This is an overdue review for hair color at the end of last year. Called in for the same-day appointment and they were accommodating. My hair stylist was pretty good at listening to what I want and like, while trying to keep my hair alive. The reason why I took a star off is because my highlight in my bangs was a bit uneven. Plus the stylist told me I should wash my hair right before the appointment next time, so that he could save a lot of time. But I remember it is best to keep natural oil in your hair to protect your scalp from chemicals and stuffs before dying your hair, right? I was kind of iffy about that. Not sure if it was a misunderstanding due to the language barrier. It was overall a pretty decent job for the price by NYC standards. read more

Kota is the greatest hair stylist ever!!! I've been going to him for years at another Japanese salon on the UES but now he has opened his own salon on 75th! I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair as I'm very picky. He does an excellent job and listens to his clients to make sure they are fully satisfied. I'll follow him anywhere! Today was my second and last time at this location. I'm hurt and upset it had to end this way because I really like the stylist (Sugi) I worked with but the management was rude and racist. I have curly hair and was excited to find someone I clicked with who took his time with my hair. As I was leaving, the woman at the front desk told me I would have to pay literally 2.5x the price offered to everyone else. I travelled from another borough, brought my own product for him to use and did not complain when something was off. Telling me to pay double what everyone else pays is beyond insulting. It's telling me "don't come back." And I won't. This establishment made it absolutely clear that they only work with white and Asian folks with straight hair. I was the only person of color in that space both times I went. It's sad that you don't value ALL of your customers. read more

Masato was my hair stylist and did an outstanding highlight and cut. Initially, I contacted the salon through Groupon but, I did not use it since he does not work with Groupon. They were honest from the beginning (not like many other salons who cheat you through Groupon to attract clients then it's all lie). Needless to say, I got a good deal and an amazing service in all the ways. Masato is the best hair stylist I ever seen in NY not only because of his talents but also his personality. I am very picky and they don't even know I'm writing a review as they don't ask me to write it. The location is amazing in the heart of UES just a few blocks from my apartment. They are all Japanese directly from Japan and their demeanor and service are the best in the area. You can feel you can trust them. I did it for you ...among some of the most expensive, medium and trendiest places NY has to offer, I finally found my comfy and incredible hair place! This is simply the Best hair salon with the most reasonable prices. It is a cute little place, with a trendy home like atmosphere, office dog and a cool music. I will never go anywhere else. Miho is my girl, a master of color and highlights. This girl creates magic!! I can't tell you how many compliments I get on my color! How does she create something that doesn't turn yellow? I've been spoiled with all the great hair salons. This one is so close to my home, so I gave it a try after reading the good reviews. It was okay, not that great IMHO. They don't have a lot of people working, meaning you better make an appointment. I wanted a simple woman's haircut. But somehow, I do find cutting a straight line is the most challenging job for hair cutting. I have to point it out that it was not straight line at the first time, and let him fix it... The price was justified by the first time customer discounts. The service was not bad too. But I wouldn't want to go back again any time soon considering better options out there. read more

I went to Blu Bocker for a half head of blonde highlights in August and Masato did an excellent job! The color is perfect! He got all of my dark spots and highlighted very close to the root. I have struggled to find a great hair salon in NYC and I finally found it! Not only was everyone very friendly when you walked in the door I have to say I loved the music they were playing! They were playing music from the 1950's! It was great! I got a single process and the colorist listened to exactly what I wanted and did a great job! She colored my hair so fast I couldn't believe it! Usually it takes someone almost two hours to color my hair, she did it in thirty minutes. Then she gave me the BEST head massage I've ever had! A guy cut my hair and was very talented listened to what I wanted and again cut and styled my hair so fast. Usually im stuck in a salon for 3 or more hours. I was in and out in an hour and a half which I have a lot of thick hair! Overall I have nothing but great things to say about this salon! Very friendly and talented people! Best recent hair cut+deep conditioning+blow dry experience. The studio is small but very well kept, no serious odor buildup, good ventilation. While tighter than traditional salons, there is a beautiful minimalist interior design esthetic going on, leading to a non-cramped vibe. I was greeted by the front desk, signed the obligatory COVID questionnaire.  Mariko was my stylist, and let me tell you- I am beyond ECSTATIC that I bought the additional scalp massage with her. I was literally and unabashedly, drooling under my mask by how relaxing my wash, conditioning and scalp massage was. She was very detailed when it came to the cut. I was worried by the slight language barrier,but her attention to detail and conscientiousness put me at ease and made me really happy with the end product.  I used a groupon for the services, which was easy to do. Highly recommend! Went for my first haircut there and was pleasantly surprised. Staff is all friendly but no forced small talk which I LOVE! My stylist did a great job, just wanted a trim for my somewhat color damaged Asian hair. He took out a lot of the volume because my hair is very thick, but took the time to leave the outer layers long so it didn't look choppy. Still, I've followed him: he gives me great haircuts, he's meticulous, he's kind. I'm fat, older, with fine hair--not exactly a prestige client! But Kota has treated me as I'm as special as anyone in the city. He treats every customer that way. And again, he gives great haircuts. He takes his time; you never feel rushed. His new salon is spacious, attractive in a quirky idiosyncratic way (there's nothing generic or cookie-cutter about Kota's style), & comfortable (way more spacious than his old one!). It's rustic chic interiors with its pharmacy lamps, tripod side tables and antique mirrors with relaxing background music makes it an ideal place to let your hair loose and let the experts run their magic. The staff is polite, genuine and highly trained. The stylists (the name of my stylist was Kick) are extremely well trained and their years of meticulous 'samurai' training shows itself when they start working with their tools! Kota is the best!!! I recently moved to NY from LA and was nervous about finding a new hair salon. I have very, very thick straight hair and it can look disastrous unless it is cut by experts. I happened to run into Kota at his previous salon and I'm so glad he's opened his own place! As long as I live in NY, he will be the only person to cut my hair! He is so professional, polite, and meticulous, and greets everyone with a smile. My hair takes forever to cut, dry, style and he always puts in 150% effort! Um, excuse me, Kick made my hair fabulous. Blu Bocker is the real deal. The stylists here (I think Kick and Kota are the main stylists) are incredibly talented and seasoned, and we are lucky to have them. I will continue to make the trek up to UES to make this haircut thing happen. I have known Kick because she shops at a store I used to work in, and I respected her for her crazy cool style and septum ring. I didn't know how good she was at her craft though until I followed her on Instagram. Never one to splurge on myself, I always considered haircuts an unnecessary evil, and very tricky to get right. Do you ever hate how your hair grows out weird after a cut? That's me, so I liked to avoid hair salons as often as possible. I took the plunge last week because Blu Bocker recently opened and had offered a deal, but most of all because I felt I was going to do my hair right at Blu Bocker. I feel transformed under Kick's extremely skilled hands! At some point I felt like I was working with Edward Scissorhands, and asked her if her hands hurt from moving that fast (she was like no), and then at some point I had to ask her how long she'd been cutting hair, and she said 12 years, but I'm like so how did you start at 4? She did a fabulous dry cut first, then washed my hair HERSELF, then worked on my hair some more to make sure it fell just right. So, in conclusion, Kick took her time and gave me not just a haircut, but she showed me how great my hair could be with the right style. My hair no longer feels like a stubborn outgrowth with a different personality every day depending on how I slept, but now look sophisticated and edgy, more me (or, okay, what I'm working towards)!!! Just did a keratin treatment and haircut with Reina and she did an incredible job. I really couldn't be happier! I came home and my fiancé said I look younger, thinner and more "expensive" so I'd say that's a huge win! Reina really took her time and was meticulous giving me the haircut from the photo reference I showed her and did an amazing job with the keratin too! This review is long over due. I went in for a hair cut and highlights and loved the experience from the moment I walked in. They made me feel welcome and comfortable knowing I was a bit nervous about getting highlights for the first time. The end result was fabulous, couldn't be happier. My hair was very dark so I wasn't sure if the highlights were going to show at all, they did and it looked great. Will go back in a few months for lighter color.
