The sides were really good. I enjoyed the brisket, but was alittle cold. They gave us the option of Lean or Moist cut. I got the moist cut but it was alittle too fatty. I was surprise it was too much for me given this is the cut i normally go for when eating Brisket. Still good though, but i would recommend getting the Lean cut. read more

It's Blacks!!! It's amazing and it is in Austin!!! My awesome hubby surprised me after a (long) day by driving to this location. We have been to Lockhart HQ and the NB location and are huge fans. Bland is the one word I would use to describe the BBQ from here. I first tried their BBQ when they catered for an event at UT Austin and didn't really like the brisket. However, I decided to give it another chance at the actual restaurant a few months later and regret spending my money on it. This time I got a sausage sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. Absolutely disgusting brisket. 70% fat and beyond overcooked. Some Culture Map Austin article tries saying this is way better than Terry Black's on Barton Springs. I can tell you Terry Black's is 10000x better and most people who I know will completely agree- with the whole family feud, I assume they must have paid off that publication for them to say that to try to tarnish the name of the younger ones. All the online ratings prove the point of Terry Black's being way better...Anyone who knows Texas bbq would say this is absolutely unacceptable for brisket. I actually ordered this thinking it was Terry Black's, but had a very open mind to trying this- after all, I lived in San Marcos and have been to Kent Black's as well. Just insanely dissapointed. My nerves were qualmed when I saw the Culture Map Austin hyping this up over Terry Black's-, but it seemed to be completely off base from my personal expierience. This brisket is much worse than any offering at Donn's, Bill Miller's, poke-e-jo's, etc. Sides were okay at best, but I'm going to pretty much fully judge BBQ based on the brisket. And with this, I'd say avoid this place with a 10 foot pole. I hear they don't even smoke on site and just bring in from Lockhart- maybe they just deliver the unwanted leftovers? Go to Rudy's even, or just really anywhere else in Austin. Too bad we don't have Mann's or Chislolm Trail up in north Austin anymore. Oh yeah , and I just realized how ruined everything else was from the repulsive fat drip from the brisket. Bag was broken from the grease and fat, along with it ruining everything else. I was in Austin and wanted some bbq, I didn't feel like waiting in line at that other place where you have to be up at 4 in the morning so I came here instead. I thought Texas prices were supposed to be more affordable but blacks was a little pricey. I ordered a medium extra cheddar Mac and cheese, 1lb of fatty brisket, and 1lb of the huge beef rib. They have brown bags for you to take as much bread, jalapeños, pickles, onions, and bbq sauce to go. I grabbed 6 slices of bread and some jalapenos. I brought the food back to the hotel since I was by myself . The fatty brisket here was not fatty at all, in fact it was kind of dry so I had to douse it in bbq sauce. The huge beef rib was so freaking salty, I got huge bites of rib wherever I was eating and it was not good at all. My favorite dish was the Mac and cheese but that could have been good anywhere. I probably won't come here again, and will probably go to another spot in austin. read more

Great Texas style BBQ. The food was good for the price. The brisket and smoked chicken were super tender. The sides were just okay. I highly recommend the street corn and slaw, the potato salad was mid at best. The dining area is intimate and cozy. It is a good alternative to other more famous restaurants if you don't want to wait in line for hours. Restaraunts don't stay open for 90 years without reason. Black's clearly has a formula which keeps customers coming back. The venue is very pleasant and family friendly with good outdoor seating areas for the restless ones! The brisket was moist with a nice smoke ring and smoke flavor. But that's where the flavors of the brisket stopped, sauces needed to be added to enhance the brisket flavors. This isn't to say the brisket was not flavorful, the bark didn't seem to have other flavors to the rub as other briskets I've sampled. The sausage was dry, but flavorful with a nice jalapeño spice which was not overwhelming or too spicy. It's possible the sausage was in the warmer too long causing the dryness. I'm not a big fan of beans, but I tried the Norma Jean Beans which were flavorful and tender which paired well with the brisket. And with you he two meat choices I had worked great with the meal. Try the Revolver Brewing for a crisp honey spiced ale to go with dinner. Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage . The service was friendly and what you would expect from a BBQ joint. read more

I need to stop claiming "This is the best bbq is had here in Texas" because each time I go somewhere new, I say that. But, I think this might be the best bbq I've had. We're from Dallas and drove down to Austin for the day and Blacks came highly recommended from everywhere. We made a few mistakes, which were all my fault, 1st we took our dog and it was extremely hot for him on the patio. 2nd, I didn't get the beef ribs. The brisket was very juicy and tender, I overbought but happy to do so to take it home. My daughter a picky eater absolutely loved the pulled pork. Although I did not have the ribs I think the shining star of my meal was the jalapeño cheddar sausage. I wish I ordered more of those. This spot has been on so many must try barbecue lists but we were so disappointed. While the beef rib was tender, it was way too salty. My boyfriend asked for moist brisket but it was really dry. The sausage tasted like a breakfast sausage. The mac and cheese however was really creamy and delicious. Our introduction to Texan Bbq couldn't get be better than this :) My friends and I went here to experience the bbq culture of this lone star state. This is our first stop and it did not disappoint. This establishment has been around for several decades and still growing stronger than ever because locals loves it and tourist alike, including us. The ambiance is great! It is basically a history musuem of this bbq joint with historical pictures and memorabilia from the past. It couldn't get Texas countrier than this since we were sitting on their wooden picnic tables while eating. The food were superb! From its beef rib bbq to its beef brisket. Their beef rib is outstanding which the meat falls apart from the bone. That marination of the meat feels like Mr. Blacks himself were serving us his goodies :) The brisket was phenomenal, but my only knocked on it.. it was pretty greasy and was not expecting that at all. We ordered their sides too.. Marshmallow sweet potato, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. Those trio of sides can be a league by its own. We stopped in on our way to the airport after a graduation weekend. Some members of our family had been here before but I hadn't. I'd been looking forward to trying the beef rib they all raved about but had a plane to catch. They do sell their meats cooked and frozen ready for take out which we did take on the plane and it arrived still frozen in San Diego. Be forewarned it is expensive. It was a slow Monday for them so they gave us a tour of the smoking room. See video. I arrived around 1:15 and there was no line. Of course this little shop around the corner of Guadalupe street is nothing like the huge locale they have in south Austin- but there's no line! The staff was super helpful and courteous. I ordered wayyyy more food than I could possibly consume on my own lol but hey! I was at Black's bbq!! No line!! So there are tables outside where I sat and I got the little take home boxes to pack up all that I ordered minus the small taste I took because I was "starving"! In all, I ordered : 3 slices of the greasy brisket (delish!) + 1 small jalapeño cheddar sausage (hot and tasty) and 1 pork rib (got the end and it was a bit dry: maybe with sauce it will be better) : and 2 small sides 1 of macaroni cheese (Yumm - had a craving!) and 1 of the marshmallow sweet potatoes (ultra sweet for me but my daughter will love them). So this place was a suggestion from someone else to someone else but hey sometimes those are the best suggestions ever. So the whole social distancing thing is okay here they do have tables clearly marked and out side seating as well were the people eating following those rules - no - but the staff at Blacks was by wearing masks, packaging their meals in containers as well as wrapping the meat up then placing it into separate bags. You get a cool souvenir cup for your soft drink. I had a single meat sandwich, their chopped beef was sweet and tangy I had two sides the "Double" Mac & Cheese and the Mexican Corn both very good. Do to the lack of inside social distancing places to sit the patio was a perfect choice. I'm looking forward to trying the other locations in the future. Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage: The Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage is a blend of coarse-ground premium pork and beef in a natural pork casing. The sausage had real cheddar cheese and fresh jalapeños (handpicked, not canned). Chicken: The chicken was a bit dry however did not lack the smokiness that one comes to expect from true Texas bbq. Macaroni & Cheese: The Macaroni and Cheese was fresh and extremely heavy with cheeses. Corn: The corn at this establishment has a unique taste, one of vinegar and slight notes of pepper. When I began my order for a sliced brisket sandwich I was told to order my sides. Stupidly, I assumed that the sides came with the sandwich so I ordered two sides and then to compound my mistake ordered two sides with my son's brisket sandwich. Since visiting another Black's location was craving another good round of BBQ. Brisket was standard. The beef rib is by far my favorite and a must have. The inside is a bit cramped, they have a decent outside area but with the summer heat inside was the way to go. As for sides got the Mac and cheese and the Mexican elite corn was delicious. The sweet tea was far from sweet, thought it was just a bad batch but both containers labeled sweet were a disappointment. And the lemonade was just watered down. I'll eventually try all the big name bbq joints in the city, but it's almost a crime to not prioritize Black's in your list. We came on a Saturday for lunch, and the line wasn't bad at all for quality bbq; maybe a 15 minute wait. Our party of four ordered the fatty and lean brisket, garlic sausage, beef rib, potato salad, and cole slaw. The fatty brisket was delicious, but the lean brisket was a pretty dry for my taste. The beef rib wasn't completely fall-off-the-bone tender, but can definitely scrape it off the bone with your fork and tasted great.
