From the 2D Police Box on the wall to the baristas matching blue "Keep Calm and Drink a Latte" blue shirts, this place would be any Doctor Who's fan hangout. They offer complimentary wifi, just ask for the password. They also show Doctor Who episodes on their one tv in the cafe. I had the pleasure of trying their turtle latte...deeelish! They also rotate a daily soup. Today it was pasta fagioli. Pretty good. I like the bench seating but after a few hours your butt can get a little sore. What's this? A new cafe in Elgin AND they are Doctor Who fans to boot? ALLONS-Y! We popped in for lunch on a Saturday & the place was bustling. There were still tables open so we could sit down, but they did a steady stream of business both for the coffee and the sandwiches. I had the Veggielicious & the Hubs had the Elgin Club. Both were darn good & they toasted the bread. The club sandwich didn't come with lettuce or tomato, though, so next time we would ask for that to be added (it wasn't supposed to come with it or anything, we just felt the sandwich would have been a little better with those 2 added, though it was quite delicious as is). We didn't have coffee, though, so we'll have to give that a try another time. They are open for breakfast as well, with a couple of breakfast sandwich options. They are closed on Sundays, though. read more

Really cute cafe. A great place to meet up with friends. The sandwiches are overpriced for what you get, literally a sandwich in a basket with no sides. They were decent and small. The Italian wedding soup was okay. The Chai Tea latte and caramel apple cider were excellent however. The desserts treats were also good. This place is expensive. I ordered a soup and salad for $12. I told the guy the food is to eat in the cafe and he still put the salad in a bag without the dressing. I had to ask for it. Then the soup was half way filled. I didn't notice till after I opened it when I got home. It makes no sense. The soup tasted good though. The employees were having loud conversations about personal topics. It was annoying. I'll probably order again just not eat there. The ambiance was ok except for the distracted employees. Super yummy place! My husband and I stopped through here to grab sandwiches after a lot of reviews. They're nothing crazy, but use good deli meat and were tasty. I have been here quite a few times, even when they first opened! Business has clearly boomed since then! There decor is not overkill, but had enough pictures and incorporating things to make it have that specific Doctor Who theme. As a Whovian, I think it is fantastic that this place exists(and so close to home)! I particularly love the subtle menu names that play on characters and what not from the show. I believe that even if I wasn't as knowledgeable about the show, this place could peak my interest. I love that they always have at least one tv playing Doctor Who. The food and coffee here are also good. Sandwiches are always fresh! I was amazed a couple weeks ago when I ordered a breakfast sandwich, because it was one of the best I've ever had. You get to pick your own meat, cheese, and bread. Mine was sausage and provolone on sourdough. Their selection of chips are great, and they have coke products as fountain drinks. Blue Box is a Cafe/Deli that aims to get its funky/local street cred by putting up a bunch of Dr Who memorabilia. Weird, wacky choice man. I, for example, really, truly, don't get Dr Who. Growing up we had 4 channels, one being PBS. And at times, flipping through the channels with a yardstick, I'd find that Dr Who was on. What I remember is shaky cameras, terrible sets, and a sad trombone feeling that Farty Towers, Monty Python, or even Benny Hill wasn't on instead. God I loved Farty Towers. Anyway, even though I only had 4 channels, and a yardstick remote, I never watched Dr Who more than a couple minutes at a time. Honestly I don't even know what its about. Some kind of weird space humor for really particular people who later in life buy $15K japanese toilets is my best guess. They're in outer space, right. Anyway, I've stopped by at the Cafe on my bicycle travels probably 3 or 4 times now, due to the sandwiches being really quite decent. You can be very particular too. Type of bread, meat, toasted, toppings, cheeses, avocado, etc, etc. Plus a bunch of mayonnaise and its pretty good. I usually get one for now and one for later. One other thing. Even thought they have a bunch of nonsense Dr Who junk up, its somehow underwhelming. The space is very modern, and it just seems like they threw a bunch memorabilia in that doesn't quite transform the space. So if you really are all into Dr Who +++ probably it won't blow you away. Also the bathroom is all the way down the hall in the main building. And not from Japan. What's up with that. read more

I stopped in Blue Box today for a cup of soup. They had cream of chicken wild rice and chicken tortilla. Wanting comfort food, I ordered the wild rice for take out. When I opened the container, it was yellow with white rice. I stirred it and there wasn't 1 piece of chicken. I took a 1/2 spoonful and declared, "oh my, this is awful!! It's supposed to be chicken wild rice!" It tasted like gravy, obviously made with a bouillon cube due to the color, mixed with cheap white rice. Absolutely disgusting. It was so bad, I immediately threw it in a garbage can. I'm not sure how the owners can declare themselves as foodies and they allow soup like this to be sold in their cafe!!!???!!! read more

I've been eyeing this cafe for some time and finally visited yesterday! It's located in downtown Elgin. The free parking is adjacent to the cafe. You won't have to worry about street parking in case you're not a good parallel parker! The cafe is adorably small but they do have sitting areas with outlets in some in case you want to work on some things whilst sipping on your selected beverage of choice. They do offer free WiFi but you have to ask for the password. They'll gladly give it to you with a smile! If the cafe becomes too crowded, the library is minutes away in case you need to study or complete school work. Otherwise, just sit, enjoy what you order and socialize. I ordered the Reuben sandwich and a large salted caramel iced coffee. I've read many reviews and boy, were they right! It was so good, it melted in my mouth and hit the spot! Love this place! As a former fan of Doctor Who (11th Doctor, seasons 5-7) this place was the perfect place to rekindle my love for the show. My family lives in town but I live in Southern California, so this was my first visit here! (They opened just 2 months after I moved!) Anyway visited yesterday on the second to last day of my visit. We arrived around 8:30 and the place wasn't too busy but there were a few people there which is always a good thing, I think. I spent a good minute or two marveling at the interior and atmosphere. I loved the corner with the TARDIS door and the coat rack with the coat and scarf and cane! And the fez and bow ties were so cute. It made me happy being in there. I liked the menu, it was your basic cafe menu with sandwiches and salads and coffee selections. I liked that the menu wasn't overwhelmed with the DW theme. I ate a breakfast sandwich with bacon, cheddar, and egg on sourdough. I also had a mint mocha latte which I surprisingly liked even though I'm not generally a fan of mocha coffees. They were playing season 1 of the rebooted season of Doctor Who ( 9th Doctor and Rose Tyler). It was so cool! I saw they have all these events with discussions and trivia games and was so bummed I was only visiting. If I still lived here I can guarantee you that I'd work here or be here every single day!! read more
