There's so much good BBQ in Austin it's hard to hit them all. Lula Mae's is about a 5 minute drive from me and I finally crossed it off my list today when DoorDash sent me a 25% off coupon for pickup. Got a 2 meat plate for $15 before the coupon, and picked brisket (obviously) and pork chop, thanks to Yelp's recommendations. Both were very tasty, and it came with great mac & cheese and green beans. Had about half of the plate, so it's 2 meals easily for me. I was very pleasantly surprised with this item given that brisket is usually king at a BBQ shop in Texas. (Note: I did not get to try the brisket since I came too late in the evening and she was sold out. I'll return earlier next time.) The sausage is very nice and flavorful. The green beans were simmered until soft. The porkchop was rich and meaty...although I personally preferred the chicken over the porkchop. Lula Mae's tastes like your mama's home cooking. Got off the plane and wanted some Texas BBQ! What we discovered was not only great BBQ but serious hospitality to go with it. Unfortunately Angel (the owner) was out of Brisket, but to make up for it she gave us a free sample of everything else she had left. Clearly, Her mom named her appropriately. We left with a sandwich, some sausage, and smiles on our faces. We will most definitely stop in for Brisket on our way back to the airport at the end of our trip. This is the 15th consecutive year that my wife and I have visited Austin for a month long reprieve from our cold and snowy Canadian winters. This is the first time we tried Lula Mae's BBQ ... it is nothing short of fantastic. Wish we had found this place earlier. Lula Mae greeted us as if we were family, we told her it was our first visit, she sat us down and gave us samples of her smoked brisket, sausage and pork chops ... The brisket was "melt in your mouth" fantastic as was the sausage and pork chops. I ordered the three meat platter and my wife ordered the two meat platter, each included two sides. The meat portions were huge! Lula Mae's is inside the CITGO gas station store, her area is small and geared more for take out as evidenced by the customers who came in for brisket sandwiches while we were visiting. The place is easy to miss and not well signed so just look for the CITGO gas station on the corner of Airport Blvd & E 38 1/2 Street. The brisket and sausage were better than the old Texas Rib Kings that used to be on Burnet and Research and definitely better than The Saltlick BBQ because her BBQ is all about the smoke ... not the sauce. The brisket pulls apart with a fork! My wife would never eat brisket or sausage in the past ... she loved it at Lula Mae's, we had great food and a great visit, both provided by a wonderful lady. read more

This place is killer. It's different than the current Austin trend of heavy bark on the brisket, this is a more old school, style with more flavor. All of it has a lot of smoke flavor, especially the sausage. Hands down best sausage! Hope they stick around! read more

Yikes! My 1st visit was excellent, but this second visit (several months later) was disgusting. The mac and cheese tasted like they either used buttermilk or expired milk. Same for the desserts. The banana pudding especially tasted like it cake straight from the box, soggy, gross. The green beans are still decent but I'm not sure if I'll be returning. read more

The spot definitely throws you off as it's connected to a gas station. Stuffed in the corner was her spot, unfortunately for us we came towards the end of the night where we got the scraps. The smoke process that Glenn uses results in an aromatic smoke taste to your taste pallet that you would otherwise only be able to capture if you could smoke the pit like a pipe. Both the lean and moist cuts are satisfying. Tenderonie best describes the texture to your teeth. While the Brisket is my personal favorite I can note say enough about the sausage, pulled pork, poke chops, the tater salad, green beans, and mack and cheese. After eating the peach cobbler I had to excuse myself, I had a moment cause it brought back memories of my grandmother. Great food, great folks. Very nice lady with some delicious pork chop sandwich and peach cobbler. I finally decided to stop by there as I been craving BBQ Pork Chops and she's the only one in the area that has it on the menu. The size was very well proportioned for the price of $5.50 for the sandwich. Well worth the price. The pork chop was not over done nor dry. Was tender and moist but could use a bit more flavoring, however the smoking was perfect. She was nice enough to offer me some free peach cobbler. I'm very picky when it comes to cobbler and this was delicious enough for me to get some more next time. My review is only on what I bought and the customer service. She is Austin grown and black owned so I always try to support any black owned business. Make sure to stop by her location. It was a group of us from out of town who excitedly decided to go to Lula Mae's because it was highly recommended with having the best chicken in town. Being from out of town, we wanted to support a Black small business. Once we got to the restaurant, the first thing the man behind the counter said was, "Here are a lot of people coming in who did not order ahead." We told him we were from out of town and heard they had the best chicken. We also wanted to dine in. The man behind the counter commented about how hot it was in the restaurant. We told him we did not care because was hot everywhere. It was a record hot temperature outside, above 100 degrees. After we looked at the menu, one of the people in my party did not want to eat there. Due to that, we all left and the man that was behind the counter said, "Keep cool," as if we were the ones complaining about the heat when in fact it was him! As we were getting in our Uber, another person in the party said the man behind the counter was using profanity towards us. All in all, we never got to try the food. The service and hospitality were horrible! I would never suggest anyone from out of town to go there. My advice to the management at Lula Mae's? Update your website if you are not going to allow people to dine in as well as if you want people to call ahead! I have NEVER experienced such disrespect from a small business before and I know Ms. Lula Mae is turning over in her grave! You all should be ashamed of yourselves! Get it together! read more

This is hands down some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Got the brisket and asked to have some of the burnt ends included. Delicious! Also got the sausage and a side of Mac and cheese. I live very close by and had seen this place recommended on my neighborhood Facebook. It's awesome to have a woman-owned bbq spot. I ordered a lot of food for a work lunch. The brisket and sausage were great! It was all high quality meat. She uses store bought bbq sauce which is not great, but I don't put any on my meat anyway. It's hard for me to judge the sides because I don't like those types of sides from anywhere. My coworkers liked them a lot. I found this place while exploring local restaurants on yelp. Went over to pick up some lunch around 12- it's super close to the Mueller neighborhood. I met the owner as she handed me a sample of a smoked turkey leg that melted in my mouth! This was my first visit so I wanted to try my usual BBQ go-to items. I ordered a two meat plate with brisket and chicken. The portion of chicken was an entire quarter on the bone. While she was cutting my brisket, the owner gave me a few samples of the brisket, showing me how the way you cut the meat impacts the tenderness of the bite! She also gave me a taste of the sausage which I didn't even order- delicious! The sides of green beans and mac and cheese were very tasty, and the portion of food was too much for me to finish for lunch. I'm looking forward to finishing the rest later.
