I really enjoyed this place. It has a fun, hip atmosphere which I think is a welcome addition to Winthrop. The service was excellent- friendly and attentive (they let you sample the beer which was great) and the food came quickly. I had the ribs with baked beans and collard greens for sides. The ribs were good but I didn't get that WOW feeling I expected from all the hype. Still, ribs aren't my favorite thing so I'll take the blame for that. However, I did get the WOW feeling I was looking for when I sampled someone else's food. The BBQ chicken and chili mac and cheese were both awesome, as was the beer (described to me as an amber ale with notes of vanilla and was delicious). All in all a great experience and will definitely be going back! read more

This was my first time at the restaurant. I was greeted with some breakfast bread pudding that included bacon which immediately welcomed me to the restaurant. We were there for brunch, so I ordered the huevos rancheros, which did not disappoint. It was so tasty and the use of fritos instead of tortilla chips was amazing. I didn't partake, but my friends utilized their make your own bloody mary bar. They wouldn't stop talking about it. I ordered catering from Blackstrap this past weekend! We had a socially distanced BBQ in our backyard. Not only was the food ready right on time but packed very well so could travel easily in my car. Everyone was asking where is this BBQ from? It was a huge hit. We ordered bulk meats and bulk sides. Kate was very helpful with letting me know the exact amount to order depending on the size of our crowd and what we wanted. It was the perfect amount. The Ribs are always a hit. Burnt ends never disappoint. One of my favorites are the sweet mash and their coleslaw are just to die for. We also got cornbread, corn and bacon salad, pulled pork, and pulled chicken. Everything was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. Their homemade BBQ sauces you may want to bathe in. They are too good and taste amazing on anything. Went there last night with the family - we have 2 little ones (6 and 1), so we need to choose wisely when it comes to dining out. We've been meaning to check this place out for a while....and I'm so glad we did. It's a little hole-in-the wall with minimal seating, menu on the chalkboard wall all around you. Very cool and casual atmosphere, though it's small with only 3 tables and some window bar seating....more of a takeout joint than a restaurant. Food: Onion rings and fried pickles were unreal. Burnt ends were insane. Dry rub ribs were very good - but were a little dry for my liking (but they were as advertised). The green beans were probably the best I've had in my life (is this possible??). Collards greens were a little firmer than my liking, but well prepared and tasty. I'm not a huge slaw fan, but had the Asian spicy slaw, and it was reeeeaally good. Whole experience was awesome. Food is right up there with southern and local bbq joints I've been to, and easily on par - if not better - than Blue Ribbon's grub (which I'm a huge fan of)....Food blows Red Bones out of the water. We easily found street parking, as there's not a lot going on around there at night on a Saturday. The only negative is that they don't have a liquor license. I love a cold draft with good bbq like this (is this place byob? I don't know). The tables are also a bit on the small side - but the portions were so generous, the tables probably felt smaller than they actually are. If they could do picnic tables in there some day, it would be helpful... The people there were awesome - very friendly, quick to help. I can't wait to go back to this place, or certainly grab takeout. Oh, and they take their catering very seriously btw....something I'll certainly consider next time there's a need. 5 stars for what it is - a small, casual BBQ joint which is probably better for takeout than dining in. We hired Kate and the folks at Blackstrap BBQ to cater catered a family celebration and were thrilled with the results. We wanted our menu to follow our casual theme, but deliver memorable food. Blackstrap delivered both great food and great service. Kate was quite helpful working out the menu and the delivery folks set the trays of food up in our ovens and on our buffet. The food from appetizers to BBQ and sides were terrific. The grilled vegetable platter was a hit as was the mango salsa. The main course of burnt ends of brisket was a favorite closely followed by the dry rubbed ribs and chicken. The sides were also a hit, especially the mac & cheese and green beans. I am here once a week without fail. I get the long dry rubbed ribs, smoked chicken, collard greens, & sweet potato mash. The ribs are unbelievable and the staff is super friendly and get your food right away. The only thin that sometimes bothers me is the inconsistently of the food. It's always good, don't get me wrong, but the ribs are either really fatty and greasy which I don't like or smoked for a little while longer and they are more dry and smoked with hardly any grease. The collard greens are sometimes super sweet which I like but then sometimes kind of bland. I'm not sure why its up and down like that but either way I'm obsessed with the place and I really dig the setting, style & decor. Great job guys read more

It was counter service but we got more service than a lot of full service restaurants we've been to. The staff was so friendly and helpful. I have been to Blackstrap a number of times now. I like to give a place a few tries and not base a review on one visit. Once again, I was very impressed by the food. the brisket is terrific. Its lean and tasty. The sausage is good. the kielbasa wrapped in bacon and deep fried with peppers and onions was fantastic. The sides I have had (slaw, mac and cheese, sweet potato salad, to name a few were delicious. The only thing I can think of where they could improve is on the cornbread. It never tastes fresh and seems a little stale/hard. The people there are very nice and friendly. It's not a fancy place as far as the decor is concerned, but I am not going there for the decor. I highly recommend Backstrap. I am getting hungry just writing about it. read more

I had to feed a conference of 60 people and I decided that barbecue would be a great idea and make everyone happy. Kate from blackstrap BBQ made it really easy. She suggested all the right menu items. She was really cool about making the order easy and delivering it right our dinner time. Food is absolutely delicious! Strolled in minutes after they closed their dining room but were super accommodating when I asked if we could get a table instead of sitting at the bar! Our server kept forgetting our refill orders but the food made up for it! I got the brisket sandwich that came with two sides; bbq sweet potato salad and Mac n cheese. Pros: Brisket had a great smoky flavor, sweet potato salad had a non traditional twist a tangy sauce instead your typical mayo, Mac n cheese was super cheesy!! Cons: wish they offered the brisket sandwich with either sliced or burnt ends (b.e) mine only came with burnt ends and was smothered in a unknown bbq sauce which I also wish was offered as an option. Also, I think they should specify what ingredients are in their more sophisticated sides (e.g. the bbq sweet potato salad has red and green bell peppers which was unpleasant for me personally) Overall very good and will definitely be coming back soon! read more

A RUDE bartender came over to us and basic told us that if we were not eating that he would have to take two chairs away. We were going to eat but not after having to deal with his bad attitude. We were so excited to learn about Blackstrap BBQ. We were confirmed Uncle Pete's fans and have been at a loss for ribs this side of the tunnel since his passing. We both had pork rib plates. His with corn and mac & cheese, mine with asian slaw and watermelon. We also ordered a side of onion rings. While we like dry rub, there was entirely too much, in fact, one of my pieces was from the end still had uncooked spice rub on it. The meat was also very dry and needed a lot more sauce than we brought home. The corn and mac & cheese were great. The asian slaw was over chopped and looked like purple mush - not particularly appetizing. The watermelon was not fresh, and had clearly been sitting out for some time (you know, when its dry on the outside and has the wrong kind of soft crunch). The onion rings probably would have been fine if we'd eaten at the restaurant, instead the breading was very hard and crunchy, something I'd never experienced with onion rings ever. We'll go back for a second chance taking my sister and her husband, who are certified BBQ judges, to guide us through. We really wanted to LOVE Blackstrap BBQ, sadly right now, can't say we even like it. read more

This is my haiku about Blackstrap BBQ: Happy, messy friends. Silent but for the chewing. Belches equal good. There is a story that goes with the haiku. We live in Winthrop, and we had some friends over to celebrate a birthday a little while ago. Birthday boy used to live in New Orleans, and he has a mean taste for good BBQ. We thought we would surprise him by having Blackstrap BBQ deliver us some yummy goodness. We went with the Single, Duo, and Trio Meat Plates (awesome idea). They come with 2 sides and ridiculously tasty cornbread. We ordered a little bit of everything: Shredded BBQ chicken, Carolina Style Pork, Brisket Ends, Pork Ribs and House Smoked Sausauge. For sides we ordered Creamed Sweet Corn, Collard Greens, Mashed Taters, Mac + Cheese and Baked Beans. I don't even know where to start. The Shredded Pork was extraordinary, I must say, but birthday boy's wife (who was the only one who ordered the Trio of Meat) practically made out with the Brisket Ends and the Smoked Sausage. The Collard Greens were delicious. The Creamed Corn was cozy and comforting. Everything was truly divine. The food was so freakin' good. Our birthday celebration turned into 6 people ferociously gnoshing, swiping forkfuls off of each other's plates, grunting when in need of napkins, belching without shame, and grinning stupidly at each other at how great life was at that very moment. Such goodness in one place is suspicious, I know. But it's true. I've witnessed it, and I plan to witness this culinary miracle again and again. Also, I need to mention how fantastically friendly and personable the people are who run this joint. From the manager to the guy who answered the phone to the gentleman who delivered our food--professional yet hip. LOVE. So please believe me when I say, yes, it's worth the trip. Enjoyed the trek to Winthrop to sample some delicious BBQ and sides. My girlfriend and I had the $30 Groupon, which we had to use in one visit so we ordered more than normal, but got to try a variety of BBQs: Shredded BBQ Chicken (saucy but not to excess), Carolina Pulled Pork (had some of the sauce from the chicken but did not seem dry, often a problem with the pulled pork), and Texas Brisket (tender). They had a large choice of sauces to compliment the BBQ including my personal favorite the Carolina Vinegar, other high notes were the Sweet BBQ and Hot BBQ. The sides were flavorful, including Baked Beans, Mac n Cheese, and Collard Greens (sweeter than I am used to, but still worth trying). In addition, we started with Fried Pickles, crispy and not too greasy complimenting the fresh pickles. They were a great price for 4.00, since there are a ton! Also tried the wings, decent but not my favorite. The service was excellent and this is definitely a place worth coming back to. Yes, Winthrop needs all the help it can get and this place really came to the rescue. We had the Texas Brisket, (phenomenal) Memphis Ribs, Smoked Chicken & Bbq'd fries, Mac & cheese , baked beans as sides. It's obvious that the proprieter(s) really did their homework. I recently used Blackstrap BBQ to cater an Architectural Lunch & Learn class in downtown Boston. The audience loved the change from the boring turkey sandwiches they were used to. They really liked the mac & cheese and pulled chicken but the hits were the smoked mushrooms and the spicy BBQ Sauce.
