Such a cool vibe in this place, you just know it's going to be good. It been on my radar forever and we finally got there. The only negative i had is I wish they had some sides other then just chips, gimme some slaw or potatoe salad or something. I love slaw as a condiment, it's would be killer on their sandwiches well. Blue Box Cafe is the best coffee shop in Elgin. It has a good amount to choose from. Plenty of food here such as sandwiches. Cool concept. This is the place to go if you like Doctor Who. Apparently this place is run by nerds, so you can get a bit of quirky knowledge along with coffee. It may be the only Doctor Who themed cafe anywhere around here. This certainly may be a thing in Britain but over here not as much. Maybe the owners are British. Who knows. Anyway it's cool. The best coffee is the Jack Harkness. It's $4.50 for a cup. This is made with cherries and dark chocolate, tasty. Also they have some decent food. They have something called the Veggielicious. It's about $9 and has a lot on it. There's avocados, balsamic dressing, eggplant, lettuce, red onions, Swiss, tomatoes, and zucchini. It's vegan without cheese. The ingredients combine for creaminess and make for a good lunch. You don't have to be a Doctor Who fan to enjoy this place, but it helps you understand why it's called Blue Box Cafe. They usually have a show or two playing in their two monitors in nymute with the captions on. Their specialty coffees are worth the trip. They have excellent sandwiches as well and my favorite ones are the breakfast sandwiches, but they only serve them until 11am. It's a few blocks east of the Fox River Trail and they have bike racks making it a great stop for cyclers. read more

I had the Turkey Reuben the first time with a Chicken Noodle soup and loved it so much, I craved another one as soon as my meal was over. Next day, I found them on Groupon and quickly bought a coupon. When I visited again just a week ago to redeem it, now 5 months later, the sandwich still did not disappoint. This time I ordered extra Chicken Pot Pie and Beef Vegetables soup (about $3 each). All tasted delicious and feels like home-made. The kids loved it too. The staff were personally and friendly and combined it with their cool Dr Who decor and also that Iron Man 2 was playing on their wall TVs it made for an intimate and relaxing atmosphere. The Blue Box appears to have gone through a change of ownership. I ordered online and when I got there to pick up, the restaurant was Smokey with a sticky floor. I went again a few weeks later, the floor was still sticky but the service was much better. There was a blond young lady who seemed to be in charge and it was a noticeable improvement in service. We ordered sandwiches for an office lunch today. We sent the order in yesterday and there was a phone number on the order. We paid by credit card. Today we went to pick it up and nothing was ready. They said "oh, we didn't know that was for today". It said so on the order sheet . And why not call if you are unsure? So then they make the food and two of the people's food wasnt made correctly. For anyone who loves Doctor Who, the Blue Box Cade is a perfect place to rekindle your love for it. There are decorations all around the cafe and a TV playing the show. Downtown Elgin itself isn't too exciting but the area has a lot of history. A lot of love has been put into this coffee shop! I had the Mint Madness being a huge fan of mint which wasn't bad. There was whipped cream in it too. There are also sandwiches and salads. The walls are covered with blue phone booths and British coffee mugs and all sorts of things related to the Doctor. It was toasted white bread with turkey and roast beef, Italian seasoning and a vinaigrette with lettuce and red onion. I loved it. I want another one already.
