love this vet!! i bring both my cats here and they truly do care. i travel from another city just to come.

I've been waiting to do this review for a long time. It's been a year since my dog passed. And it's been very difficult to cope with. I didn't have the emotional strength to relive my experience. I still mourn him. Before his first assessment for treatment, knew my dog had a heart murmur. But because he was fine and showed no serious symptoms, I prolonged taking him to the vet. The time I decided to do so, i would travel one hour to this vet because I wanted him to have the best care and so I thought. On his first visit, they kept him for a few hours to do tests. When I got him back he was not the same. He all of a sudden to started to have fainting symptoms daily. He would collapse to the floor. I would rush him outside for first aid and sometimes give him mouth to mouth. It was scary. From that day forward his health went progressively down as he grew weaker and weaker. And the bills just got bigger and bigger. ImI was expected to take him every six months for sonogram (different location), x ray and bloodwork. I would joke and say I'm going to rename him Louie because that's what he's costing me. A LV bag every time. I love my dog dearly and wanted to do whatever I could to keep him going. But I couldn't help to think, did they do something to my dog sicker for profits? I know I can't make that claim unless I have proof. All I know is how sick he got after that first visit. On my last assessment, I told them I can't afford another x ray and sonogram (VEG). Just the bloodwork. So they did what they did and sent him out. There was no consultation of the findings which I thought was weird. I traveled an hour to bring him to this place, have spent thousands of dollars and that's it? He died two months later. I have to write this in case anyone has had the same experience. I don't want to be told you should have did this or that. Or maybe this and that. It's too late. I just wanted to share my experience in case someone has had the same. That's all. read more

I have only had good experiences with this vet! All the Doctors and Vet Techs are super sweet and always kind to my dog. The ladies up front are very friendly as well and I love that they know my dog when she walks in. I appreciate they do text communication as sometimes it's annoying to call offices so I love that they respond quickly on texts to questions and appointment concerns. Any dog had to have a procedure and they kept me informed of her progress via text while I was at work. Great service everytime I go, I usually don't have to wait long to be seen! read more

Wonderful people work here. They are communicative and friendly with people but even better with pets. When we had taken our ornery kitty elsewhere, we were assured that he would need to be put under in order to be worked on, but Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital staff were able to work with him while he was still conscious. When they found out that we were struggling to find somewhere to preform a pricey surgery (The only other location we found quoted us 7k for the operation), they were able to move around their schedule to get us in for a much more affordable rate. They absolutely care about the animals they work with and went above and beyond for us. read more

Best veterinary hospital hands down! Dr. Finkle and her awesome vet tech Macey handled my fearful (and reactive) dog Rexie with patience and utmost care. Rexie suffered from some back issues and was in a lot of pain. We always dread going to the vet because Rexie will nip when he's scared. Even though his muzzle fell off in the middle of the exam (my fault) Dr. Finkle and Macey were determined to finish the exam to get to the root of Rexie's pain. To make a long story short, Dr. Finkle was able to diagnose Rexie's issue and prescribe him the pain meds he needed. A week later, my doggo is back to being happy, active and pain free! I would not trust any other vet hospital with my fur baby. They run a professional establishment and you can tell they really do have a love for animals are are great at what they do. :) read more

The worst Vet I ever been! First of all they are racists! They don't like foreigners. If you have an accent they will make fun of you and try to take advantage of this! Second they are there just for the money! They don't care about your pet! My cat needs a special medication and they gave me the hardest time to get the prescription and order online to force you to buy from them. They excuse is that they don't know where the food is coming from. Are you serious right now? You really don't know Petco? PerSmart? Because of a stupid commission you won't ever have my business again. Customer service is extremely rude! Worst place I ever been! read more

I've been bringing my pitbull here since late 2020 and have had nothing but positive experiences. I was in the Army for a few years prior to moving back to Pleasanton and fortunately they offer military discount. Last year, my dog had 11 puppies and they had me bring her in with all 11 of them for initial wellness exams and first doses of vaccinations. I'm moving out of state now so I wanted to leave an honest review beforehand. My dog had her last vaccination update with them yesterday before we leave California and they squeezed me in for a same day appointment since I only have a couple days left here. I drive all the way from San Francisco to bring my pup here and I've been very happy with them. It started when all the vets in SF told me they were booked up for 1-2 months due to Covid. I decided to look further afield and randomly picked this place from Yelp. Am very glad I did! + lots of parking close to entrance + great covid policies, you call when you arrive and they'll come out to fetch your animal, then the vet will call you on phone + flexible and try to accommodate your animal. When my dog had an eye infection, they found a next day appointment for him. + have availability in general: they book appointments weeks out vs. months + relaxing experience - Pricy. I dropped $500 my first time here on check-up, a bunch of vaccinations, and flea/tick meds. Nothing stood out as expensive but it added up to a lot. Rabies titer test here is $719, a couple other places I called it is $450 or $325. read more

Cat is having accidents outside litter box and having blood in urine. $1,000 for the recommended diagnostic testing?! No thanks, let's try antibiotics and then go from there because then it's obviously crystals which then the treatment would be either prescription diet or surgery. Okay, let's try prescription food since antibiotics only helped a bit. No, the doctor won't prescribe food that could help treat my cat, still recommends the $1,000 diagnostic testing. During this time when people are not working I would hope that the vet would work with me. So now I have to try to find a vet who can simply help me get a prescription diet food for my cat. I do not recommend this vet. I'm willing to spend the money to try the treatments like antibiotics, pain meds, prescription food but I'm not going to shell out $1,000 which could still not even tell me what is exactly wrong with my cat. I'd rather try treatments and this place did not want to help treat my cat. read more

Lost a pup during a c-sectiOn. Not sure why we needed to get X-rays on a mom in labor who delivered one already. This caused a lost pup. Poor judgment on vet. Only cost me $3500. The value of that pup including tears and sadness to go along with it. Can't help but think there's more they could have done for that pup. Yeah it's time consuming to resesatate a pup, but that's your job. Otherwise it went well for the other pup who lived, and the 2nd pup that was born in the car. *** identify: The young blond girl with the white french bulldog named Ittybitty. I brought my cat here a month ago because she started With a retching stomach and cough. After 3 visits and over $900. Later she is just as sick as she was to begin with. There is no follow up whatsoever. They don't ever call to see how she's doing. I called and complained and still no call back. I'm forced to watch my poor cat suffer for over a month with no help and a big bill. Now I have to scramble to find another vet in a hurry because she's getting worse and it's over the Christmas holidays. Prices are outrageous and the only time I hear anything from them are emails to sell their products. They could care less about my poor little animal. We switched to Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital after our random and sad experience of having to put down our cat. They just happened to be open when our normal hospital where we board our cat was typically closed on the weekend. Once we experienced the amazing empathy and professionalism, we quickly decided to make the switch. Dogs, Cats, Hamsters, Lizards, all of the little creatures are welcome here- scales, fur, it doesn't matter. Out first visit here was a wonderful experience. I called to see if they treat reptiles (exotic pets), and fortunately they do. They are very polite and accommodating on the phone. Our bearded dragon needed his claws trimmed, so we scheduled a check up and trim. They are easy to find, located in a nice little shopping center with excellent restaurants, a health food store, and a few other nice shops. This was during Covid, so the techs and the vet came out to speak with us. These professionals are not only excellent with animals, but with kids too. They welcomed any questions, and really took their time with us. My nine year old loved the whole experience. Now our bearded dragon is in tip top shape with a new manicure. I would also like to add that it was fairly reasonable, which came as a relief. Thank You, Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital for taking great care of our pet. This used to be a great office, but maybe they changed their staff, or cant cope with covid, but our last visit was a disaster from start to finish. The whole telephoning to be let in/out was not working. Despite knowing our dogs are scared of other dogs, our pup was let out of the office into the face of another dog, without us getting any notice, so we were sat in our car a distance away. We had to rush over to scoop up our dog. When we got him back to the car we found he wasn't even clipped onto his leash properly. They weighed him incorrectly, and told us he had gone up by 50% in weight according to their records. We got a telling off for overfeeding our dog on the phone, while I repeatedly asked if they were sure - I mean he is a tiny dog, I think we would have noticed if he had put on that much weight. Strangely our scales say he weighs much the same as he ever did. So now we cant get his medication unless we take him back to be weighed again. Did they give him his vaccinations based on his real weight or the mistake they put on his record ? I'm scared to ask. That is one error too many. I don't feel I can trust them to take care of my dogs any longer. read more

When we called that evening, Manager Macee was not only professional, but caring. She was able to get an appointment for our cat the very next morning. Also, she contacted our regular vet to obtain Moon's records. Dr. Edelman was thorough and explained all of tests, results and possible causes. The only reason I haven't taken my cats here prior is we reside in Livermore, so we went to someone in our hometown. I am so happy with the service. Couldn't ask for more. My samoyed had squamous cell carcinoma that was diagnosed at another vet. I was referred to an oncologist in the south bay and was quoted an an and a leg. However, I was referred here by someone on a mom blog and I am forever grateful. First of all, I didn't have to forward any records as they prepared everything for the visit. The receptionists were all very helpful and pleasant. Dr E called and answered every question very calmly. I've never met him but his voice is very calming and non-judgmental. My Sammy had the cancer successfully amputated with a much more reasonable price. It was worth my hr drive what to come here. Due to covid, you can't go in but the Dr calls after each appt and calmly answers all questions unlike the oncologist and the original primary vet I went to. I highly recommend! read more

I am thrilled with PVH! I am a first time pet owner (Cat). I am grateful to have found PVH from the onset. I adopted my cat at the SPCA (Burlingame) and PVH offers a free Wellness check for adopted pets. That brought me in, but the customer service and professionalism (even in COVID-19) times is superb and the deciding factor to why I have stayed. As a first time cat owner, there is so much to learn. PVH has gone above and beyond to ensure my peace of mind, by answering all of my questions, checking in on my cat and giving her the best healthcare to keep her happy and well. Note: Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital was sold by Dr. Scharge (he retired) to some corporation. Ignore all reviews prior to 2017 because the entire staff is new except Beth at the front desk. Dr. Scharge did not tell anyone he retired so that the corporation that bought his practice could install new vets without losing customers (and keep the 5 star Yelp ratings.) Dr. Scharge always worked with other vets that came and went, so it took me a while to realize that this business had changed hands. Slimy on all parts (that he didn't say "I'm selling my practice' and the new vets didn't say, 'hey, did you know this is a new business?'.) The fees are even higher now after this change of hands. They have made quite a few careless mistakes with my pet's care. I've been confused and surprised by the vets' poor judgment. The review by the person whose cat was not tested for disease and so did not recover from tooth extraction is heartbreaking. Based on my experience here, I'm unfortunately not shocked that this happened. I don't feel confident using Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital any longer. read more

I don't really write reviews on yelp but this one, I had to. I was required to get an international travel certificate for my dog and I found this hospital on Google. When I was making an appointment, Suzanne was super friendly and helpful through phone and was told that the price for the travel certificate was $195 total and said they require a deposit of $72 to confirm the appointment and would charge the rest at the time of the appointment. When I showed up at my appointment, the front desk lady assuming to be Suzanne, treated me indifferently as an Asian with a little bit of accent. After the health check-up, I was told I would be charged $200, which I thought was the total price including the deposit I paid. Later, when I checked my bank account, they charged me $200 besides the deposit and I called them back, I assumed Suzanne was on the phone, and asked about the charge and she said "WE ADJUSTED OUR PRICE AFTER YOU MADE AN APPOINTMENT" What kind of nonsense is that and shouldn't I have been notified of that price change???!!!! And they are expensive, we can't leave there without a couple hundred dollar bill. The last one was up near $600, with no diagnosis determined. We found Pleasanton vet after losing our pet, Freddie, and having such a traumatizing experience at another Vet clinic in the area. The entire staff at PVH are wonderful! I love this vet. I have gone here since I got my dogs almost 5 years ago and they have been nothing but professional. Danielle and the other women at the front desk could not be nicer and are always so welcoming. I use Dr. Sharg and he has always given me good advice from regular issues like a stomach bug to chronic issues like my dogs pollen allergies. The prices are on the high end but you get what you pay for.. I am not about to cheap out on my dogs health are you? On another note - I have two Bijon-Havanese mixes who had eye staining like most white dogs do. I had a Bijon growing up who had horrible staining on his eyes and mouth that never went away. I was fearful that my current dogs would have the staining their whole lives as well but when I switched to the Royal Canin Duck and Potato formula from the vet their staining went away completely! I know this is a big issue for owners with little white dogs which is why I am writing this. I tried everything from wipes to edible pills and nothing worked.. turns out its something in the food that was causing the staining and whatever it is is not in this food.. I do not know how it works and I honestly dont care. My dogs faces are completely clear of staining and I am happy! read more

WoooooWeeeeee! Where to begin! This Veterinary is beyond extraordinary. Let me start with Beth at the front desk, this woman is the sweetest human being you will ever meet! She was very attentive & compassionate over the phone, that right there, speaks millions in regards to the office itself. In person, she was no different. The office is very clean & open. The exam rooms are a nice size, not cramped. We were scheduled with Dr Shapiro, she was delightful. Great listener, and did not try to oversell anything to us - THAT alone is HUUUUGE!!! She addressed the problem with our cat, & nothing more. I had also brought in our pooch for a check up, & it went extremely smooth. Got the meds/Rx for my two girls and done! The level of care & attention from this office, makes it top notch for our family. They are exactly what we needed. Will definitely recommend these guys to everyone :) read more

I honestly don't know how to put into words how incredible the staff here was at a moment in our family life when we really, really needed them. We came home from an athletic event with the kids to find our beloved puppy dying. Truth be told his puppy years were long behind him, but this wasn't something we were ready for by any means. We scooped him up and rushed him here late on a Saturday secretly hoping they could fix him. But it was not to be and they could not have been more compassionate and professional in how they conveyed the bad news to us. This was the first time my kids and, for what it's worth, our family ever had to suffer the loss of a beloved pet and I cannot begin to express how much the attending veterinarian and her staff cared for all of us in our time of need. Truthfully I don't know what it's like to bring a healthy pet here for a check-up but given the overwhelming compassion showed to my family when we needed it most, I can't possibly imagine it being any different. read more

Our family has been taking our pets here for many years, and we love the team here. In 2013 we lost our family dog and cat (both due to old age at different times) after wonderful care by Pleasanton Veterinary. They took such good care in keeping them healthy and living long lives, and when the time came, making them both comfortable as they reached their final days and weeks. When we had to take them in they took good care of us and our guys as we had to let them go. On a MUCH happier side of things, our animals from the time they were puppy/kittens took many trips here for various check ups and post cat fight repairs, and we always felt they were taken great care of. My cat will be a patient here as long as we're living near Pleasanton! read more

I had my lab puppy Murphy in recently to Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital and I happened to show Dr. Michael Engelsgjerd photos of what we thought were hives on our female laboratory retriever, Winter, who is under treatment at SAGE in Concord for an immune related gastrointestinal disease. THANK YOU DR. E.!! you definitely saved Winter's life by recognizing that the red blotches on her belly, head and face were not hives but instead were a serious blood vessel event! We immediately returned Winter to SAGE and they recognized this as vascularitis and started treatment stat! Winter is showing signs of improvement for this condition and we are hoping for a full recovery from the gastrointestinal disease too. We would have for sure lost Winter this past weekend if Dr. E had not been so knowledgeable and caring! XO! Patti read more

The staff at Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital were absolutely fantastic, especially Dr. Atkins. I had an emergency with my cat after getting off a flight at SFO. I was moving to the Bay area and needed to find a vet after the flight. My cat is 14 and did not respond well to the sedative. She was dehydrated, confused and very upset. I called the hospital and they told me to come in immediately. I was seen as soon as I walked in the door and Dr. Atkins was very detailed in her examination of my cat. She explained all possibilities to me as well as what tests/treatments should be pursued. After some fluids, food and rest, my cat started to come around and has since fully recovered. I can't thank the Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital staff enough for making me feel better in a very stressful situation and for taking such good care of my friend! read more

I can't say enough good things about Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital. My first experience with them was when I put my dog to sleep. It was one of the hardest days of my life and they were amazing. I initially brought my dog to them for an ultrasound sound because they were able to do a basic one at their office for a reasonable price. The hospital is currently undergoing a corporate takeover and my family was very negatively impacted by the amount of stress it has caused Dr. Godfrey. After receiving a very inappropriate voice-mail from the doctor, I followed up the office manager immediately. Which to no resolve ended up feeling like a waste of my time. We lost our family pet of eleven years through absolutely no fault of the clinic. However she did pass and my last memory of her passing is that of an argumentative, dismissive, unapologetic, self-righteous, stressed out Dr. Godfrey misplacing her angers in life on my family. The contents of the voice-mail were inexcusable, unprofessional and unsolicited. I've waited a very rational amount of time for an apology from the doctor. Though it seems the issue has either not been addressed or the doctor is unapologetic. Very disappointing experience and last memory to have of my dog and best friend. In response to Lee Ann C's comment: I don't want the office's sympathy. I would would like an apology from your unruly Veterinarian. A simple card with the words "I'm sorry" inscribed on the inside would have sufficed. Though it seems that Dr. Godfrey's ego takes precedence over her clients. I took time out of my day to meet with you for what? There are numerous ways to vent and as I stated before doing so publicly is not my first choice. I feel as though the women of this office don't understand what the word 'Accountability' means and I am quite honestly just plain tired of grown children thinking they deserve unwarranted respect. read more

We have been bringing our dog, named Red, to Pleasanton Vet Hospital for over 10 years. The entire staff is very caring and helpful. Beth and Danika, the Client Care Reps have always given us the best customer service. The care received at Pleasanton Vet Hospital helped us give Red a long and good life, even when he started to have health issues a few years ago. Yesterday, we brought Red, who was over 16-1/2 years, in for his final visit, as his long life was clearly coming to an end. Many thanks to Dr. Liz Sufit for carefully explaining the process of ending the pain and struggles of our old friend. Rips off Pet Parents. I called Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital, they convinced me to come in because of a "Free" first vet visit. I saw Dr. Michael Engelsgjerd. He handled my very fussy dog, and was very knowledgable about her issues. Something tipped me off when he pointed at the canine teeth cleaning chart and informed me that my dog needed this. Like a snake car repair shop they default to something you don't need and try to charge you for it. During the examination he said he would be taking some blood tests. I consented and they performed the tests. I went to the front to get some paperwork done and the lady at the front desk slapped me with a $289.20 vet bill, after they said it was "Free" and told me it was for the "senior vet fees" because she is over the age of 10. During the examination he DID NOT inform me of the extra costs, otherwise I would have walked out. I reluctantly paid for this. A few days later Dr. E. called me to inform me that my dog has Diabetes. He told me the only option was this medication and shots that will cost me $300/ month to keep my dog alive. I did not go for another consultation, and found an alternative for $30 at my local walmart. I can see people going to this establishment and getting ripped off because they want the best for their pets. I say save your money for treats for your dog and go elsewhere. read more
