We got 6 sushi rolls none of which were all that exciting and they only came with about 4 pieces of ginger to go with one of them. Yum, I really enjoyed the sushi here. The server took awhile to get to us or even greeted us when we sat down, but when he finally did he was decently attentive. You can tell they have regulars there by the relationship they have with certain customers, which is nice to see. The presentation of the food is great, which compliments the sushi. Wasn't sure what to eat, so I picked up a Sashimi Bento Box for lunch. The restaurant has limited parking. But the restaurant is very nice, a little plain but comfortable. Staff were pleasant. The Sashimi was tuna and salmon. It was very good. California Maki was good. It also came with Shumai, those tiny suckers were delicious. I had never had hot and sour soup before, but it was very good and I enjoyed it. It was a nice change of pace because other restaurants will only have Miso Soup offered with their Bento boxes. I really want to love Blu Karma because they have such an extensive menu and are relatively close but I never seem to find perfection when eating their food. My dining partner brought me a mango sushi roll to share and initially I was like yes! I can finally write a 4 or 5 star review because it was really tasty. I liked the mango on top and it was nicely made. It just didn't have that fresh feeling as you ate it - you know what I mean, it tastes good at the time but afterward your stomach feels a bit unsettled. My dining partner was fine so it could be just me but I so desperately want to find something that works and is great to recommend from Blu Karma. First of all, the food is excellent and always fresh. I've never been disappointed with the food. On the downside, the restaurant is small and crowded with people seated right next to you. Staff seems annoyed most of the time. It's almost like you are inconveniencing them by having the nerve to ask for something. The food was uninspiring and not worth the prices. Big issue for me was being charged for refills on a Diet Coke. Most of the glass was filled with ice so it needed to be refilled twice. I was charged $9.00 for my Diet Coke. When I asked the waiter about this, he said that I had three Cokes and that the charge was correct. Also told me that only water has free refills and I should have asked for water. I travel for work and eat in restaurants quite often, first time anyone has charged for refills on a soda let alone charged $9.00. As far as a sushi place goes, its pretty good and very fresh. As far as management, I was a bit perplexed. Now I am just being a bit picky but I wanted to come here for lunch. I heard from yelp reviews the lunch was really good! So we arrive at 2:55 and had to take an extra 5 minutes to talk to a gentlemen outside (maybe the owner) who asked us to move our car because someone was going to take down a tree near the car. So we moved and went inside. I saw a lunch special outside and lunch specials on the back of the menu. So our waiter comes over and gives us the menu and lets us know that the lunch menu cannot be served because it was past 3. I check my phone and its 3:02. And I would understand if the restaurant was busy and he didn't want to give us any special privileges. But we were the only ones there. There was no one else. So I was a little thrown off with the strict 3 o'clock rule. Aside from that we grabbed 3 roles and a free crab chip with a yelp check in. The crab chip was actually very good! I was surprised that they'd put that on the check in, so I would definitely come back for that!! The roles were also pretty good. The California roll was plentiful, the Philly roll was fresh and my favorite was the crazy roll (?) which had tempura shrimp, lettuce, spicy mayo, and cucumber. Overall the food was good, about a dollar more expensive to other sushi in the area. I came in for the a lunch bento box so the sushi was a nice surprise. I had been wanting to try this place for a while and went in with high hopes. It ended up being one of the worst meals my husband and I have ever had. We started with the spicy seafood salad which was actually pretty good. It went downhill from there. We then got the salt and pepper wings- they had a heavy, fried, oily batter. Not mention that they were $16 for SIX split wings. We ordered spicy tuna hand rolls- the tuna was light pink and the hand rolls were filled with mayo and tempura. You couldn't even taste the tuna- which in this case was probably a good thing. The eel cucumber roll and the yellowtail roll were so fishy that we couldn't even eat them. I actually had to spit out the yellowtail. To add insult to injury, our bill ended up being over $80 for food (no drinks other than water) we couldn't even eat. Delicious sushi! That's what I came here for and wasn't disappointed. I tried both the Blu Karma maki and the Cupid's Arrow maki, of the two I think cupid was my favorite. The sauce on top was delicious, I would happily get a bottle of that sauce to go and pour it on everything! My group also tried the Peking duck - it was good and came in a huge portion, as did the pineapple fried rice and teriyaki chicken. The owners are crazy nice and at least one of them is always on site. In addition to the spicy edamame, which remains stellar, the tempura cauliflower is a must-try! It might just be one of my favorite dishes ANYWHERE! it started off as a special, but everyone loved it so much it was added to the regular menu. The tempura cauliflower is served with a delicious sauce that is both sweet and spicy. I've been a regular at Blu Karma for a couple years now and it remains one of my favorite area restaurants. Decided on a whim to try this place after another sushi place was closed for renovations. This whim turned out to be one of the best decisions we had made, with the space intimate and the service excellent. This is definitely a date spot. It can get a little loud as it is a smaller spot, but the feel is still as if you're in your own little world. The lighting is dim but bright enough to see, the place settings scream fine dining, and the service feels enjoyable without being intrusive. The sushi as a whole was fresh and fantastic, with a boat for two actually enough to fill two adults. The pan seared pork dumplings are also amazing, and have a slight kick that is tasty and while unexpected, nice. This is a place, that despite being a whim choice, is one that we will come to again and again for sushi date nights many more times. 10/10 will be back as soon as we can. read more

My friend and I were in the mood for sushi and decided to check Yelp on places near our location. This place came up with a high star rating and said why not. First off, parking lot....so small and pretty tight. So be prepared to back out if all the spots are taken. Luckily there was one spot left when we arrived. I'm not sure where you would alternatively park though. Inside was also small but thankfully not too cramped. It was bright, clean, hostess was friendly. It was around 6ish on a Tuesday night, fairly busy but there were a few empty tables. We were greeted by our server promptly, could have been a bit more engaged but service was very good regardless. We ordered a variety of items...soup, salad, fresh roll and sushi. Soup was good, can't really mess it up. Salad....yummy dressing. Fresh rolls were good too, again can't really mess it up but it's happened. I will note the dipping sauce for them was quite spicy though. I almost asked for a different one. On to the sushi. We ordered a bunch of different sushi rolls and sashimi. Overall everything was good to great. I've eaten a lot of sushi, been to a lot of places so it really just comes down to how fresh the fish tastes. This place may not be in my top 5 but at least the top 10. We will most likely eat here again if we're in the area. As always never take my word and give it a try yourself. read more

For sushi I had Lady in Red which was a spicy tuna but extra special. It had roe on top and spicy mayo spread everywhere plus eel sauce. It was divine and very spicy, just how I like it!! The sushi here is EXCELLENT. I moved to Beverly from Somerville recently and was feeling wistful about my old favorite sushi place (Ebi in Union Square), and was sure I would not find somewhere else I liked as much. But I like being wrong. I've had mid-week lunch as well as dinner here now and I am so, so impressed at the super-fresh quality of the fish as well as by the skillful prep. Really beautifully done. I'll see if I can some photos to this review. The reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the other pieces of the menu so far haven't impressed me as much. Everything's been fine, just...meh. Like the broth in the wonton soup literally tasted like water, though the wontons themselves were fabulous, with rich flavorful filling and tender dough; the gyoza are on the heavy, quite oily side; the larb spring rolls, which sounded like such an awesome idea, mostly just tasted fried instead of offering the sour/spicy/herbal combo that makes good larb so yummy. Also, in terms of rating, the ambience is weirdly casual - the place is cute, but maybe because the tv at the bar is so prominent? Dunno, but it rules it out as a nice date night spot for me. Service is prompt and efficient, though! Anyway, so happy to have this sushi place a few minutes from me. Truly outstanding for that. I go here for the incredible experience and ofcourse the food. Evan and Tina are friendly, and they make you feel a part of the whole experience, and it feels your are part of their food frame. So good for them, and all that dine here! Personally, I love the pork belly buns. Infact, I have an obsession with them. They are cocked to perfection. The Lady in Red Maki is another must, the yellow tail and the volcano maki is another must have as well. If you like eggplants, you have to try their sauté eggplant in their house sauce. Great variety whether you want sushi, Chinese, Japanese, Thai food they have it all. Sushi is always fresh. Everything else we order from the Pad Thai to Appetizer Combos always taste cooked to order and is always delivered hot. Deducted one star for the parking situation. It's next to impossible to find a spot and is very frustrating when all you want to do is run in to pick up your take-out so we opt for delivery even though we live close by. It's pricier than the sushi restaurant we're used to but you definitely notice the difference in quality. I'm a little sad that something like this isn't in my backyard. The waitstaff was prompt and kind. The owners made it over to the table as well and they were so insanely nice. The salt and pepper chicken wings had an amazing crust to the skin and the chicken was moist and juicy. The drinks were great and a round of shots for the table didn't hurt! The sushi was fresh and almost melted in your mouth. I will definitely have a more sushi based meal when I go back. I hate green beans but I have to admit their spicy green beans were good (don't tell anyone I admitted that)! Went here for lunch with a friend of mine. A few things: 1) This place is very clean. We both commented on how clean and nice it looked within a few minutes of sitting down. Not bad for a sushi place at all, as some of them can get extremely grimy. 2) Sushi quality was through the roof! The rolls melt in your mouth, and the sashimi was fantastic. 3) The only con is this: if you're in a roll mood, don't go for the Sushi Deluxe. I ordered it but it was mostly sashimi (which was excellent!), and the only "meat" in the rolls is cheap crab meat. 4) Service was great, no complaints there at all. It's a small place, so your server is always close. QUICK TIP FOR A FREE APP: check in on your Yelp app, show your server, and he or she will bring over a free "crab chip" appetizer. See attached photo. It's really good! My friend got their Red Spider roll, and it looked fantastic. It is small though, so it can get busy fast. But it's worth the wait if there is one. A couple of my favorite rolls are: Lady In Red - It's a spicy tuna roll, with tuna, eel & tobiko on top. Make sure to dip it in the sauce on the side of the plate, it's some kind of sriracha like drizzle, delicious. Torch White Tuna - White tuna roll, that has torched white tuna on top, with a jalapeno & wasabi tobiko. It's amazing. They also make great entrees, if sushi isn't your thing. They make a filet mignon stir fry, that has rice, asparagus, zucchini & other veggies. The meat is melt in your mouth tender. The spicy edamame is excellent, hot & sour soup is great.
