Two trivial repairs, done quickly, and now the big one--a replacement of the creaking and antiquated system. Everyone from the office staff, Ron (who inspected and did the proposal), to Eric and his crew (who did the installation) was a pleasure to work with. The crew was timely, cheerful, and meticulous. I've only heard from friends and acquaintances about their services and none of them had any complaints. Service was fast and efficient. The one thing that I do want to say though is, if you ever walk past their business, BE CAREFUL. Their drivers come out really fast and a friend of mine almost got hit by a driver zooming out. I understand if someone's in a rush and needs to get to an appointment fast... but as a pedestrian on the sidewalk, I think we have the right of way. As a home owner, a real estate agent, and as a property investor, I've used Blake's Heating & Air on nearly a dozen properties in the past three years. The few unfortunate times I've had to use another company for one reason or another, I've been very disappointed. While the servicemen with Blake's have consistently been professional, timely, and most importantly competent, other companies I've had the misfortune of working with seemed to only deliver inflated bills, "half fixed" projects, or people who just didn't have their act together. Every time I need my HVAC repaired I call Blakes. I own a shop in downtown Davis, and climate control is extremely important for my business (my fish might die if it gets too hot or cold). One time I called in the middle of heatwave and of course they were slammed! I was terrified that I would not be able to get help. I calmly explained the situation and they were out within 24 hours. Our HVAC unit is on top of the store, and the poor Blakes technician had to stand out there cleaning our HVAC in the 100+ degree weather. I was tossing ice cold bottles of water up to him, but he fixed the problem and my AC was up and running in no time. Today my heating component broke and Blakes was out within the same day and fixed my heater very quickly. While I can't speak to the price that they charge as my landlord pays the bill, I can attest to the great service. I feel people run into problems when they start yelling at business over the phone. Calmly explain your situation and I'm sure Blakes will help you the best they can. read more

I am renting a condo which had hydronic heating system. It stopped working, and my landlord called 3 plumbers before blakes. They either knew plumbing or heating but not both. One that knew about both pointed to a filing motor and quioted 2000$ for replacement. Then finally my landlord called Blake's. After painstakingly careful 2.5 hrs of detective work, they figured a stuck check valve was the issue, and fixed it. Charged 350$ a very reasonable fee for their time. They confirmed that no motor had failed, and rest of the parts were working fine. Touch wood.. our heating has been working great since then. I would highly recommend Blake's for their professionalism, honesty and expertise. read more

They were recommended for a leak in my HVAC. They came out twice and the leak was not fixed. They did do some great maintenance work. The service person said they would only charge me $97.00 for the first visit, but the charge came out as $170. for the first visit. It took only about 20 minutes to blow out the pipe to the outside drain. I called their office and asked about the charge. The office person said the billing was in the mail, and charged to my credit card. Asked if I wanted an email copy, I said yes. She sent the billing charge on my credit card, not a description of the work. She asked if I got a yellow billing paper, I didn't get that either time. In addition, this was early August. The billing that was supposed to be in the mail never came. She said she would find out and give me an explanation for the difference in billing. She left a voicemail a week later that said, the charge was correct. No explanation for why. If there was a mistake, I could understand it if she explained it. But the inconsistencies in what she promised to do and follow through left me distrusting them. End result, I am placing the review on Yelp and on the BBB too. I would like a written apology along with the yellow billing work order I have never received. The unit is in a rental and I need the billing description for my taxes. read more

I don't know how their technicians treat customers, but considering how I was treated on the phone there's no way I'm doing business with these people. Over the years I have utilized the services of a handful of AC/Heating repair companies. I usually feel like I have been ripped off when they hand me the bill. The AC in my house was not working a couple of weeks ago. Had this been the middle of summer, I would have done what I usually do, called around and hired the company with the first available service time. When it is 100 degrees out, I never would take the time to get multiple estimates. Whatever company could come out first would get the job. Since the weather was in the 70's this past week and was projected to be so for a few weeks, it allowed me time to actually get several estimates. I was shocked at what a couple of companies suggested needed to be done. Full replacement of blower motor/txv valve/control board/etc. The highest bid (Blake's) was for $1,640.34 as a STARTING point and suggested "Unforeseen repairs will be bid at the time of discovery." One of the other companies that came out (Jaguar) reset two tripped switches on the blower fan, found a leak on the TXV valve (the valve was replaced by heat another company JUST LAST YEAR!) by spraying it with soapy water and fixed it by tightening the nut. They recharged the system with coolant and for a few hundred dollars, my AC is running again. I'm not saying Blake's was trying to rip me off, but it is inarguable that had I not received other bids, Blake's would have cost me at LEAST (since their quote was just a starting point) $1,300 more than what I ended up spending to have my AC fixed. read more

Unfortunately the 3rd time is not a charm. Called Blake's again for my heater that went out. Scheduled a time and they showed up on the later side but diagnosed the problem quickly which was a bad control board. The tech left and went back to the shop (only about 1 1/2 miles away) and picked up a new one and installed it. He told me it was $85 for the service call plus the part but didn't quote me the price. I figured it was around $100 so I wasn't too concerned and trusted them based on my past experiences. Well, the bill came and the part was $365!! I checked the part number online and its available for under $100 including tax and shipping -- That's retail pricing and they get it at wholesale. When I called to complain, they said that's what the part costs and when I told them it was less than $100 online they said part of the cost was to install it too. Crappy response since they didn't say that initially and didn't bill me that way either. I was billed $85 for labor and $365 for parts + tax. It would have been nice to know the cost ahead of time (since it was significant) so I could decide whether to have them do the repair, consider a new replacement heater since age is becoming a factor, or do the repair myself and save $250+. I understand they need to make some money on the part too, but $365 for a part I can get at retail for less than $100 is excessive to say the least. If there was an additional charge to install the part, they should have told me that too or at least billed me that way. Really disappointed with this whole experience and annoyed I now have to find another local repair shop I can trust. Giving two stars only because I did have very positive experiences in the past. read more

( Blake's doesn't charge commissions. ) The estimator and the crew that did the install were prompt, knowledgeable, and answered all my questions thoroughly. We had water dripping from our secondary pipe. We were charged for the diagnostics and unclogging by pushing air. It didn't solve the problem. The technician came again the day after and changed the tubing (added a p-trap) to solve the problem, but it didn't fix the problem again. We were told that we have to install a secondary tray which will cost around $1800, but it wasn't worth it and we better change the entire system. I called another company because I was really skeptical. They quickly figured the problem was a clog inside the furnace and not the tubings, unclogged it and finished the job in 15 min, and $70. The fix was so minimal, I was not even charged for that (I was only charged for the diagnostics.). I called Blake's, and explained the situation. They asked me to send the other company's report and they'll call me back, which they never did. I cannot recommend this company at all. The only reason I give them two stars is because the technician himself was really polite and nice. read more

I feel that I dodged a bullet! A/C quit yesterday, one of the hottest days of the year, and it got up to 90 degrees in my place. Called Blake's Heating and Air Conditioning in Davis last night and left a message. They returned my call at 7:30 this morning and they had a man here in Woodland at 8:30! It was an easy fix...blown fuse. Took less than 20 minutes to fix. I have used this company in the past and I highly recommend them. I gave the fellow some zucchinis and cucumbers from my garden. If I could give zero stars I would have . I work in a dental office in Davis. During a rush/busy day , three men came in and said we are here to change your filters. They reeked of cigarette smoke. No introduction or common courtesy. They opened the return and proceeded to vacuum dust while we had patients in the chair and the front office was attempting to have conversations with patients. When they were "finished" I looked up at the return and noticed it was still open ! I informed one of the men that the return was still open and he says " oh I'll fix that for you." My heater went out in the evening. I changed the thermostat and it still did not work. So i called several company's but noone would come out for 3 days. That would not work for me because I have an elderly mother and it was cold in my house so when I called they said they would be have somebody out as soon as possible to fix my heater the gentleman came out about 4:15 that afternoon after I got off from work help me fix the heater and didn't charge me an arm and a leg I would go back to these guys to get my air conditioning heater fix this summer I would recommend them to anybody just call them they are great great great great great great great read more

I have used Blake's twice in the last year and both experiences were stellar! The first time I called them because it was 108 degrees and my air conditioner didn't work. I had a senior dog with severe cardiac disease and she was not handling the heat. I was initially told they were booked until the following week but when I told them about my dog, the woman on the phone took my number and said she would see what she could do. Within 3 minutes I got a call back and within half an hour the technician arrived to service my unit. The dog and I took a drive in the air conditioned car and when it became clear the unit was fried, I was given an early appointment for replacement. The work was completed in a timely and professional manner, and the bill matched the estimate exactly. The second call was for my rental property. The 55yr old furnace was finally dead and since the ac unit was pretty old, Mark recommended we replace all of the system. He offered me several options of how to work it: Replace both and leave in original location, replace heater only and move it to the attic, or replace both units and put the heater in the attic, giving me a larger space for a bathroom renovation that was already underway. We went with the whole system moved to the attic and scheduled for 10 days later. The crew arrived right on time and worked neatly and quickly to bring our system up to code and into the attic. They left the property completely clear of debris from the work, even vacuuming up all the dust and rust that the old machine was dropping. Very professional crew, very professional install, I would definitely call Blake's if I have any more HVAC needs. read more

I manage a hotel in Davis. Today we had clients in our meeting room and the A/C died and of course the outside temperature is pushing 100 F. I called Blake's with the unlikely hopes of a same day appointment so late in the day. To my surprise/luck they were able send someone out and actually showed up in about 45 minutes! The service technician, James, was friendly and helpful. He diagnosed and fixed the problem in about 15 minutes. They only charge a flat fee to diagnose the problem and then tell you the issue and the cost for parts/labor. We lucked out this time and only needed a freon charge. Next time we need service, I will call them again. read more

My entire Central Heat and Air system needed to be replaced and these guys did a fantastic job. Personable, friendly and considerate, they were extra careful not to let my dogs out and accommodated their needs. Attention to detail, and exceptional clean-up at job end. I felt they went out of their way to make me comfortable with their in and outs and noise. Also, they took special care with all the little details and seemed to take pride in their work. What they did and the new equipment and how to operate everything was explained patiently and in a way I could understand. I was especially impressed with the care and thoroughness in cleaning up. All I can tell you is that Mark Blake stands behind the work his company does regardless of how the manufacturer may have screwed up. Without going into to too much detail he called me and told me an issue I had with a just recently out of warranty failure would be covered by him and he would go after the manufacturer after the fact. If I could leave 6 stars I would!! We just moved to Davis and had to have the 1985 HVAC in our house replaced. Everyone recommended Blake's. They were very responsive, Mark personally came out to estimate, and provided us with a fair quote that had a few different options so we can decide what works best based on our needs. Kaitlin was great on email, clarified some questions, and got us scheduled. On the day of our install, Blake's showed up on time, everyone was professional, completed the work, and did a great job cleaning up. But did you know they worked on dryer vents too?! After getting our washer and dryer installed, we discovered that our dryer vent did not go outside. The vent caused the dryer to overheat and get stop working. Also since this is a gas dryer, this means carbon monoxide is being released into the attached garage we go in and out of many times during the day. How this was missed by our home and city inspection, I have no idea!! After we realized that many of the companies that work on dryer vents are actually HVAC companies, we called Blake's (and yes we actually used the little magnet they gave us to find the number :-) Turns they do work on dryer vents too which was good news given we had a positive experience with our HVAC. Jean got a message to Brian, their General Manager, who came by when he was done with other work, and they managed to get us in the same day when one of their HVAC jobs ended early. Blake's has not only earned our trust but our gratitude - we thank everyone at Blake's for being so great to work with and doing great work.
