We attempted to secure a dinner reservation approximately 1 month before arrival, but were told we would be put on a long list and never received a return call. On entering on the first night we inquired again and were told they were fully booked up. We did take advantage of the happy hour twice though it proved to be a bit disappointing in comparison to prior years. The happy hour runs 5-6PM daily and is limited to 6 specialty cocktails costing $6.99 each. All well and good, but we were disappointed that the pinchos are now one per customer rather than one per drink. Secondly, and more importantly, the specialty cocktails, at least the 3 we had, were pre-made and quite obviously less than generous with the alcohol. Incredible meal!! Make a reservation early, like a month or more early. Their dining room is small and guests who stay at the inn get the first priority in dinner reservations. Emily and Owen were very friendly and welcoming even though we were not inn guests! They have a small bar area, 4 high top seating and two other tables. We weren't lucky enough to get a reservation but were in town and joined for happy hour which was 5-6pm. Special is $6 signature cocktails (menu is rotating). I tried the peach martini and cranberry fizz and both were excellent. Each drink came with a complimentary hor d'oeuvres; one was a pork slice bite and the other was a salmon cream bite. Both excellent and what ultimately sold us to ordering curbside pickup! We ordered during happy hour and our food was ready in 30 minutes! Everything was delicious and packaged very well! I can understand why Chef Michael is award winning. The cornbread was soft and moist. The gnocchi lobster app was a family favorite; the cream sauce in the dish was amazing. I loved the hanger steak dish; steak was cooked just as I like and the veggies/feta were fresh! The corn chowder with lobster was also light and refreshing; I loved that you could taste the basil. Blueberry macaroons for dessert were very sweet and a great way to end the meal! Overall, hands down the best meal this foodie has had this year (and to say that about takeout is saying something!)!! To truly appreciate the Hartstone, partake in as much as possible when it comes to the amenities at the Hartstone. For our anniversary, my husband and I spent just 1 night at The Hartstone. Even though the stay was short, the time was treasured! After an easy check-in, I was quickly settled into our cozy room, The Loft, and preparing for the dinner reservation that I had added onto the initial reservation. While I finished my hair and makeup, the husband went down to the bar and enjoyed a complimentary cocktail and hors d'oeuvre during Happy Hour for guests at the inn--he was even able to order an extra cocktail for me, a Rosemary Lemon Drop, so that I could join him as soon as I was ready! We sipped on our cocktails until our dinner reservation and then headed into the dining room to be seated at a lovely 2-top that looked out on the patio garden. We enjoyed the 3-course meal and a bottle of wine! Everything tasted wonderful! We finished our wine off our on the patio beside the gas fireplace. At the end of the night it was easy to fall asleep in "The Loft," which had a skylight right above the bed where we were able to watch the raindrops fall from the sky. It was a pretty good nights rest! The breakfast the next morning was just as tasty as the dinner the night before--compliments to the chef! Basically, if you go to the Hartstone, take advantage of everything! It's really the only way to do it right! Even though I loved my stay at the Hartstone Inn, I had to knock a star off this review, because the gas fireplace did not work in our room. We attempted to call the innkeeper, but it was already after hours at 8pm and went to voicemail. I had intentionally looked for a B&B that had a gas fireplace to set a cozy and romantic mood, so I was bummed when we ended up not being able to utilize it. read more

This place came highly recommended by my mother, and when it comes to food I listen to my mother! This highly acclaimed restaurant didn't disappoint. Let's start with the oysters! We love some oyster when they are fresh. Brûlée oysters had bacon, spinach and cream. They tasted great. I mean what doesn't go with bacon! Raw oysters were sweet and crisp. We could have eaten a dozen more! But then everyone would have been staring at us. Appetizers Chilled corn chowder with tiger shrimp. I had one bite of it and my wife slapped my hand away and guarded this dish! It was excellent. A chilled chowder was a first for me but it's taste and texture was perfect. Basil cannelloni was amazing. Fresh rolled pasta filled with more fresh ingredients. You can immediately taste a difference when the herbs are fresh from the garden. Entrees: Cod with jasmine rice and asparagus.... my oh my! Again my wife guarded this one line a bear! I did get 2 bites! The sauce was amazing and everything was cooked perfectly. I had the salmon with roasted potatoes. Salmon was cooked perfectly, green beans were al dente. I was more impressed with the cod dish! But mine was good. Deserts: Cream brûlée was excellent, had a great depth of flavor and was smooth. Soufflés was my first and my god man... it was awesome. Neither is available and i had to ask specifically to find out, after I had checked in. the breakfast was worse then Waffle House, complete with dead hydrangeas on every table. Let me say first of that I almost never give give star reviews. It requires perfection in all aspects. If it weren't for some staff shortcomings, Hartstone would have easily earned that rating. The food was perfection, beautiful, tasty, and inventive. Everything you want from a meal. The staff was very friendly and really tried hard, but they were not particularly knowledgeable about the food or wines, and seemed disorganized. When we asked questions about the wines on offer the server really didn't seem very familiar with the wines, when a neighboring table was asking about preparation of a dishes, we overheard a half-answer and an inability to answer a follow-up question. All tried hard, but they seemed inexperienced and not well trained in the menu. We didn't make a reservation until 3 months before so had to take an early table! All the courses were great starting with their signature cocktails, a peach martini and a blueberry gin fizz. We started with the caprese salad for me and the cucumber soup for my wife. The caprese salad combined heirloom tomatoes of several varieties with fresh mozzarella and birth a nice basil pesto and basil leaves. The balsamic reduction was nicely concentrated workout being a syrupy glaze. The cold cucumber soup captured the essence of the vegetable and turned out into a delicious soup. The butter poached lobster was wonderful with a rosemary flavored sauce. Who knew that rosemary went with lobster as well as tarragon? This was accompanied by potatoes Anna (thinly sliced potatoes layered and cooked with butter), and roasted cauliflower florets of several colors. The highlight was the Meyer lemon tart which has a truly ethereal pastry crust. One of the best desserts ever. The chocolate Panna Cotta was also superb, smooth and set just enough to hold together without being too rubbery or firm. Served with a bit of vanilla creme anglais and a tasty but brittle. Despite the staff issues this is a really fine restaurant. Hopefully they will get over their pandemic induced staff issues soon. read more

Our Recent Stay at Hartstone Inn in Camden, Maine: A Disappointing Experience I must say, we were extremely disappointed with our recent stay at the Hartstone Inn over the Fourth of July weekend. At over $700 per night, we expected accommodations commensurate with the price, but instead, we found the inn to be incredibly lackluster at best. The room we rented was advertised as the Garden Suite. However, it was anything but a suite. Yes, the room had a living space downstairs and a king-sized bed upstairs, but the bathroom, which was literally about 3 feet wide by 8 feet long, was at the foot of the bed with no more than 2 feet separating the two. In the bathroom, the toilet was wedged in about 18 inches away from the vanity. It felt more like a broom closet than what you would expect in a suite. The two breakfasts were a complete disaster--poorly prepared food and even worse service. The table linens looked like they had been wadded up in a ball for weeks, and the lack of attention to detail was evident. It took three separate requests just to get a small amount of syrup for our pancakes (which were cold by the time the syrup arrived), and butter seemed to be scarcer than gold. Don't expect your morning coffee to be readily available, either. On the first morning, there was enough coffee for both my wife and I to get a half cup each, and on day two, there was enough for my wife to get a quarter of a cup while I settled for a half glass of orange juice. Despite our requests for more coffee when another pot was brewed, it never happened--which was fine because there is a coffee shop around the corner. In addition to our disappointing experience with the accommodations and service, we also had a concerning incident during our stay. Upon returning to our room after it had been made up, we were shocked to find that the door was left unlocked. It was disconcerting to see that all our luggage, computers, and even a pocketbook were left available to anyone with the simple desire to enter the room and take whatever they wanted, with just a turn of the door handle. Overall, this was a horrific inn experience, and I would strongly advise against ever staying here. For the price we paid, we could have easily forgone the "inn experience" and booked a room at a much more pleasant hotel offering better amenities and views. Save your money and look elsewhere for a more enjoyable stay. If the room had been priced at a reasonable $250 a night, comparable to a stay at a Marriott Courtyard, we might have tolerated some of the shortcomings. However, this was not the case. I would caution anyone considering a stay here to proceed with caution. Save yourself the disappointment and look elsewhere for a more enjoyable and worthwhile stay. It is clear that improvements are needed on multiple fronts before this inn can be considered a reputable and reliable choice for accommodations. From the exorbitant rates to the subpar accommodations, poor breakfast service, and concerning lack of security measures, it is evident that this inn is not worthy of being in a charming destination like Camden, Maine. I strongly advise against staying at this inn and recommend exploring other lodging options in the area that offer better value, service, and overall experience. Save yourself the disappointment and frustration by avoiding this establishment altogether. read more

My husband decided to stay at the Hartstone Inn for our first stay in Camden, Me after reading many reviews. I am so glad we did. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our room was cozy and comfortable. (Cottage suite) I am a little OCD about cleaning, so the place is not perfect, but I feel like no hotel/accommodations are. There is always something you can find that needs to be cleaned. I definitely felt more comfortable in this Inn than I did at our previous stop at a Hampton. The only complaints I may have is the water in the shower is touchy and goes from really hot to cold easy (to be expected in an old Inn) and I'm short 5'0, I had a hard time looking in the mirror in the bathroom and stepping in and out of the bathtub. So if you are older or short like me, it's do-able, but you may want to take this in consideration. This room is also next to the kitchen. Banging of pans may be heard during the day. Also kitchen staff may walk by outside your window to go to the kitchen. Don't be alarmed. We joined everyone for cocktail hour from 5-6. The drinks were good and the price was good at $6. Dinner was amazing and we enjoyed every bite. Breakfast is included. Note that you can just go in and sit at a table. You do not have to wait to be seated. I would definitely stay at the Hartstone Inn in the future. It was so much fun and the town of Camden is cute. Walking distance to the Main Street as well. Stayed here for two nights and dined here the first night. Three course meal was outstanding, lamb chop first course was a home run so tender and perfectly cooked. Wife really enjoyed her grilled romaine salad as well. We both got the hanger steak for second course and all I can say is wow. Delicious steak cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes with bleu cheese were to die for. Lastly I got the dark chocolate mousse and my wife the maple crème brûlée. Both were amazing. The food was ok which is a bit of a let down when expecting fine dining. My chowder was good. My wife's steak was bland. My duck was a bit dry but had decent flavor the accompaniments were odd. This place is sooooo romantic. We were one of three tables dining in the bar area on a recent Friday night, and we got incredible service and delicious food. The chef clearly really cares about the food and making diners happy--he didn't have to include a delicate amuse-bouche and a zingy sorbet, but he did, and that kind of detail was evident throughout the meal. The wine list is really impressive for a small inn, and the servers were so darn friendly we wanted to come back just to hang out with them. (We weren't able to, but next time.) We went to the Inn for a post birthday pre Valentines celebration and relaxing get away. The inn was beautiful and the rooms gave you a cozy resort getaway feel. We were treated to the most delectable selection of food throughout our stay. The food was so beautifully plated. If eating for you is a visual and well a tasting experience you want be disappointed. Sometimes I feel I'm a bit too generous when I give out Five Stars. In the case of Hartstone Inn I feel that they're owed a couple more stars! We visited Maine last year and through our daughter's recommendation discovered this gem of a property. We decided at the last minute to visit New Hampshire and after checking distances, it was a no brainer to come back to Hartstone for a couple of nights. In fact, we planned our travel dates around Hartstone availability which at this point was quite slim. Our second visit was just as nice as our first. Last year, we chose the Mansard room. This year we enjoyed Paris. The weather wasn't as nice as one year ago so we enjoyed fireplaces both in the lobby parlor and one that was in our room. Happy hour is always an enjoyable time with excellent drinks and an opportunity to meet and chat with some of the other guests. The first night of our stay we ate at Hartstone's restaurant. Excellent food and service as before. The breakfasts which are included in your room rate are also quite excellent. Most Bed and Breakfast places we've stayed usually offer one or at the most two offerings in the morning as in "if it's Monday, you're getting omelettes. Hartstone has a breakfast menu with 5 or 6 entree's daily-we've enjoyed most of them! The main building which we stayed in was built in 1835 and is maintained and in a true upscale fashion. Service in the restaurant and bar was great as was the housekeeping. Sometimes you wonder if it will be as good the second time. It was! Great property, great staff. read more

Absolutely AMAZING! I can't stress enough how much I appreciated this experience. I brought my elderly mother here for a special treat. I felt like I was walking into another world when I entered the front doors. The warmth, cozy lighting, and lovely aromas welcomed us in. We were seated near the fireplace in the most lovely room that I never wanted to leave. The drinks were delicious, the chef's creations were all so wonderful that my mother and I couldn't get over it. We felt truly spoiled by the entire adventure. The service was professional and the allowance for letting us take our time was appreciated. This place has something very special. I hope the locals will realize what a treasure they have and support them more as it was not as busy as it truly should have been on this Saturday evening. Be aware this BnB has two locations (not across the street as stated by staff when you check in). Lavender Suite is up a very narrow small tread stairway has a private toilet with the vessel sink (very high to use) and the tub shower is next to the entry way and looks into the sitting area. Not as described. This BnB is not owner run and does not have an owner onsite. This lends itself to lack of maintenance, locks don't work or get stuck so you are struggling to get out of your room. The grounds are overgrown, the shutters have slats missing or broken. The buffet breakfast is passable but no service to pick up used dishes or offer added coffee. This is well below what was expected to be an enjoyable stay is a sub par room. Find a different location and pass this one by. read more

My Husband and I stayed in the Rose Hip Room "across the street" from the main Inn. We were traveling with another couple who also stayed at the secondary location. It was the first day for the new Manager. He was very responsive to our needs, e.g. WiFi wasn't working, and immediately dispatched the Maintenance Man to address other issues, e.g. clogged tub. While Camden is an enchanting town, The Hartstone Inn & Hideaway needs a little love. We ate dinner in the main dining room and were very pleased with the food and service. If we were traveling to Camden again we would stay at the main Inn rather than the secondary location. read more

The suite was small, the furnishings were sparse and uncomfortable, the two televisions had few channels and no access to Netfix through our account. Most electrics needed new batteries. This was my husband and I's first time visiting The Hartstone Inn & Hideaway and overall it was a tremendous visit! We had such a wonderful time being in the heart of downtown Camden with views of the Bay close by. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating, the food was emaculate. We participated in the 5-course Chef's dinner which was sooo yummy! Michael Salmon is such a wonderful chef. We also got aquainted with Mary Jo the innkeeper and Megan one of the staff members who were all just lovely. We stayed in the Provence room and though they are tiny, they are still adorablem just be mindful that if you're sensitive to light in the morning you might want to see what rooms do not have the sun facing the windows :) We had a small bottle of wine and chocolates upon arrival in our room which were also very nice and yummy. There is an outdoor patio area with adorable string lights and lanterns if you'd like to participate in their happy hours in the evenings over an adult beverage making small talk with other guests. Also the 2 fire pits are fun as well! Not to mention that if you forget any last minute housekeeping items and you're in a pinch, there is a Walgreens right next door to buy any last minute things you might need and that helped us a bit! read more

The elephant in the room - the Inn was sold about a month ago. While I'm sure some guests were unhappy about this, the Inn and restaurant haven't changed a bit and are both amazing. We stayed 2 nights (10/21&10/22/2021) in the Paris Room on the 2nd floor. The attention to detail was incredible. The included breakfasts were delicious. We dined in the restaurant on our second night and absolutely loved it. Chef Brian has been with the Inn for 5 years and is still creating masterpieces. Cookies and coffee at 3PM and happy hour at 5PM featuring 1/2 priced cocktails and a free appetizer were great touches. The staff was extremely attentive, friendly and helpful and the general manager, Megan, took care of our every need. We just loved this Inn and will be back again for sure. read more

First let me say I've been coming to the Hartstone for 27 years. I've stayed in every suite they have and have always enjoyed them and the amazing food...until this past weekend. About 1-1.5 years ago the Hartstone was sold. The owners ( one of whom was a Cordon Bleu trained chef) sold it with all the furnishings etc. The impeccably trained staff remained, including the chef who had worked with the owner for years. Apart from not seeing the owners anymore , everything remained the same , and my last visit prior to this one ( in 2022) was great. Not sure what happened since then, but the Hartstone has had a significant decline. It started with booking. I always book a suite and dinner one evening. There is always a confirmation E mail sent to assure that all the details are in place. As my reservation approached, and no E mail had come, I decided to call . It took 5 calls as it kept going to a voicemail box that was full. When I finally did speak with someone, she was rude and seemed annoyed to have to deal with me. When we arrived we were greeted by a man who really did not seem to know what was going on. ( The previous staff all seem to have left) Any question was met with "I'll have to check". Previously the service and staff were knowledgeable and treated each guest like a friend. For some reason the, in room coffee makers have been removed, and when I inquired I was told that, should I want coffee before 7:30 , there was instant available in the lobby!! We booked dinner for Saturday night. First, we were not seated in the dining room but in a side porch that used to be a game room. The waiter was hard to identify as he was wearing torn khakis and an untucked shirt. He did the best he could however. Dinner used to be $55.00 and was 5 courses. Now it's $72.00 and 3 courses . Obviously prices have increased so not an issue, if it had been edible. According to the menu, there was a new " chef" . Our first course was Puree of Cauliflower soup. The first issue.. it was cold. The second, it was advertised as being served with apple, chive and parmesan . Those were on a side plate and no comment was given about whether they should be added to the soup. One bite revealed that they should, but again cold soup and a lack of knowledge on the part of the staff , started the meal off poorly. Next we were given a roll, which we later figured out was a stale King's Hawaiian roll. Let me say, this was the best thing we got to eat. After that , we waited 45 minutes (!!!!!) for our main course, which was allegedly mustard GLAZED brisket with bone marrow and Brussels sprouts. When the entree arrived, I turned my plate at least 4 times in an attempt to identify the " meat". This was served with a 100% uncooked fat cap, was NOT brisket but a poorly cooked corned beef. It was devoid of any glaze, instead served in a thin and watery liquid that tasted slightly mustardy in some areas. There was no bone marrow anywhere on the plate. As far as the brussel spouts I had 3 halves , in addition to about 4 chunks of carrot and some fingerling potato. All the vegetables had been parboiled but then were not finished , so remained uncooked. And both my plate and my husbands were COMPLETELY COLD. I asked the waiter if that was the intent. He offered his apologies and said he'd look into a discount. Then came dessert. I requested this: Peanut butter semifredo with Vanilla Genoise / Strawberry Gelee. It was BEAUTIFUL! And was served with beautiful decorative sugar decorations. Unfortunately, as pretty as it was, it was a disappointment . Nothing had any flavor . I tried it separately, tried it together, had my husband try it both ways . It tasted of nothing. It was cold, and if you tried very hard you could detect a faint peanut butter taste, similar to what you get if you place your hand down on a surface where peanut butter was spilled. My husband had a rum raisin soufflé. He's had other soufflés here over the years and all have been amazing. The staff generally breaks the top and pours the liquid for you. Our waiter did not do that, instructing diners to do it themselves. The only reason my husband ate his , is because it tasted like it was made exclusively from rum. All told , our dinner took 2.5 hours. We ate about 20-30% and it cost us $112.00. (we did receive a small discount). I wish I could say breakfast was better, but I would be lying. Add to all this the fact that the new owners have removed 100% of what made this place wonderful: the attentive staff, the amazing food, the wonderful decor, the attention to comfort and detail. Staff used to walk around and speak to every table inquiring as to their plans and making recommendations. Now they act as though you are a nuisance. My husband and I ate the next day at a local bar. Received great food and service for a fraction of the price. We love Camden and will return but we will have to find another B and B because I won't be returning to the Hartstone. read more

This is a very good restaurant - not only the best restaurant in Camden but a very good restaurant in -any- city. It's obvious that the chef is accomplished and it shows up in the small details. The menu is somewhat limited; main courses are a lobster dish, a steak; a pork chop; a fish fillet. This is a good thing in that in eating there over several days while staying at the Inn as guests, we found the preparation consistent at the level of a good French restaurant. The sauces are very good; they add to the dishes without overpowering them. The flavor combinations of the mains and their accompanying sides are thoughtfully chosen (the steak is accompanied by roasted carrot slices and mushroom ravioli). Wine choices are nice and surprisingly reasonable in price, as are the menu prices overall. No need for a tie or a dress dress, but you won't see anyone in a tee-shirt with a clever message on it either; a nice polo shirt for men and a blouse and skirt for women will make you blend in nicely. read more

We took up a really beautiful dining room with a group of 12 for dinner. The inn is just gorgeous! It's a bit funny that it's so split up from a room perspective for example I can see a bedroom from my seat in the dining room but it's elegant, perfect for a really special occasion. The service was simply great. We were loud but they handled us well. The selection of wine was extensive. All sorts of specialty drinks. Beer menu was good too. Everything from the soup to the dessert was special and delicious. The white chocolate pistachio soufflé is to die for. Don't miss it. Worth every bite! Worth every penny read more

While the location is lovely, the staff are friendly and the food was wonderful we left feeling quite unwell. Our first night my husband and I began to have throat and chest issues as if we were coming down with something. I was up all night coughing. Upon further inspection the next day, my husband found a heavy layer of black mold in the split heat pump/ ac unit. We shut it off and opened the windows. We had paid for an additional night so we stuck it out but even with the AC off we struggled due to the amount of mold. Left earlier then we would have liked to avoid any further illness. If mold sensitive I would not recommend staying here. read more

We came up for 2 days to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was a lovely visit... We stayed in the French time suite which is in the hideaway inn around the corner. It's a very nice room, with a fireplace, and 2 private porches with seating, and a nice large bathroom with Jacuzzi tub. We ate in the restaurant one night, and the chef's tasting menu was fantastic. The portions, while not huge, are perfectly adequate... Brian is an amazing cook, and I've never had a better filet mignon. The breakfast each morning was spectacular, and we are definitely coming back here again on our next visit to Camden. read more

My wife and I do NOT recommend eating here. We went on Wednesday evening, 12/20/23. We had reservations for 5:30. When my wife walked in, all the help were sitting at a table opposite the entrance. When they saw her, they all got up and left. I arrived from parking and still no one had greeted either of us. We had to poke around several rooms to find them, and even when we found a group of them standing around in the back, no one stepped forward. Finally, a hostess said "follow me" and proceeded to walk away further back, so we followed, but she turned up from a different hallway to be where we'd already been standing, so it made us feel foolish. She took us to the front dining room to try to seat us at a table towards the middle of the room. We asked for and we're seated in the front bow window instead. It turns out that we were the only ones there until the middle of our entree, when a table for 6 was seated right next to where we would have been. It was the only larger table so we'd have been right next to them. I asked for a glass of red wine but the waitress delivered a glass of white. It was replaced with the excuse that what I had asked for sounded like something else. It didn't sound like anything else on their wine list. We ordered an appetizer and entrees. The soup was fine but not great. We don't like to rush dinners at all; we like to take our time at dinners out. But we were both surprised by how long it took for the entrees to be served, especially that we were the only guests there. And when they did arrive they were NOT hot. We left without dessert. A few hours later my wife was hit with FOOD POISONING. We suspect her scallops, but we know it was that dinner because we hadn't eaten since brunch that morning. My wife was violently I'll. So we tried to call the restaurant over the next several days but no one ever answered the phone. So we finally left a message about the food poisoning, inviting Hartstone to get in touch with us but no one ever called back. We're giving one star because we can't leave no stars, but the service and the food was worse than awful. And this place is expensive! NOT worth it !!! read more

Sadly this place has gone downhill. My partner and I have been coming here for years and had been looking forward to this visit. We knew the ownership had changed but wanted to come back regardless. Big mistake. Everything that we had once loved is now gone. The staff used to be so friendly and warm. The existing staff are all gone now and we barely got a hello this time. We had an issue with our room and the general manager waved it off as a nuisance. The food is overpriced and very small portions. We felt unheard and unseen. What once was a charming inn is now no better than a Best Western. We are sorry to say we will not be returning here on our next visit to Camden. read more
