Every body said Eh but I beg to differ. My wife had the taquitos and said they were great she loved the refried beans and said they were one of the best she had. I had a Shrimp Chimichanga and it was loaded with shrimp. No rice fillers just cheese and shrimp. It was fantastic. The waitress was fantastic would be an understatement. You never get a second chance to make a positive first impression on a customer and, this notion is a concern central to the patrons and owners of restaurants, for better or for worse. Four-star Yelp ratings suggest the Blue Ray Mexican Grill is a worthy recipient of your dining dollars. Our singular experience puts us at odds with this notion. This place stands as a culinary first for us. It is the only restaurant -- ever -- to serve us stale beef. Our Order Carne Asada and Steak Fajitas. On arrival before dinner was the traditional appetizer of corn chips with the conventional tangy, spicey sauce. The chips were stale. The sauce presents an odd taste. The Steak Fajitas? The meat was stale. The grilled peppers and onions were delicious. We would have ordered grilled vegetables only if we had known the meat would be stale. The side dish of rice, refried beans, and chopped salad bits with guacamole stood the test of passable to the taste at best. Browning of the greens and a tasteless guacamole were notable. Our approach is to order entrees without the Tortillas at Mexican Restaurants. Getting the bread out of the mix is the only way to determine whether the ingredients are tasty and fresh. Stated differently, the Tortillas can mask undesirable qualities in ingredients. The Carne Asada? The meat was stale. Similar observations to those above apply to the sides served with this entree. Stale and tasteless are different qualities that present corollary characteristics in foods. Both are undesirable. By stale, we mean the meat was old or not fresh, as when long-term storage in a freezer yields freezer burn. By tasteless, we mean a food lacks flavor that could stem from inadequate seasoning, poor cooking techniques, or the nature of the food itself. Our dining experience here was a nightmare akin to a release the culinary Kracken moment in our bodies and, a waste of money ($45 plus tip). We won't return. read more

We placed a to go order while visiting Darien, GA for a couple of days on our way to Destin Florida. The place is very run down and tacky as far as appearance and upkeep. Typical prices for Mexican food at night. $100 for 7 people to eat. Food was mediocre, refried beans tasted old and reheated, rice was stale and tasted old. I got chicken quesadillas and they were pretty good nothing over the top or exceptionally delicious. There was no AC inside and one server seems to be serving all tables In the restaurant. I would not eat in most definitely and would not go back even for to go food was just not spectacular or very good at all. read more

To set the scene, we dine in Darien frequently. 2-3 weekends a month, our favorites are Skippers and Mudcat Charlie's. On this Friday night we decided to branch out and try the local Mexican restaurant. I'm thankful we did because now we know we will never return to Blue Bay. We are a party of 6, 5 of us have worked in the service industry, and on first glance it's a busy spot and seems like 1 person is waiting on all of the tables and tending bar as well. For the first half of our visit, she was absolutely killing it. We waited 20 minutes for a round of waters and to place an order for chips. Received chips immediately, waters came 10 minutes later. Waited 30 minutes to place an order, that chance never came, so I wrote our order down and gave it to the server to put in the system. 15 minutes after that, the order was put in. Current time in restaurant = 1 hour and 15 minutes. Chips and waters are long gone with no hope of being refilled. 20 minutes later, 2 dishes came out. 20 minutes after the first round of dishes, 2 more dishes came out. 4 of 6 meals have hit the table. We waited another 20 minutes to let our server know 2 people still didn't have dinner (at 9 pm). The only reason we waited that long was because she was busy drinking beer out of the bottle behind the bar (big yikes) and socializing with a table next to us. Last 2 dishes come, we ask for to go boxes and one check. Check comes no apology from the server or the person pretending to be a manager. Will add here that there was a manager type person on shift and if the owner is reading this she needs to be fired. She spent two hours stacking and restacking menus. I would be embarrassed to have that person working in my restaurant. Total time in restaurant= 2 hours and a few minutes. Food was ok, probably best thing about this place. Moral of this story, is if you want dinner when you go to a restaurant, go anywhere else. read more

The food is pretty good with the typical Mexican fair. The service is quick but can be a bit slow when they are busy as I've never seen more than 1 server who waits the tables and makes the drinks. I assume it's this way only during the off season. The owner, who does most of the serving, is always pleasant. Although they have made an effort to make the restaurant handicapped accessible, it can still be a bit difficult to maneuver the makeshift ramps at the entrance and leaving the porch to enter the inside, the space indoors is a bit limited. read more

Hmmm . . . I'm definitely in the minority here. I know that Darien doesn't have many restaurants to choose from. And I'm thrilled to see any ethnic food at all - but after visiting their sister location on St. Simon's island - I don't understand how these two restaurants are owned and run by the same person. (See St Simons Blue Bay Mexican review) I had pretty much given up on this place after my last poor experience - but when I leave SGHS each night - I'm pretty beat - and the last thing I feel like doing is heading 'into Brunswick' - I just turn left on 17 and keep straight. The only restaurant I pass by is Pam's - and that's not an option. I wasn't in the mood for B&J's or Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC, Dairy Queen or McDonalds . . . Tonight - I called them to see if it was too late to place an order since it was about 15 minutes before closing. They said No - it was fine. So I ordered nachos - but I asked them to omit the refried beans and queso - to just use shredded cheese instead. They said ok / no problem. When I got my nachos - I was surprised to see that I they were topped with cold, shredded cheese. When I expressed my confusion / surprise / disappointment - the server told me that there was no way to melt the cheese because if they put the styrofoam in the oven it would melt???!!!! He actually explained this to me - as though I was suggesting he put the Styrofoam container in the oven. I explained to him that most places have a foil sheet and a pan - and they transfer everything to the Styrofoam afterwards. He said, "We don't have that. We have no way of doing that. But you can microwave it at home." Now - why dafuque would I microwave something that's topped with shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes? And clearly there's no way for me to easily remove said shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. This place is insane. Definitely not coming back here because I'm clearly not welcome any way. read more

This Mexican restaurant, with a coastal vibe, has a wonderful laid back atmosphere. When we arrived on this Saturday evening, about 6:30, they weren't particularly busy, and we were seated right way. However, Blue Bay seemed to have a rush of customers. Service became quite slow. They served their complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa tasted and appeared as if it was a canned tomato sauce base. The salsa was bland and just okay. My husband and I love tamales so we started with an order of their pork tamales. They were heavy on the Mesa and short on pork filling. For the entree, I ordered the 12" Moctezuma burrito filled with ground beef, shredded lettuce, rice, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole and topped with cheese. Disappointingly, it was cold. I'd have told my waiter, but he was so busy. It was time for the check before we saw him again. They have an outdoor area with dining tables and a stage. I'm assuming they have live entertainment from time to time. I'll certainly give this spot a second try and hopefully catch some live music too! read more

I stopped here on my way home from a trip. I wish you could rate different categories on a restaurant on Yelp. This restaurant I would give it a four star if it was just for the food. It might be me, I was. Just not impressed with the setting or decor, I would give it a 2.5. As far as the service. They were a little slow when I first got their. Service was I would give a 3. We've been eating here for years and it's been our favorite Mexican restaurant in or outside of Darien. We went yesterday for lunch and we're surprised to find things had definitely changed: service was pretty slow especially since there were in 2 tables and 3 servers, the refried beans were extremely thick, dry and overly spiced with cumin, the rice was dehydrated and crunchy, they've changed to plastic plates (ours were pretty scratched up which creates bacterial harborages), my steak quesadilla was only 3 pieces ( it used to be 4 pieces - they've apparently reduced the size of the tortilla to make it smaller), and my biggest concern was that the hot water handle in the restroom was completely broken so no one (especially staff) could was their hands properly. It seemed like the prices had gone up as well. So disappointed. My previous review was 5 stars. We really hope they get things back on track. read more

Steer clear of the fast food joints on exit 49 and head to this hidden gem. Not super authentic Mexican but not typical over salted Americanized either. I had three yummy enchiladas with rice and beans. Buddy had quesadillas...he said they were quite good. Table salsa was a bit bland...asked for spicy...it was tasty..especially so if added to table salsa. Pico de gallo was fresh and tasty but a little on the pricey side.
