I visited here one Sunday just before driving back to Houston. I've only been to their original location before I visited here, but that was many years ago. On this visit, I was probably the 3rd customer, so there were plenty of seating options. The ordering and menu were simple, and they cut all the meat on a center wood block next to the serving line. We chose moist brisket, 2 links of sausage (1 original, 1 jalapeño), half rack pork ribs, Mac n cheese, and corn. The food was all delicious as I expected, and I much preferred the original sausage, as opposed to jalapeño, but their sausage links are small with a small diameter as well... sadly. The service is nearly non-existent after you receive your food. Their to-go boxes are near where you pick up your food, so in most instances, there would be little additional interaction required from customers to the staff. Overall, I enjoyed my visit. I still feel they don't have a well-oiled machine like some other places in town, but they have a lot of potential. read more

I order on the 19 of feb server Defauilt . I order a pork rib combo plate for $19.49. THE plate was supposed to be 1/2 lb. of ribs I got TWO ribs and a bone (it had no meat just a bone). That 10.00 a rib. also, no mac and cheese and no silverware. I am retired and I have been in the restaurant business for over 50 years and without a doubt this was the worst meal that was supposed to be great. This was my first time visiting and I was pleasantly surprised! The restaurant was mostly empty and all the food was ready to be eaten! So we got our food immediately. The meat Carver was super helpful and generous with asking questions about what kind of meat we would want and size of portion etc. I got a sausage, a Dino rib, yams, and macaroni for sides and a sweet tea in the souvenir cup. The sides were so good as was the rib. I didn't care for the sausage. The sides were much better than Terry Blacks, the rib was pretty close but I prefer Blacks over all! My first time ever trying Texas BBQ and it did not disappoint! We got here around 6:45pm on a Saturday, and the line wasn't too long! We waited about 15-20 min to order. The mac n cheese side is so popular that apparently people literally ask for GALLONS of it at a time. My boyfriend and I split the Giant Beef Rib and the Beef Brisket. We also got the Mac n Cheese, Peach Cobbler, and Banana Pudding. Oh man...Texan BBQ is really something alright! It is so different from any other BBQ I've ever had. The meet, first of all is GIANT, like in the name. The meat and fat melt into your mouth like butter...just....WOW, what a truly decadent feeling. The rib is $26 for one rib, but it is HUGE. Just bursting with flavor, juice, and fat. The peach cobbler and banana pudding were the perfect sweet flavor to complement that savory saltiness of the meat. I actually enjoyed going back and forth between the flavors. This place is more of a local experience than tourist, but I think that's what makes this place so great. My husband and I were so excited to try this place. HOWEVER, it was HORRIBLE! We picked it up and went straight back to our hotel (about 2 miles away) to eat it. It was cold, the green beans are rubbery, and the chopped beef was oily and tasted burned. Black's at 3110 Guadalupe in Austin used to be the best bbq in town. I live way up in Northwest Austin so I don't get down that way very often. Wife and I ate there today at about 3:30pm. Ordered 4 pork spareribs, 1 Small and 1 Med side, and 2 cokes. The bill was over $60 which would have been ok except the pork ribs were tiny with mostly bone and barely any meat at all. And the ribs were way overcooked. All that juicy fat had been rendered out and the small scraps of meat left behind were tough as boot leather. Huge disappointment. I'll go there again in a couple of weeks to see if today was just a bad day for them. I usually just order pork spareribs but I'll grab some brisket with pork ribs next time and compare it to previous visits. I'll also make a run down to the original Black's BBQ Location in Lockhart TX to see if their quality issues are the same. FYI, the original Black's BBQ in Lockhart TX smokes and hauls bbq to their location on Guadalupe in Austin because the Guadalupe location doesn't have the equipment to do their own smoking. That setup has worked well over the years. read more

Was in town recently for the UT-UGA game and decided to undertake a BBQ tour of Austin and surrounds. Context: I grew up in TX and went to school in Austin. I've had plenty of BBQ both within and without TX. I did not try all of the spots that I wanted to this trip in Austin, notably missing out on Terry Black's, Interstellar, and LeRoy and Lewis, amongst others. I am judging BBQ relative to all other BBQ out there, not just vs TX-style or Austin BBQ. This Black's has a great location, with the smell of smoke greeting you as you open the door. Prices are very reasonable, creating an excellent value. Brisket - super smoke, one of the best in this area, with a tremendous smoke ring. Tad on the dry side. Nice bark, decent flavor. Tender. Excellent brisket overall. Turkey - best smoke flavor of any turkey I tried. Solid flavor. Jalapeno cheddar sausage - very good. Loved the snap and the flavor. A bit on the dry side. Very disappointing! While visiting friends in Austin we had time for one meal that wasn't planned. We picked Black's based on its reputation, history, and ratings. I don't know if it's living on its laurels or we caught them on a bad day, but this was far from good barbecue. I went with the lean brisket, pork ribs, and pulled pork. My wife had the half chicken. We rounded out with the typical BBQ sides: beans, cole slaw, and potato salad. The brisket was dry and almost cold - lukewarm at best. The ribs were good, but overcooked to fall-off-the-bone doneness, and the pulled pork was completely tasteless and barely warm from the start. To give them some juice we unfortunately decided that we'd have to add sauce, conveniently available from two steel containers on the sidebar. But the sauce was cold, as in, kept in a cooler every night and put out cold every day. That's a huge mistake in a barbecue restaurant, where the high-fat proteins must be kept warm to hot from kitchen to tongue. So we dipped our dry brisket into the cold sauce, then our drying ribs, then the nearly cold pulled pork, and they went from being lukewarm and bland to being cold and bad. The quality was not quite to the level of even some of the large bbq chains like Rudy's or Dickey's (and no, that is not good). There was a decent crowd for a Friday lunch, the inside tables almost full, and a short line at the counter. For the locals this is probably a routine thing, and they know what to expect. For those of us traveling hundreds of miles to get some "authentic Central Texas barbecue", this place is grossly overrated and easily bested by truly good barbecue much closer to home. read more

New to Texas, new to Austin, and first time eating bbq locally and what a bomb! We had a short business trip this week so could only tried 2 of them. This is the first one. To be honest, American bbq is never my thing but sure, since I am in Austin. I was blew away. We ordered brisket, beef rib, pork rib, grilled chicken (replacement for the sold out chicken breast). The fatty brisket was the best I've ever had. Juicy, soft and the marinate and I've never tasted the same here in the bayarea. The beef rib meat is not falling off the bone like Terry Blacks, which was the 2nd bbq shop. Also, comparing to TB, I wonder if this restaurants uses any liquid smoke? Blacks was everything it was touted to be. Quintessential Texas bbq, replete with gorgeous, crispy bark, soft processed bread slices, and dill chip pickles. One sauce which can be doctored up with their bottled hot sauces like Chipotle mustard and ghost pepper. My favorite item of the meats was the "lean" brisket. Smoky, juicy, barky with a little fat. Very tasty. Pulled pork was the same. Pork spare ribs were good but not great. The sides, extra cheddar macn cheese was very good. Street corn was tasty but lacked the salty cotija cheese and the pinto beans were bean perfection. Is it better than Franklins? I think it is. This was a fairly good BBQ restaurant. I had placed the order online for lunch and it was ready within 5min. I was not expecting the sandwich to be deconstructed, though I admired the option of putting as many/little onions as I pleased. They provide you with a bun, 4 slices of white bread, meat of choice, a bag of onions, and a bag of pickles with BBQ sauce on the side. The sandwich was pretty good as was the Mac & cheese. They don't make things like they used to, but either Black's got it right early on or they perfected their recipes over several generations. Whatever they did to this Sausage, they need to keep doing. I didn't get the hype about sausage until I had theirs! The Pork Ribs were not my favorite - they were a little dried out, but I don't know whether to blame the shipping or my oven. That said, the smoke is substantial and the flavor is still very good. The Beef Ribs, wow! Every bite was marbled and dripping. The best Brisket and I've had Snow's. This one has a fabulous fat cap and the meat is a marvel. Thanks a lot, Black's. I enjoyed visiting the Original Black's BBQ. Sadly, I don't think it is on the same level as Terry Blacks. Brisket was better than most and jalapeño sausage was slightly above average. Their mac n cheese made the meal. Very creamy and good! Not much seating and like was mainly outside with no menus for you to see until you're up next. Music created an old-school, southern vibe which was fun. With that being said...If you want a shorter line, go to Black's. Well, we really wanted to go to Franklin's BBQ while here in Austin but you simply cannot get into Franklin's unless you are willing to queue up at the crack of dawn (seriously!) and hope that they don't run out of food by the time it's your turn to get in....if indeed you ever make it to the front of the line while the place is open. Not for me. We settled on Black's as there was no line to get in and we heard that this was pretty good BBQ. And pretty good it was. The concept is: you order at the counter and then move yourself further down the counter to select how much meat you want at which point the meat server cuts and weighs out what you've selected from the array of meats before you. So you are paying by the pound of meat. I chose the pork ribs and was able to select how many ribs I wanted. The ribs were then weighed. You then select the sides you want which are purchased a la carte. While I don't love counter service, I liked that I could select the amount of food I wanted. Portions in places like this are often more than I can eat which is fine if I am at home and can bring back leftovers...but I really didn't want leftovers in my hotel refrigerator as it was unlikely I would ever eat them. The seating is at indoor picnic-style tables. They serve soft drinks and a couple of local beers. I tried a Shiner blonde and liked it. My pork ribs were quite good. Not the very best I have had but very good. I ordered one side: mac and cheese, and it was creamy and delicious. They offer you sliced bread along with your BBQ which is something I have encountered at other BBQ places in the south. One of my friends got a (as in singular) beef rib...one that was indeed very meaty and Flintstone-esque. She loved it and it was plenty of food. My other friend ordered the brisket sandwich and loved it. While it was not the Franklin's BBQ experience we had hoped for, this was just fine and dandy. For barbecue this good, there's hardly a line. You walk up to the counter and order your sides, drinks, and desserts. Slide your tray over and have your meat sliced in front of you. Brisket: The fatty brisket is succulent, tender, moist, and juicy. The long hours spent carefully tending the smoked meats deserves high praise. The texture is right in the sweet spot just before greasy. The connective tissue has melted into the meat. You are entering meat butter territory. The pink smoke ring runs along the long edge of the brisket. You can have as much pickles and onions as you like to counter the grease. Visiting Austin for a short time and wanted some real Texas barbecue. It's definitely a country vibe. Great country music... My husband, especially liked the song, "big John.!" This is our first time in Texas so I can't really tell if it's authentic Texas barbecue or not but the locals tell us it is. I love that you go in and order your sides first and then you go over to the butchers block and they weigh out whatever meat you want in front of you.
