Blarneys is what I think of when I think of a bar at the University of Minnesota. I've stopped here before and after countless sports games, concerts and trips to the U. The staff is fun and high energy, and the food is good bar food and drinks come out fast. This is my favorite place to stop before a concert at the nearby Varsity theater. Most recently we tried the nachos and they were surprisingly good on potato chips ... try it to believe it! They also have drink specials and Karaoke on Thursday nights. It gets pretty busy and was fun to stop in after a concert. read more

I do understand this is a college bar hangout but the floor was so disgusting. We could hear our shoes sticking to the floor as we walked to our table. The service and food were actually good. Our waitress was very nice and took care of us pretty quickly. The beer was good and cold. My husband had a black bean burger with a side salad. I had a quesadilla with black beans. It was hot and very good. I didn't care for the greens that came with it. It was the right time of day to be served quick early on a Saturday. It worked out perfectly to have a drink and quick bite to eat before a game. read more

Enjoyed this Dinkytown spot in MN! It is great for a quick bite & beverages. I loved the historic decor. They have a huge variety of signature shots! Whoop! Whoop! Go Gophers! MY adult daughter and I received a great big "Hello" from the guys behind the bar and a "what can we get you?" as we entered. We went belly up to the bar. I stopped at Blarney Pub & Grill on a Saturday early afternoon with two of my friends. We wanted to stop for a quick drink and appetizer and that is exactly what we got. We found a seat at a high top immediately as the bar was quiet at this time of day. Our waitress was great and gave us the perfect amount of attention. We all started off with drinks, I ordered an amaretto sour and it was SO tasty. We also decided to get the chicken tenders and the onion rings. The chicken tenders were super tasty and crispy, very yummy. The onion rings were not as good but still a fun appetizer. This place has a fun atmosphere and even had a few arcade games on the upstairs level. I will definitely be coming back here for more pre-dinner drinks! read more

Owned by Blarney Rubble, it's a watering hole for Minnesota students. Pretty cute Irish Pub that has pretty high prices right in the middle of the University District. Watch for the cops patrolling around here because they're always looking for underage people drinking or people drinking and driving. A lot of students that come here walk though, because it's close to all of the college housing. Lots of cute people coming in and out of here which I like. They could do a better job of showing all the soccer games I want them to see. And their food is nothing to write home about but the drinks are fine. Prices are a little high but you expect that in a college neighbourhood. The reason they don't get a higher rating is because the people working here are sometimes real jerks. So are some of the people that park out front so watch out. read more

After seeing the 2.5 star overall rating, I was skeptical about meeting a friend here. But here's the thing... it's a BAR, on a Big 10 college campus and that should set your expectations. What this place has going for it is a really prime location. Right off 4th St on 14th Ave, this gets you easily to Mariucci, TCF, or in my case... The Varsity Theatre. The interior is a pretty cool, pseudo Irish pub. There's whiskey barrels converted into high top tables in the central dining part of the bar. There are deep, cozy booths surrounded by lots of mahogany wood. The bar counter top has this pressed copper on top of it. It's all fairly attractive in a fake Irish sort of way. The food is decent bar fare. I ordered the Reuben and a Guinness (when in Rome ya know). The Guinness was poured in a proper two part fashion and delivered with a nice head that didn't overflow. The Reuben contained real roast corned beef. What I'm talking here is meat that's part of a "roast", not sliced, processed, and pressed lunch meat. That makes all the difference to me. Now, I wouldn't go here and order a steak or anything like that. But, if you're looking for a good Reuben and a proper pint before a game or an event on campus, you can do a lot worse. Terrible food complete with terrible service. I asked the bartender do green beer (after seeing a pitcher of it) and was told that no more is left. First reaction "okay, that's fine" because that happens. Minutes later I see a different bartender pouring green beer. It's not like I was being a rude customer. I mean they were a little busier than normal but come on. Also, I had to ask for Menus 3 times before we got them. They were also something I asked for in 15-20 minute intervals. Cute little Irish pub. Came to town for a concert at Varsity theater. Had an hour to kill before the concert and decided to get some beers and food. It took ten minutes after sitting at our table for the waitress to come greet/take our drink order. By the time we got our beers we had thirty minutes before our concert, with that kind of turnaround time it no longer felt appropriate to order food. The waitress was nice, however, I swear to god she was the only waitstaff working (aside from the bartender) and there were 14 tables full of people. Super unfortunate that we didn't even get to try their food due to a short waitstaff. Honestly, don't know if I would visit again unless I had a ton of time to kill read more

I have been to Blarney Pub & Grill time and time again, and it's basically the same every single time. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. Here are my takeaways: 1) Be prepared to be rubbed against by sweaty, drunk bodies that get way too close for comfort. I get it...not too much room and way too many people trying to dance all up on each other. That's how dance floors are supposed to be right? I can't say I feel comfortable when I can barely breathe, but if you're going to visit on a Friday or Saturday night, this is what you'll experience. My boyfriend and I were leaned up against a wall this past weekend, and we could feel the wall as well as the floor shaking, so it got pretty crazy. 2) The college crowd comes out to get down. If you're not somewhere in your 20s, this may not be the best place for you to go out and have a good time. Maybe on a weekday, but on the weekends, it is packed full of young Gophers or students/non-students. 3) Customer service here is hit or miss. I experienced a waitress who was a sweetheart several months ago. We talked about a guy that we both saw who seemed very drunk. I went to get him water, and she asked me about him to make sure he was alright. On another occasion, my boyfriend's brother was trying to purchase drinks for us and when he tried to get the bar tender's attention at the downstairs bar, the bartender ignored him. He asked for a White Russian and continuously was ignored by this guy even though the guy was just walking back and forth...he wasn't busy with anyone else...just felt like he wasn't going to take our order I guess. Luckily, the female bartender picked up that guy's slack and eventually came up to us. Needless to say, my boyfriend's brother was not too happy by the way he was treated. The drinks here are made pretty well. Not too boozy, not too watered down. I've never had a bad drink purchase here. 4) The bathroom lines are RIDICLOUS. I suggest if you want to use the bathroom to find a different place to go because the bathrooms, especially the ladies, are tough to maneuver to. 5) Finally, the downstairs smells like straight dirty wet socks. We had to hold our breath this past weekend because it smelt NAAAASTY. We didn't know where it was coming from, but no matter where you moved, it followed you. We couldn't take it anymore, so we decided to relocate back upstairs. So that's all ladies and gents. That is it. It's your typical college hang out spot, but prepared for some not so appealing things while there. Maybe the food tastes good? Who knows...I never see anyone purchase food there. read more

Meh. Eh. Okay. I've been here a few times during the day for beers and snacks. One thing that is consistent- adorable girls who are the worlds slowest servers. Painfully slow at times. I like attractive people as much as the next person but hate waiting unreasonably long for service. At no point should it take 25 minutes to get a beer because "the machine (computer) isn't working." Or 30+ minutes to get a bill even after being asked three times. The food is okay. I've tried a couple salads, a burger and their chicken strips. All acceptable, not exceptional in any way. They do have a nice selection of brews on tap- at least for my simple tastes. Overall, if you're in dinkytown, this is probably a pass unless you've got some serious time to commit. read more

Actually at risk of collapse, the dance floor on the main level is supported by pillars that wobble and are made of plywood, while the ceiling that is the main floor dance floor can be seen physically moving up and down in the bottom floor bar area when people are dancing above, 100% has to be a building violation, it's not really a matter of if it will collapse but when it will collapse. read more

I am never one to complain about the service at a restaurant, but our waitress we had was terrible. We ordered drinks and did not get them for 30 minutes. The whole time she was hugging people at other tables and I would see other waitresses bringing tables their drinks. When I asked her about our drinks, she said "the bartenders are switching" with a big attitude. We also ordered the fish n chips and when she delivered it to us there was no sauce. We asked about having tartar sauce and she said they were out. How are you suppose to eat fish without tartar sauce? Could have easily given a heads up. Blarney is always hit or miss. Blarney is all about the people you see there. The drink specials, imho, are average and the atmosphere so-so. Live music can be a blast. Thursdays is karaoke night and is definitely the most popular night of the week. 100% guaranteed you will see someone you know. However, this definitely turns into huge hords of girls jumping on stage to sing their rendition of Britney Spears. So if you're into that, then you should definitely go. Like I said before though, you go to Blarney because you know your friends (or at least my friends) will probably be there. Oh, and there is not really a whole lot of true "Irish" going on. Not only is this place disgusting, but when I was in college and WAS 21, the bouncer took my ID and denied my entrance saying that it wasn't me. It looked exactly like me but he claimed that "People come in here with their sister's IDs all the time." I had to call the police and have them come and make him give me my ID back. Blarney would probably prefer to be known as an Irish bar, but I list it as a Burger joint because that's what I've enjoyed there. Really enjoyed. Today marks my second visit, and it was a welcome distraction from half a dozen other lunch spots in Dinkytown. Not that I have anything against the other spots, but after eating Chinese for the fiftieth time, interspersed with tasty meat & potatoes from Steak Knife, good cheap Indian fare from Little Taj Mahal, and school food in Coffman Union, I sometimes crave another variety. Let me state right now that I am embarrassed by how often I eat out. My wife, a teacher, brings leftover rice and chicken in tupperware to her 28-minute break. Nobody has a right to eat as richly as we do in the US - in cost, I mean, not in the sense of a farmer's market - and these days will end soon for me as I return to school. Blarney's prices at are a bit steep for lunch, about $7.95 for a typical burger, but what a fine burger! High-grade beef done well with a tasty mix of spices and cheese on a fresh, unique bun. Not to rave about, I suppose, but I can't remember the last time I could still taste what was left of lunch an hour later and smile. The ambience is a la Kieran's or the Liffy - the Twin Cities has no shortage of Irish pubs - but with more vertical space and better lighting (like Brit's), and at lunch the place is empty. I suspect it's packed at 10 pm during the school year, being less than two blocks north of the U of MN East Bank, but I'm generally in bed by then. For a family guy, lunch can be the one private, care-free break between sunup and sundown. In a place like Blarney, with a fine burger and engaging novel, I all but forget my responsibilities. For those visiting after work, there is of course no shortage of import and domestic ale - but you can find that anywhere. It's the ambience and food that distinguishes this place. Cheap drinks ($3 Stolis, $3-4-5 beers) food specials, a shot wheel, and their latest happy hour gimmick is a pull-tab where your (reasonably priced) drink can be reduced to either half price or $.50. They also have Blingo on Mondays and Tuesday's which is fun because you can win drinks, shots, food or prizes. There's rumors that an all-you-can-drink mug special is coming to spice up your Thursday nights (RIP Baldy's) but hasn't been confirmed. read more

I've been to Blarney's several times during my college years. For a night out, for lunch, and for breakfast. To be truthful, the food is just right when you want nothing more than a usual burger or fatty, heart attack inducing cheese concoction. But other than that, there isn't much to be excited about. You'd get better "fayre" at one of the Irish pubs downtown. The live music is louder than a dance club on Saturday night. I had to scream across ten inches for my friend to barely hear what I was saying. Then there is the fact that this is a "bro bar" full to the brim of bros and their hoes. If I wanted to have such an experience, I'd go to one of the frat houses on University Ave. Then again, if that's your thing, have at it. I give this place one star instead of (barely) two because of a disturbing discovery. Some friends and I were there one Friday night. There was a two for one deal and I ordered Corona. The server brought our drinks in plastic cups and with one sip, I realized they had taken one bottle of Corona, spit it between the two cups and filled the rest with water... ...What the hell? If you have a 2 for 1 deal, then give me two beers for the price of one. Don't water down beers. You want to save money then don't offer deals you won't deliver on. How insulting. Who do you think you are? The only Irish thing about this bar is the Guinness and Harp. The rest is a frat fatale. read more

Since I am a college student I want to love Blarneys, but each time I go there, the only thing I am "in love" with is their cheap drinks. The main thing I do not like about it is how packed it gets on a Friday or Saturday night after about Midnight. I personally do not find pushing your way through a packed bar just use the bathroom as being fun. Even dancing kind of sticks because it is often so packed! As for people, on a Thur-Sat night, the crowd is mainly college students and is very cliquey. Full of obnoxious frat and sorority members thinking they is a big deal, but have no clue how hard reality will hit them once they graduate. Athletes beware, the place is full of jersey chasers! When I do go to Blarneys, it is for the nightlife. I have eaten at Blarneys a few times and the food has been fine, nothing to rave about. read more
