Who ever thought it was a good idea to put Sysco pre-grated fake "Parmesan" cheese out of a bag and put it on a taco or on guacamole, really needs to find another profession. They do not belong in a kitchen, especially not one charging these prices. Truly, Parmesan cheese doesn't belong on Mexican food under any circumstances, even if you're trying to do some sort of fusion cuisine and even if it were real Parmesan. I came for a late solo lunch on at Tuesday. They weren't busy at all so I had almost the whole place to myself. The decor and vibe is clean and chic-- very welcoming. I was greeted by my server who was kind and when asking her for recommendations she was very helpful. I got the chips, guacamole & salsa to start-- all fresh but, the salsas didn't have much of any heat and the guacamole had a bit too much cheese on top. For my entree I got the plantain tacos which were fantastic (definitely recommend). Lots of flavor and nice size portion--it also came with a side of rice and black beans. Overall didn't love or hate this place. The food lacked a lot of flavor quite honestly (except for the Plantain Molotes they were really good and the Poached Pear). Based on the price point of the food it should taste much better. I will say the drinks were really good alongside the location is gorgeous/ the inside is very nice and cozy. However the service was the opposite, while the servers were all very nice IT WAS INCREDIBLY SLOW and we went on a night that it was not busy (so I couldn't imagine a weekend). They forgot to refill our waters and bringing everything out or getting a waiter to order additional drinks / food was so hard. Now that it is starting to get fresh outside, we wanted to look for a place with a patio, and we were around this place. It has such a nice patio with great views of the mountains and 9th Street. Food was great and of quality! I am a sucker for plantains so I got the plantain quesadilla. It did not disappoint! Great blend of warm sweet and savory from the plantains and cheese. The cantaloupe and prosciutto was an another sweet and savory mix. Can't stress this enough - the cantaloupe was extremely sweet! Must be in season :) Chips, salsa and guacamole were yummy, but I will say, the chips tasted a tiny tiny bit stale, or maybe the cut of it was just a bit too thick. My favorite part about all of this was our server. Great service provided! We asked for the spiciest sauce they got. Plus the steak and quac were amazing. The carnitas tacos were super good too! Chips & salsa for $18... they were good, but that's steep! Also Dos XX beer was $9.5 a bottle with no lime. Dos XX is like $14 for a 12 pack and this place is charging nearly $10 a bottle. Insanity! It was busy but not crazy busy, so perhaps they were understaffed or it really was just sub par service. Wanted to try something new and happened to be downtown SLC. Lola was at the top of my list and they did not disappoint. First the host/server was so friendly and on top of everything. We ordered the queso fundido at a fellow yelpers suggestion and it was really good 5/5. But our server thought it was taking too long to come out so he gave us some chips and salsa to munch on. I didn't even notice it was taking too long, but made us feel valued as a customer. And the red salsa was really good, nice hot kick to it and the green salsa was kind of minty but very yummy and mild. 5/5 I ordered the carne asada open face burrito butcher's cut steak, with potato chips, onions & avocado on the top of a flour tortilla. $21.00. So loaded with excellent steak I had to eat it down a bit before I could roll it in the burrito. Placed on onions and potato chips. Weird right? But tasted great and added a little crunch. The chips were really salty though, too salty, but still really good in the burrito. I just got a mouthful of just chips and it about dehydrated me on the spot. I'd order this again in a heartbeat. 5/5 My wife ordered the tinga empanada oven roasted chicken empanada with cabbage & mole. *tinga tacos $16 $18.00. Honestly was quite disappointed about our whole experience. It was our first time at Lola, and it will be a while before I want to try it again. When seated the service was slow and we kind of felt like an inconvenience to even be there. Price wise, the value is not there for what you get. We had carne asada tacos, which was $18 for two tacos and a couple pickled veggies, and a carne asada quesadilla for $22, which was steak, cheese on a tortilla with a small dollop of guacamole. The steak was cooked perfectly, but honestly that was the only thing going for it. There was no real flavor other than some salt on the meat. Please season your food or at least provide some kind of salsa or hot sauce to go with it. I was also missing the cilantro on the quesadilla, asked for it, and never got it. The biggest pro of Lola were their drinks (we had a margarita and mexi cali which were very tasty) and the ambience. Sitting on the patio was fabulous and 9th and 9th in great weather can't be beat. I want to try this place again in hopes that if we order something different the experience would be better. read more

We came here for lunch on a Monday afternoon and we were one of a handful of tables. We sat outside on their gorgeous patio space. They have a very limited menu, which made choosing the food we wanted really simple. They don't have a wide variety of vegetarian options, however. Queso Fundido: This was so delicious. It came with fresh tortilla triangles with salt and oil. It was SO good. Watermelon Salad: This was the star of the show. The presentation of this salad was amazing, and it was also so delicious and perfect for a hot summer day on their patio. It came with jicama, feta, oranges I think? or grapefruit?, and the most delicious salty + sweet combination of a dressing. The watermelon was so juicy and delicious, I will be dreaming about this salad for the rest of my life. Yam: This was the only vegetarian entree on the menu, and it was good, but it wasn't my favorite thing we had. I probably wouldn't order it again. It was a yam with a crema and some seasonings on top. I would love to see some vegetarian options of their tacos and other items on the menu. Paloma: I didn't realize this, but they use mezcal in their palomas, and I didn't love the smokey flavor of it. However, if you like mezcal, you would love this! I still drank it all, it was delicious and refreshing. Due to the limited vegetarian options here, I would probably only come back for appetizers and drinks, rather than full meal, but I love their patio, they're in a great location, and I really enjoyed the food we had. read more

We grabbed dinner here before going to a concert. We had to call for reservations which were easy to get for a Saturday night. We were seated outside but the patio is open depending on weather. The inside is decorated really cute and has an open vibe. The food was so good. The watermelon salad was a great shareable dish that was refreshing. The empanada was so good with the pickled onions and sauce. The beef tacos were very flavorful but had a little more fat on them than I liked. This did feel like it was a never restaurant, service was good but could be better. Such a cute spot for dinner. Got there early at 5:30 so really didn't need a reservation but by 7:00pm, the restaurant was full. We started with the Watermelon Salad - the watermelon was so fresh and the dressing added the perfect flavor - made it feel like summer on this cold winter day. Loved the chips and guacamole - the chips were very fresh and crisp. Finished with the chicken tacos which came with two and plenty of chicken so glad we split. I thought this was OK. The ambiance was ok but food did not meet my expectations. We ordered chips and salsa, which was very over priced ($18!!). The table ordered carnitas tacos and shrimp tacos, both were eh. The carnitas seemed to have lacked a step in the process of cooking (maybe searing the meat before slow cooking?) and the shrimp seemed to be boiled - the artichoke and Parmesan were also an interesting combo for the shrimp taco. I easily found parking in the neighborhood nearby. The place was empty at 12:30 on a Wednesday. The guy who helped us was warm and inviting. The inside is pretty and clean. We started with queso fundido and it was so tasty. I liked that the corn tortilla quarters (for dipping) were warmed and salted. They use two fancy Weber cheeses and plantains. My friend took all the jalapeños and luckily the rest of the cheese was not spicy. He got the quesadilla and loved it. It looked really good. I got the shrimp tacos and they were too mayonnaise-y. I had Mayo and I think butter(?) dripping down my arm the whole time. Yikes. The shrimp and cheese were good though. I feel scammed. Save your money and go elsewhere. See that picture of the plate with 1/4 of a quesadilla and some sliced avocado? $20 with tax and tip. FOR ONE QUARTER OF A QUESADILLA...and this is in Utah! Tacos here are $8-9 each, and they don't even double the corn tortilla like most places do. That's a red flag to me. You can get more flavorful tacos for half that price all over the valley- both taco cart and restaurant. These prices are completely unjustified. My steak salad barely had any toppings, let alone any steak. At this point I was already annoyed, but it felt like they were trying to hide how little steak there was by placing it underneath the big pile of greens. The flavor of the salad itself was also off- for me, it was too much of a pickled flavor and little beyond that. Basically, you get a few steak strips, greens, thin slices of asparagus, some sort of mustard dressing, and overpowering salt flakes for $20+. I did see a recent Yelp review complaining about the guacamole which made me want to order it just to see how bad it really was, but at $16 for some chips and guacamole (really just $16 for guacamole because chips should be a complimentary appetizer at a joint like this), I couldn't justify satisfying my curiosity to that extent. It's a shame because 9th and 9th is a fun area and the vibes are awesome, but I recommend saving your money and supporting other businesses that are more deserving. While this may read as a one star review, I've chosen two stars because the ambiance is nice and the service was very kind and accommodating- our water glasses were never left empty. Came here for a birthday dinner as a party of 8. To begin, we were sat at a table literally two feet away from the entrance door, which was also two feet away from a very small seat where people can wait and from the host stand. Of course, there are also others waiting by the door. It felt like they tried to fit a table in a space that should've been a larger front/waiting area and it just felt awkward. Then during our dinner, we had a few different waiters help us throughout the night. All were great except for one who would make racial remarks such as "where are you ORIGINALLY from" and said "ching chong" more than once. He was helpful and friendly as a server and these remarks did not come out with a condescending tone per se, so I'm not sure if it's just his sense of humor or what (me giving him the benefit of the doubt). Regardless, I would expect more professional behavior and it definitely left a sour taste in the group's mouth. Now, on to the actual food. It was very mediocre and definitely not worth the price. Our group all ordered a variety of things and none were mind blowing. Imagine 2 tacos, no sides or anything else, for $20. Mid-sized quesadilla, also $20. I would rather get double the food for half the price at a more run down joint that has a more authentic taste. Then when the bill came (which also actually took a while), someone in our group got charged an extra $5 for cheese they didn't ask for, nor was it added anywhere to the dish. For larger groups, they also charge an automatic 25% gratuity. Way higher than the average 18-20% group gratuity! Being forced to pay that high of a tip with racial comments thrown at us does not sit right. On top of the smaller portions of mediocre food with higher than worth prices, I just can't help but to feel robbed. On the flip side, I did love their Agua Fresca, but again, not worth the price. The other waiters were also very nice. We brought a cake for the birthday and the waiters brought us plates and utensils. Unfortunately, this positive portion does not outweigh the negative. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. I don't typically leave reviews but this experience was so negative that I had to say something.
