We went for my birthday. The worst birthday ever. I ordered a steak and asked them not to butterfly it. It came an hour later. They butterflyed it. It was half an inch thick. I asked the waitress why. She said the chef said he was falling behind so he rushed it. I asked for the manager and she wouldn't come out. So we paid the bill and left. They don't make the food to the way you want. They make it the fast way with grease dripping from it. read more

Oh my goodness, what a wonderful restaurant & meal. We had made reservations for four & were seated next to their wall of windows offering a fantastic view. Clean white table cloths lent a classy, elegant feel to the restaurant. Service was quick & friendly. Our waitress was polite & patient as she answered our questions about the menu. After studying the menu we choose appetizers, soups & entrees. I went with the Baked Halibut in Casserole. A delicious mix of halibut, Dungeness crab & bay shrimp, covered in a Mornay & Hollandaise sauce. That sauce had a silky coat-your-mouth consistency that I found to be delicious. A vibrantly colorful helping of vegetable medley & creamy garlic mashed potatoes accompanied the meal. But, make no mistake, the seafood casserole was the star here. The Mrs choose the Combo Seafood Sauté. Scallops, shrimp, halibut & Bay shrimp in a cream & Parmesan cheese Alfredo sauce, served over buttery pasta. Again, just absolutely decedent. Another in our party of four had their Surf & Turf. A New York steak, with deep fried shrimp. She choose the Swiss fried potatoes as her side & were they good. After sharing a bite with everyone, she had to defend her meal as she ate. A moist, gooey six layer chocolate cake was shared for dessert. Having a $100+ dinner and having to deal with flies is so unacceptable. Constantly shooing them off. I told the waitress and she said she would tell the hostess but nothing was ever done. Still love the Hilltop House, visited several times since my first review. I finally took pictures of the food and more of the property so wanted to share. We were last there on my husband's birthday on Saturday, January 13. My husband had the surf and turf - NY with fried butterflied shrimp; our son had the seafood lasagna; I had a special- the 5/5/5. This is five small filet pieces, five shrimp and five crab claws. My husband said the NYs are always flavorful and he loves the shrimp. We didn't take any food photos in January but I've included some from an earlier visit. My go to is usually the crab salad, which I have included a picture of as well as some other items and exterior shots. This is a 5 star restaurant, problem was that the shrimp on my Alfredo was overcooked. The lamb appetizer is amazing. Don't have to get a rack to try this amazing dish. Mushrooms stuffed and cheesy so beautiful. Wine deliteful snd steak was cooked as ordered and perfectly seasoned. You can't do wrong but take at least 100.00. Nothing inexpensive here! It also takes a full hour or more as the food is all freshly prepared. Ambiance was nice, older building and decor. Saw a deer right outside the windows. Wall of windows need updated and whole lower level leans a bit. Service amazing and i mean they have it done quick and as requested. read more

Hilltop is the place to go for steaks in this area. I have been there a number of times and always had a good meal. A little expensive though. Last Friday I took my wife to dinner there. Staff were their usual norm. I watched one of the kitchen staff go into the bathroom wearing nytril gloves. He walked out of the bathroom wearing nytril gloves. A short time later I saw him do it again. I went into the bathroom and looked in the only storage area in the bathroom. Under the sink. No gloves anywhere. At this point I am now more than concerned about the "ingredients" in my meal. Gloves in a commercial kitchen are a single use item. I aske to speak with the chef in charge and was told he was busy but would try to come out. He never came out. My intent was to speak with him quietly on the side and let him know what I had seen. It didn't happen. Knowing what I know now, I wont be back. The "seasoning" doesn't agree with my pallet. read more

My husband has the fried seafood combo, which was also delicious. The fried calamari was perfectly cooked and fresh!!! Portion sizes on everything was large so we did not get to dessert. We sat in the area with large windows overlooking the bay, which was a little warm for me. Although the sunset view was STUNNING. There is another seating area inside that was cooler in terms of temperature. It was a lengthy wait for our meal: longer than the norm. Staff were friendly. It appears be a local's favorite. The dinner salad was full of veggies and delicious. Then came the entrees which were all halibut. It was served with a fluffy moist focaccia bread with oil and vinegar (ask for butter if you prefer). As far as I'm concerned, this is the BEST seafood in the area. It is fine dining so expect a hefty price tag but worth the splurge. Being a retired Chef I believe I have a little knowledge on food preparation.Salad, small nice presentation but very limp lettuce,could NOT believe they served it. Specifically requested blue cheese melted over top of wife's filet instead served in cup on plate though the meat was cooked perfectly. My Seafood platter was the worst I've ever seen or tasted: Could have purchased better at Casino in local area. Over cooked, no substance mostly batter and missing scallops. Still have a few years left to live but doubt if we will ever step foot in that establishment again and definitely wouldn't recommend to any one. read more

Let me start by saying that I have been here probably a total of 8 times and every other time has probably been a 3-4 star experience. But today, me and my wife's second anniversary dinner was utterly ruined by the staff here and the experience that we had. Reservation for 2 was set and we arrived on time. Got sat by the hostess who was very nice, told us that she would let our server know that we arrived. It took at least 15 minutes for the server to arrive and take our drink orders. Meanwhile a table of 4 who showed up after us already had their appetizers. My wife didn't like the drink, and the server said sorry I can't take it off the bill. But offered another drink at full price. We took the drink and just agreed that we would confront a manager about this before we leave. Then We had to actually ask for a basket of bread because the server didn't bring us any. Then we get our salads. Mine was supposed to be a Caesar salad. See it below. Pretty sure that's not a Caesar. It didn't even have dressing. But the server was nowhere to be seen, next time we saw her was when she was bringing out the food so I decided to just let it go and eat the food. My wife ordered a medium rare steak and it arrived medium well. My steak was fine but the fry's were way over salted. At this point we were fed up entirely. We asked the poor hostess to see a manager. She came back a few minutes later, saying that the owner is also the chef, and that he is so busy that he has no time for customer complaints. He has to keep cooking. So if we wanted to talk to him, we would have to go see him in the kitchen. I said fine, so the hostess walked me and my wife in to the kitchen (is that sanitary?) where we met the "owner". He barely acknowledged me and basically told me he has no time to deal with this. While I was talking to him he kept trying to cut me off, and I had to get stern with him and argue about how terrible my experience was until he finally offered to cut 50% off the order. I looked at my wife and she nodded yes so we accepted the offer and were happy to leave. We go out to our car and then sit there for a second, Talking about the terrible service and the rude owner. Then we see a cat walk out of the door to the kitchen, which is located in the back of the building. directly across from where we parked. I was stunned to see a animal in such a nice restaurant's kitchen so I pulled out my phone and actually got pictures of it outside the door. Then a few moments later it stood up and I switched to video. I started recording as the cat walked into the kitchen. I got out of the car and walked up to the doorway and I found the cat walking around freely caught it on video. When it noticed me it hid underneath a industrial size food mixer. Around that time is when the owner and his buddy came up to me and started yelling, then his buddy actually put his hand on me and shoved me when I wasn't even in the kitchen, I was standing in the doorway. So in the end I had terrible service on my anniversary. Saw a cat roaming in the kitchen I just ate from. And got assaulted. Thank you hill top. I will never return to your disgusting establishment and I hope you get a thorough health inspection soon. read more

We had anticipated an excellent dinner and it started out great with delicious stuffed mushrooms and salad, but the disappoint came when I took a bite of the lasagna and it was very spicy. Please note, I try to order things that aren't spicy because of my allergic reaction to spices. I asked the waitress why the lasagna was so spicy, she went to ask the chef and he said it might be the ginger. I really couldn't taste the ginger but it didn't make any difference, I couldn't eat it. She proceeded to take my plate away, and I decided that I would order more stuffed mushrooms for my dinner. The waitress then returned stating that the chef would not remove the cost of the lasagna. I have never had a "fine dining" restaurant make you pay for a dinner that you weren't happy with. If they would have said that sooner, I could have taken my leftovers home, and my husband could have eaten it the next day. Needless to say, I was very upset, cancelled the mushrooms, paid our bill and left. I will not be returning to this establishment and would caution those who cannot tolerate spicy foods, this is not the restaurant for you. read more

Well, I have been a customer here for at least 40 years. Unfortunately, last Saturday evening, I attended with family members. We also had reservations. I am not sure if there is new management, but the only waitress there, was not only very RUDE, but it took a total of 2 hours to receive our dinner for 3 people. I have encouraged a lot of people to come and visit. I will NEVER do that again! If you are not convinced, please try it out! And plan 3 hours of your time to be treated rudely and waiting for mediacore food! SHAME! read more

The ambiance is okay but not excellent considering that you need to drop at minimum $100 here to eat. The food is subpar at best. Something is either overcooked or undercooked every time you go. It's definitely a status restaurant in this area. It screams I can afford to go here and waste all my money. This is why I cook at home. The wait staff is acceptable. Like I said nothing great nothing special nothing motivating me to drop the amount of money that needs to be dropped at this restaurant for two people to eat. This place was great, and honestly, my favorite part of the whole establishment was the BAR! What a great old throwback to earlier days - it reminded me of an old-fashioned supper club in Wisconsin (see pic). The food was excellent and the staff was extremely helpful and kind, for we were a rowdy bunch from all over the West Coast, there for an 85th birthday celebration. I would 10/10 go back there! We started with the crab & artichoke dip, cake out so hot I had a thumb size water blister in my mouth afterwards so be careful. FIL had the shrimp sauté, MIL had the crab cakes and raved about them (that was why she picked the place), husband had the seafood combo (he said it was 'alright') and I had the house special surf & turf. This place is amazing. Expected Frank Sinatra to be setting at the bar. Classic seafood and steak house. Called for a reservation the day we wanted to come. Very nice hostess said she would do everything she could to see we had a window table and she delivered. Service was excellent and very busy for a Tuesday night. The crab cocktail was to die for. Clam chowder was very good. Entries were hot and satisfying. I would say this is one of the best dinner houses on the Oregon coast. Will return next time we are in the coos bay area. read more

Wow! I was a bit wary, since this place needs a major interior upgrade- truly stuck in the 80s, when they could make this into a retro gem. Views out the window were lovely, even from the higher level. Service was great, friendly and prompt. Fried calamari was the second-best I've had. Clam chowder had clams (a lot!) in every spoonful. Family had prawns, seafood pasta, and grilled halibut. I had the halibut almandine with a lovely citrus sauce- SO GOOD. Garlic mash was a hit, and even the vegetable accompaniment was fresh and tasty. Too full for dessert, so not sure about that. My cocktail was delicious. Can't wait to go back again. read more

We were told to check out this place by some friends & had the worst experience we have EVER had at a restaurant. I would like to start out by saying the hostess was very sweet & I'm sad that she is the face for the waitress/waiter that wasn't up for doing her job. We had a reservation for 7PM, sat at our table for 20 minutes with no service - hostess came over to check on us & to see if we had been helped, we said no. At the 30 minute mark, the hostess checked in again since she had reminded our waitress/waiter of our table the first time she checked in with us, still have not been waited on. We decided to leave this establishment after 40 minutes of waiting. We would recommend to spend your well earned money elsewhere too! read more

Great view. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. We had a table overlooking the water & once the food came out I didn't even notice the decor. There were four of us. We had the 1) Baked Stuffed Halibut (stuffed with crab and bay shrimp) in a Hollandaise and Mornay Sauce. 2) Lightly breaded Halibut. 3) Ribeye 4) Surf & Turf (topped with caramelized onions & Roquefort cheese sauce). Everyone loved their food- with raves about the Stuffed Halibut and Roquefort cheese sauce! Most had a baked with the entree but I had the Garlic Pasta which was delicious and really a meal all its own. The Italian Sausage Vegetable soup was really good. Sadly for my husband, the Manhattan clam chowder was not even close-not red and had a strange strong flavor that was not good. Our waitress greeted us and we didn't see her until check time. Alicia was very attentive with the water and really ended up taking care of us. They were busy and Alicia hustled from table to table but was always professional and got us everything we needed. I felt awkward walking in the door. The waitress seemed to ignore any smile or eye contact to say hello. A good steak no doubt. Seasoned like a real chef would with excess but tender and flavorful. However everything went downhill from that. We had high expectations and choose this place as the high end restaurant for the area. Nice view. The first thing was the bread. A large basket of garlic breadsticks with oil and balsamic. No different than Pizza Hut. The clam Chowder was 16 dollar a bowl so I took a cup. Not a lot of clam flavor more bacon and potato. Still ok. The house salad is deconstructed with as much packaged chopped carrots and shredded purple cabbage as Romain lettuce. Tiny plate so couldn't mix it and most of it would not go onto a fork. My mom wouldn't eat the ranch dressing and that's her favorite. The oysters came in a dish without the shells. This says we are not fresh but frozen whether they are or not. Difficult to shoot with a fork. The reason for the review is not as much the food or the service but the customer service. I talked my dad into the rack of lamb. When I order that I am expecting a rack, not a bed of chops. My dad took the first bite and almost spit it out. The amount of salt crust on the tiny chops was so large it was inedible. I tried them and agree they were way to salty and to be enjoyable. Now the hook. We told the waitress that we could not eat the lamb because it was way to salty. She looked at me like and? What is you want like a discount? I said I don't know. Whatever you can do for customers who can't eat the expensive 47 dollar dish you served. She said there were no managers In but would talk to the chef. She came back and said. The chef says he cooked the lamb to perfection. He would not give any discount. He left me no choice but to put out the warning if you want to impress or have an elegant dinner this place falls far from expectations over many less high end places that would always assure the customer is satisfied.
