Best Chicken Fried steak and Prime Rib for the best price anywhere. I live in Los Angeles but am from Texas and when I come home to visit family in Austin I always try to make it down to Blake's. It's a great place to go for really good food at unbelievable prices where you get to avoid all the hipsters, pretentious foodies, and over-inflated menu prices you find at all the trendy restaurants in the city. Stopped by just after closing time. They've adjusted their hours to an 8PM close time from 9PM. The lady at the front saw the disappointment in my eyes and had pity on me and allowed me to sneak in. So glad she did! I had the Chicken Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes and onion rings. It was hands-down the best Chicken Fried Chicken I've ever had!! It was piping hot and absolutely delicious! Stopping here on the way back to Houston from San Antonio. Tried out quite a few items on the menu. The rib eye and Hawaiian burger are outstanding. The steak are juicy and smelled awesomely smoked. This is a gem of a diner in a boulder field. Wouldn't have thought to stop here except for the Yelp reviews. They were spot on. Service was extremely good. My GF and I were there on a Sunday night about 8 PM. The place was packed. Still we were promptly waited on and treated like we were the only diners in the restaurant. Because of the positive Yelp reviews, we ordered fried zucchini for an appetizer. It is a must for anyone stopping here. I had a Blackjack cheeseburger. It was fresh, meat was cooked perfectly, and bun seemed like it was local bakery made. Meet was coated with black pepper before it was grilled. Was awesome. Small town cafe feel with sweet wait staff wanting to please. Goal was to meet some friends coming out of Houston and this was our pick. Let me start by saying the majority of everything on the menu is fried. Even if you don't select one of the many fried options, you will smell like you did; so, be aware. We started with fried pickles and they were great. The homemade ranch is excellent. My girlfriends had the recommended chicken fried steak and said it was delicious. They also enjoyed the fried okra. I tried the catfish, which you can get grilled if you prefer. I should have asked if it was farm raised catfish as that is how it tasted. The hush puppies were awesome and the onion rings were wonderful; however, very salty. I would go back and would have considered a 4-star review; however, took an unusual length of time to get seated and as I mentioned the catfish, which was also recommended didn't WOW me. read more

3/24/19- Sunday lunch. Blake's seems to be the place to go after church on Sunday. Had to wait 10 minutes or so to get a table. I was surprised when the hostess told us they had a table in the smoking section but no smokers yet. Drinks ordered at menu delivery. My wife ordered a burger and onion rings and I had the BLT sandwich with onion rings and a cup or enchilada soup. Soup was delicious. Creamy and spicy. Could have been hotter but still yummy. Wife raved about the charbroiled burger. The BLT was a BLT. Nothing to write home to Mom about. Onion rings were plentiful and crisp. Everything was reasonably priced. Nice dining and good food. Love this place! It's a hole in the wall that's definitely worth checking out. It wasn't very busy when I went this time.. Even when it's packed the wait for your order doesn't take long. The prices are reasonable and the food is always FRESH! I recommend the chicken tenders and the onion brick. It's very clean for the grungy bar look it has, so are the restrooms. Lots of space for big parties and small sections for dates and small families. The waitress I had both times I've gone were super friendly and gave us recommendations for food and locals places to check out non food wise. This is an average place to eat. I have been there twice. Once I had the chicken fried steak and the other time I had ordered off the kids menu. There is nothing super spectacular about the food but it does taste good. Lots of people have recommended to me to get the burgers there. Went there for 1st time last Thursday. Service was excellent, front staff found table quickly and we were seated. Waitress at table within 2mins for drink order. Water and tea was cold and fresh. Ordered Patty Melt with home style fries. Folks it was good Eatin' wife ordered hamburger with onion rings. Neither could finish food. It was good, super tasty and fresh and hot. Atmosphere was cowboy steak house. They still have a smoking section across the Restuarant. It's okay. Food was great. Meeting family there Wednesday night again. Don't let the "cafe" in the name fool you. We came here and got a huge lunch! I got the pot roast, which was the special of the day, and it was delicious with zucchini and mashed potatoes. I didn't try the steak selection after viewing the menu. I felt the safer bet would be their Southwestern burger. The half-pound Patty with pepper jack cheese and very fresh lettuce big chop tomatoes and big piece of onion made the burger taste very fresh and homemade it was almost too big for the bun. No problem with the taste it was delicious the service was super nice and it's a good spot to stop at if you're hungry in in Luling for some reason. read more

Living here in Luling for about 8 months now and have eaten at Blake's a handful of times. It can be hit or miss on the weekdays but go Saturday night or Sunday and the food is bound to be good. Hawaiian Burger, Catfish and Chicken fried chicken have been good choices. Today me and my wife sat down for Sunday dinner. Kyree was our server and he provided great service! This place is quintessential southern food to me. I came here for a rehearsal dinner for a wedding out at Zedler Mill. Typically this is one of my favorite places to eat in the area. The food is generally good and prices are very reasonable. However, my last two trips here have been met with less than stellar experiences. There are no worse words for a diner to hear, after spending time looking at the menu or having come to the restaurant for something specific, only to be told, after ordering, "sorry but we are out of that..." In my case, it was a Cheesesteak sandwich. I only assume that what they were out of was the thinly sliced meat used for the sandwich. Now I know that Blake's serves steaks, prime rib, fresh bread, cheese for burgers, etc so I'm pretty sure they had the ingredients necessary to put a cheesesteak together. We ordered the fried zucchini and it was amazing! I got the patty melt. The burger was cooked perfectly and I am picky about that, but it lacked any distinguishing flavor. I wouldn't get it again just for that, but because it was still good I would try something else from the menu. My husband got the Hawaiian burger and he thought it was good and that it was flavorful. My son got a corn dog and the waitress had the foresight to ask us if he could have the ice cream before bringing it out. The portions were ample but not absurd and the price was cheaper than Whataburger and the food, obviously better. The bread was wonderful, but I didn't like that instead of real butter they offered "butter spread". The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. If I'm ever in the area again we will be stopping in to eat here again! I have no problem recommending this restaurant to anyone else. read more

I honestly expected this place to be simply okay. It was actually really good. I enjoyed my steak very much so. The flavor was very good. And cooked just to my liking. Our family really enjoyed this place - not fancy but great atmosphere. My oldest son had the chicken fried steak - it was huge! - And he really liked it. Chicken gumbo was good and spicey. This is probably the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. Me and my friends were very excited to try this place after doing some googling for a decent place. Our waitress Lenore was very helpful in deciding on what meals to order. Then, as the food is served by the staff, we find out they'd mixed up the order. Shortly after, my friend notices that there was pink lipstick on her cup of Dr pepper after she had already taken a few sips of of. We are all shocked and disgusted over it. Then as our other find is cutting her steak, she pulls a hair out of her fork. After all this, we had lost our appetite and were ready to leave. Our waitress calls over the manager to let her know about the situation. She then goes to defend that no one wears that color there and that she is surprised herself. She returns with "the top favorite dessert" as an apology for our experience. By this point, we have no intention of consuming anything else from that restaurant. A simple apology and perhaps a discount of the meal would have been more than suffice for our inconvenience. There was no reason to call us the worst customers. A tip for the manager, accountably and respect is key for any position in management for a business. Huge disappointment. read more

We really enjoyed our meal. I ordered the small ribeye steak and it was cooked exactly to my liking. It was tender & delicious. Don't expect a steakhouse steak, but this was more like a well-seasoned home style dinner steak. Compliments to the chef on a steak cooked to perfection the first time! Also, my husband stated his burger was the best burger he had eaten in a long time. This place has good food for a decent price.
