German restaurants are surprisingly rare out west and I haven't eaten German food in decades. I grew up with a German immigrant step father and I think he was most homesick for the food. Even though I had a most complicated relationship with him, I still have fond memories of him and miss him. My son and husband ate here about a year prior and have never stopped talking about it and promised to bring me on our next trip. I have a weird dietary restriction, but I could eat off this menu and anything I wanted, which made me soooooo happy. I had the pork roulade and a raspberry beer for dinner. On Sunday I had the Bananas foster French toast. All of the food was excellent, well crafted and well served. We had the caramel pecan cheesecake and my husband, who is the biggest critic and curmudgeon around desserts, was in love with it. I saw a few reviews that the food wasn't authentic, but as it happened the table next to us was a German gentleman (from Germany ) and he seemed absolutely delighted with ALL of it. As was the ghost of my stepfather. It definitely has an old school dark wood, typical German vibe going back to the late 80's/90's. If you want something hip and trendy, well, go somewhere else. I recently ate here the weekend before last with my family for my moms birthday. We made reservations for brunch. Upon arrival, we were sat right away and served waters. Shortly after, we got our orders taken and our food came out not too long later. Everything looked so delicious and tasted great! I shared both of these items with my partner and they were amazing. The french toast was so rich but had amazing flavor. Crisp, thick cut bacon - the sausage was cooked perfectly, and lastly the fruit was fresh. We also had some coffee and a mimosa to share. It's been ages, like 20+ years since I've been here. The interior does remind me of some pubs in Germany, the music was wild & out of place- think old show tunes...Fun, and a little bizarre. Getting there @ 10am on Sunday, it was quiet & I was concerned, but the super friendly staff were encouraging. My server was confused if they had grapefruit, but turns out they do (sort of). I ordered a salty dog, but it was unexpectedly very sweet, maybe the juice had added sugar. More like grapefruit soda. Not a big deal, but I'll order wine or off their drink menu next visit. On to the food, which was delicious. I ordered the burnt end pork belly Benedict and my friend had the chicken schnitzel. Our food came out quite quickly & were very sizable portions. I tasted the schnitzel & it was very good, a tad bit salty, but otherwise very well seasoned & delicious. My eggs Benedict came with lots of roasted potatoes & was really good. The honey coated pork belly was truly a treat! I neglected to take photos while dining, but here's my plate of warmed up leftovers to give you an idea, this is less than half of what I was served. Also since we paid cash, any slice of house-made dessert (Bavarian chocolate cake) was complimentary & went home with my friend. Was in Coos Bay for a few days and searched for dog friendly restaurants. Blue Heron came up as a possibility and the German heritage intrigued me. Was so happy to see a public parking lot with a couple RV spots. Very welcome. Was greeted at front rather coolly by service staff that said, "yes, we have an outdoor dog friendly covered patio, but I'm the only one working tonight, so could be a long time for you to get service". I said, that's ok, I drove all the way over here, I'll take my chances. I'm glad I did. The service turned out great and I had a wonderful dinner. Lots of traditional German/Bavarian fare, both food and drink. Helped myself to a legit German Hefeweizen and a glass of German Pinot Blanc. Good start. Paired that with a cup of really good Hungarian goulash, then a surf and turf that included steak, salmon, shrimp and oysters. The goulash came with a piece of bread that melted in my mouth. I asked my server and she told me they baked all their own bread and make their own desserts there. That convinced me to finish my meal with a slice of Bavarian chocolate cake. OMG. It was perfect. The patio where I sat had 4-5 picnic tables and is covered, heated, but no AC. It is dog friendly though which is important to me. To start, food was great; no complaints there other than it's missing those authentic flavors. However the food gets a 9/10. The service however... we came in 30 minute prior to the rest of our group (8 total). We came in stated we had a large group and would wait for them at the bar. We were sat at the bar and ignored for about 15 minutes until the nice younger waitress with a face piercing asked what we wanted to drink. We told her we were waiting for 6 more, and before we could tell her what we wanted to drink.. the older waitress with her hair in a bubble braid who was filling a beer pipped in with an attitude and said "and you didn't make a reservation?"... it's Tuesday in a small town so no. And she made it seem like the end of the world that we had a party of 8. However the nice younger waitress sat us at a table and walked off to grab us waters. As she was gone the older lady came back and took our drink orders. I told her what I want and she listed 3 sizes and asked what I wanted. My boyfriend asked for the same beer I got and before he could finish that he didn't want what I added to it she cut him off and said what size with an attitude. The group gets there and we order and the older waitress brings our food out. She's holding two plates and is asking who got what. Maybe 5 seconds pass of us trying to sort out who's is who's she again with an attitude tells us to figure it out because the plate is hot. Someone in our party just told her to set it down and we will figure it out. We get all our food and realize we have a plate of food no one ordered and we're missing a plate. We try to explain the plate we had wasn't ordered and again before finishing she says well you said that's yours. The person in our group replied that he said to set it down because she complained it was hot. Not that it was his. Our waitress came and saved the day & the older lady stormed off & thankfully never came back . One of our favorite places for barbecue here in Coos Bay and we love their German menu as well as the root beer they have on tap. They have lots of other drink options as well as a pretty great happy hour menu. Now we are kicking ourselves for only recently discovering how fantastic their brunch is! It really start off right when our three year-old started fussing a bit and not 30 seconds later the chef/owner Adam came out with a small bowl of fruit for him. I only thought to take a picture of our chicken fried schnitzel, but we also enjoyed a breakfast burrito, and the kids had French toast that was just divine. This place is magic the moment you walk through the door. I called ahead and made reservations for noon. As soon as we enterred she called me by name and escorted us right to our table. I had Saurbraten which came with German cpleslaw & potatoes. very generous portions and no one went away hungry. Oh my friend Terry had the deep fried oyster plate and he ate everyone. The Happy Hour starts at 4 pm and goes on and on until 5 pm for one hour at $2 off of any beer listed over $7. The German Gold beer is like the Pale Ale from the best brewery, the Pilsner has refreshing fruit and honey flavors! The Knackwurst has pork and veal and the fried oysters are served freshly. The food was delicious and real. I ordered the fish and chips and a steak of the week. My steak was juicy and cooked perfectly, seasoned potatoes were also good with greens. The fish was seasoned and fried to perfection, fillets were chunky pieces of real fish. The fries were seasoned and fried perfectly. I came in 30 minutes before close so I was afraid they wouldn't be able to help me but the hostess was more than gracious and even gave me a free piece of cake. My food came out quick and it was so delicious, really. Great place to sit, warm and welcoming with animal heads hanging to give it that rustic homey feel. Ready to help you with any needs you may have. The restaurant is a very cozy place and they have an outside area for those diners who like to be out in the sun. However, they may be opened this Monday and be closed next Monday. They have regular hours posted on the door, but that does not mean that the restaurant will be open on any particular day. You may go down with your family to enjoy a wonderful meal at the blue herring bistro just to find out that for some unknown reason the restaurant is closed. I have gone down with a friend on a Thursday and even know the sign said open and the hours on the door said they should be open. They were not. You can be the most wonderful restaurant on earth, but if people have to guess when you will be opened or close is the flip of a coin. I would definitely recommend calling and verifying if they will be open on any particular day before I drove down with a dinner party just to find out they should be open, but they are not. read more

We recently re-discovered Blue Heron Bistro and were more than pleasantly surprised. Inside we found an adorable German backdrop with excellent food and friendly service! We will be going back again and again to our new favorite lunch spot! We enjoyed the fresh baked carrot cake so much- we went back the following day for a second taste! We can attest to several delicious desserts including huckleberry, chocolate and raspberry selections. The wine list was great and choices on the menu will suit just about anyone. The clam chowder was delicious! We aren't wine snobs, but appreciated the wine was served in the correct stemware. The bread (MADE IN HOUSE!) was fabulous. It arrived what seemed fresh out of the oven- with the pat of butter INSIDE to melt. It's so frustrating to get cold bread and hard butter. They have this down pat. The side of carrots tasted like someones grandmother had been at the stove all day. Will order again. The coleslaw was wonderful! No mayonnaise in site and the cabbage was the perfect size shred. Sitting on the corner of Commercial Ave & Highway 101, you just might drive right by this place if you're not looking for it. Offered a choice of outside or eating inside, we chose a booth inside. The owner was our waiter & was very friendly, jovial & of course, very knowledgeable of his menu. Because of the dreaded virus, they have whittled the menu down to a bare minimum, but, after our meal, I've a feeling it's all delicious! I went with grilled salmon with mashed potatoes. It comes with a salad & a cup of goulash. Wow! Was that goulash wonderful. Honestly, I'd would've been happy with just a large bowl of that. And freshly made baked bread, just wonderful. The salmon was tender & flaky & the mashed potatoes were just as good. For dessert we shared a chunk of carrot cake. Again, moist, delicious cake covered in a cream cheese icing.
