Even discluding the frequent 20+ minute waits (when I have an appointment), the manicure here was far from good. I bought a Groupon, but if I paid full price, I would have been extremely disappointed. The shape of my nails wasn't terrible but far from flawless. The neutral gel color I requested was the only reason my nails looked presentable because the polish didn't even fully cover my finer nails. Also it was a very painful process, because she tried to remove way too much skin around my cuticles. Maybe it was just me. I've had waxing here in the past that was great, which is the only reason this place gets 3 stars. read more

I went to Blue Bird today for the first time. I purchased a living social deal because it was time for some bodily love. I was a bit lost when I first arrived (they te the opposite side of the building away from Home Depot), but the staff was very friendly and getting me on the right track. I was greeted warmly by the staff and the esthetician, Pamela. I was made to feel comfortable the entire time. Pamela and I chatted which is always cool when getting a wax. Takes your mind off the biting pain. The area is very comfortable, relaxing, the music would be great for a massage, and overall you get a nice feel. My wax was just as I hoped it would be. This was not my first wax but it has been a while but things went smoothly. If you are looking for a new spa like place to wax, get pedicures, manicures, etc. I highly recommend this place and especially Pamela!! read more

I have gotten several Brazilian waxes from here in the last 3 years and LOVED how great the staff was and how thorough they were. I came back recently and was not satisfied. The new waxer seemed rushed and not very skilled. She was young, very sweet and professional but left me with a ton of stray hairs. She didn't use tweezers to do a once over or even clean me up properly. She also missed an entire strip of hair and left me with a large amount of wax that I had to remove. I got home and had to peel off wax with coconut oil which was very painful and time consuming! This was my go to place, I hope I just caught her on an off day and most people seem to really love this place. I did end up leaving l a voicemail, and sent a message to follow up on my dissatisfaction with the appointment and to cancel my next one and never heard back from staff. read more

Ahhhhhhh. Shelbie at Blu Bird Spa gives an amazing massage! It has been a long time since I have had a massage this good. She strategically uses hot moist towels to loosen the muscles of the back and the feet. The back massage was just what I needed to soothe an aching lumbar region. Overall, my massage was just the right mix of deep muscle work to release the knots, and relaxation. Just perfect. I'm someone who rarely takes the time to get a massage, but after this experience, I was happy to book another appointment. Blu Bird also offers bunch of other services including a full service salon, facials, waxing and manis/pedis. The spa sits nestled in what appears to be a run-down old strip mall at 83rd and Metcalf, but don't let outward appearances fool you. Inside is a nicely appointed relaxing space. Come a few minutes early for your first massage appointment as there's a short form to be completed. Also, first-time customers get their first one-hour massage for $50. read more

I had been going to Mindy for all of my *erm* delicate waxing needs for the past several years. When I first started this type of waxing I tried a few different locations, and as far as I am concerned, Mindy is as good as it gets. She works quickly, yet has about as gentle of a touch as I have ever experienced. I feel incredibly at ease with her, and can't imagine going elsewhere. I am glad that Mindy and her husband set out on their own. Their place is located in the incredibly convenient (if a bit unattractive) strip mall right off of Metcalf. Regardless of the location, the inside has been remodeled INCREDIBLY. It is super cute and ultra chic. Prices are reasonable. I haven't yet tried getting my haircut by Mindy's husband, but if he is anything like Mindy, I know I will be really happy. read more

She rubs your feet, your calves, your shoulders, your arms, AND your hands! Yeah - and this is a FACIAL! You get ALL the extras! She was also the perfect combination of personable (talkative) and quiet so that you can really relax and enjoy. She lets you know what your skin needs and makes product suggestions, but does not pressure you to buy anything. The environment is calm and relaxing. This is a great spa to do business with. Their phone number also has text capability, so making an appointment is easy if you're not in a position to make a voice call. It is located in somewhat of an outdated strip center, however they have put the magic touch on it and have done a great update of their parcel...it clearly stands well above their neighbors for aesthetics. It's very pleasing to the eye. Jackie was my therapist. She did a fantastic job not only with the massage, but with maintaining a relaxed and serene environment. The audio selection was perfect for the occasion. The best part was that you couldn't hear what was going on in the salon area during the massage. Jackie did a short assessment to determine what areas needed to be focused on, and then delivered beautifully. She didn't make small talk during the massage unless you spoke first. I tried out Blu Bird yesterday after having a pretty frustrating and expensive cut at a Lawrence salon. Mike took my call, scheduled me for the following day, and started with me right away despite my early arrival. The salon is in a strip mall, so it's easy to miss, but the inside is very cute, stylish and well-thought-out. I have pretty simple, long, straight hair, so I space out my cuts and need a stylist who's interested in what I actually do with my hair, rather than experiment on me in some trendy way that looks cute for six hours. Mike was wonderful, and a great balance of respecting my wishes and sharing his own experience and insight. I plan to go back and would recommend Mike to friends in the area. read more

Purchased a groupon for a manicure, and it was the fastest, best gel manicure I've ever gotten. It was surprisingly located in a hidden little shopping center near my neighborhood, but is adorable and quite large inside. I unfortunately can't remember the name of the lady who did my nails but she really did a great job, and was done in like 25 mins. They are still looking great 2 weeks later, which is saying something when you work in health care. The only unsettling thing about this experience is she got her manicure tools from a little pencil box labeled "Dirty instruments" and when I asked her if they were actually dirty, she said no. However, there was definitely no unwrapping of new instruments or anything to indicate they were clean, since they were loosely rattling around together in this 'dirty' pencil box. I've been getting professional massages for around 10 years and have had all types of masseuses; men, women, small frame, large frame, young to business, years in the business, you name it. I have used a number or masseuses due to not being pleased with the massage. I will note that I am very picky, but I am also upfront with my masseuse before, during, and after the massage about the amount of pressure, what's ailing me, if I just to need relax, less talking, more talking, etc. Too many times I've left a massage not feeling relieved of this constant shoulder pain I have. The first massage I had with Terry at blu bird, I gave him the some speal I give every masseuse. He paid close attention to everything I said and tailored my massage to exactly what I asked for; A LOT of pressure in this area, hardly any pressure in that area, PS my feet are ticklish, but don't skip them, I left my 1st massage with Terry feeling the best I ever did. I couldn't believe it, my shoulder had ALL of the knots gone, no one had ever gotten ALL of the knots out of my shoulder in a single massage before. I left the table feeling relaxed, energized, and for the first time in years has full range of motion in my shoulder and neck without pain. After about 6 weeks I could feel my shoulder start to knot up again; this is due to my horrible posture, bad sleeping habits, and sedentary work. I thought to myself, well let's see what happens. It had been in my previous massage experience, the first time I went to a new masseuse, the massage was good, and then the next time I returned, it wasn't as good. I have always chalked this up to the masseuse wanting to impress the 1st time and losing a bit of the quality once you have returned. Since the 1st massage Terry gave me set such high standards, I scheduled another with him and expected that he would slip and not deliver as good of a massage the second time. Terry proved my wrong, the second massage was just as perfect as the first. He even took the time and care to find knots that I didn't even know I had. He was determined to make sure that I was knot free and felt like the best me. By the end of my second massage, I was sold. My muscle pain comes back less often and less angry then it ever has before. I've received about 8 massages by Terry now and some of them have solely turned into massages for relaxation for the simple fact that he has taken the time, effort, and energy to dissolve the pain in all of my muscles. I have been a loyal customer of Michael and Mindy for years because of their incredible talent and personalized service. When they opened their own spa, my commute became challenging, but when I moved even farther away, it was decision time: find a replacement, or drive 45 minutes. We bought a $293 value gift certificate for a day of beauty donated by blu bird at the end of last September while visiting Kansas City for a charity event. NO EXPIRATION DATE was on certificate. I called to use last week and they told me it had expired in February . They made no attempt to make any accommodation what so ever. I think this is VERY POOR service. All they had to do was put an expiration date on the certificate and I never would have bought as there was no way I could have used because I live in chicago and knew that I would not be back before February. They're great, you can always get right in for a haircut, Mike usually cut my hair, and does a great job. But everyone there has always done a great job. I have struggled a long time to find a place in Kansas City that can color and style my hair the way I like, but when I went to blu bird I was blown away from the time I walked in the door; they made you feel right at home. When I sat down to talk about the color I was looking for Mike blew me away with how amazing my color turned out. I even felt comfortable enough to let the stylist create a cut he thought would look good on me, and again I was truly impressed with the new hair style. I purchased a Groupon for a Brazilian wax at blu bird spa. Despite the charming decor and friendly receptionist, I was disappointed after the visit. The whole visit just didn't leave me feeling like the wax technician cared much about my experience. She did mention that she had done several Brazilian waxes that day already. I appreciate a quick wax but this lady seemed like she barely paid attention to what she was doing as she ripped out my hair follicles. Her technique seemed sloppy in comparison to other Brazilian waxes I have received from other spas. She didn't hold my skin taut enough when removing the wax strip, nor did she press down on the skin immediately after pulling off the wax strip to dull the pain. For that reason, this was probably one of the most unnecessarily painful waxes I've received (and I've gotten pretty used to tolerating the pain of bikini waxes over the years.) After she felt she had completed the job, I left the salon with several stray hairs all around my bikini area. I would have appreciated if she had finished by looking over her handiwork and waxing or plucking those remaining stray hairs with tweezers. read more
