Bloomington Veterinary Hospital demonstrates every trait I look for in a veterinary practice to care for the animal members of my family. Every member of the staff is attentive, engaged, and invested in the well-being of your pet. They are helpful and responsive to any query or issue you may have (from true emergencies to the borderline neurotic concerns we all have as pet-parents). Dr. Tyson Medlock is particularly amazing. Dr. Medlock cared for my dogs (a 5lbs Yorkie and a 120lbs Great Dane) during the three years I lived in Bloomington. It may be cliché but I truly wish my GP showed as much concern about my wellbeing as Dr. Medlock does for his patients. He always provides the highest level of care during regular checkups, surgical consultations, and emergencies. While Dr. Medlock has helped me through a number of scary moments with my Great Dane (they tend to be clumsy and will eat anything left within their reach), I will be forever in his debt for the counseling and aid he provided while I was traveling with my horse-of-a-dog in Kentucky. I woke up one morning to my Dane showing all the signs of bloat and immediately took her to the nearest Veterinary Emergency room. Dr. Medlock worked with the emergency room doctor over the phone and took the time to counsel me through next steps. His ability to explain and advise on the best care for your pets is unparalleled. With his help, my Dane made it through those scary moments (which turned out to be a serious infection) and has been thriving ever since. In summation, Dr. Medlock and his team at Bloomington Veterinary Hospital provide the best veterinary care I have ever experienced during my many years of K-9 ownership. If I am ever fortunate enough to return to Bloomington, I will continue to entrust the well-being of my furry family members to this amazing group of professionals. read more

I needed to get newly adopted puppies vaccinated for leptospirosis fast, because I live on a rural creek property with much wildlife exposure. The fastest I could find was a vaccine clinic from the Monroe County Humane Association, where they received a first leptospirosis shot from Jim Koch whose business address is this clinic. I spent the entire day driving them down to make sure they were protected. However, no one told me a booster was required. Nothing was printed, nothing was on the receipt, and nothing was said verbally even though I had their shelter vaccination records with me and presented them at check in. I even asked what other shots they needed. Nothing. I stumbled on this 2nd dose needed fact later. As a result, my dogs were under-protected for months on a high risk property, and now they have to be revaccinated as a start over. They were almost certainly exposed when protection mattered most and are now receiving additional doses afterward because of that gap. When I contacted the executive director of the Humane Association, he vaguely said the information had been "available," but could not explain where it had been provided or in what format. Instead of addressing the issue, the response shifted toward suggesting I was criticizing their mission to help animals. That misses the point entirely. If a clinic is going to administer vaccinations, owners should leave knowing exactly what boosters are required and when, especially when you present your records and ASK. Otherwise, they're not helping animals at all, rather are creating avoidable exposure risk and animals end up over vaccinated too. Given this experience, I would not feel comfortable using a veterinary practice connected with this clinic/vet again. I'm also not surprised to see other reviews mentioning confusion and disorganization. read more

Thinking of moving on. I've taken my cats here for so many years. But...in its current iteration this clinic isn't working for us anymore. Long waits to have phone calls answered. Lack of returning phone calls. No wait times to be seen even with an appointment and ugh worst of all, just the general feeling that Dr. Medlock was over it. Its seems a bit chaotic over there and I think I'll be taking my cats elsewhere. read more

I have been seeing Dr Medlock since he bought the practice years ago. He is professional and very informative. I feel like I am always able to ask questions and ask about options of care for all of my pets . He has always been patient and very caring. He saw us through our 3 dachshunds and their aging process with CHF, enlarged heart, severe anemia and back issues. Much TLC when we had to say good bye to our last good boy Baron last April. We will continue to see this practice with any new oets as well. read more

I'm adding a new review after years of good care and service under Dr. Soto. Unfortunately we are leaving this clinic with sadness and frustration. The office is a mess. No one seems to be in charge or managing what is going on. I am always put on hold or get voicemail when I call. I have been told conflicting things about my dogs when they were there for boarding (what size run or kennel they were in). I'm weary of waiting in my car for appointments and not getting to speak directly to the vet. Sadly, Dr. Soto left and we are too. COVID has been hard on many businesses. read more

We brought our cat in and saw two different vets. Our cat was under the care of Bloomington Vet off and on for two weeks. We brought him in the first time as an emergency case then five more times for treatment. The front desk staff, except for one woman, were unprofessional and borderline rude. More than once while we waited to see the vet they would be gossiping about co-workers. Once when we were waiting they were complaining about a customer who they had an issue with over the phone. It's not like they are behind a window, they MUST know that customers in the waiting room can hear them talking. It doesn't give you a good feeling to hear that they are obviously so unhappy. After two weeks of painful treatment, we were informed at 5pm on a Thursday night that our cat needed an ultrasound and we should drive him to Fishers. Our cat had been there all day, but not once during the day did Bloomington Vet call us to tell us he needed an ultrasound. We arranged for the ultrasound to be performed locally at Arlington Heights Vet, since we did not want to drive all the way to Fishers with our ill cat unless it was absolutely necessary. The Vet at Bloomington Vet was very obviously unhappy that we were going to have the ultrasound done at Arlington Heights vet. He said he didn't know who was going to read the results, and didn't trust their knowledge as much as he trusted the vet in Fishers. The Vet finally admitted that he had not performed the procedure he thought our cat needed since he was in college (his words) and he was not comfortable doing it. Why he waited TWO weeks to let us know this so we could have moved on to another Vet, or why he didn't pass our case on to one of his colleagues at Bloomington vet is beyond me. I have waited three weeks to write this review because yes, I was very angry. I asked the Vet to his face why he didn't tell us that he was uncomfortable performing the procedure in the first place, and if he had some kind of beef with Arlington Heights Vet since he wanted us to drive all the way to Fishers for an ultrasound. For our cat to suffer needlessly for two weeks while he could have been getting the medical help he needed is inexcusable. We will never set foot at Bloomington Vet again and will never recommend them to anyone who loves their pet. read more

I have been taking my cats to this clinic for around a decade now and have always been very pleased with the staff and the care that they provide. I took my cat Zeus there Saturday for an anual visit and the staff continues to be lovely and friendly as always. I have seen all of the providers, with Dr Soto being the provider this time. don't waste xx months of your precious time waiting for an appointment with this joke of a business that loves to peddle unnecessary treatments to milk clients for as much extra cash as possible. the info they give you on your dog's diagnosis is straight from google which makes me strongly question what degree program they went through; it could not have been a high ranked one. they like to make you wait outside for 10-30minutes each time you drop off or pickup your dog. in my specific circumstance, im a college student without a car so i have to come in an uber. obviously no uber is going to be thrilled to have to wait 10-30minutes for a dog... so i always call in advance and explicitly state that im in an uber and in a rush. they say ya sure on the phone and then im still left waiting that long. at any bloomington vet it's a 3-4 month wait to make an appointment if you're a first time patient. i waited for these clowns and now my dog has a rash. they are refusing to treat my dog because: a) i was snappy with their employees stating things like "i paid in full can you just bring out my dog already"/etc. pls keep in mind i already called; and had been waiting for 10-30 minutes in an uber before "snapping" like that. no profanities were used. one time my uber left me there and instead of just letting me sit inside a corner with my mask on they made me wait outside in 30 degree weather. b) i no-showed on (allegedly) x5 appointments over the course of 2+ years although I personally have a count of 2. c) I dared to contest being short $20. watch out for employees that like to steal cash! make sure you make them count it out in front of you if you choose to waste your business on an establishment like this. Bloomington Veterinary Hospital is a disgrace to the practice of animal veterinarians and the Bloomington community. Bloomington Veterinary Hospital was excellent at caring for my two senior dogs when we moved to town. My deceased dog had multiple complicated health issues during her last year of life (CCL surgery and a brain tumor) but Dr. Soto worked hard to coordinate with the specialists (an orthopedic surgeon and a neurologist) on our health care team. With a concerted effort between our specialists and Dr. Soto, our beloved dog, Scout Finch, was able to live twice as long as expected and with great quality of life up until her last day. In fact, when things did suddenly go south, Dr. Soto and her veterinary technician voluntarily came to my home at 1 am on a weekend to euthanize my dog who had gone into status epilepticcus. And Dr. Soto was pregnant at the time! It was a very difficult night for our family but made much easier by BVH. Since then, we adopted a dog who, unbeknownst to us, was heart worm positive. Dr. Soto advocated for our dog and for us with the rescue who had failed to notify us of his condition, which had jeopardized his health and thrown us for a loop. This has helped us tremendously. I know that the curbside service is frustrating to people but this is above and beyond what BVH can control. Their hearts are in the right place and they, like all of us, are doing the best they can. Above all else, it is clear that the staff loves and respects our four-legged friends. Is there anything more one could ask? read more

Dr. Funk stunk. We brought our cats here for their annual vaccinations two years in a row. The first year, I thought she was great in that she spent a lot of time asking questions. The following year, when she reviewed their files in the exam room, she had in fact recorded everything incorrectly (previous heart murmurs, tests completed, amount of food given, etc.) Makes me question whether she was truly listening in the first place. She was also VERY eager to recommend tests that our previous vets in the East considered not necessary. When I politely refused, she was quick with the attitude. Front staff and vet techs were friendly and accommodating. But definitely schedule with another vet. read more

We brought a rescued kitten to the veterinary service here. We have been clients ever since. Now my daughter visited with her dog who has been in the family for over 14 years, also rescued when a pup. Now she has lung cancer. Her vet in Chicago said not to bring her in the car as it could cause suffocation. I called the hospital and explained the situation and that we needed to have her put down. We were told to go to an emergency room for pets. The closest seems to be Indianapolis. I found the response heartless and I will never go back there. They say in their ad that they have emergency services but they do not unless you are an existing patient. I spoke to a woman on Saturday about 5 who refused to see my dog when I told her I didn't think he would make it to Indianapolis he was bleeding so bad he had gotten in a fight with another dog, but she had no sympathy whatsoever! I cannot understand for the life of me what being an existing patient would matter in an emergency situation! But clearly they don't care enough to be in this field!! Kevin hates the vet, he gets very nervous and it has been a struggle getting his annual vaccinations. But my experience with Bloomington Vet is totally different. I talked to someone before our appointment to go over everything to make sure Kevin had a good visit. Amazingly he did okay with the vaccinations and he really seemed to be somewhat at ease. After reading more on their website it was clear that they had er care-my dog had been bitten by another dog. She told me that they had already taken a number of er cases and couldn't take anymore. She didn't apologize for lying initially nor would they see my bleeding dog. I will never use this hospital and will be informing my vet about this falsehood. read more

This plays takes advantage of you every single time you go I swear. When I called and made my appointment today they failed to tell me turn on accepting cash, that they need a deposit, in the way that she said it on the phone was basically the doctor's gonna do what he wants to do and then we pay for it. I'm not made of money so I needed to verify that they are going to call me before doing anything to my dog because since I'm not a client I'm probly gonna have an $800 bill here today. The only good thing about this vet Is that they are open on a Saturday. I guess i will find out whenever they wanna give me a call what they wanna do for my dog that's having seizures. Already been waiting over an hour for something. While wewe were there for quite some time, my dog had seizures while the had him and told me he didn't. He doesnt normally have a foamy mouth. That's from his seizure . The guy wouldn't give him a phenobarbital shot like I asked him to, and he's been seizing now on and off since we got home. They said with the shot of Valium, his medicine and a neurontin the seizures would stop. Nope. Still seizing. Thanks for wasting my time and money, just go to the er vet in indy. Brought my two new kittens here for their first visit. They were not taken to be seen until 15 minutes after their appointment. The appointment was about an hour, which was fine, and I was asked to stay outside in my car, which was also fine. Except that the entire thing took more than 2 hours. I was called by the doctor, given the information and told that the front desk would call to check me out and then they would return my kittens. 45 minutes went by and no call, no kittens. So I had to call them to ask what was going on. They then quickly got me checked out and my kittens were returned to me within 15 minutes. I'm frustrated that I could have gone home (2 minutes away) and gotten some things done around the house while this appointment took so long. Instead, I wasted time sitting in the parking lot. Who knows how much time I would have spent out there had I not called to question them. Won't be returning. The location is great for us, but the service isn't what we expected. read more

I am not one to ever write reviews about businesses, but I felt the need to today. As a first time dog owner (by myself, outside of my parents home), it was extremely important to me to find a vet who cared deeply for animals. My 6 month old Goldendoodle woke up in the middle of the night last night with diarrhea. I came home on my lunch to check on him and let him out, and I noticed this time there was blood mixed in. I called the vet immediately only for them to tell me they were booked solid today (Friday), as well as tomorrow (Saturday). BUT, if I wanted, I can bring him in as a "walk-in" and be charged double the amount of a normal visit. But that's only if I managed to make it there by 4:30! If I came any later than that, it turned into a $125 charge. Because apparently people don't have full-time jobs? Ridiculous. I immediately felt like my dog was put second, and money put first. That isn't how a vet is supposed to work. Thankfully we were able to get him into a different hospital with better hours and a more reasonable price. We will be taking our business elsewhere. read more

The first time I came here with my cat, I was super nervous because I had never taken her to the vet before, but the technician and vet (Dr. Khalil) were so kind and caring. She ended up doing really well! The second time (an evening appointment), it was much louder and my cat was much more nervous. This technician wasn't quite as warm and comforting to my cat, but I really liked Dr. Soto. I would recommend if you have a nervous animal maybe don't go in the evenings when it's more crowded, but overall I definitely recommend this vet! read more

I feel it necessary to say thank you to Dr. Funk. I was in Bloomington for a few days and around 9:30p found myself taking possession of a tiny kitten from some not so respectable individuals that had come into our hotel lobby. They literally tossed her at me. The poor thing was quiet and we thought maybe she was due to her age. There were no emergency veterinary offices open and the only one we could find refused to help, even though we offered to prepay, and we were forced to hold out until morning. During the overnight hours, she crashed in a violent and painful manner and we lost her. Once morning came, I began contacting many of the area veterinary offices. All of them simply told me (in a very cold tone) to pay for them to cremate her or "drop her at the shelter and they'll take her off my hands". I needed and wanted more for her. But something was different when I called Bloomington Veterinary Hospital. Their compassion, patience and sincerity was incredible. I chose to pay for the cremation for this tiny nugget that I had only known for 6 hours. As I finished the paperwork, Dr. Funk asked me to come in back and speak privately. She was truly comforting, and clearly understood that it wasn't about the money, and more for the dignity of the animal. She also encouraged me to contact the police for potential abuse by the @ssholes, and when animal control called me, I made sure to praise this office for their conduct. We have a 2 months puppy with left broken leg accident, never went to vet. The accident happened on Sunday. I called this hospital for help, they said do not take emergency for new client and they told me that I should go to indyvet. So, we went to IndyVet for help and keep the continue for 2 times in following 2 weeks. I sent emails to this hospital to ask the transfer service and take care of my puppy because we are students in Bloomington. We would like to take care here. But, they never reply to me. When I called this hospital to ask for the transfer and bandage change for my dog, they just said the doctor felt really uncomfortable to take this case because we went to IndyVet so many times! I do not understand how the vet hospital like this?! They may think they are the only one, the best one in Bloomington, so they have rights to feel uncomfortable with a little puppy! My cat Solar got fever and was unwilling to eat and drink water. I used to go to college mall vet hospital and I will continuously go there after the experience in Bloomington veterinary Hospital. My friend recommended me BVH and hopefully, they can give me some other advice for my cat. (If I have second chance, I will NEVER go to Bloomington vet!!!) Aug 31 (Friday), I went to Bloomington Vet and did Blood test, x-ray, FIP test. Dr. Funk told me I will get my FIP test result on next Tuesday (Monday is labor day). Sep 4 (Tuesday), I made phone calls for the FIP result and someone responded that Dr. Funk will call back as soon as they get result. On the same day, I took solar back to College mall vet, he already had fluid in his abdomen and gas in stomach. This is the sign of FIP which is a fatal illness for cat, so the test result is very important and urgent. Sep 7, I took solar to college mall vet to get some Q fluid as usual because solar is very dehydrated. The vet told me solar may only have few days left and his blood cycle is not good. Even though the FIP result is still unavailable, all the symptoms can diagnose as FIP. Today is Sep 11. I still didn't receive any call back about test result. Also, the medical records and x-ray, that I requested to send me by email still didn't receive yet. This is an absolutely irresponsible for the client!! read more

the vets: hands down, the most caring, knowledgeable, friendly, honest and experienced vets in town. dr. mary alice is amazing with cats, and has been literally a lifesaver at times. along with her husband and cohorts, BVH provide the best care you can find for your pets in bloomington. the "techs," "clerks" and other miscellaneous "staff": hit or miss. sometimes (ok, mostly) sweet and helpful, but sometimes short and borderline bitchy. there's one guy in particular with a bad case of the "unfriendlies" who's often at the desk and being rude to his coworkers. but this is so minor compared to the care your pet receives with the actual vet. when i first moved here six years ago, i tried out a lot of the reputable vets in town and this has been my tried and true go-to for pet wellness for the past four or so. awesome. read more

I have been a client of the Bloomington Veterinary Hospital for 14 years and have only the highest regards for Dr. James Koch (pronounced "cook"). He is caring, thorough, and takes the time to explain whatever is necessary with regard to your pet. He has a very loyal following and consequently, it may take a while to schedule an appointment. The limitations of his practice are that he does not do major internal surgeries or reconstructions: for example, torn ligaments. I had to go to Anderson, IN, for one dog that had abdominal tissues fused with organs, and he said he didn't feel comfortable doing it. I hope that in the future he can attract good surgeons to offer local residents the convience of being able to treat one's companions here. My friends with birds also rave about his care. read more

I've been taking my pets here for 6 years. Dr. Mary Alice Cox is amazing with cats and I have no doubt that she takes care of mine as if they were her own. One of my cats got an infection and became critical over a holiday weekend. Dr. Cox answered my emails all weekend, checked in on my kitty all weekend, and was able to heal her with minimally invasive treatment. My kitties all love Dr. Mary Alice because they know she's gentle with them and they know she loves them. Dr. Cox's clinical approach is always 'less is best' which is not only cost effective but the least amount of stress to the cat. I've had pets all my life and this is by far the best Veterinary clinic I have ever gone to. read more
