Dropped into Blank Street for a quick snack on a Saturday afternoon. The latte was hot and perfect for me - I asked for a vanilla latte so perfect amount of sweetness. When you enter you see a single register to order mirrored by a single barista station. Adjacent you have seating alone the outer wall of windows looking out, three sets of three high-top stools. It's kind of tight so not a gathering place. I order two simple coffees, one americano black and one candy cane hot, which I assumed was like a peppermint mocha. There was no taste to the candy cane coffee and she stated her Americano was very good either. I'm all about helping the little shops but if you can't make simple coffee such as these you don't stand much chance against the likes of DD or the Bucks. Do better! read more

Kind of fancy, but doesn't live up to its image or prices. I ordered a double espresso with a splash of steamed oat milk. The espresso was notably bitter with an over-the-top amount of acidity and a fruity flavor profile. Altogether, it's barely drinkable. As for their food, there was a limited selection of both sweet and savory pastries, all around $5 each. There was only one vegan option, which was a mushroom flatbread (not something that's universally appealing) and no gluten free options. I am not sure if this is normal, but they charged $1.75 extra for the splash of steamed oat milk that they added (at other shops I've not been charged). I will not be coming here again, but will be heading right down the street to either Starbucks (yes, a huge chain would be better) or the reigning coffee shop champ, Blackbird Coffee, where the vibes are just right. read more

Absolutely Horrible Experience, ordered a simple Hot Matcha Latte with almond milk and the barista gave me a matcha latte with pistachio syrup and I politely told him that it wasn't what I ordered and the barista rolled his eyes and said "well i'm just gonna throw it away then" in an extremely sassy and rude tone. I then said I can just give it to someone and so I gave it to someone in the cafe that might've wanted it and waited for the order to be remade. Then the barista called out my name again and said that it was ready and I walk out the cafe and took a sip of my "matcha latte with almond milk" and it's a REGULAR COFFEE. I was so upset because I dealt with the attitude of the barista and was being so patient and polite and all I got was the WRONG order and I spent MY OWN MONEY on something that wasn't even the right order that I PAYED FOR. The barista needs to be fired immediately. The barista was a white male that probably weighed over 200 pounds with brown hair and EXTREME ATTITUDE. The cashier was very polite but the barista purposely had to ruin the experience. The Blank Street on Charles Street is very deceptive in terms of the sizes of their drinks. They have a big cup and a small cup which they display as examples, but it turns out that they pour several of their "big" orders in the small cup anyways, without any explanation up front. When I asked, they told me that the big size only applies to other orders. This left me pretty curious about what the "small" order would be in my case. They should mention this to customers. She tried to point out where I could find the information, but it just written on a clear cup behind some other stuff on a counter. Even when she pointed, I couldn't see it, and the cashier was rude. They offer 8oz and 12oz sizes and yes cheaper than Starbucks, as the news articles said and what the company seems to aim to do based on whatever business model. And I thought it was pretty good! I am used to having microwaved eggs in my egg and cheese sandwiches at most coffee shops. But I have never eaten anything as bad as the egg and veggie sandwich at Blank Street. Obviously, the egg is microwaved, but there is also some very slimy, spinach, a mushy hash brown potato, and a roll the cannot hold up to any of these ingredients. You are left with one foul smelling sandwich that falls apart in your hands the moment you try to pick it up. so I threw the sandwich and also over seven dollars away. I've always found the coffee very good here and the other pastries acceptable, but do not try their sandwiches. I have never eaten anything as bad as this. read more

Steep prices, but the cold brew is just so rich and good. More of a "treat yourself" moment. Wish they had even larger sizes for it! Cocoa/caramel flavours really do come through without the overpowering sourness of some cold brews (e.g. Stumptown). Still, a nice balance -- enough mild acidic kick to make it a refreshing sip (opposed to something like Chameleon or Trader Joe's cold brew, which border on water). Consistently brewed, tastes great each time. Other drinks are extremely sweet -- iced pistachio latte was on par with Starbucks, sugar-wise. I'd either get two(!) extra shots or lessen the syrup when going for a specialty drink. Could not taste any espresso over the pistachio syrup. Even in early morning rushes with tons of Uber orders and a single person behind the counter, they are reasonably speedy and nice.
