ORIGIN: The Hamilton Village Inn was originally constructed…read morein the mid-20th century as a single story building atop a former electric train path. It has been independently owned by a succession of people. The current owner acquired the motel a few years ago and has renovated the majority of the rooms with fresh flooring and linens, and new landscaping underway as well. CONCEPT: Despite renovations, Hamilton Village Inn has retained its charm as an independently owned motel of a bygone era. A variety of room types are available, including some with kitchenettes and balconies, in order to meet a range of ocean visitors' needs. Small refrigerators and microwaves are available in each room, and wooden picnic tables are scattered across the front lawn for guests to dine al fresco. EXPERIENCE: There are few relics of the past when it comes to motels in the region between Greenwich, Connecticut and Boston, Massachusetts. Chain motels and hotels are common, and so too is what to expect from each. This is not the case for Hamilton Village Inn -- but that is its very charm. Like other motels, a variety of towels are hung, multi-pillow beds are made, but they are done in a way that gives a sense that you are staying in a friend's or family member's guest suite. Each room is a little different, with prints and furniture that reflect the coastal setting. In leu of a hotel restaurant, a small building next door houses a well-regarded restaurant (Jigger's) where you can walk across the parking lot to dine with locals and vacationers, take out to one of many wooden picnic tables, or bring back to the guest room's dining area. The fact that the restaurant offers breakfast through dinner means that relaxing after a long drive or day at the beach is an easy option. ALERT: You will be likely alarmed by the reviews and photos posted on Yelp, but keep in mind the age of these photos. These photos are largely depicting the motel's condition before the current owner purchased and renovated eighty percent of the rooms. TIPS: The reception desk closes at 8 PM, so expect a personal call in advance to learn when you anticipate arriving. The hotel staff will plan and accommodate accordingly. Nightly rates vary greatly with the seasons, with prices now congruent with other motels in the area. Second floor double rooms have balconies and sliding glass doors from which you can view the evergreens that line the property border and enjoy coastal air. There is no elevator to the second floor. There is a collection of shops and restaurants along the bay, just a short drive from motel, as well as scattered cafes and restaurants that you can "discover" along the non-commercial roads (or cheat and do a Yelp search!) Might be good idea to call ahead to confirm room type if you you did not book direct. Initially the receptionist had put aside a single room during my most recent stay, and I had reserved a more expensive double.

If I could give zero stars for this rat trap of a hotel, I would. What appears online is a huge…read moremisrepresentation. My family checked in and after going back and forth the office to get a key that would work, and upon entering the unit, found it infested with bugs. Lots of bugs of all kinds (see photo of what appears to be a cockroach). It smelled of mold/mildew and was generally gross. There was a huge gap above the door and the door wouldn't lock, which was especially troublesome given that the place was extremely creepy. It was also deserted. We were in the room probably ten minutes debating what to do and did not use any of the "amenities." We attempted to problem solve with the staff and were shut down (nobody was around to speak to). We decided to leave because we had an event to get to. We've since attempted to problem solve and the staff are extremely rude to the point of being abusive. We left and were forced to find another place last second, which cost us a lot of money. They charged us $350 and have refused to refund even part of it, hear us out, or treat us as customers or even people. I would strongly recommend avoiding this hotel and giving your hard earned money to awful people. Unless you like sleeping with mold, bugs, and doors that don't seal or lock, and like giving your money to awful, dishonest people.

The only "off putting" thing that happened is we were charged a $5 fee per person for being there because there was a band that was coming on stage in the next half hour. We were already seated at the bar and were about halfway through our drinks. We hadn't planned on staying there but acquiesced the waitress by paying the cover charge.

They only cons are the light from the front leaking through to the room through the blurred glass next to the door in the night and lack of TV remote. There is only one that controls the able box so if you want to change volume, you have to get out of bed, (the TV itself being from the 80's but it works fine). Wifi wasn't the greatest either. If you have issue with bathroom cleanliness, they will fix it right away. A bit pricey generally but it was Saturday night and it is within half hr of Newport. I'd stay again.

A snack machine would be a good update sometime. Newport Creamy just across the street for meals. Older locks on the rooms, just the old keys system. Video cameras throughout the place and a good fire alarm system.

I went through AARP for the reservation because I thought I was getting a deal. (More on that in a separate review about AARP Travel.) So we walk into a "lobby" that can only be described as the The Heart of Darkness. I half expected to see a sign that read "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." It wouldn't have been out of place in that Nicholas Cage movie Leaving Las Vegas. A good motel to off yourself. Anyway, there was no one at the front desk, which looked more like the checkout area of a liquor store in the inner city, bulletproof acrylic with a slider for handing over your credit card. Taped to the window was a hand written sign that said "No Vacancy-No Rooms. Now we're wondering if they even have our reservation. There were some covid advisory notices taped on the wall, all dated March 2020. It's August 2021. Next to the check in window there's a paper arrow taped to the wall saying "For Help". It pointed down the hall so my daughter and I walked down to see if anyone was around. Nobody was. So i called the number that was taped under the window and thus guy answers and says, "Oh, she must gave gone to lunch." It was 5:00. Five minutes later this elderly woman cones up the stairs and shows us to a room. Doesn't ask our names, doesn't look at my ID, but she does lead us down the hall to a room and says to us, "The key is on the table." We step in to the room which can't even be described as Shabby Chic and just about large enough to change your mind. While the beds were made the covers were threadbare, the furniture looked like it had just come from a rather trying move in which no bubble wrap nor tie downs were used in the truck. And i couldn't help feeling that the room was dirty. So i pulled the sheets back and I wasn't wrong. Pics below. So what is that? Blood? Worse? We weren't sticking around to find out. I called AARP and they were able to get it the reservation cancelled without any penalty. But we still needed a place to spend the night so while i was on hold with them, I started looking for hotels. Within five minutes I found a hotel 15 minutes away, for only $30 a night more, with a pool AND breakfast. The long and short of it is Wickford Motor Inn? Can't recommend.

Brian's hospitality is top notch ;knowing I needed gluten and dairy free options for breakfast he made a delicious batch of GF/DF muffins. I took my coffee and muffins out to the cozy front porch and enjoyed people watching. My room was adorable and extremely clean. I will absolutely be back for another stay very soon. The location is perfect to shops and dining and the beach. 10 out 10!!!

The staff was so incredibly kind, the fitness center was small but well played out and clean with good equipment. We used the pool as well which was nice since the weather was rainy and cold this MDW. Breakfast is always serviceable. Pretty much as average as I expect it to ever be from a Hampton Inn. I have nothing negative to say about this hotel, and I plan on staying there again next time I'm in the Narragansett area. They were great!
