The build-your-own is a fantastic deal. You can get unlimited toppings and customize it fully. Being right by campus, it is usually busy and the line takes a while, but the food is worth it. The juices are mouth-watering. The staff are mostly college kids and do a good job with the large amount of people they serve. read more

This is probably one of the best fast food restaurants in Ames. Every time I have been there I have gotten my food in 10 minutes or less (even when there is a long line). The only down side is the pizza is sometimes burnt on the edges. If you are vegan or eat a plant based diet this is a great place for you. I typically get my pizza without cheese but they have a vegan cheese if you want to try it. They have a ton of vegetable options and I liked the balsamic and pesto drizzle you can add. Amazing thin crusted gluten free pizza. They seem to do a good job changing gloves and using separate toppings that have not been contaminated by gluten, so that's a plus too. If you love brick-oven pizza, you've got to try this place. The only complaint I have is that sometimes the line gets pretty out of control at the busy times like lunch, and sometimes I've had to walk out of there because of time constraints. And walking away from those wonderful smells is HARD! read more

Look this place is good don't get me wrong. It has a great location on Lincoln way and easy to walk/bike to from many different places. The inside is very trendy and clean with a good assortment of lemonade flavors (blood orange) and agua Fresca drinks. And yes the food is good and all but after eating at anther place I'm Ames that has now closed I realize that no wood fired pizza place will ever compare to Vesuvius pizza. Now, I will give it this. Blaze is much better than its competitor Smokin oak which is also located Lincoln way. Everything is just better. The atmosphere, the food itself and the fact that at blaze you can sit at the window and look out onto the street which is a lot less lonely if you come alone. Pizza is delicious, large variety of toppings that most other pizza places don't have. They're slow with the service though, i have waited in line for 20min before and it wasn't busy, just a couple people ahead of me. 3 stars because the place is always a mess. Their line is never clean, empIoyees touch their face with gloves on and proceed to make food, cashiers will go from touching money then throw a pair of gloves on to serve customers without washing hands in between. Even came in right when they opened and there was still trash from the day before, crumbs all over the floor etc. Overall I like the food but the place is filthy and it's only been open for like 6 months. Employees need to be retrained, management needs to be more proactive. It's painfully obvious. read more

Blaze is one of three pizza places within a block or so of each other on Lincoln Way in campustown. My wife and I think it's the best of the three, and we have taken to visiting here about once a week. The pizza here is made in one of those super-hot flame ovens and takes only a few minutes to cook. It has a vaguely European taste to it. The bottom come out slightly charred, but in our experience has never been burned. for $7.95, you can order, as we do, a "build your own" individual-sized pizza, with unlimited toppings chosen by you. My wife does vegetarian, but I load up on meat: Italian meatballs, sausage, bacon. To this I add, in addition to the usual mozzarella cheese, some ovalini mozzarella, chopped garlic, and sauteed onion. It's a good-lucking pizza, and half is always enough for me for lunch; the remaining half heats up nicely in an oven. Just recently the restaurant has added Dough Knots, little circular pieces of garlic pastry. They sell at 2 for $1.95 or 4 for $2.95; we ordered 4 of them for the first time at lunch this afternoon and liked them. In terms of price, Blaze is more expensive than the lunch special (two slices and unlimited pop for $5.50) offered at Jeff's Pizza, and indeed when I first starting coming here I figured that I would only use this place for splurges, but the quality of the food and the fact that I don't have to take whatever is available won us over. Service is always very friendly and efficient. The people here seem to go out of their way to make things as nice as possible for customers. This is my first time visiting, but not my first time eating brick fired pizza. With that being said I love the idea of build your own pizza. With the ability to customize your pizza to your exact mood at the time. The no charge for extra toppings is a great idea. I love the char on brick fired pies. The staff is friendly and helpful. The dining room and restrooms were very clean. There is a nice selection of beers served cold. I would of given 5 stars except of the noise level. My favorite pizza place in town. The crust is always just right and it is perfectly crispy. Their less is more approach is great but with the byo option you can have anything you like as well. I don't recommend overloading it though or the crust won't hold up. I always finish it with a little sea salt just to round it out. Yum! read more

This is probably the best pizza place in town. I frequent this with my family. Tonight a mishap happened when I was adding crushed red pepper. The lid was probably was not closed and my pizza was fully coated with pepper. While I was debating what to do Randy ( I think) approached my table and calmly said they will make a fresh pizza and took away my extremely spicy red pepper drenched pizza. I was pleasantly surprised that he noticed the mishap and proactively took steps to rectify it even before I could decide my next steps. I had piping new pizza delivered to my table. I could not have asked for more. Pizza of course as usual was awesome . Thank you every one especially Randy for turning what would have been a sour experience to a memorable one. read more

Ames location's staff is warm, welcoming, friendly, fun, and wants to make your Blaze pizza experience excellent! Our organization was the first to fundraise here at Blaze and that too was done A+ 5Star. Managers are great. From fresh pressed crust dough, fresh salad mixes, cheeses to choose, multiple meats, fresh gourmet of garden vegetables to toss on, and then to flickering flame of fire brings just minutes to the moments to be memorized by taste that tantalize. This is a very pedestrian location, below all the new apartments across from the memorial union, perfect for ISU students. Prices are comparable to other pizza places. The staff were the right combination of low-key and friendly. They made sure we understood their offers, and that they understood exactly what we wanted to order. It is an assembly-line-style build-your-own pizza or salad with many options of sauce, cheese and toppings. Classic and novelty choices are available. A vegetarian would find something satisfying here and there is a vegan cheese. More different meat options than most, as well, like both Italian or turkey meatball. The crust is thin and crisp, the way I like it. Service is quick and the pizza is delicious. Serve yourself fountain drinks. We could watch our pizzas cook by an open flame, as the name promises. Seating options are indoors, on the outdoor patio (for Lincoln Way people watching), or take it to-go. Just a heads-up, anytime you order a wood-fired pizza, you will probably have some char-grit under the crust. Great tasting food but really lacking at organization at the oven. Let me preface they are in their first month open but... We had 4 pizzas ordered and all was good till the pizzas went on the waiting rack to be put in the oven. This is where this place needs work. They had Zero system or organization on the order of pizzas coming in. Because of this dysfunction our last pizza came out 30 mins after our first. But only after I and the guy in front of me, had to step up and say WTF. Even though our first 2 pizzas were cold by the time all our pizzas came out they were tasty. It could be great but a revamp at the oven is needed. We will give them one more shot but I will be watching. SO CLOSE BUT FAILED on EXECUTION read more

Awesome pizza. Went there for lunch last week. I was amazed by the variety of toppings. Pizza was cooked fast. I barely got sat down and it was ready. My beverage was equally amazing. Blood orange lemonade. WOW!! I was like a kid trying pop for the first time. So good. Pizza and drink was around $10. Pizza was maybe 12-14 inches. It's thinner crust and it's cut into 6 slices. I am a hefty fellow and ate 4 pieces. They have little boxes to take home what you don't eat. Looking forward to going back. read more

The pizza was just average, but the service was outstanding and they deserve major kudos for that. We went for lunch on Saturday, graduation weekend, and they were absolutely slammed. The employees were really hustling, I never saw one of them even pause, and they were also polite and helpful at the same time. When I asked for vegan cheese, the employee VOLUNTEERED to change her gloves, and further down the line when I declined any meat options, the other employee offered to change his gloves. That's not going to prevent all contamination, of course - in any restaurant that serves meat and dairy, you have to presume some contamination - but I appreciated it very much. read more
