I had the pollo guisado and everything about it was great, including the rice and black beans. For those missing some Filipino food. There aren't much around. However, the cuisine here calls out to the Spanish influence in Filipino cuisine. Order the pollo guisado and chicharon (aka lechon kawali). You'll know what mean. Been there several times after discovering their macaroni salad. The best I have ever had. Went there to get the salad and was pleasantly surprised. Small store with very narrow isles but they are packed with inventory and a good selection of foods and spices. Hot food is available and looks good. Part of the Big Lots plaza on Bloomingdale, it was easy to find. I will have to admit, for a meat market, this place was super clean and aesthetic. I have never been to a meat market where it was so clean. It was very easy to navigate and it was very simple to find things there. We were just browsing since we were at Big Lots and didn't buy anything but this place definitely surprised us. They also have a cafe that you can order food and get dessert as well. Sometimes you don't have to look far to find good Latin food at an affordable price. I've been to this market many times in the past to get food from their buffet counter. It was hit or miss back then because they didn't always have what I wanted. Admittedly, I haven't returned until recently. I noticed that they have a larger buffet and more of a variety of freshly prepared foods such as lechon, pollo guisado, beef stew, picadillo, and so much more. They even had a selection of different rice dishes, and not just white or yellow rice. I was so happy to see the Cuban fried rice. It's a mix of salt pork, mixed veggies, and green onions. It was full of flavor. I also got some of their yucca and lechon with a slice of crispy skin (which I love). My box was filled high with all kinds of goodness. All of this for under $8. I can't remember the exact price but it was super affordable. I shared it with my mother and we still had some left over for another day. Everything was wonderful! This market is located at the old Kings Row shopping center near the post office. It's very popular with the locals. My experiences have been nothing but pleasant. This last Thursday evening was the best service I've had there. The nice lady behind the counter was very helpful and sweet. They have also added a couple of tables and chairs where you can sit and have your cafe con leche. We go there sometimes just to have an espresso after eating at Stein and Vine. Mom also loves the Cuban boniatillo (sweet potato) candy. They sell the individually wrapped ones near the check out counter. I think they are the ones that are made in Hialeah. I also saw some packaged Puerto Rican mallorca pastries with the powdered sugar packets. I'm using this as my excuse to go back again soon. It will be another fun gift for mom. read more

"Please ma'am, stop!" I never thought these words would come out of me when somebody would be dishing my plate... but they did. This Latin Supermarket is in the same shopping center of Big Lots and the US Post office. They sell vegetables, meats, frozen latin delights and they have a hot food bar with different kind of meats (lechon, picadillo, goat, fish, pepper steak, etc) and side dishes (mangu, yucca frita, boiled yucca, salads, beans,). With lunch starting at $5.50 and the lady feeding you as if it were your last meal, it is one of the best hidden values in the area. You can also get empanadas and cuban sandwiches. There are not tables in the restaurant so you have to take it to go... I must confess I tried to take it home but as soon I got to my car I opened that tight box and started digging. I found a side dish at the end, buried under the mountain of meat that angel served so selflessly. Definitely, two people can eat with one plate. Dance to the Latin music they play while you look at the gorgeous food they have, and stimulate all your senses at this little warm place. read more

I soo appreciate a good ethnic market and this place is done nicely with a great selection of Latin foods and a nice deli selection of cooked items. I love the fresh baked bread a personal weakness of mine. The market itself isn't huge but they have it all. I love shopping at specific markets for ethnic foods because you can't find certain things at a regular grocery store. They offer a wide range of different Latin foods and dry/can goods. Customer beware and check your receipt before leaving. I was double-charged for an item and noticed it a few days later. When I returned to show them the discrepancy, the manager refused to refund the $4.99 for a second tin of export soda crackers I didn't buy. The only other purchase on the receipt was a $50 tenderloin. The manager simply pointed to a posted return policy behind the register and suggested I "take a copy" for which to refer. That's right, she refused to refund $4.99 to a frequent patron to her market since it opened. I understand policy, but it makes me wonder if this was truly a mistake or a common "practice". Also, why could a regular customer who frequently makes large meat purchases (and generously tips the butchers) return for a $4.99 overcharge if it didn't actually occur? The manager obviously didn't see the illogic of me trying to scam their market for $4.99. It's not about the money as $4.99 is not a big deal. It's about the principle. I guess they need to better understand customer service and use some logic with their policy enforcement. Hence, they get this review and my patronizing a different Latin market for which to shop. Went in for a breakfast sandwich with my wife and let me tell you COLD! How do you make an egg, ham, and cheese breakfast sandwich cold ? Everything was precooked which wasn't preferred, but at least before it gets on the sandwich make sure it's hot! The hot meal counter food... The Food... THE FOOD! OMG delicious! The meat selection is great, where else can you buy a decent T-Bone steak for $7.00? I mean... COME ON! Let me reiterate. The hot food counter is to die for! The fried, the steamed, the baked, the boiled... no matter what it is, it's always hot, HUGE portions, the prices could make you faint it's so inexpensive compared to the actual portions you get, and everything is just delicious! Sometimes, my guilty pleasure is to stop whenever I'm in the area, grab one of their decadent, greasy, fatty, delicious chiccharone (sp) (it's basically fried pork belly) OMG... heaven! It drips down your chin, it's crispy, tender, slippery, and just... comforting. (And hey, they say meat fat isn't bad for you in moderation.) This place is a small treasure for our area. Granted it is small and sometimes crowded, but you can't beat it. Their meat is BEAUTIFUL! No one trims better, none of that hidden fat when you open it up. Steaks are tender, burger ground fresh once or twice daily. The prices are incredible. They have a monthly sale flyer so sign up for it. I love this place. I used to go to the one at HWY 60 and Mt. Carmel, but their meat coolers are FILTHY and disgusting. They are not friendly and if you ask for something special at the butcher, you get the "stink eye". Not at Bloomingdale though. You ask they happily do it. I hope they find a place that is larger and keep up the wonderful neighborhood atmosphere. Also I you want a hot meal to go or a Cuban sandwich, this is the place. The amount of food you get from the hot area is OVERWHELMING. I could feed a family of 4 on one plate. The sandwiches are great. I live near this latin market and at first it was my go to spot every single day not for hot food but for grocery shopping. One time we purchased a bag of arina de maiz and when we opened it it had tiny insects inside!!.. We threw it away thinking well this can happen anywhere else. I went again and bought a bag of hot chocolate to make and it was expired. Today I went again after not going for so long,i grabbed a can wheat cereal for my child and expiration date was month 6 of 2014 !!!!!!!! I checked every single can from the shelve to see if it was just that one but no they were all expired. I cant even imagine what they do with there meat. Who knows they are there for days and they just change the tags on it. And if you look at there Yuka and Batatas or Malangas they always have mold on them. read more
