) and you really shouldn't miss that experience. Comfy and relaxing, and dim lighting. Drink menu was diverse. Great selection. From cocktails to all types of alcohol. With an average price range of $15. Bartender knew his craft. All drinks ordered were great! C for service. The service dept needs some help, and I get it, with one person serving 15+ people. It is impossible to provide a5 star service. Initially service was great with a smile when we first arrived @ 6 pm. But soon after the bar became super busy. The wait was 20-30 minutes for an order. It was time to leave. We asked for our check and it came non-itemized. If it was 2 or 4 drinks that would be fine, but we were party of 3 with over 10 drinks. Then we had to wait again after asking for an itemized check. Waiter stated they need to hand write as their "machine" was not working. That took more time than needed. Ahhhhhh.... Ah well.. you can't get it all. Hence the 3.5 stars. I recommend, to sit at the bar and maybe pay cash to avoid hurdles I experienced.

We were ready to walk out, but our drinks finally arrived. I suggested we ask for the check sooner than later, considering how long it took to get our drinks. (Others who arrived after us did not seem to have to wait as long as we did.) Moments later, the vibe completely turned around when the bartender blew a conch shell to award a patron a Ventiki fez, accomplished after drinking all 60 cocktails on their in-house passport. That energy really helped recapture any aloha we felt upon arriving and we ended up staying for hours and chatting with staff. The place redeemed itself. We promised to return with some friends shortly who were driving through Ventura. We stepped out to grab coffee while waiting for our friends to arrive. We were excited to show them this place. When our friends got there around 4pm, they received an incredibly cold greeting at the entrance. They sent us a text and we told them we were a block away having just picked up a coffee and heading their way. When we all arrived together, a bouncer was at the front stand, boorish and inhospitable... his immediate attitude was downright insulting. (He wasn't around when we were there earlier.) He had previously refused to seat our friends at a table for four--even though we were just a block away--demanded we throw away our coffees, and asked us for ID. (My husband and I are in our late 50s/early 60s, and friends late 40s.) We literally had just been there for a couple hours and spent a good amount of money. Sure, I understand places have policies, but this attitude was COMPLETELY different than when we were there earlier. The bouncer was a self-important jerk about the whole thing. We went from giving them a second chance after they rekindled the aloha spirit to being completely turned off by the bouncer's egomaniacal attitude. Again, 4pm Sunday, no line or anything. Not some nightclub. Utterly unnecessary brute at the front. Rude and completely uninviting customer service. We ended up going down the street to a local brewpub that welcomed us, no attitude, no carding, and they didn't bat an eye at our coffee cups. AND when we parted ways with our friends, they told us they swung by Ventiki to talk to the manager. The manager told them she supports her bouncer and was unapologetic. If there was a society for tiki lounges with a membership card, this place should have their card revoked. They are not worthy. Tearing up the fez passport I started and will never set foot in there again.

We both work in the restaurant industry, so we understand that larger parties can demand attention and that things don't always go perfectly. We tried to be patient and give the team the benefit of the doubt. However, after waiting more than 15 minutes without anyone checking on us, taking a drink order, or even acknowledging our table, we decided to leave. What made the experience especially frustrating was that the restaurant wasn't busy when we arrived. We never felt welcomed beyond being shown to our table, and ultimately it felt like our business wasn't valued. Hopefully this was just an off night, because the atmosphere and concept seemed like something we would have enjoyed. We'd be willing to give it another chance, but first impressions matter, and unfortunately this one missed the mark. Sadly, it looks like we definitely missed out on the famous Bowl for Two.

I ordered the Flaming Lips cocktail and it's such a fun one... I won't give it away, but yes, there are actual flames involved . Nobody plans to spend an evening in Bakersfield. You pass through it on the way to somewhere else…read more-- Mammoth, the Sequoias, the long flat grind up the 99 to Sacramento -- and if you stop at all, it's for gas or a bathroom or because your BMW's brakes have decided, somewhere around the Grapevine, that they'd rather not. Thank you, Weatherford BMW of Berkeley, for the near-death experience and, inadvertently, for one of the best nights out I've had in years. Stranded and waiting on repairs, we checked into The Padre, the only hotel in Bakersfield that feels like someone with a subscription to Dwell had a hand in it, and set out walking through a downtown that time has treated with more kindness than reputation suggests. There's a Woolworth's luncheonette still hanging on. There are old brick facades and wide sidewalks and the particular quiet of a Central Valley evening when the heat finally breaks. And then, on 18th Street, there is Tiki-Ko, and suddenly you are no longer in Bakersfield at all. You are, instead, inside someone's magnificent obsession. Tiki-Ko is a proper tiki bar -- not a tiki-themed cocktail lounge, not a place that bought some bamboo at a craft store and called it atmosphere, but a genuine, committed, floor-to-ceiling shrine to mid-century Polynesian fantasy. The carvings are real. The lighting is correct -- which is to say, barely there. The mugs are serious. There are pufferfish lamps and carved totems and the whole glorious taxonomy of tiki ephemera, accented here and there with a skate-culture edge that keeps it from feeling like a museum. It's reverent without being precious. The drinks are the real thing. Mai Tais built with actual orgeat. Zombies that earn the name. The bartenders make them with the kind of care and enthusiasm that tells you this isn't a gig -- it's a calling. They want you to be here. They want to talk about rum. They want you to try the Painkiller. In a city that most Angelenos regard as a punch line, somebody built a world-class cocktail bar and filled it with joy, and the regulars clearly know it. You will not plan a trip to Bakersfield. But if you find yourself there -- by mechanical failure, by accident, by the peculiar mercy of a bad brake job -- walk downtown. Find the tiki bar. I ordered two drinks to start for our table- (no cocktail servers here/not unusual for a small Tiki bar) I asked for a soda water- the bartender looked at me without a word- popped open a can of soda water and walked away. When he walked back by, I asked for a glass of ice- he said nothing and I got an eye-roll huff. I almost left. I don't think providing a glass with ice to pour your canned room temp soda water in, is too wacky an idea to be perturbed by the request. The female who took the order was friendly, smiled and was professional. We got a third cocktail- the Mai Tai. The grumpy bartender was friendlier this time. So, that helped. Maybe he felt overwhelmed and I threw off his groove by asking for water- then a glass... either way- being annoyed wasn't cool. The music.... Wasn't Tiki- it threw off the "Tiki Vibe" and made it feel typical small local bar that serves only Tiki drinks with some Tiki decor. It didn't take you to the land of Tiki- disappointed. Every meal was exceptional, and the service was consistently outstanding. From the moment we walked in, Daniel welcomed us with a warm smile that made us feel right at home. At our first breakfast, Taylor provided friendly, attentive service that set the tone for the rest of our visits. That evening, we enjoyed the cauliflower appetizer, beet & burrata salad, short rib grilled cheese and black tie burger. Every dish was absolutely delicious. On our second breakfast visit, Sandra took wonderful care of us. She is such an asset to Craft House--knowledgeable, personable, and genuinely welcoming. Sophia, who brought out our food several times, always greeted us with the biggest smile. You can tell she truly loves what she does. Lorenzo and Nora were also fantastic servers who helped make every visit memorable. Over four visits, we sampled several different entrées and breakfasts. The avocado toast and chorizo quesadilla were definite standouts, and every meal exceeded our expectations. A heartfelt thank you to the entire Craft House team for your incredible hospitality, exceptional service, and outstanding food. We can't wait to return!

The management here is terrible. There was six of us and we found a table and sat down outside. Two of the gentlemen in our group (70 year old Vietnam vets with a service dog) went in to buy drinks for our group. Beers were purchased at Test Pilot and a bottle of wine was purchased at the business next door. When they got back to the table, our waiter came and let us know that you could not drink anything from the business next door in their seating section. We said, ok we weren't aware of the rule since all the tables outside look like they were shared by both businesses. The gentlemen went back in to cancel the wine and they had already opened it. They were nice enough to let him take an unopened bottle in exchange so we could take it home. On his way out, the server gave him a very small free taste of wine and he brought it to the table. Our waiter reminded him he could not have any drinks from the place next door. He responded, that it was a gift, but no problem and drank it in one swallow. All of these exchanges were professional and polite on both sides. A few minutes later a manager with an attitude came to the table and asked if we had drank anything from next door. We started to explain what happened, and he yelled "IT'S A YES OR NO QUESTION!" We responded yes, and he demanded we leave and we did. There was no signage, no distinction between businesses as they share a parking lot. Covid restrictions make everything more difficult for everyone. This business could have been more compassionate in the misunderstanding, however his ego made no room for compassion. Too bad these 2 men sacrificed so much for this guy to treat them like 2nd class citizens. I would never go here again. I hope the owner of this establishment sees this and takes action. Coworkers and I visited The Test Pilot on a busy Friday night. This place was packed and the bar was busy. The bartender, Suzy, was hand crafting mixology and talking with guests. It was too loud for me to yell to get her attention, so I pulled a $100 bill from my wallet and waved it above the crowd. An old trick I use. Instincts took over as she stopped what she was doing and asked how she can take care of me. Help here is very good. I told her that i wasn't drinking this month, but I would enjoy a nice red wine, not too sweet. She suggested a glass and I repeated myself that I DID NOT want it to be too sweet, and asked her to confirm. Sometimes bartenders just don't listen. Not Suzy. She reassured me that this was not too sweet of a wine, and that she even enjoys it herself. She selected the perfect blend of grapes and tannins for my palate. My neighbor makes wine, and this was a pretty good one. Its clear they have recruited the most knowledgeable staff from the top bartender schools in the area. Colleagues and I enjoyed our drinks, the atmosphere, and each others company (except Bill. Bill is the worst) until last call. I drank 10 cans of wine. Will be back soon. read more

This place is fucking amazing!!!! The cocktails are beautiful and super tasty! While talking to the bartenders, they informed me that the rum they use is top notch and you can definitely tell too. The bartenders themselves are so welcoming and knowledgeable! They carry this delicious rum called Plantation Pineapple and they do this float on their version of a Painkiller and it's so fucking good. I love the decor and atmosphere too. Order the Painkiller with the float and then order 4 more. Get to know the bartenders because they fucking rule. Great place!
