I have taken my dogs to Dr. Nick for over twenty years now. His care and expertise are superb. His staff is super friendly and efficient. I am dealing with a 15-year-old miniature Aussie, a 12-year-old Yorkie, and a 13-year-old Chihuahua. I also have a daughter who is a shelter vet! She helps me out as much as she can but Dr. Nick is my go-to Vet when I have concerns or issues with their care as we have such a history with him. Dr. Nick, Rylan, and the staff at Blackhawk Vet are amazing. We've been taking our three sweet kitties there for 2.5 years. Every interaction is shown w/care. January 2, our 15-year old ragdoll, Tiffy was very sick with renal disease. Dr. Nick and Rylan walked us through procedures that we could care for her at home. Dr. Nick is very kind, yet straight-forward which is exactly what we wanted/needed. Our Tiffany passed a week later with sweetness and dignity. We will always love her so much. They checked-in with us and even offered to come in on a Sunday if we needed help. After her passing, they sent a beautiful white rosebud and vase and as well as a card that the whole office signed. They seem overall disorganized... I've come a couple times and always had to wait a long time. Also, medications weren't ready for pickup when they said they'd be. Why pay so much for bad service? The waiting room is also small and several dogs can be in it at once. read more

We have been seeing Dr. Nick for close to 20 years. He took care of our first cat when we moved here and has seen all of our pets ever since. First, he is able to examine dogs very well. He can obvserve and assess the situation very quickly without having to hold the dog in an uncomfortable position. He also talks with us to so that we can come up with a treatment plan that we are all happy with. After so many years, I know that if he is recommending a test or specialist etc, it is probably necessary. The staff is friendly and they all know their stuff. read more

We came here for our new puppies shots, each visit (2) was $250 totaling $500. The third round of shots we decided to shop around because this didn't seem right. Got quoted at 2 other vets for $45 per visit for shots $30 for shots $15 for the visit. I am very upset we spent all this money when it was uncalled for .... $70 just for them to give him the shots each time. Plus additional add ons that were given as if it was included. Very expensive vet! Our fault for not asking prices but believed we weren't going to get ripped off. read more

Dr. Nick is amazing. He's a "regular" guy who speaks honestly, plainly, and is extremely knowledgeable (he got his vet degree at UC DAvis...so yes). He's also very compassionate and kind. Dr Nick is a caring vet. He takes time to explain everything and has a love for his job. We lose our Golden, Cooper last DEC at age 11 & 9 months. We switched to BH VET after feeling like our other vet didn't even know ir name after 8 years of being with them. Dr Nick is knowable, doesn't waist your time or money. Cooper has spleen cancer and within 1 visits he nailed the diagnosis. His office checked on us during Coopers last month of life. We got a new puppy right after names Koda & Dr Nick has been wonderful with him. Like anything in life, you get what you pay foe. I see comments he's too $$, but your getting top notch vet care and expertise. My brother and sister-in-law usually bring their bernadoodle (half Bernese Mountain Dog, half poodle) to the Tassajara Veterinary Clinic, but when she came down with an ear infection a week or two ago she called them. They were too busy to take her, but said they highly recommended the Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital which, thankfully for us, was able to see her. Her ear was still bothering her yesterday, and she'd started refusing to eat, so my mom and I took her back in to see Dr. Nick. The front waiting area is very clean and comfortable. As other people brought their pets in, there was plenty of room for all of us to sit and visit and everybody, people and animals included, was very friendly. The girls behind the desk chatted with us and talked to Ellie (the dog) in a friendly manner, and got her weight taken and paperwork handled while we waited. When we were able to get into the exam room, Dr. Nick came in to examine Ellie's ears, which were so full of thick black hair it was hard for him to see anything. Ellie may seem big, but she's still a pup and she was very antsy about being examined. Dr. Nick was very gentle with her, speaking to her in a very reassuring tone of voice. His bedside manner with wiggly pups is excellent. She was so wiggly that we decided leave her so they could sedate her and give her a more thorough examination. Dr. Nick called to give us the good news; he'd found, and removed, three foxtails from her ears. We picked her up a couple of hours later when she was awake but still groggy. She lay down on the floor and refused to get up and walk outside with my mom no matter what she did. One of the girls from behind the desk offered to help and Ellie happily got up and walked out to the van with her. Ellie liked everybody here in spite of the fact that she wasn't feeling well, which is probably the best reference ever. The veterinarian and the staff treated her well and acted professionally with us. They gave her an antibiotic shot and sent us home with ear drops. We love Dr. Nick and Jen! We have been patients for years:) Originally, I met Dr. Nick when I had a diabetic cat that needed insulin shots twice a day. They were great about teaching me how to care for my kitty at home and what to do in the event of a diabetic emergency. My poor boy passed away after 18 years (just old age). Even in his death, Dr. Nick was so compassionate with me about losing my kitty. After some time, I got a Golden Retriever puppy. I needed to get him medically checked out after his adoption, get him neutered, get him up-to-date on shots, etc. and I wouldn't think of taking him anywhere else! We don't live especially close to Blackhawk but I don't care about the drive. All I care about is getting the best medical care for my dog. Just like the cat, the dog has some medical issues, mostly allergies. Dr. Nick is so helpful and patient diagnosing the skin allergies and finding solutions to help keep my baby comfortable and less itchy. My dog is one of the most important people in my life and I wouldn't trust him with just anybody. We highly recommend taking your fur-babies to see Dr. Nick! read more

May I suggest you stay away from this practice. My husband took our dog in to see Dr. Bricaud and he prescribed ear drops. My husband requested a written prescription and was told that the Dr. could not write a prescription and that they had to fill it in the office. I couldn't believe this so I called the office and was told the same thing. Any vet is capable of writing a prescription for simple, routine ear drops. Why be disingenuous? Clearly, they wanted us to pay them their inflated fee for the ear drops and not get them elsewhere for less. When I wrote an email explaining why we were leaving the practice and asking to be removed from their email list I received a response from the office which said I was no longer welcome and they would not provide care for my pet in the future. Someone should tell them that when a client is unhappy they should respond in a professional manner, take responsibility, be apologetic and consider the merits of the complaint rather than insulting the person. On the bright side, we saw Dr. Kang, at his HK office in Danville for her ear recheck and were extremely pleased with the staff's and Dr. Kang's caring, professional behavior, and resonable fee structure. Our dog still had an ear infection and Dr. Kang cleaned out the gunk in her ear and showed it to us. He then packed her ear with medication. I sure wish that had been done weeks before by Dr. Bricaud. I was assured, as a matter of course, that Dr. Kang always gives clients written prescriptions when requested. I rarely write negative reviews, instead I frequently go out of my way to complement service providers. I am sorry to feel the need to warn others. . read more

My 11 yr old Chocolate Lab came down with a case of conjunctivitis. Not sure if it was viral or allergic. Her eye was so swollen. We were looking for a vet close to home as I didn't want to make the drive all the way across town. So we Yelped and Blackhawk Vet had the best ratings. We were able to come in 1st thing in the morning. By the time we got in, the Dr. was,already reviewing our records from the previous vet. Wow! That's service! Dr. Nillsen was amazing. She was so outgoing and has an obvious love for animals. She always gave her expert opinion and didn't insist on anything we weren't comfortable with. Liar！Liar！！I took my puppy there few days ago for regular Vaccination. I received their mail said there were few needed and few recommended. I know I won't take him to the dog park or hiking, so I skipped the recommendations. I called to make the schedule for needed. I said very clear to make the appointment for those two requirements. But after I went there they still give him the recommended one!! No explanation on cost before the treatment !! I asked why there are two more unknown charges , they said they asked my kid, a 9yr old boy. They asked a little boy for vaccinations agreement? While I'm just few steps away at the front desk. But you know what's funny. My son said, she never talked to him. There is only another lady asked him if the dog has allergy or not, nothing about the vaccinations. When I questioned her, she apologized for making up the conversation between she and my son. And gave me the part of fund. Impatiently from beginning to the end. I don't care about the refund, but I just wanna a explanation how dare she lying to a kid and their irresponsibility. At the end She said will give me a call back regarding to clarify everything, since they already closed that night. But I didn't received anything after 3 days, until I got a mail said they decided to terminate the doctor-client relationship. Due to me and my Kids's behavior. Excuse me??! I'm so shocked！I don't think me and my kids did anything impolite. I went there for an explanations. They said that lady is busy, couldn't see us. And the doctor is on vacation.
