We were pretty unhappy with the service. Although the food was good, the service was poor. The owner's mother (I think) bumped our reservation for some random family that came just minutes before being seated. I think they were probably regulars. However, that is unethical and rude. Came here for a splurge vacation dinner. They had two specials for the evening: a tuna dish with lobster risotto and a cobia dish with pasta and my mushroom sauce. This food was amazing. PERFECTLY cooked which I think is rare for restaurants to do well. (Pun intended: I like my tuna rare). If this restaurant wasn't so nice, I'd have licked the extra mushroom sauce off the cobia plate. The service was also very good. We actually left our credit card there and they called us let us know to come back and get it as they had my number from making the reservation. I thought that was really nice and helpful! It seemed that the place filled up quickly after we got there so call ahead. This is a great place for a fancy dinner then a nice walk along the water. Nice place. The only thing I wish they had but didn't is a cocktail menu, however the wine list looked extensive but I don't really drink wine so I can't comment. My wife and I were looking for a good meal and stumbled on a review here on the Blue Moon Bistro so we decided to try it. We were very glad we did! We were greeted at the door and felt welcome. The global atmosphere of the restaurant was subtly upscale Bohemian and very comfortable surroundings. There were many simple things that created a very pleasant atmosphere. It was a shame it was not chilly, as I would have liked to see if the beautiful fireplace warmed the venue with crackling logs. The waitress arrived quickly bringing some water and asking for our drink order, then explaining the specials of the evening knowledgeably. My wife at the shrimp and grits for an appetizer. The presentation and taste were wonderful. The blend of the seasoned shrimp, portebello mushroom and grits was balanced and pleasing to the palate. My wife had ordered the veal with fresh carrots and mashed potatoes. It was wonderful. My main course came with a perfectly constructed risotto, and the tuna was cooked to perfection. For dessert we chose the belgian dark chocolate crème brûlée to share and politely battled for the last taste in the dish. We will definitely return to sample another choice from the menu. This place is such a gem in Beaufort and makes going to the beach so enjoyable. Highly recommend the chicken, lasagna, and pretty much any fish EVER on the menu. Fantastic desserts as well, which are demurely sized - not tiny but not big, either, just the right thing to top your meal off with. Reservations are recommended definitely on the weekend. My lovely wife and I thought the food was excellent, especially the Eggplant Lasagna and the Grouper. We shared the tomato, smoked mozzarella, basil, balsamic salad and for dessert the key-lime cheesecake was incredible. This was my first visit, but the food made it a memorable one. There were four people in our party on a Saturday night. The food was delicious - must sent our kudos to the Chef for creativity and a steady hand. We had wonderful appetizers; I had the deep fried oysters with a dipping sauce, and they were cooked to perfection. Our cocktails were professionally mixed, much to our satisfaction. Dinner ranged from eggplant lasagna, shrimp carbanara, to a fresh fish dish. All were supurb. The server was friendly, helpful, and always nearby, making this a great dinner. The only reason it does not rate five stars was the ambient noise - simply too loud. That said, this place deserves your visit and you won't be disappointed. read more

This is probably the best restaurant in Beaufort right now, and it has been for several years. Service and cooking are at a uniformly high level. The inside is quite pleasant, too, though like most restaurants, it can get noisy on busy nights. The only drawback is a relatively small menu, but it always include the major groups (LOCAL seafood, good steaks, vegetarian dishes, and poultry). I have never had anything less than very good here, and almost everything is excellent. The wine list is good, too, and they know what they are selling. I highly recommend the Blue Moon Bistro for an excellent meal in very pleasant surroundings. read more

This place was phenomenal. It was a quaint little place with the lights turned down low, candles and fresh flowers on the tables, and nice music in the background. The portions are not huge, they are exactly right and cooked to perfection. My husband got one of the specials - grouper over cheese ravioli with red sauce and green beans. Not things I would've ever thought to pair together but it was beautifully plated and very tasty. I got the salmon with asparagus and mushrooms over lobster ravioli with cream sauce. It was amazing. I would definitely go back and have it again. We had the chocolate creme brûlée with chocolate walnut brownies on the side for dessert and it was sooo good. We were on our way to SC and had hoped to stay in Beaufort for the night...too late everything full. So we opted for dinner and landed at the Blue Moon on a Friday night, sort of scruffy and road weary, we must have been a sight. We had no reservations and they had no tables, so just as we turned to leave I asked about what time they would have availability and the hostess said around 9 (three hour wait), but we could sit in the bar! How lovely, the bartender was just delightful and suggested the grouper with ravioli and asparagus. We shared the dish and it was de-lish. Don't miss this sweet little bistro. read more

The Blue Moon is located next door to the Grocery in another historic downtown Beaufort home. The lighting and decorations are well done and you will have an elegant evening with great local seafood, all Carteret Catch. Nothing bad to say here - everything is done well. After doing the research and driving over an hour to get there, the restaurant was closed! It stated on the website and on the door itself that it was open on a Tuesday at 5pm. We arrived yesterday, Tuesday, April 17th, 2018 at 5 pm and it was closed. There was not explanation anywhere--not on the door, not by phone. Horribly disappointing and and frustrating! We brought a group of 22! Only chef owned and managed restaurant in area. Highlights for appetizers and dinner included scallops, the best I and others have ever had and the ribeye. It was outstanding. The tuna and the flounder was just ok which is why I rated it only 4 stars. If I could go 4.5 I would've. Service was outstanding!!! Great service and decent atmosphere. It definitely fits the charming historic Beaufort feel. Food was okay, but not memorable. Appetizers likely scored higher than the main course. The Duck salad was quite good as was the endive and spinach salad. The fried oyster martini is a great twist on the old fried oyster, but likely a safer bet when oysters are in season. Beyond delicious, well spiced and cooked perfectly to order, quick and knowledgeable service. We drove 40 minutes from Emerald Isle, and it was well worth the drive. My rare yellow fin tuna was firm but still melted in my mouth, and the sauce and veggies complemented it perfectly. The crabcakes were fall-apart-in-your-mouth divine with an excellently textured, zesty cocktail sauce. The desserts, caramel-chocolate cake and the flour-free chocolate cake with sorbet, were just the right amount of sweet, the homemade ice cream rich and creamy. Cannot recommend enough!! read more

Absolutely love this place Had the grilled local Tuna rare. Fish was preparation was perfect. Accompanied with a veggie risotto which was very good as well. When heading to NC coast we have a designated place to stay in Salter Path and are fans of City Kitchen, Floyd s, in Morehead and Tratorria, on the edge of the White Oak River bridge in Swansboro. July 1st I called into make a reservation for Blue Moon Bistro after checking their web site and was pleasantly surprised to find they were open that Monday night. (web site was not updated for summer hours). We had great service with Ben as our wait server. We loved the soft shell with slaw appetizer ( very light crust ) and the beet salad. I love beets so any chance I get for these I usually try them. My significant other not crazy about them. But we were knocked out by the Grouper and Ravioli which we shared (with a sharing fee) but the portions were extremely generous. Spanish Syrah Merlot blend outstanding. Followed up with deserts which were delicious. They were not on the menu, I believe mine was Cannoli fingers? She had something chocolatey and off the menu Very Good! She claims hers way better sorry not much help here. Real pretty dining room with great prints on walls and adequate bar area for seating while drinking or eating. Not a young hipster crowd but they are missing out here! Gin and Tonics should always be served with a lime! Beaufort Waterfront and shops great for post dinner walk and look around. My mom and I went in at 7:00 for a drink at the bar, was asked if we would be dining but we weren't sure yet and we were told that was fine. However, 20 minutes later we asked if we could be seated at a table we were told that all of the tables were reserved. There were 12 EMPTY tables! There were two of us. And the so-called reserved tables were for 8:00. It was 7:20. Wow. Poor business tactics. We were baffled. Needless to say we left and went to the Cedar Inn down the road where the customer service was MUCH better. I'd give them zero stars if I could. read more

What an adorable place! Even on such a rainy/snowy day, the restaurant was warm, inviting, and the staff made you feel right at home. Every thing I had was wonderful. I started with the endive salad. I would have like to seen more endive-I actually love that bitter green, but the light vinaigrette was a perfect balance of sweet and tart and the the endive provided a nice crunch to the salad. My friends got the oysters and they were lovely-nice texture and incredibly fresh and the cocktail sauce had a nice kick. Overall, great start to the meal. For my entree....wait for it-Salmon with lobster ravioli. This is my total Rachael Ray moment...yummo! I could not decide which one I liked better, but either would have made fantastic dishes by themselves so, it was a bonus that these were also a match made in heaven. The salmon was so fresh, perfectly cooked, and I enjoyed the light mushroom sauce that accompanied the dish. The raviolis were magnificient. I really hate going to a restaurant and ordering lobster raviolis, but you can't taste the lobster. They should be mentioned as cheese raviolis with a hint of lobster. However, Blue Moon's raviolis were molto bene. I will definitely return. It was a fantastic experience and wonderful food. read more

We were staying across the street for a weekend and made a reservation for dinner here. The service was great (our waitress was very friendly) and the ambiance/decor was very nice and cozy. The food was of good portion sizes--enough for us to have our own dessert afterwards and still not feel stuffed. And while the food was good, it was not quite up to par for the price. read more

Seemed like a great place as it was next to where we were staying (The Pecan Tree). It's a posh-type place where rich men (40s-60s) wear pink shirts with light blue pants and drink high dollar gin and tonics. I had the Prime cut of Ribeye that was great! A bit undercooked for a medium well steak, so i sent it back and it came back fine. Wife had the Caesar salad that was average. We went on a Saturday night and couldn't get a table till 8:45pm. I think this place is more hype than anything. It's pretty loud so don't expect to be able to carry on a conversation with your dinner partner. You'll be yelling back and forth. Maybe if you make a reservation and go early people won't be as loud (gin and tonics won't have had time to take affect). Our 50-something waitress was a bit aloof too. Not rude; just seemed like she wanted to be at the country club playing bridge. If you don't visit this place you are not missing out on anything special. read more

Had a wonderful late night dinner at Blue Moon. My wife and I had late reservations (9:00PM) and were greeted with great hospitality and warming ambience. The restaurant is tucked away in a historic site, the Dale House. We started with a bottle of Chardonnay, which at between $30 - $35 a bottle was well priced. As we like to sample, we picked 5 small plates, all between $6 - $12 a piece. We enjoyed 2 specials. One was a local German Johnson tomato and Mozzarella Caprese salad, using local balsamic. This was stacked and each layer was perfectly seasoned. The other was a curry powder flash fried oyster martini with sweet Thai chili dipping side. Both delicious. We then tried three other small plates. Lamb chops over shitaki mushrooms with a mozzarella and ricotta ravioli, to die for. We next had their standard cheese plate which included a mango chutney. This was good, but we found the cheeses slim cut and what you would find in most groceries. Lastly, we enjoyed seared sea scallops au poire, which was over penne pasta, Mozzarella cheese and a brown pepper sauce, delicious. All in all a wonderful dinner. The waitress was a charming woman from Beaufort about to go on her honeymoon to the Dominican Republic. She made our dinner as her attitude was so nice and you could tell she really supported the food and believed in the quality. I can't say enough about the experience.
